Chapter 10: Be Obedient, I’ll Let You Go in Two Days
Wen Yuhuai stood on the sofa and wrote the number ’11’ with a crayon on the only remaining white wall. His eleventh day locked up.
Not necessarily the eleventh day, just the eleventh day counted since he woke up.
After writing, he tossed the crayon aside, went to the bathroom expressionlessly with bare feet, took off his bathrobe, and started showering again.
Actually, he had already showered once when he woke up in the morning, but he felt like he wasn’t clean. Every part of his body felt incredibly uncomfortable.
Hot water poured down from above, and steam quickly filled the air. Wen Yuhuai stood under the showerhead, letting the warm water rinse his body over and over.
He looked down at the glaring red marks on his body and rubbed them vigorously without blinking, using so much force it seemed he wanted to rub that flesh raw.
Obviously, the marks wouldn’t rub off; instead, they became more obvious. Wen Yuhuai stared quietly at the skin, which was red enough to bleed, for a few seconds. He cursed lowly and finally gave up.
Anyway, what should be seen and what shouldn’t be seen had all been seen. He didn’t cover up anymore. Throwing on a bathrobe casually, he walked out. Too lazy to dry his hair, he sat down heavily on the sofa.
Suddenly, he really wanted to smoke a cigarette.
Wen Yuhuai wasn’t addicted to smoking and rarely smoked, but right now he really wanted one. It felt as if one cigarette would solve all his troubles.
But the man locking him up wouldn’t agree. The reason was simple and direct: smoking involves fire.
The more he thought, the more irritable he became. He kicked the coffee table hard. The table didn’t move; his foot hurt.
Damn it, even more annoying.
He looked around, wanting to find something to vent on, but saw nothing. There was nothing in the room that could become a weapon. The furniture was welded to the floor. Even the water cup was plastic; it wouldn’t break no matter how hard he threw it.
Circling the room like a trapped beast twice more, his gaze landed on the surveillance camera in the corner of the ceiling. His eyes gradually went cold.
He bent down, picked up the cup on the table, estimated the angle, and smashed it hard against it.
The angle was slightly off. The camera was safe and sound. The cup hit the ceiling and fell to the ground with a bang, intact.
Wen Yuhuai bent down to pick it up. As if finding some joy, he continued to smash. If he missed once, he picked it up and smashed it a few more times.
After a few tries, he hit the camera squarely. With a crack, it split open.
He still wasn’t satisfied. Holding the cracked cup, he searched everywhere for a new target. He actually found one, right in the gap between the light and the ceiling.
Wen Yuhuai stared at that miniature camera for a while but finally gave up. His aim really wasn’t good. What if he didn’t hit the camera and broke the light instead?
He didn’t want to live in total darkness from now on.
The man had just come last night, so Wen Yuhuai thought he wouldn’t come today. But after the robot delivered dinner, the lights in the room were extinguished abruptly.
The food on the table sat untouched, along with lunch. None of it had been opened.
It wasn’t that he wanted to go on a hunger strike; he truly didn’t want to eat. His stomach seemed to have become a cold container, feeling neither hunger nor fullness.
Wen Yuhuai curled up on the sofa, thinking in self-abandonment: Is he here to settle the score because I broke the camera?
Whatever. Do whatever you want. I’ll play along. At worst, the fish dies and the net breaks. He didn’t want to live like a dog locked up like this anymore.
Click, click, click.
Footsteps soon sounded in his ears. The man seemed to have night vision. Even though it was pitch black, he could always accurately find his location. This time was no exception.
A gaze with a strong presence slowly landed on him. The man was standing right in front of him.
“What’s wrong? Why so unhappy today? Smashing the monitor… do you want to go out?”
Wen Yuhuai was too lazy to even lift his eyelids. He remained curled up on the sofa with his legs bent.
The man continued asking on his own, “Didn’t eat either. Not to your liking?”
Wen Yuhuai remained silent, seemingly lacking even the strength to speak.
The man leaned in close, sighing lightly, seeming to have no way to deal with him. “What to do if Baby doesn’t eat? If you starve, my heart will ache.”
Wen Yuhuai simply closed his eyes, pretending to sleep.
But suddenly, he heard the man speak in that helpless tone, “How about this? You keep me company for two more days. Make me happy. Two days later, I’ll let you go, okay?”
Wen Yuhuai snapped his eyes open. It was still pitch black in front of him, but he couldn’t care less about anything else. “You… what did you say? Let me go in two days?”
The man rubbed the back of his hand against Wen Yuhuai’s cheek, his tone gentle and bewitching. “Of course. I’m not a pervert; how could I keep you locked up forever?”
Wen Yuhuai was no longer lifeless. His eyes shone with astonishing brightness in the dark. “Really two days later? You aren’t lying to me?”
The man stroked his hair again. “Why would I lie to you? What good does lying to you do me? Of course, I have conditions too.”
Wen Yuhuai grabbed the man’s arm tightly with both hands, like grasping a life-saving straw. “Speak. What conditions?”
The man laughed low. “Didn’t I just say? As long as Baby is obedient these two days and makes me happy… if I’m in a good mood, maybe I’ll set Baby free.”
Wen Yuhuai wasn’t sure if he was being coaxed, but he could only choose to believe.
“It’s a deal. You aren’t allowed to lie to me. If you dare lie to me, I’ll—”
The man took over the conversation smoothly. “You’ll what?”
Wen Yuhuai couldn’t say it. He lowered his head dejectedly. Trapped in this hellhole, he couldn’t do anything.
Rustling sounds rang in his ears. The man seemed to have taken off his jacket. Then, a piece of fabric was tied over his eyes again. It should be the man’s tie again.
“I won’t tie your hands today. Don’t touch your eyes. Eat first. After you eat, I’ll untie it for you.”
Wen Yuhuai didn’t know if he could see it, but he nodded obediently.
The man had already said he would free him in two days. There was no need to take the risk. What if he was caught peeking and the man decided not to let him out?
A hazy light soon replaced the pitch darkness in front of him, followed by the sound of the thermal box being opened.
“Be good. Open your mouth.”
Wen Yuhuai opened his mouth and accepted the man’s feeding.
The man was very satisfied with his obedience. He freed a hand to pat his head, like a reward.
Wen Yuhuai frowned deeply. “I’m eating. Why touch my head? It’s dirty. I’m not eating anymore.”
The man adopted an indulgent posture. “Okay, okay, okay. My fault. I’ll go wash my hands right now.”
Footsteps sounded in his ears. Wen Yuhuai’s eyes moved slightly behind the blindfold. His fingers curled with restraint, but he couldn’t control the urge to raise his hand and take off the tie.
Soon, the sound of rushing water from the faucet rang in his ears. The man was washing his hands.
Wen Yuhuai’s hand trembled, raising uncontrollably. His fingertips had already touched the fabric over his eyes when the sound of water stopped abruptly.
