Chapter 61: Voluntarily Letting Him Go
When Wen Yuhuai woke up again, the sky was already bright.
His hand reflexively searched the nightstand, wanting to find his watch to check the time. He didn’t find the watch, but instead, he felt a phone.
A phone!
Wen Yuhuaiâs spirits were immediately roused. He scrambled up from the bed and picked up the phone on the nightstand as if it were a precious treasure.
Gu Yanxiu had actually sent a phone over.
He pressed the screen and found that Gu Yanxiu hadn’t set a password. Sliding in led straight to the WeChat interface, where there was a message left for him by Gu Yanxiu.
[If you’re awake, remember to get your breakfast from the door. I had someone buy it and deliver it to the entrance.]
Wen Yuhuai exited the chat interface, only then realizing this was a brand new WeChat account with only Gu Yanxiu as a friend.
Seeing this message, he indeed felt a bit hungry. He threw back the covers and got out of bed to get breakfast, but just as he stood up, he couldn’t help but frown.
For some reason, both of his legs had become sore and weak, and there was also a bit of… swelling.
It felt like he had been exercising all night.
This feeling was somewhat familiar. He had felt this way before when he was locked up in the mountainside villa. Wen Yuhuai cautiously lifted his pajamas and took a look. There was nothing unusual; it was still the marks left by Fu Xingjian before, though the color seemed to have darkened slightly.
This was also normal. Usually, it takes another two days for the marks to gradually fade.
He went to the door and twisted the handle; the door was still double-locked from the inside.
Wen Yuhuai breathed a sigh of relief, thinking to himself that his nerves must be too frayed, causing him to have delusions.
He walked slowly to the entryway. First, he looked cautiously through the peephole to ensure it was safe. Only then did he finally open the door and bring in the breakfast placed on the table outside.
To his surprise, the breakfast was still hot, as if it had just been placed there.
Wen Yuhuai didn’t think much of it, assuming the breakfast had just arrived. He finished his meal in a few bites, then stared at the phone’s dialing page in a daze, his brow furrowed.
He was thinking about how to tell his family.
Should he tell the truth, or continue to keep them in the dark?
If he told the truth, based on his understanding of the Wen parents, they would definitely not be able to stomach this insult. They would want to seek justice for him, and might even choose to go head-to-head with the Fu family.
But they couldn’t afford to clash! Fu Xingjianâs title as the “Beijing Crown Prince” wasn’t for show. The Wen family was still not quite enough in front of the Fu family. If they really went head-to-head, his own family would be the ones suffering.
Besides, being imprisoned by a man and having… those things done to him… it was really hard to speak about. It felt like a child running to complain.
But if he continued to hide it, where would he go in the future? Did he have to have a home he couldn’t return to and wander the ends of the earth?
The more he thought about it, the more dejected he felt. Wen Yuhuai hesitated for a long time to make the call.
After staring at the dial pad for a while longer, Wen Yuhuai pursed his lips and entered Jiang Jingâs phone number. After another long period of hesitation, he finally dialed.
No matter what, he should call to report that he was safe, since he had been out of contact for so long again.
“Beepâbeepâ”
The busy signal rang twice, and someone soon picked up the call. “Who is this?”
Wen Yuhuai took a deep breath and spoke in a normal tone. “Mom, it’s me.”
The other end was silent for a few seconds. Jiang Jing said with some surprise, “Xiao Huai? Why did you change your phone number?”
Wen Yuhuai found a random excuse to brush it off, then asked, “Has everything been going smoothly for you all in Shencheng these past few days?”
Jiang Jing: “Smoothly. But as for you, Xingjian said you went out with the company’s core members for advanced training, and that you might be out of contact during that period, so he told us not to worry if we couldn’t reach you. What, are you back from training now?”
Wen Yuhuai pulled Fu Xingjian out in his mind to whip his corpse once more, but he still followed Jiang Jingâs lead. “Just got back. Calling to let you know Iâm safe.”
The two chatted for a few more sentences before hanging up. Wen Yuhuai stared blankly at the phone and continued to be in a daze.
What exactly should he do next?
Just muddle through his days like this?
Impossible. He absolutely did not want to live such a life.
