Chapter 132: My Brother Is Dead
The year Gu Huaiye turned thirty-five, Father Gu’s health began to deteriorate rapidly, reaching the point where he required frequent IV drips.
Gu Huaiye reduced his workload, delegating less critical tasks to trusted subordinates so he could carve out time to accompany Father Gu.
One day after dinner, as usual, Gu Huaiye got up and went behind Father Gu to help him with his wheelchair.
“Dad, let’s go outside for a walk.”
“No rush.” Father Gu turned slightly and patted the back of Gu Huaiye’s hand. “Go sit over there. Let’s talk.”
Seeing his serious expression, Gu Huaiye assumed something had happened and immediately sat back in his seat.
“What is it?” Gu Huaiye asked. “Did the doctor say something again?”
“My health isn’t the issue. I’m worried about you.”
Gu Huaiye’s furrowed brows instantly relaxed, his expression becoming placid. “I’m fine. I eat properly every day and try not to stay up late.”
“Then why don’t you date? You’re already in your thirties. My health is fluctuating; at most, I have another ten years…”
Gu Huaiye hurriedly interrupted him. “Dad, don’t say things like that.”
“I’m speaking the truth; we can’t avoid this issue forever.” Father Gu paused and sighed. “I want to be with you longer too, but sooner or later, the day will come when I have to leave. I don’t want you to have no one by your side when that happens. If you really don’t like Omegas, then a Beta… or even an Alpha is fine.”
Gu Huaiye shook his head. “I won’t marry again. Dad, if you’re worried about no one inheriting the company, I’ll go to the orphanage tomorrow and adopt a child to groom as the heir to the Gu Group.”
“Is that what I’m worried about? It doesn’t matter what happens to the company; I only care about you.” Father Gu felt both angry and heartbroken. “Are you still unable to forget that person? It’s been over ten years. Are you going to live in this daze forever? How am I supposed to face your mother after I die?”
Gu Huaiye hung his head, saying nothing.
Father Gu seemed to realize something, his eyes narrowing. “You aren’t planning to stop living after I’m gone, are you?”
Worried that the shock would be too much for Father Gu, Gu Huaiye chose to lie. “I just won’t get married, that’s all. I haven’t thought about suicide. I will live on properly.”
Father Gu’s expression softened slightly.
“That’s good then. You must never have such thoughts.” Father Gu seemed a bit tired and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Let’s skip the walk today. I’m a little sleepy.”
Gu Huaiye stood up immediately. “I’ll help you up.”
“No need.” Father Gu paused, then said, “Think it over carefully. You can’t just rely on suppressants to get through your life.”
Once Father Gu had left, Gu Huaiye touched the back of his neck.
After losing Xie Miaohan, Gu Huaiye discovered that the pain of the Rut was nothing in comparison.
What had he been thinking back then? How could he have taken Xie Miaohan for dangerous surgery just for this?
And how could he have abandoned him time and time again?
He had truly been so terrible to Xie Miaohan.
No wonder Xie Miaohan preferred death over wanting him.
Two days later, Gu Huaiye was in a meeting with senior executives at the company.
Suddenly, his assistant walked into the conference room, came to his side, and leaned down to whisper, “The youngest son of the Chen family is here to see you.”
“Chen Xialin?”
The assistant nodded.
Gu Huaiye was surprised. They hadn’t really been in contact since that phone call.
He had heard two years ago that Chen Xialin went to District B for his Ph.D., and perhaps due to being busy, he hadn’t returned to District A.
“Take him to my office to sit for a while.”
“Yes, President Gu.”
About five minutes later, the assistant came back in.
He looked troubled. “President Gu, he keeps crying. It seems something very serious has happened.”
Gu Huaiye’s eyes darkened instantly. Ignoring the meeting, he quickly got up and went to his office.
Opening the door, he saw a pale-faced Chen Xialin with eyes swollen from crying.
