Chapter 28: The Unreachable Cold God (3)
Mr. Li, the homeroom teacher of Class 9, held a short class meeting during morning reading after arriving in the classroom and rearranged the seating.
The homeroom teacher arranged the seats according to height. Therefore, when lining up in the corridor, Huo Xian and He Wenqu undoubtedly ended up at the back. He Wenqu was an outgoing and cheerful boy. He wasn’t intimidated by Huo Xian’s cold demeanor and enthusiastically greeted him, “Hey, classmate, what’s your name? My name is He Wenqu, I’m sixteen, and my hobbies are playing basketball and video games.”
Huo Xian gave him a faint glance but didn’t respond.
He Wenqu wasn’t embarrassed and continued to chatter, “You must be six feet tall. I see you have muscles in your arms; do you also play basketball? We can have a match on the court.”
Huo Xian still ignored him.
He Wenqu couldn’t help but touch the tip of his nose, thinking: This future deskmate is really cold. But he firmly believed that no heart was unopenable. Now his future deskmate wasn’t familiar with him, but once they became familiar, they would definitely be able to play basketball together happily.
“Hey, move.” While He Wenqu was fantasizing, an unwelcome voice rang out.
He looked towards the speaker and it was Mei Heng, standing out among the group of students in school uniforms.
He Wenqu frowned, “What?”
“He’s my future deskmate.” Mei Heng pointed his chin at Huo Xian.
He Wenqu looked at the students who were mostly already inside the classroom, raising the corners of his lips and smiling, “Deskmates are determined by height.”
Mei Heng was also nearly five foot ten, but next to him was another student who was closer to six feet tall, in front of Huo Xian. But was Mei Heng such an obedient student?
As Mei Heng and the student next to him were about to enter the classroom, Mei Heng reached out and stopped the student, dragging him behind Huo Xian with a puzzled, slightly fearful look on his face.
Huo Xian looked at him.
Mei Heng raised his eyebrows, smirking, “Future deskmate, please?”
Compared to having He Wenqu as his deskmate, Huo Xian preferred Mei Heng.
He Wenqu’s expression froze for a moment. He wanted to tattle to the homeroom teacher but felt it was embarrassing. It wasn’t kindergarten; fighting over a deskmate was unnecessary. But to be fair, that flashy-looking boy was really annoying.
When the homeroom teacher saw Mei Heng again, he couldn’t help but remind him to wear his school uniform at school. Mei Heng ignored him.
There were 44 people in Class 9, and Huo Xian and Mei Heng happened to be assigned to the sixth row by the wall. Before Huo Xian sat down, Mei Heng said, “I want the seat by the window.”
Would Huo Xian grant his wish?
Of course not.
[Huo Xian, this seat has a wide view and is the best viewing spot in the entire classroom. Don’t give it to him.] Huo Yuan said earnestly.
Huo Xian replied, [Yeah, I won’t.]
Mei Heng watched Huo Xian sit down by the window, and a vein throbbed on his forehead. He narrowed his eyes, his body enveloped in danger, his fists clenched again.
Good, this was the second time today that someone had challenged his authority.
“Ahem!” The homeroom teacher’s voice interrupted Mei Heng’s brewing emotions, “Classmates, let’s identify our seats first, and then you have ten minutes to move your bags and stationery to your new seats. Those who need to use the restroom can go now. I’ll appoint a few class committee members to temporarily take charge of class affairs later.”
After saying this, the students of Class 9 began to bustle about. After Huo Xian returned to his new seat with his bag containing only two books and stationery, the homeroom teacher came over and asked kindly, “Are you Huo Xian?”
Huo Xian nodded, “Yes.”
The homeroom teacher smiled even brighter, “Don’t be nervous, teacher wants you to come to the office after class. It’s at the end of the east corridor.”
Huo Xian wasn’t nervous, nodding, “Okay, teacher.”
The first class, Chinese, continued the previous class meeting. The first part was for all students to take turns introducing themselves on the podium and getting to know each other.