A gleam gradually appeared in Wen Yuhuaiâs confused eyes. Just as Gu Yanxiu had said, after Fu Xingjian lowered his guard, he would immediately leave the capital. He would find a random place to stay for a while, wait until Fu Xingjianâs interest in him wore off, and then come backâor simply not come back at all.
He didn’t believe the man would be so constant in his feelings that he would hold onto him for a lifetime.
If he couldn’t afford to provoke him, he could at least hide.
Wen Yuhuai had just planned out his short-term goals when the phone rang. He picked it up and looked; as expected, it was Gu Yanxiu.
“A-Yu, have you eaten?”
Wen Yuhuai: “Just finished.”
Gu Yanxiuâs voice sounded a bit tired, as if he were entangled by some troublesome matter. “That’s good. You ate breakfast late, so Iâll have someone deliver lunch to you around one o’clock. Someone will knock on the door then; remember to go and get it.”
Wen Yuhuai gave a soft en.
Gu Yanxiuâs tone was gentle. “Then Iâll hang up for now. Remember to tell me if anything happens.”
Wen Yuhuai struggled internally for a while, but finally couldn’t resist asking, “Have you run into some difficulties?”
Gu Yanxiu chuckled softly. “How could that be? It’s just that Fu Xingjian is acting like a mad dog right now, biting people indiscriminately. I just got caught in the crossfire a bit. But it’s all minor issues; you don’t need to worry.”
Wen Yuhuaiâs frown deepened. “Did he go to find you?”
Gu Yanxiu: “No.”
He wasn’t lying about this. Although Fu Xingjian was chasing him like a mad dog, he hadn’t personally come to find him. He had only been having people investigate in secret.
Fortunately, he had prepared several cars at the same time that day and specially selected someone whose build and silhouette were similar to Wen Yuhuaiâs to be sent to the station. Right now, Fu Xingjianâs main focus was no longer on the capital.
Wen Yuhuai wanted to say something more, but a knocking sound came from Gu Yanxiuâs side. It seemed an assistant was looking for him.
“You go ahead and get busy. Iâll call you if anything happens.”
Gu Yanxiu responded smoothly and waited quietly for the other end to hang up.
Wen Yuhuai counted the days. He had been living here for nearly a week. Fu Xingjian should have lowered his guard by now; he felt he could find an opportunity to leave secretly.
However, whenever he mentioned this to Gu Yanxiu, the man would always tell him in a serious tone not to act blindly.
Wen Yuhuai had no choice but to continue hiding there. But he wasn’t a fool; if it didn’t work once or twice, it might be justifiable, but if it never worked, there was something fishy.
He had to suspect whether Gu Yanxiu also had the idea of locking him up.
Since he was still on the man’s territory, he couldn’t show it too obviously. So, he disguised himself and went out to the station once.
This was his first time going out after so many days. From his perspective, there was nothing unusual about the station. People were coming and going, as lively as ever, and there were no suspicious individuals.
But it was better to be safe than sorry. Wen Yuhuai still didn’t dare to act blindly. He turned around, hailed a taxi, and went back to the apartment.
To his surprise, Gu Yanxiu returned that very night.
Wen Yuhuai was startled and couldn’t help but feel a bit guilty. “Why are you back?”
Gu Yanxiuâs gaze toward him was eerily calm. He asked instead of answering, “Did you go out today?”
Wen Yuhuai subconsciously took two steps back to distance himself. He weighed his words and tried to speak as tactfully as possible. “Senior, Iâve already stayed at your place long enough. I just don’t want to keep bothering you.”
Gu Yanxiu still watched him quietly. After a moment, the corners of his lips curled into a somewhat helpless arc. “How could you be a bother? A-Yu, you know that Iâ”
Wen Yuhuaiâs temples throbbed, and he urgently interrupted him. “Senior, itâs late. You should rest early. Iâm going back to sleep too.”
In the massive living room, only one person remained. The smile on Gu Yanxiuâs lips flattened out bit by bit.
He hadn’t even done anything yet, and the boy already wanted to leave.
A moment later, he seemed to have come to a decision, and a smile rippled in his eyes and on his brow again.
Forget it. If he wants to leave, let him leave. This period is indeed a turbulent time. Itâs better to let him leave the capital first; that way, he might remember me fondly.
If the day ever comes when he truly has to make a choice, Iâll have a few more chips in my favor.