“What happened…”
Before Gu Huaiye could finish, Chen Xialin rushed over and hugged him.
“My brother… my brother is dead…” Chen Xialin cried breathlessly. “He was killed by my dad’s illegitimate son.”
Gu Huaiye felt the blood in his entire body freeze instantly, as if someone had forcibly pressed the pause button.
He saw Chen Xialin’s mouth moving, but he couldn’t hear a thing.
How could Chen Zirui be dead?
It had to be a lie.
He remembered seeing Chen Zirui’s WeChat post just last week, celebrating his promotion.
He had even commented on it, and Chen Zirui had immediately messaged him back, bragging that he would soon become a CEO just like him.
Everything was clearly getting better; how could he suddenly be dead?
Gu Huaiye shook his head violently. When the ringing in his ears subsided, he gripped Chen Xialin’s shoulders, his face grim.
“What exactly happened?”
Incoherently, Chen Xialin explained the events of the past ten years.
It took Gu Huaiye a long time to piece together the sequence of events.
Just like in his previous life, not long after Chen Zirui graduated, Father Chen couldn’t wait to bring his illegitimate son back home.
He wanted to pressure Chen Zirui to become ambitious while also testing the illegitimate son’s capabilities.
The illegitimate son was very good at sweet-talking Father Chen and often framed Chen Zirui in front of him.
Chen Zirui’s personality was too straightforward. Even when wronged, he wouldn’t explain; he would only run away from home.
Later, Chen Zirui realized that going on like this wasn’t an option; sooner or later, both brothers would be kicked out of the Chen family.
So, he pulled himself together and went to the Chen Group to do entry-level work. His position was lower than the illegitimate son’s, and he suffered all kinds of difficulties from him at the company.
He endured for over a decade and finally made Father Chen see his hard work, earning a promotion to department general manager.
Seeing the situation turn unfavorable, the illegitimate son developed murderous intent toward Chen Zirui.
Last night, driving home drunk, he saw Chen Zirui. Without a second thought, he slammed on the gas and crashed into him.
Knocking him down wasn’t enough to satisfy his hatred; he even drove the car back and forth over him, crushing him repeatedly.
When the police arrived after receiving the report, Chen Zirui’s skull was already shattered, his face unrecognizable.
An Omega police officer was so frightened by the gruesome sight that they turned away and vomited.
“How could he be so cruel… how much pain must my brother have felt…” Chen Xialin cried as he spoke. “I could have helped my brother. I finally met the Vice Commander in District B, and he promised to take me and my brother to settle in District B. Why did it have to end like this…”
Chen Xialin cried uncontrollably, triggering respiratory alkalosis, causing his limbs to go stiff.
Gu Huaiye quickly picked him up and, together with his assistant, rushed Chen Xialin to the hospital.
A week later, Gu Huaiye attended Chen Zirui’s funeral.
It had been a sunny day, but as soon as the funeral began, the sky filled with dark clouds, as if weeping over the injustice of fate.
Gu Huaiye stood beside Chen Zirui’s body, his eyes staring gloomily at Father Chen.
Guilty, Father Chen looked away, daring not to meet his gaze.
When the funeral ended, Gu Huaiye approached Father Chen.
“If you weren’t his father, I would ruin you regardless of the consequences.”
Leaving those words behind, Gu Huaiye prepared to leave.
Chen Xialin chased after him and stuffed a bank card into his hand.
“This is?” Gu Huaiye asked in confusion.
“Brother’s saved-up deposit.” Chen Xialin wiped a tear from the corner of his eye. “My dad always suppressed him, so his salary was really low. He couldn’t bear to spend it and saved it all.”
“Why give it to me?”
“Brother told me before that he wanted to earn a lot of money to take you on a trip around the world. So, I think this money belongs to you.” Chen Xialin choked back a sob. “He hoped you wouldn’t be unhappy and wouldn’t punish yourself with work. He felt very sad every time he saw that.”
