Chapter 105: I Won’t Lie Anymore
Gu Huaiye began to get very busy again.
He thought about how they couldn’t keep renting forever; he needed to buy a three-bedroom apartment as soon as possible so they could live more comfortably. That way, if he accidentally vanished one day, he wouldn’t have to worry about Xie Miaohan being homeless.
Unfortunately, housing prices in District A were exorbitant. With his current salary, it would take several years just to save up for the down payment.
So, Gu Huaiye took on a part-time job translating documents for people after work.
One day, he worked until very late again.
He raised his arms to stretch his back, then closed his laptop, grabbed a set of pajamas from the wardrobe, and left the room to go to the bathroom.
Not long after the bathroom door clicked shut, the door to the room opposite his opened.
Xie Miaohan glanced at the bathroom, then tiptoed into Gu Huaiye’s room.
Climbing onto the chair, he picked up the wallet Gu Huaiye had left on the desk.
Xie Miaohan took a deep breath, a glint of anticipation flashing in his eyes. He opened the wallet, his gaze landing on the photo inside.
Seeing that it was still the photo of that uncle, the smile on Xie Miaohan’s face vanished.
The photo of him and Brother from the field trip hadn’t been put in at all.
Even though the size was appropriate and it would have fit perfectly.
Xie Miaohan couldn’t understand why Gu Huaiye was still thinking about this dead uncle.
This uncle had abandoned Gu Huaiye; he had no right to constantly make Gu Huaiye shed tears over this photo.
Xie Miaohan’s eyes darkened slightly.
Unresigned, he pulled the photo out, preparing to tear it up.
He had only made a small tear when his movements froze.
No. If Gu Huaiye loses this photo, he will definitely be very angry. He might not forgive me, and he might even kick me out for good.
After thinking it over, Xie Miaohan put the photo back.
Hearing movement from the bathroom, he hurriedly scrambled down from the chair and slipped back into his own room.
Gu Huaiye walked out of the bathroom, a towel in hand, drying the water droplets from his hair.
He returned to his room and looked at his desk, frowning slightly.
Did I leave my wallet on the edge of the desk?
Gu Huaiye really couldn’t remember, so he decided not to dwell on it.
Half a month later, Gu Huaiye noticed that something was wrong with Xie Miaohan.
There were always bruises on his knees and elbows.
sometimes, there were even graze marks on his chin.
After dinner, Gu Huaiye stared at Xie Miaohan with a solemn expression.
“Is a classmate bullying you?”
Xie Miaohan gripped his chopsticks tightly, lowered his head, and whispered, “No.”
“Then why do you have injuries on your knees?”
“I… I accidentally bumped into something…” Xie Miaohan stammered.
Gu Huaiye narrowed his eyes slightly but didn’t press further.
He’s definitely being bullied.
He knew Xie Miaohan had always been sensible. Even if something really happened at school, he would choose to shoulder it alone so as not to add to Gu Huaiye’s troubles.
Since asking wouldn’t get an answer, he could only ask the teacher to keep an eye out.
Gu Huaiye placed a chicken drumstick into Xie Miaohan’s bowl.
“Take a shower later, then come to my room. I’ll apply some medicine for you.”
Xie Miaohan’s eyes lit up, and he nodded happily.
“Okay.”
When Xie Miaohan came to Gu Huaiye’s room in his pajamas, Gu Huaiye lifted him onto the bed. He crouched down and carefully rolled up the boy’s pant legs. Upon seeing the wounds, his brow furrowed deeply.
“Does it hurt a lot? If I had known, I wouldn’t have let you shower. It’s winter anyway; you didn’t sweat much.”
“No,” Xie Miaohan shook his head. “Brother is a clean freak. You don’t like dirty children.”
Gu Huaiye smiled. “You are an exception.”
Xie Miaohan’s eyes curved into crescents as he stared intently at Gu Huaiye’s face.
“Brother, do you still have to work tonight?”
“Yeah.”
