Chapter 69: Little Sister
“Gu Wanrong!” A voice, like thunder, exploded in Gu Wanrong’s ears. Gu Wanrong trembled involuntarily and abruptly opened her eyes.
The sight before her left Gu Wanrong disoriented—the bright computer screen displayed a mass of unfamiliar files and documents. She instinctively shook her head.
Something felt wrong. Why did she feel so light?
“You haven’t finished organizing the documents the boss wants, be careful you get scolded!” It was the same voice again, but the person had moved to the other side of “Gu Wanrong,” sitting down as they spoke.
Gu Wanrong glanced down at the person sitting in the chair, her heart trembling with confusion: they looked almost exactly like her before her rebirth!
Gu Wanrong slowly turned her head, carefully scanning her surroundings. She saw unfamiliar faces and an entirely unfamiliar setting.
Where was this place? Why was she here? Why was she also called “Gu Wanrong”? Countless questions flooded Gu Wanrong’s mind, making her feel dizzy.
“Little Ye, don’t worry, I’ll go submit them now.” The “Gu Wanrong” at the computer said softly, then carefully picked up the stack of printed and organized documents, slowly stood up, and left.
“What’s going on?”
Gu Wanrong found that her body was completely out of her control, as if pulled by an invisible force, involuntarily following “Gu Wanrong.”
As they passed a transparent glass door, Gu Wanrong was shocked to see that her reflection wasn’t visible on the glass; nor was she reflected in a mirror they passed.
Overwhelmed with terror, Gu Wanrong trembled, raising her hands to touch her surroundings, but she was horrified to realize that her arms were as light and ethereal as mist, able to easily pass through walls and other objects.
“I’ve become a ghost!” Gu Wanrong exclaimed, but her shout didn’t attract any attention or response.
As time ticked by, Gu Wanrong, forced to follow “Gu Wanrong” and unable to stray more than three meters away, gradually understood the strange situation.
This “Gu Wanrong” was none other than the “Gu Wanrong” from the parallel world she had traveled from, a “Gu Wanrong” whose soul had swapped with hers. From “Gu Wanrong”‘s words and actions, she, like Gu Wanrong, possessed all of the other’s memories from their respective worlds.
Late at night, “Gu Wanrong” lay down in a room that was intimately familiar to Gu Wanrong from her memories and gradually fell asleep.
A dazzling white light suddenly flashed before Gu Wanrong’s eyes. She instinctively closed her eyes tightly, and when she opened them again, she was surprised to find herself in a strange, white space.
As far as she could see, a figure stood opposite her—it was the “Gu Wanrong” she had followed for the entire day.
Their eyes met, both filled with the same confusion and bewilderment.
“It’s you!”
Both exclaimed simultaneously, as if telepathically understanding each other’s identity.
Gu Wanrong felt deep guilt for having taken over “Gu Wanrong”‘s body, leaving “Gu Wanrong” to deal with the failures of her past life.
Recognizing each other, Gu Wanrong blurted out without hesitation, “Do you resent me? I’m so sorry.”
The “Gu Wanrong” opposite her saw the self-blame and unease in Gu Wanrong’s heart and smiled, saying firmly, “I’m grateful to you, Sister.”
These words were like a gentle spring flowing into Gu Wanrong’s heart, easing some of her guilt, and then countless questions arose.
Gu Wanrong didn’t understand why she said thank you.
In her past life, the oppressive family atmosphere, the extreme lack of love that led to an inferiority complex and introverted personality, and the survival pressures after graduation had all been shackles that bound and tormented her.
The “Gu Wanrong” opposite her walked lightly towards her, affectionately and naturally linking arms with Gu Wanrong, conveying an indescribable fondness.
“In the past, everyone said I was a disaster, a bad omen for my family. But here, I’ve seen Grandpa and Grandma again, and I’m happy.”
“Gu Wanrong” said softly, her tone full of emotion and contentment.
But life wasn’t just about the care and love of her grandparents; there was also her biological father’s coldness and indifference. She had been an outsider, silently watching her father, stepmother, and younger sister live a happy life, while she couldn’t integrate herself into it.
Gu Wanrong didn’t understand. Could such a life really make someone happy?
She thought this and asked the question.
“To be honest, in my world, there wasn’t much affection between my parents and me, was there? From the time I could remember, only Grandpa and Grandma were by my side. In my heart, my family was only them, and of course, you, my sister.”
Having said that, “Gu Wanrong” leaned closer, gently resting her chin on Gu Wanrong’s shoulder, as if seeking more warmth.
Gu Wanrong couldn’t help but recall “Gu Wanrong”‘s past eighteen years.
“Gu Wanrong”‘s only memory of her mother was from what people said—that she had died in childbirth because of her; her father had never returned home for many years and had never shown her any concern or affection; “Gu Wanrong”‘s only memory of him was the sad funeral.
It made sense that “Gu Wanrong” felt no affection for them.
Gu Wanrong clearly felt the closeness “Gu Wanrong” was conveying. She carefully examined “Gu Wanrong,” surprised to find that the “Gu Wanrong” before her was much more lively and outgoing than the introverted and sensitive girl she remembered.
A complex emotion welled up in her heart. “Gu Wanrong” was getting better and better. Gu Wanrong unconsciously gently stroked her hair, murmuring, “Sister?”
“That’s right! Before we switched bodies, you were 22, and I was 18. We’re both from the same father and mother, so aren’t you my sister?”
“Gu Wanrong” said confidently, gently rubbing her head against Gu Wanrong’s hand.
There was another reason:
Since meeting Gu Wanrong, every apology and every caring question she had spoken, she had keenly felt Gu Wanrong’s care for her. Besides her grandparents, she now had another relative who truly cared for her – Gu Wanrong, so “Gu Wanrong” sincerely wanted to call her sister.
Seeing “Gu Wanrong”‘s affectionate and natural demeanor, Gu Wanrong readily accepted being called sister.
In this boundless white space, only the two of them existed.
Gu Wanrong wanted to learn from “Gu Wanrong” about her daily life after the rebirth, how she was doing, even though she had been with her as a soul for a whole day, she still felt she knew very little.
