Chapter 12: You Are Free
When Gu Huaiye woke up this time, he was lying in a hotel room.
He looked around blankly, unable to recall how he had arrived there the previous night.
It wasn’t until he saw the note Chen Zirui had left on the table that he learned the truth: when Chen Zirui took him home, they discovered Xie Miaohan wasn’t at the apartment. Chen Zirui didn’t know the passcode, so he had no choice but to drop him off at a nearby hotel.
Perhaps he had already begun to accept the fact that Xie Miaohan didn’t love him.
Gu Huaiye’s emotions were much calmer this time.
Although his chest still felt a bit stifled, it wasn’t particularly agonizing.
He didn’t masochistically fantasize about scenes of Xie Miaohan and Wen Xuyue together anymore.
Gu Huaiye got out of bed. After washing up, he called room service to have breakfast sent up.
While eating a sandwich, he prepared to grab his phone to schedule a time with the hospital to visit his father.
Suddenly, Chen Zirui’s call popped up on the screen.
It was inconvenient to hold the phone while eating, so Gu Huaiye simply put it on speaker.
“You’re up pretty early today.” Gu Huaiye swallowed the bite of sandwich in his mouth. “I’m not drinking with you today; I’m going to visit my dad.”
He hadn’t dared to go to the hospital to accompany Father Gu these past few days, afraid of exposing his low spirits in front of him.
Now that his mood was a bit better, it was time to see the old man.
“Gu Huaiye, have you seen the news?”
Gu Huaiye shook his head. “No, what’s wrong?”
“Shit! Something huge happened! Your Gu Group invested in a new type of project and dumped tens of billions into it, but that project was a scam. The project manager has long since run off with the money. And that’s not even the most fatal part—your Accounting Director cooked the books and transferred a massive amount of funds abroad. Gu Group’s stock has already hit the limit down.”
Gu Huaiye’s brain buzzed.
He recognized every single word, yet when strung together, he couldn’t understand them.
“Gu Huaiye! Did you hear what I said?” Chen Zirui sounded incredibly anxious. He shouted Gu Huaiye’s name several times without getting a response, so he had to say, “Are you still at the hotel? I’m coming to find you right now!”
Gu Huaiye thought of a certain someone and hurriedly chased for answers, “What about Xie Miaohan? How is he? Did he order the fake accounts? Is he going to prison?”
Chen Zirui suddenly fell silent, and the atmosphere became weirdly quiet.
“Speak!” Gu Huaiye couldn’t wait. “Forget it, I’ll call him.”
“I heard from my dad that Xie Miaohan already resigned a month ago.”
“What!” Gu Huaiye froze, his brain crashing. “I don’t understand what you’re saying. How could he suddenly resign? He’s been going out to work these past few days.”
“I’m not too clear on the details either.”
Chen Zirui had only found out that the Gu Group was facing bankruptcy when he heard Father Chen mention it at the dinner table today.
At the time, Father Chen kept praising Xie Miaohan, saying he resigned just in time and had completely extricated himself clean.
“I also heard from my dad that when Xie Miaohan resigned, he sold all the Gu Group shares under his name.”
“Impossible!” Gu Huaiye denied it resolutely. “I’m a shareholder too; how could I not know anything?”
Wait.
He never went to meetings. He had handed the company over to Xie Miaohan to manage without a shred of concern.
“It was an internal transfer. He transferred them to your Little Uncle.”
Chen Zirui could roughly guess the picture now.
Presumably, Gu Huaiye’s Little Uncle was in a rush to acquire the remaining shares to become the majority shareholder of the Gu Group, so he hadn’t notified Gu Huaiye or Father Gu.
Listening to Chen Zirui’s news, Gu Huaiye could feel the blood all over his body turning ice-cold, and he couldn’t help but tremble.
“What’s even more bizarre is that your Financial Director is Wen Xuyue. Did you know that?”
Gu Huaiye shook his head. “I didn’t know. I always thought he was just an ordinary accountant.”
“I only found out he was the one who cooked the books after seeing the news. I heard he’s already been arrested, suspected of embezzlement.”
Chen Zirui sounded puzzled. “I just can’t figure it out. What was Wen Xuyue transferring funds for? Isn’t he Xie Miaohan’s lover? He shouldn’t be that short of money, right?”
Chen Zirui couldn’t shake the feeling that Xie Miaohan had orchestrated all of this, yet Xie Miaohan had perfectly avoided it all; nothing could be pinned on him.
It was said that the person who had originally eyed that project was also Gu Huaiye’s Little Uncle.
After Xie Miaohan resigned, Gu Huaiye’s Little Uncle became the CEO and signed that investment contract.
Gu Huaiye couldn’t listen anymore. He picked up the phone from the table.
His hands were shaking uncontrollably, almost unable to grip the device.
“I don’t believe this is real. I’m going to ask Xie Miaohan personally.”
“Hey, wait a sec, I’ll go with you…”
Gu Huaiye hung up on Chen Zirui, found Xie Miaohan’s number, and dialed it.
It only rang once before Xie Miaohan picked up.
“Where are you?”
Xie Miaohan paused for a moment before answering, “The company.”
Gu Huaiye’s emotions became agitated, his voice rising. “Liar! Chen Zirui told me everything. You resigned from the Gu Group long ago.”
“And you? Where are you?” Xie Miaohan asked back.
Seeing him avoid the previous question, Gu Huaiye couldn’t help but laugh out loud, his eyes turning red.
“I want to know, is all of this your doing?”
Xie Miaohan was silent for a split second, then said, “No.”
Gu Huaiye felt a desolate sorrow in his heart.
Even at this point, Xie Miaohan was still lying to him.
How could it be such a coincidence? Xie Miaohan sells his shares, resigns, and the company immediately meets with disaster.
“Where are you? I’ll come find you,” Xie Miaohan said.
Gu Huaiye had completely given up on Xie Miaohan. He closed his eyes and replied, “I’m at the hotel. I’ll send you the location now. Have a lawyer draft a divorce agreement. Come over once it’s done.”
Breathing suddenly became painful. Gu Huaiye didn’t want to be soft-hearted anymore, nor did he want to deceive himself any longer.
He clenched his fist, digging his fingernails into his palm, trying to use the pain to force himself to stay lucid.
“Xie Miaohan, I know you planned this. There’s no such thing as such a coincidence in this world. Wen Xuyue is your lover; his cooking the books definitely has something to do with you.”
He guessed that Wen Xuyue entering the police station was just temporary. Xie Miaohan loved Wen Xuyue so much, he would definitely hire a professional legal team to fish him out.
The two of them just wanted to bring down the Gu Group. Once the company’s stock completely crashed, that sum of money would appear, allowing Wen Xuyue to clear the evidence of his crime.
But even if the funds returned, it would be useless; it wouldn’t be able to bring the company back from the dead.
“Actually, you didn’t need to be this anxious. I know you were in a rush to get rid of me, so you were forced to make this risky move. But did you know? I had already planned to let you go. I just… hadn’t prepared myself yet.”
Gu Huaiye knew it was useless to say these things now.
He exhaled a breath.
“Xie Miaohan, let’s divorce.”
“You’re free.”
