Chapter 156: Out of Danger

Gu Huaiye walked out of the exam hall, a relaxed smile hovering on his face.

He took his backpack out of the locker and prepared to turn on his phone to ask Lu Zishi to pick him up.

Just as he unzipped his bag, he saw Chen Zirui running toward him, looking frantic.

Seeing him running so recklessly, Gu Huaiye was afraid he might fall, so he shouted, “Slow down! The ground is slippery, don’t fall!”

Chen Zirui reached Gu Huaiye, gasping for air, so exhausted he couldn’t straighten his back.

“Brother… Brother Gu… something… something happened…”

Chen Zirui’s speech was broken and disjointed. Gu Huaiye couldn’t make out what he was saying, so he patted his back to help him catch his breath.

“Brother Gu, go to the hospital quickly!” Chen Zirui finally managed to speak. “Uncle couldn’t reach you, so he called me and told me to come find you. Xie Miaohan took a massive dose of psychiatric medication. He’s in a coma and has been sent to the hospital for emergency resuscitation.”

The backpack in Gu Huaiye’s hand dropped to the ground. The color drained visibly from his face; his lips parted slightly, but no sound came out.

How could this happen?

Xie Miaohan looked perfectly fine before he left the house.

He had even told Xie Miaohan to think about where they should travel for winter break.

Wasn’t everything supposed to be getting better? Why would he choose to swallow pills and commit suicide?

Gu Huaiye didn’t have time to think. He turned and ran toward the school gate.

Chen Zirui hurriedly picked up Gu Huaiye’s bag and chased after him.

“Brother Gu, I drove here. I’ll take you!”

Chen Zirui didn’t dare let Gu Huaiye go to the hospital alone, fearing he might get into an accident in his panicked state.

On the way to the hospital, Gu Huaiye’s body couldn’t stop trembling as he stared blankly ahead.

“Brother Gu, don’t worry. I heard Uncle say the servants found him in time. Xie Miaohan was sent to the hospital not long after swallowing the pills. He’ll definitely be okay.”

Gu Huaiye didn’t speak, and it was unclear if he even heard the words.

Chen Zirui sighed silently and said nothing more.

If he hadn’t experienced this today, he wouldn’t have known Xie Miaohan was this sick.

He hoped the man was alright.

He was genuinely afraid that if something happened to Xie Miaohan, his brother wouldn’t want to live either.

Rushing to the door of the emergency room, Gu Huaiye saw Father Gu. He dashed over and grabbed his father’s arm as if clutching at a straw to save his life.

“How is he?”

Father Gu sighed and shook his head.

The situation wasn’t looking good. He had just signed a notice of critical condition.

But he didn’t dare tell Gu Huaiye, afraid the boy wouldn’t be able to handle it.

Gu Huaiye lost all strength and crouched down helplessly.

“Brother Gu, don’t be scared. He’ll definitely be fine.”

Chen Zirui stepped forward to support him, helping him sit on a bench.

Gu Huaiye didn’t respond, staring unblinkingly at the emergency room doors.

He hoped the tightly closed doors would open soon, yet he was terrified of them opening.

He was afraid of hearing bad news.

They had already survived so many lifetimes; he had to get better.

Two hours later, the emergency room doors finally opened.

Gu Huaiye shot up abruptly, his body swaying from the sudden movement.

Chen Zirui quickly supported him. “Brother Gu, are you okay?”

Gu Huaiye shook his head, pulled his arm free, and went up to the doctor.

“How… how is he?” Gu Huaiye’s voice trembled violently.

“He is out of danger.”

Gu Huaiye finally relaxed and broke down in tears.

Thank goodness!

His Miaomiao made it through.

Moments later, Xie Miaohan, still unconscious, was wheeled out by several nurses.

Gu Huaiye hurriedly walked to the bedside, keeping pace with the nurses.

He looked down at Xie Miaohan’s pale face and whispered, “I’m sorry.”

He was so useless.