Most of the girls in the class were waiting for Huo Xian to go on stage. Just as it was Huo Xian’s turn, Mei Heng curled his lips into a malicious smile and suddenly stuck out a leg in the aisle as Huo Xian passed by. Even if Huo Xian didn’t trip, he would still stumble. He liked to see these pretentious people get flustered.
However, Mei Heng didn’t see Huo Xian trip; instead, he felt a sharp pain in his ankle, his expression contorting in pain.
“You…” Mei Heng glared at the culprit.
Huo Xian looked down at his feet, seemingly realizing what he had just kicked, mumbled an insincere apology, and went to the podium.
Mei Heng’s expression visibly darkened.
“I’m Huo Xian.” Huo Xian’s self-introduction was concise, even omitting the common greeting “Nice to meet you,” and there was no typical concluding phrase like “I hope to get along well with everyone in the future.” He was incredibly aloof.
“Uh…” The homeroom teacher almost dropped his glasses, quickly catching them and calling out to him, “Huo Xian, don’t you want to say a few more words?”
“No.” Huo Xian refused, calmly walking back to his seat.
As soon as he sat down, he heard a sinister voice in his ear, “Huo Xian, you’re really something. I’ll remember this.”
“Next student?” The homeroom teacher urged when Mei Heng didn’t go to the podium.
Mei Heng didn’t even go to the podium, stood up, coldly said, “Mei Heng,” and sat down, continuing to glare at Huo Xian with a sinister look.
He Wenqu’s self-introduction drew enthusiastic applause. He was naturally outgoing and cheerful, tall, handsome, and had a sunny smile and a charming dimple that was very popular with girls. His smile was incredibly charming, even Mei Heng was affected by the class’s reaction and looked at him a few more times.
From beginning to end, Huo Xian didn’t even lift his head.
When appointing class committee members, the homeroom teacher hesitated between He Wenqu and Huo Xian before deciding to prioritize grades over personality. Huo Xian was temporarily appointed as class monitor, and He Wenqu, whose grades were outside the top ten, got the position of sports committee member.
The first thing they did after becoming class committee members was to move books.
…
On the first official day of high school, classes naturally weren’t able to start properly. There were eight classes in a day, eight different subjects, and even the cultural course teachers hadn’t all been introduced yet.
Oh yes, there were thirteen subjects in Haicheng high school, including nine cultural subjects and four quality education subjects. In Grade 1, there was no distinction between main and secondary cultural subjects, and quality education subjects included physical education, art, music, and computer science. Except for physical education, which had two classes a week, the other three subjects only had one class each. The school’s educational focus was still on cultural subjects. But in recent years, educational authorities have paid more attention to the physical and mental health of high school students, so no school forced students to stay up late and study hard anymore.
Despite this, Huo Xian still felt a headache picking up his books again after returning to high school.
Huo Yuan gave him a bad idea, [Huo Xian, I’ll help you study. I can tell you the answers to your homework and exams.]
Huo Xian: […]
He was quite amused and helplessly said, [Huo Yuan, that’s cheating.]
[But you seem to dislike these books…] Huo Yuan said aggrievedly.
Huo Xian explained with a smile, [I don’t dislike books; it’s just that I’ve already experienced three years of high school in my original world, and now I have to do it again, which makes me feel a bit complicated.]
[Is that so…] Huo Yuan pondered for a moment and then said, [Then you’ll probably have to get used to it. You might have to study in the mission world later.]
Huo Xian: […] Suddenly, the cute Huo Yuan wasn’t so cute anymore.
“Hey, Huo Xian, shall we leave together after school?” It was the third evening self-study session. It was nearing the end of school, and the students in the class started to get restless. He Wenqu was like he was sitting on pins and needles, twisting around for a long time before turning to Huo Xian and inviting him.
Mei Heng had left after school in the afternoon, so He Wenqu could talk to him without any obstacles.
