Chapter 21: Does It Still Hurt?
Zhou Yuejun still held Yu Deng’s wrist: “Don’t spread the word. It’s easy for someone to steal your spot.”
Many families with money whose children weren’t good at studying would come up with crooked ideas, having their own child replace someone else’s spot at university.
Such incidents were not uncommon; Zhou Yuejun had to be extra careful for Yu Deng.
Zhou Yuejun walked on Yu Deng’s right, shielding him from the sun.
“I’ll take a leave of absence in a couple of days and accompany you back to the county seat. We’ll ask the teachers at school about filling out the preferences.”
He was not a man of letters and his knowledge was limited, so he naturally wouldn’t arrogantly dictate Yu Deng’s future.
Besides, if they encountered people from Yu Deng’s family, it wouldn’t result in Yu Deng being bullied alone.
With someone taking care of things for him, Yu Deng naturally wouldn’t be ungrateful. He took two or three skipping steps into a restaurant and ordered three meat dishes in one breath.
Then, he pouted quite proudly, with a bit of a show-off air: “We have a fridge at home now. It won’t go bad!”
His appearance was endearing; even if he was a bit arrogant, it wouldn’t make people dislike him.
On the contrary, the owner was cheerful, quickly agreeing and even making a joke: “Your lips are already red from the spice, and you still want to eat so much chili?”
Then, failing to notice Yu Deng’s embarrassed blush, he hurried to the back kitchen to cook for them.
After Zhou Yuejun wiped the table and stools, he whispered a reminder as Yu Deng sat down: “Does it still hurt?”
Abruptly, Yu Deng realized what Zhou Yuejun was referring to. He glared at the man indignantly, yet a layer of pink powder dusted his doughy face.
He gave Zhou Yuejun’s leg a kick.
“Shut up!”
However, luck was simply that bad; they ran into a few workers from the construction site again.
Compared to the ones last time, these three were even more thuggish. They didn’t look like street punks but rather like villains from a police movie—from their gaze to their behavior, they radiated a stinging malice.
Catching sight of Zhou Yuejun, they immediately rubbed their bellies and surrounded them.
Yu Deng was shielded behind Zhou Yuejun. Just as he took an uneasy peek, Zhou Yuejun suddenly stood up. His body was like a mountain, blocking out all the unpleasantness.
The leader had a buzz cut, with a four or five-centimeter scar on the top of his head. With a twist of his mouth, he looked incredibly sinister.
“Yo, eating, are we? You’ve been living quite a comfortable life lately.”
After speaking, the man wanted to sit down at their table.
Zhou Yuejun didn’t want these things to foul Yu Deng’s eyes. As his gaze turned dark and predatory, his hand also rose, the hard muscle on his thick arm ready to strike.
“Try sitting down.”
Clearly, it was a forty-degree day, yet through those narrow, sharp, and somber eyes, the buzz-cut man felt a chill. He felt Zhou Yuejun was like a God of Slaughter, his entire being shrouded in dark energy.
For a moment, he truly felt a bit of trepidation toward Zhou Yuejun and didn’t sit down.
However, he did have people behind him and didn’t want to lose too much face.
The buzz-cut man let out a cold laugh and curled his thick, fleshy lips.
“After hanging around the nightclub for a while, you think you’re a big shot? We aren’t even qualified to eat with you now? It’s not like I haven’t seen you eat a couple extra bites when grabbing food usually. What are you pretending for?”
Nightclub?
Yu Deng’s pupils constricted. He frowned, his mind turning, but he couldn’t make sense of it.
But he surmised that Zhou Yuejun might have a close relationship with the nightclub.
He wouldn’t be doing anything illegal behind the scenes, would he?
Seeing that Zhou Yuejun was ignoring them, his cold brows pressed down in total disdain, the three became even more provocative, wanting to rile him up.
“But you sure are lucky with the ladies, kid, being able to enter that ‘gold-melting cave.'”
“Put in a word with the manager, see if you can get us brothers in there too.”
The work at the nightclub was easy and offered plenty of perks. The three of them had thought about it, but they couldn’t get in.
Zhou Yuejun didn’t want to talk to them at all, yet he forcefully restrained himself from acting, offering only a cold refusal.
“I don’t make the calls.”
The nightclub sought people to manage those who caused trouble. If they hired people who were clearly dishonest, it would only be harder to manage. The nightclub had no interest in the likes of the buzz-cut man and his group.
Zhou Yuejun’s arrogant and dismissive attitude caused great dissatisfaction. The buzz-cut man felt a fire of anger in his heart. His murky, rat-like eyes were lustful and disgusting, and his words became even viler.
“Hey, you’ve been there so long, you must have tried them all, right? Do you know any who are comfortable enough? Bring them out for us to play with.”
Just hearing those words, Yu Deng felt like vomiting even before he had eaten.
Could these people not survive if their brains weren’t tied to their crotches?
Zhou Yuejun’s expression also became terrifyingly dark: “If you want comfort, go to the shop. Xie Meng’s men have plenty of ways to make you ‘comfortable.'”
Xie Meng was the owner of the nightclub and had some influence in the area. Without a background, anyone making trouble at his place wouldn’t have a good ending.
Clearly, the “comfort” Zhou Yuejun spoke of was different from what those three meant.
Just then, the restaurant owner brought the dishes out. Seeing the situation, he knew it wasn’t right and hesitated to come forward.
Zhou Yuejun knit his blade-like brows, suppressing his gloom: “Pack it up. We’ll take it back.”
It wasn’t that Zhou Yuejun was a coward. These few had criminal records. If he were alone, he certainly wouldn’t have cared and would have gone at them without taking a bit of their crap.
But he was afraid of making them desperate enough to play dirty—to use some disgusting, underhanded tricks and target Yu Deng.
He truly hoped these three would go make trouble at Xie Meng’s place.
Once a scene was made, they would be Xie Meng’s enemies. Without him having to lift a finger, Xie Meng would make these few behave.
Zhou Yuejun held the food in one hand and firmly grasped Yu Deng’s hand with the other, shielding him as they left.
The three didn’t stop them, but they held a grudge, their poison-filled eyes full of resentment.
Once they had walked a short distance, Yu Deng still felt a lingering fear. His pace didn’t slow, yet he couldn’t suppress the curiosity in his heart.
“Are those three from your construction site?”
They looked so bad and greasy. Their entire bodies reeked, and they spoke as if they were spraying filth.
Zhou Yuejun: “Mhm. The project has a tight deadline, so they hired a lot of people.”
There were simple and hardworking ones, and then there were ones like the buzz-cut man. As long as they didn’t cause trouble at the site, Wu Da turned a blind eye.
But compared to those troublemakers, Wu Da naturally favored someone like Zhou Yuejun, who was steady and hard-working and didn’t cause so many issues.
“Then what was that about the nightclub just now?”
“What are you doing? Are you committing robbery? Or… harming innocent women?”
Zhou Yuejun: “…”
Sensing the gravity in Yu Deng’s questioning, Zhou Yuejun didn’t hide anything and admitted it directly.
“No. I won’t commit robbery, I won’t harm innocent women, and I certainly won’t sell anything ‘dirty.'”
“I’m just guarding the venue at the nightclub at night. There are many people who drink and cause trouble.”
“It’s not as bad as you think.”
Of course, there was also a dirty side.
A nightclub was ultimately a place of wine and women, wandering in a gray area.
Zhou Yuejun didn’t know if Yu Deng believed him; at any rate, the boy’s pouting mouth was enough to hang an oil jar from, and his soft white cheeks were puffed out.
What should he do? Had he squeezed the male lead too hard? The male lead was starting to break the law.
