Chapter 126: Gu Huaiye Is Really Dead
Xie Miaohan trailed the boy all the way to the cinema inside the shopping mall.
The boy stood in the lobby for a moment before suddenly looking up and smiling at something in the distance. Xie Miaohan’s heart skipped a beat. Immediately after, he watched the boy walk into a screening hall with another Alpha.
Xie Miaohan hurriedly followed, but before he could step inside, a staff member blocked his path.
“Where’s your ticket?”
Xie Miaohan fumbled to pull out his phone, staring at the ticketing screen in a panic. He was stuck.
“The two people who just went in—which movie did they book?”
The staff member frowned, hesitant to reveal customer information.
“Tell me, quickly,” Xie Miaohan demanded, his eyes fierce. “Which movie is it?”
Perhaps it was his intense gaze, or perhaps it was the hideous scars on his face, but the staff member stammered out the answer.
Xie Miaohan immediately placed an order, ran to the kiosk to print the ticket, and finally managed to enter the theater.
Once inside, his eyes frantically scanned for the boy’s face. There weren’t many people in the theater yet, so Xie Miaohan spotted him instantly. A joy he hadn’t felt in a long time surfaced on his face.
His seat was two rows behind the boy. Xie Miaohan clenched his fists as he walked over and sat down.
A few minutes later, the movie began, but his eyes remained fixed on the back of the boy’s head.
Is it Brother?
How can they look so alike?
Xie Miaohan curled his lips into a smile, his eyes revealing a trace of deep longing.
The two-hour movie ended all too quickly. As the lights in the theater brightened, Xie Miaohan saw the boy stand up, a look of lingering excitement on his face as he chatted with the Alpha beside him.
Seeing them about to leave, panic seized Xie Miaohan’s heart, and he quickly chased after them.
He followed the pair to a restaurant and chose a table directly opposite theirs.
Now that the distance was closed, Xie Miaohan finally saw the boy’s face clearly.
His heart instantly went cold, the joy on his face vanishing without a trace.
It wasn’t his brother.
They did look incredibly similar, but this boy was obviously much younger. There were no fine lines at the corners of his eyes, and his entire being radiated a youthful vitality.
He watched the boy take out several banknotes to tip the waiter serving their food.
Xie Miaohan became even more certain. This couldn’t be Gu Huaiye.
His brother would never spend money so recklessly.
Perhaps Xie Miaohan’s stare was too intense, for the boy finally looked up and locked eyes with him for two seconds.
The boy frowned, seemingly frightened by the scars on his face, and quickly looked away.
Xie Miaohan let out a self-deprecating laugh, slowly stood up, and left the restaurant.
Maybe it was a cruel twist of fate, but he left too early to hear what the boy’s companion said next.
“Gu Huaiye, don’t try to weasel out of this. You have to treat us for this meal.”
Xie Miaohan had just walked out of the restaurant when he ran into Jiang Zhuoqing, whom he hadn’t seen in a long time.
Jiang Zhuoqing was holding onto an Alpha’s arm, a smile still plastered on his face. The moment he saw Xie Miaohan, Jiang Zhuoqing froze, a flicker of surprise appearing in his eyes.
Xie Miaohan didn’t even look at him, stepping aside to walk around him.
“Wait.” Jiang Zhuoqing immediately blocked his path. “You… you aren’t Miaohan, are you?”
Xie Miaohan didn’t want to get entangled. He lowered his voice, speaking coldly, “You’ve got the wrong person.”
“It must be you!” Jiang Zhuoqing grabbed Xie Miaohan’s arm, his eyes fixed dead on the other man’s face. After seeing him clearly, he covered his mouth with his other hand and exclaimed, “Your face… how did it become…”
Xie Miaohan’s gaze turned icy as he forcefully yanked his hand back.
“None of your business.”
Caught off guard by the force, Jiang Zhuoqing lost his balance and fell to the ground.
The sudden embarrassment sent Jiang Zhuoqing into a rage.
“Xie Miaohan, do you think I still like you?” Jiang Zhuoqing scrambled up and shouted curses at him. “I only liked your face! Now you’re just an ugly freak. Your brother abandoned you, didn’t he? With a face that ugly, who would want you?”
Xie Miaohan’s footsteps paused for a second, but he said nothing and walked away.
After staying in District A for nearly half a year, Xie Miaohan returned to the army.
Unlike his previously cold persona, Xie Miaohan became enthusiastic and active, taking the initiative to help his comrades.
He always wore a smile, no longer giving off that gloomy, oppressive aura.
At first, everyone was uncomfortable with the change, but over time, they became willing to get close to him. Xie Miaohan became the most popular person in the unit.
The boy who had previously found Gu Huaiye’s photo couldn’t help but smile at Xie Miaohan. “Did you find your brother? Congratulations.”
He didn’t know if it was an illusion, but Xie Miaohan’s eyes seemed to darken for a moment before his smile returned.
“Didn’t you want me to teach you how to assemble guns quickly last time?”
The boy’s attention was diverted, and he nodded. “Yeah.”
“Come on, I’m free now.”
“Awesome.”
Late that night, the boy was woken up by the sound of suppressed sobbing. He sat up, rubbing his eyes, looking for the source of the sound.
Realizing it was coming from Xie Miaohan’s direction, the boy thought something was wrong. He immediately grabbed a flashlight, got out of bed, and went to check.
Xie Miaohan wasn’t awake. His eyes were tightly shut, his face streaked with tears. His lips were moving, seemingly murmuring something.
Curious, the boy leaned down to eavesdrop.
“Brother… I’m sorry… please come back… I won’t make you angry anymore…”
The boy sighed, turned off the flashlight, and went back to his own bed.
The next day, he saw that Xie Miaohan had regained his spirits, smiling and joking with the people around him.
It was as if the suppressed crying from the night before was just a dream the boy had.
But the boy hadn’t slept all night; he knew it wasn’t a dream.
Looking at Xie Miaohan’s bright yet sorrowful smile, he let out a heavy sigh. For the first time, he chose not to gossip about what he had seen.
Three years later.
Xie Miaohan performed exceptionally well in the military, and the Royal Family intended to groom him to be the next Commander.
But Xie Miaohan refused.
He felt it was meaningless. The person he wanted to care for wasn’t by his side. What was the use of being powerful or wealthy?
At night, he would stroke Gu Huaiye’s photo, his eyes filled with obsession and pain.
Suddenly remembering he hadn’t sent a message to Gu Huaiye in a long time, he sat up, took out his phone, and typed a paragraph.
[Brother, the higher-ups want to promote me to Commander. I refused, but I didn’t make it definitive. If Brother wants me to be the Commander, I’ll go and withdraw my decision.]
Xie Miaohan’s finger paused. He typed out “I miss you so much,” and just as he was about to send it, a reply actually came through.
[Who is this?]
Xie Miaohan’s breath hitched. Surprise flashed in his eyes, and he dialed the number with trembling fingers.
The ringtone rang for two seconds before miraculously connecting.
“Brother,” Xie Miaohan wept with joy, “I knew you were still ali—”
The person on the other end interrupted him. “What ‘Brother’? Who is this?”
It was a girl’s voice.
Xie Miaohan’s heart plummeted into an ice cellar. After a long while, he let out a short, hurried laugh.
“Sorry, I have the wrong number.”
The phone number hadn’t been used for too long and had been recycled back into the market.
Now, he had no choice but to believe it.
Gu Huaiye was really dead.