Huo Xian temporarily stopped what he was doing. Without looking at He Wenqu, he raised his voice slightly, “Quiet.”
Although the class committee members all had the right to take notes, because they were mostly temporary committee members, no one wanted to offend anyone on the first day, so they remained silent. Huo Xian hadn’t spoken before, but surprisingly, the students in Class 9 were a little afraid of Huo Xian. As soon as he spoke, Class 9 immediately fell silent. He Wenqu wanted to invite him again but felt embarrassed.
Soon, the school bell rang, and the entire teaching building immediately became lively, but soon complaints arose.
It was raining.
“Class monitor, it’s raining. My driver is picking me up. Can I get a ride?” He Wenqu happily approached Huo Xian.
Huo Xian took out an umbrella from his bag and replied calmly, “No.”
He Wenqu didn’t give up, “Look at this heavy rain and strong wind. It’s dangerous to ride a bike with an umbrella, not to mention you’ll be soaked by the time you get home. Since we’re going the same way, Class Monitor, give me a chance to show my kindness?”
His tone was natural, and with his pleasing face, another person might have accepted his offer for a ride.
His deskmate feigned jealousy, “Brother Qu, don’t ordinary classmates deserve your kindness?”
He Wenqu said cheerfully, “Of course, I can also have my driver send you if you need it. Do you want a ride?”
His deskmate said regretfully, “Alas, I’m a boarding student.”
“Do you need an umbrella? I have one here.” He Wenqu thoughtfully offered his umbrella.
His deskmate repeatedly waved his hands, “Cars can’t enter the school from outside. Your driver will pick you up at the school gate, so you’ll have to walk yourself. It’s only a few minutes to my dorm, and I’ll shower when I get back anyway, so it’s fine.”
“Although it’s still hot, it’s best not to get wet… How about this, I’ll bring you some packaged brown sugar ginger tea tomorrow, just in case.” He Wenqu said.
“Brother Qu, you’re so thoughtful!” His deskmate was moved.
Huo Xian, witnessing He Wenqu’s interactions, walked past them with his bag on his back. He Wenqu kept talking to his deskmate, but his eyes were glued to Huo Xian as soon as he moved. He was about to speak when he saw Huo Xian take out his phone from his pocket to answer a call, and was surprised.
His deskmate also whispered, “The class monitor actually carries a phone?”
He Wenqu patted his shoulder, “Go back to the dorm quickly. I’ll go first too. See you tomorrow.” He quickly chased after Huo Xian.
“Are you at the school gate already? Okay, I know, I’ll come down right away.” About a meter away from Huo Xian, He Wenqu heard Huo Xian speak softly into the phone.
He quickened his pace to catch up with Huo Xian, casually saying, “Class monitor, is your family picking you up?”
Huo Xian responded faintly with an “Hmm.”
He Wenqu couldn’t help but scratch his head. He considered himself a social expert, but today, he had initiated conversations with Huo Xian at least fifteen times, and Huo Xian either ignored him or gave perfunctory responses. If Huo Xian hadn’t ignored everyone else, he would have suspected that he was being disliked.
However, his best friend, You Zi’an, had also been an autistic child when he was younger, but now he talked a lot more. The class monitor was so cold because they were not yet familiar.
Speaking of which, You Zi’an had a fever after military training the day before yesterday and didn’t come to school today. He should visit him later and hope that he’s recovered.
[Ding.]
Hearing this sound, Huo Xian suddenly thought of a phrase—Your exclusive little darling is online.
Thinking of this, his cold face, maintained all day, finally broke into a smile.
He Wenqu, who happened to see his smiling side profile, paused, his heart inexplicably skipping a beat. Before he could look closer, Huo Xian had already gone downstairs.
[Huo Xian, You Zi’an didn’t come to school today, but he should have already been bound to the system and will soon begin his transformation.]
Author’s Note: In this story, Brother Xian is truly cold (emphasis) to outsiders, the kind of cold that has no emotions and chills to the bone.
