Vicious Cannon Fodder, But a Squeamish Heartthrob chapter 11

Chapter 11: As Long as Yu Deng Is Here, He Won’t Leave

“You’re here for work, right?”

Yu Deng held the ice pop while counting his change. His little cat-like head nodded: “He works; I accompany him.”

His voice was as sweet as syrup, and his eyes curved as he spoke. He carried a natural three-part smile, and his bright eyes and white teeth were so endearing that anyone looking at him would find him adorable and feel a surge of motherly affection.

The shop lady also assumed they were brothers with a good relationship.

“Well, now that you’ve rented a place here, daily life won’t be easy.”

“If you’re going to stay for a while, you can buy some seeds and plant some vegetables on the rooftop. It’ll save you some grocery money.”

However, she took another look at Yu Deng’s face and felt that he was meant for the good life. No matter how hard things got, they couldn’t let this little Bodhisattva suffer.

Yu Deng gave two soft “mhm mhm”s. He didn’t stay long, taking his money and heading to the neighboring stairwell.

“I’m going home.”

His legs in his shorts were dazzlingly white, brighter than the sun overhead. The breeze caught his colorful T-shirt, making him look like a butterfly.

He truly should be carefree.

Zhou Yuejun was considering whether to buy a TV or an air conditioner first. After thinking it over, he decided on the TV.

An air conditioner was too expensive; with his current savings, he couldn’t afford it at all, so it would have to be postponed for another year.

If he bought a TV, he could take it with him when they moved. He planned to rent a place outside Yu Deng’s university so they could live together on weekends.

However, apartments near schools were expensive; he had to earn more money.

Taking advantage of the lunch break, Zhou Yuejun quickly grabbed his food but wasn’t in a hurry to return to the rental. Instead, he went to the foreman’s office.

The office was on the second floor. When Zhou Yuejun knocked, the foreman, Wu Da, was on the phone.

The fan in the room was whirring loudly. Because Wu Da was heavily built, he was still drenched in sweat.

Wu Da wiped his forehead with a towel, his attitude respectful: “Yes, President Zhou, don’t worry. I’m keeping a close eye on the site; nothing will go wrong.”

Wu Da wasn’t actually the big boss of this project; he was just a supervisor. He had someone above him.

The call ended, and Wu Da let out a long breath. He quickly wiped the sweat from his head and neck, then took two bottles of frozen boiled water from the fridge on his right.

“This weather is truly hot. I lose two or three catties of sweat a day. I’ll buy an air conditioner tomorrow.”

“What’s up? Something for me?”

“Let’s get this straight: no salary advances. I’m truly tapped out.”

“Every single one of you has barely worked two days before coming to me for money. My pockets are about to be picked clean.”

Zhou Yuejun was still holding his bowl. After receiving the water, he set it aside without drinking, getting straight to the point.

“Where’s the next job? Is it in the city?”

“In the city?” Wu Da chuckled. Though he was fat, he wasn’t oily; instead, he looked like a man with good fortune.

He used the cold water bottle against his neck to cool down: “It might not even be in the province. President Zhou said the land along the coast is promising and wants me to take men there.”

Hearing this, Zhou Yuejun’s sharp brows pressed down, though he wasn’t too troubled.

Wu Da guessed Zhou Yuejun’s thoughts: “You want to stay in the city?”

“The coast is developing well, there are many big bosses. I can see you’re not someone without prospects. Go out and try your luck; there are more opportunities.”

“I heard President Zhou say he has a few projects over there and lacks people he can trust. If you want to go, I’ll put in a few good words for you. If he takes a liking to you, he might let you oversee a site.”

“What do you think?”

Wu Da had watched people for many years; he could tell at a glance if someone was a dragon or a rat.

With Zhou Yuejun’s build and character, he wasn’t destined to sell his labor at a construction site for his whole life.

When Zhou Yuejun quit his welding job, it wasn’t that he hadn’t thought about going to the coast, but he hadn’t taken that far of a step for his first move, choosing a local spot instead.

He had Yu Deng now. Although Yu Deng hadn’t received his results or filled out his preferences yet, Yu Deng had said he wanted to attend university locally.

Even for the chance to be a foreman, Zhou Yuejun remained firm: “My younger brother is here. I’m not leaving.”

Wu Da took two sips of ice water and asked one more question: “How old?”

Zhou Yuejun: “Graduated high school.”

“He’s not two or three years old, he can’t be that inseparable. If you really want, take him along. I’ll have him work under Wen-zi first, learn how to manage accounts and materials. He can help you at the site then, right?”

Zhou Yuejun: “He wants to study, to go to university.”

Hearing “university,” Wu Da immediately went “Oh,” and his attitude became more serious: “A man of culture. Cultured people truly don’t eat from the same bowl as us.”

“Fine then. I know a brother who heard about a job building a school; work should start in two months. If you want to go, I’ll ask for you.”

“Alright.”

Zhou Yuejun only wanted to ask Wu Da if he would still be in the city after this project was finished. Even in this province would be fine, so he could continue working with Wu Da.

But since Wu Da was going out of province, he couldn’t do it.

Wu Da introducing him to work added a layer of networking, making things more convenient.

Yu Deng had intended to go downstairs to buy lunch, but as soon as he stepped away from the electric fan, he felt he was about to melt.

He wished he could carry the fan on his back wherever he went.

However, he kept his mission in mind: he had to spend money!

As soon as he stepped out the door, he ran into Zhou Yuejun coming home.

[Quick, get angry! Bully the male lead!]

Receiving 107’s instruction, Yu Deng immediately put on a cold face, gritted his teeth, and even clenched his fists. He snorted through his nose and began to blame the man in a soft, melodic voice.

“Why are you back so late? My stomach is about to stick to my back from hunger!”

“Do you just not want to take care of me at all? Do you want to starve me to death at home?”

Clearly, Zhou Yuejun had left him money, but “Yu Deng” was a bad-tempered person who always wanted to be unreasonable to strike at and motivate Zhou Yuejun.

But the little beauty’s face was truly too lovely. His amber, round eyes were wide and staring, as clear as spring water. Even if there were a few sparks of fire, it was more a sense of moistness.

Somehow, it naturally carried three parts innocence and three parts affection.

In this way, losing his temper became acting spoiled, along with a pitiful sense of grievance.

Zhou Yuejun had gone to see Wu Da this noon, and he indeed came back late. Immediately, he apologized with total compliance.

“I went to talk to the foreman; it took a bit of time. It’s not that I don’t want to take care of you.”

“Are you very hungry? I bought you the ribs you wanted to eat yesterday.”

Zhou Yuejun’s tone was naturally rough, not smooth or elegant, but at this moment, one could hear his affectionate soothing.

Yu Deng acted a bit longer, pulling a long face and pretending to be unhappy, while actually calculating in his heart.

Zhou Yuejun gave him money for food every day and also brought food back for him. This way, he was spending two portions of money on himself.

Zhou Yuejun would surely want to earn more money because he couldn’t afford to raise him.

Aiya, there was nothing for it. He was a bad cannon fodder who loved luxury and hated work; all the hard labor would have to be done by the male lead.
