Chapter 24: The Backpack part 1
Bai Qi slept like a log, and the rest of the night passed peacefully.
At nine the next morning, everyone gathered in the small hall downstairs. The class monitor, who had arrived earliest, made small talk with the others, but his eyes kept darting toward the stairs, anxious to see how Bai Qi was doing.
That bed was so small, he thought. Did Bo Yan sleep with his arms around him? And that huge mirror… Bo Yan probably snuck a kiss in front of it.
He couldn’t believe Bo Yan had gotten so lucky.
The class monitor sighed. Soon, students began to trickle downstairs, and at exactly nine o’clock, two exceptionally handsome figures appeared.
Since they were heading into the mountains, Bo Yan and Bai Qi had both changed into sportswear. Bai Qi, worried about getting his clothes dirty, had chosen black, while Bo Yan wore a crisp, clean white without a care in the world.
As they descended the stairs side-by-side, they looked so perfectly matched they could have been a couple.
Many heads turned, so the class monitor’s staring didn’t seem out of place. He carefully examined Bai Qi, noting the healthy, rosy glow on his fair skin and the bright, happy look in his eyes, and felt a wave of relief.
He smiled and called out a greeting. As Bai Qi walked toward him, his own eyes curving into a smile, the monitor focused on checking his neck for any secret kiss marks.
That Bo Yan wouldn’t just stop at kissing his cheek.
As the fragrant, soft boy drew nearer, the monitor widened his eyes, scanning every inch but finding nothing out of the ordinary.
Maybe I was wrong about Bo Yan? he wondered. Just then, Bo Yan passed by him, his tall, lean frame casting an imposing shadow. He seemed less cold than usual, almost in a good mood.
The monitor was about to look away when a flash of movement caught his eye.
As Bo Yan walked, his collar shifted, revealing a patch of red on his neck.
A mosquito bite? It didn’t quite look like one.
The monitor froze for a second, then leaned in for a closer look. There, on the pale skin of Bo Yan’s neck, was a red mark that looked suspiciously like a bite mark—two small, sharp rows of indentations in a place that was just impossibly suggestive.
The monitor’s expression went blank. Did Bai Qi do that? It had to be, right? Bo Yan couldn’t have done that to himself.
What was going on? He was completely baffled and immediately pulled out his phone to send a message.
Meanwhile, Bai Qi was feeling refreshed. He’d thought the small bed would mean a poor night’s sleep, but perhaps because he couldn’t toss and turn, he’d fallen asleep quickly.
He didn’t know what time Bo Yan had gotten up, but he’d been in the shower for a while, leaving Bai Qi to sprawl out on the little bed and stretch his limbs.
The only downside was that there seemed to be bugs in the mountains. He had a few red spots on his stomach and legs, but thankfully, they didn’t hurt or itch.
Everyone was soon gathered, and just as they were about to head out, the class monitor’s message came through.
Bai Qi glanced at the monitor, who was standing nearby with a serious expression, and curiously opened the message, only to see the incredibly blunt question.
[Did you bite Bo Yan’s neck?]
Bai Qi’s eyes widened, his heart skipping a beat. He quickly turned to look at Bo Yan.
At that exact moment, Bo Yan turned his head, making the bite mark on his neck impossible to miss.
Bai Qi was instantly flooded with regret. Yesterday, he’d been too embarrassed to bite his chest, so he’d settled for a spot lower on his neck, thinking his collar would hide it.
Flustered, he typed back a clumsy excuse: “I-I just tripped yesterday and bumped into his neck.”
The class monitor snorted. [Do I look like an idiot?]
He knew from Bai Qi’s reaction that he’d definitely been the one to do the biting. Now he just wanted to know why. Had Bo Yan bullied him?
Bai Qi was in a bind. He couldn’t talk about the acting practice without Bo Yan’s permission.
After a moment of hesitation, he typed, “Actually, I’m a restless sleeper, and the bed was too small. I had a nightmare and bit him by accident.”
Bai Qi thought he wouldn’t fall for it this time either, but surprisingly, the class monitor seemed to believe him. [What did Bo Yan do? Did he get mad?]
“No, he’s got a really good temper.” And it was true, Bo Yan had let him bite him without a word.
The class monitor fell silent after reading the message.
He thought he had it figured out. Bo Yan must have tried to sneak a kiss in the middle of the night, scaring Bai Qi into having a nightmare and biting him.
At least he has the decency not to complain after being bitten, he thought. But why didn’t he cover it with a bandage? Stars are usually so careful about things like that.
Thinking back on everything that had happened, a thought flickered in the class monitor’s mind. He had a faint feeling that this time, Bo Yan might actually be serious.
If he were just playing around with Bai Qi, he would have done everything possible to hide it, to stamp out any hint of a rumor.
But Bo Yan was doing the exact opposite, even letting the couple pairing gain traction. It was hard not to think he was paving the way for Bai Qi’s reputation in the future.
Looking up at Bo Yan’s tall, straight back, the class monitor’s prejudice softened slightly.
After a moment, he replied, “Well, that’s good. If Bo Yan doesn’t care, then you don’t need to worry about it.”
Bai Qi had been thinking of asking for a bandage to help Bo Yan cover it, but hearing the monitor’s advice, he figured he had a point and let it go.
Fortunately, no one got close enough to Bo Yan to notice, and for now, only the class monitor had seen it.
Soon, the group walked out of the villa, only to find something was off.
Yesterday, the crowd had been large but mostly consisted of middle-aged tour groups. Today, there were a lot more young, solo tourists. The moment they saw the group emerge, they excitedly rushed over. There were even people in the trees, and countless cameras were clicking away.
The class monitor’s heart sank. He guessed their location had been leaked, but thankfully not too widely, or they would have been completely swamped by now.
He quickly herded everyone onto the bus. The students, who had never experienced anything like this, hurried on, a mixture of fear and excitement.
Bai Qi and Bo Yan had already pulled on their masks and hoods. Bai Qi took the window seat to block the view, then reached over to pull down the shade.
Just before it closed, his hand paused.
Standing behind the crowd was a familiar figure. One leg was in a cast, and he leaned on a crutch, his gaze fixed intently on him and Bo Yan.
Bai Qi’s eyes widened. He quickly shut the blind, his heart pounding long after the bus had started moving.
Why was Lin Feng here?
A man with a broken leg, suddenly showing up at a mountain resort, staring at him and Bo Yan… even from a distance, it made Bai Qi’s skin crawl.
Seeing his pale face, Bo Yan frowned. “What’s wrong?”
Bai Qi’s voice was shaky. “I just saw Lin Feng outside, and he was staring at us.”
Bo Yan, however, was calm. He nodded. “It’s fine. I won’t leave your side.”
Looking at his firm, cool profile, Bai Qi gradually calmed down, feeling a little safer.
He was right. With Bo Yan by his side, he had nothing to fear, no matter what Lin Feng was planning.
The atmosphere inside the bus was lively. It was the first time the students had gotten a taste of what it was like to be a celebrity, and they excitedly peered out the windows.
A number of cars were still following them.
The class monitor had specifically told the driver to head to a more remote part of the scenic area to avoid the crowds.
Soon, the bus wound its way to a secluded spot. Although it was off the beaten path, the scenery was stunning, and there was even a natural cave.
As soon as they stepped off the bus, the fresh air hit them, and the students immediately scattered, excitedly running off to explore.
The class monitor shouted after them, “You have one hour of free time! Don’t go too far! And check in with the group chat every hour!”
A chorus of agreement came back, and then they were gone, eagerly heading towards the cave.
Bo Yan turned to Bai Qi. “Do you want to go in?”