Gu Huaiye dipped a cotton swab in the medicinal solution and applied it to the wound on the knee. Afraid it would sting, he didn’t forget to blow on it gently.
“Does it hurt?”
Xie Miaohan shook his head. “It doesn’t hurt.”
Gu Huaiye sighed, saying helplessly, “You don’t need to be so tough with me. Cry if you need to; I won’t scold you.”
“Then can I let Brother coax me to sleep tonight?”
“I have a bit too much work tonight, so I might sleep very late.”
Hearing this, the light in Xie Miaohan’s eyes dimmed. “Brother, are we running out of money again?”
“Don’t worry about that. We have enough.”
Gu Huaiye put the medicine back in the box, stood up, and ruffled Xie Miaohan’s hair.
“It’s getting late. Go back to your room and sleep.”
“But my knees hurt so much, I can’t sleep.”
Gu Huaiye raised an eyebrow. “Didn’t you say it didn’t hurt just now?”
“It hurts now. It hurts after putting on the medicine.”
Seeing his red-rimmed eyes, as if he really was in pain, Gu Huaiye felt a bit annoyed with himself for applying the medicine so carelessly.
“Alright, I’ll coax you to sleep.”
Gu Huaiye picked him up, walked back to Xie Miaohan’s room, and placed him on the bed.
Xie Miaohan asked in confusion, “Not in Brother’s room?”
“I still have to work later. Leaving the light on will affect your sleep. Once I coax you to sleep, I’ll go back to my room.”
Xie Miaohan nodded. He patted the space beside him. “Brother join me too.”
“Okay, okay, okay.” Gu Huaiye got onto the bed helplessly.
He patted Xie Miaohan’s back while singing a lullaby.
Perhaps because he really was in pain, it took a long time for Gu Huaiye to coax him to sleep.
After leaving the room, he sent a message to Ms. Duan, asking her to help check if any students were bullying Xie Miaohan.
Ms. Duan observed for a week before calling Gu Huaiye.
“I asked a few students, and they all said no one is bullying Miaohan. Miaohan doesn’t interact much with his classmates usually. I suspect it might be students from outside the school.”
Gu Huaiye’s face darkened slightly.
He thanked Ms. Duan and decided to take two hours off work that day to secretly go to the school and see what was happening.
Gu Huaiye arrived opposite the school and stared at the gate, waiting for Xie Miaohan to come out.
Only after most of the students had left did Xie Miaohan walk out slowly, heading in the direction of home.
Gu Huaiye immediately followed.
He kept a certain distance from Xie Miaohan to avoid being discovered.
When they were only a few hundred meters from home, Xie Miaohan suddenly stopped and looked around.
Gu Huaiye quickly hid behind a tree. After two or three seconds, he peeked out quietly.
He saw Xie Miaohan throw himself onto the ground.
He did it repeatedly, several times. Then, he crouched down and pulled up his pants. Seeing his knees start to bleed, he smiled.
Gu Huaiye’s expression turned grim.
He walked over and stood in front of Xie Miaohan.
Xie Miaohan saw the familiar shoes and slowly looked up. When he met Gu Huaiye’s gaze, his face went pale.
“B-Brother…” Xie Miaohan’s voice couldn’t hide his panic. “Why did you… get off work so early today…”
Gu Huaiye didn’t speak. He took Xie Miaohan’s schoolbag, stepped around him, and walked forward.
Xie Miaohan’s heart tightened, and he hurriedly followed behind.
“Brother, I’m sorry. I won’t lie anymore.”
He just felt that Gu Huaiye was too busy and didn’t pay much attention to him.
The printed photo had been left in the drawer, as if its existence had long been forgotten.
He only did these things because he wanted Gu Huaiye to care about him occasionally.
“Brother… I’m sorry… I won’t dare do it again…”
Gu Huaiye stopped abruptly.
He turned around and hugged the weeping Xie Miaohan.
“I’m sorry. I should have cared for you more.”
He needed to take Xie Miaohan to see a psychologist.