He always failed to take good care of Miaomiao.

Gu Huaiye refused to eat or drink. No amount of persuasion worked; he stayed by Xie Miaohan’s bedside, never leaving his side.

By the evening of the second day, Xie Miaohan finally showed signs of waking up. His fingers, resting on the bed, twitched twice.

Gu Huaiye noticed immediately and grasped Xie Miaohan’s hand.

When Xie Miaohan opened his eyes, the tears that had pooled in Gu Huaiye’s eyes fell.

“You finally… woke up…”

Xie Miaohan stared at Gu Huaiye’s face for a long time before struggling to reach out and wipe the tears from his face.

“Don’t… don’t cry…” Xie Miaohan’s voice was extremely hoarse. “I’m sorry… did I make you unhappy?”

Gu Huaiye bit his lip and said sorrowfully, “Why did you take pills to kill yourself? When did you start hoarding medicine?”

He paused, his voice choking with sobs. “Do you want to leave me that badly?”

No matter what he did, he couldn’t seem to keep Xie Miaohan.

“I wasn’t trying to commit suicide…” Xie Miaohan’s body hadn’t fully recovered, so he spoke very slowly. “I wanted to get better faster. I didn’t want to stay in the mental hospital anymore. I didn’t want to sleep all the time after taking the medicine, and I didn’t want to be separated from you for so long. Huaiye, I really am better. I won’t hurt myself anymore. Please take me home. Don’t send me there again.”

“Why do you think you were in a mental hospital?” Gu Huaiye asked in confusion. “I never sent you to one.”

Xie Miaohan looked away, avoiding Gu Huaiye’s gaze.

“Huaiye, stop lying to me.” Xie Miaohan said sadly, “Someone was watching my every move. Every time I finished eating, someone would urge me to take medicine. Were you afraid I would hurt you, so you sent me there?”

Gu Huaiye immediately realized what had happened. He leaned down and hugged Xie Miaohan.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have let people monitor you. That wasn’t a mental hospital—how could I ever send you to a place like that? That was just my parents’ house.” Gu Huaiye cried as he spoke. “Were you suffering a lot during this time? I should have noticed sooner. I actually let them watch you like that.”

Hearing this, Xie Miaohan realized he had misunderstood Gu Huaiye.

His eyelashes trembled slightly as he hugged Gu Huaiye back.

“I shouldn’t have doubted you. I’m sorry.” Xie Miaohan paused, then spoke cautiously, “Huaiye, I really don’t want to be apart from you anymore, and I don’t want to take those pills. I really want to sleep with you every night and see you the moment I open my eyes every day. Is that okay?”

Afraid Gu Huaiye would refuse, his tone carried a clear plea.

“I really won’t commit suicide again. Huaiye, if I do something like this again, just throw me into a mental hospital. I won’t complain.”

Gu Huaiye choked back a sob. “I won’t send you to that kind of place. Miaomiao, after you’re discharged, let’s go back to our original little home. We haven’t been there in a long time.”

“Really?”

“Mn.” Gu Huaiye nodded heavily.

After soothing Xie Miaohan to sleep, Gu Huaiye returned to the villa and went to the monitoring room to pull up past footage.

Knowing he was invading Xie Miaohan’s privacy, he had never dared to watch these recordings before.

With red-rimmed eyes, he watched the screen showing Xie Miaohan lying on the bed, hugging Gu Huaiye’s clothes to fall asleep. His heart felt like it was being torn apart.

The next morning, Gu Huaiye arrived at the hospital ward.

Xie Miaohan had just woken up and watched as Gu Huaiye placed a rubber band around his wrist.

“What is this?”

Gu Huaiye looked up at Xie Miaohan. “From now on, if you feel things aren’t real, snap it.”

It might not be the best method, but as long as it stopped Xie Miaohan from harming himself, it would do.

“It doesn’t matter if you don’t get better, Miaomiao. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself,” Gu Huaiye said. “Whether you recover or not, I will never leave you.”
