You Claimed You Didn’t Love Me, So Why Cry Now That I’m Engaged? Chapter 87

Chapter 87: Do You Want to Go on a Date?

Gu Huaiye called Xie Miaohan more than ten times in a row.

Every single one was a missed call.

He looked at the subordinate Xie Miaohan had arranged to handle security at the villa and asked with a worried expression, “Has something happened to Xie Miaohan? Why does he refuse to answer my calls?”

It was the last day of their agreement. He had thought Xie Miaohan would come to see him off, but the only ones who arrived were the driver to take him to District A and the servants to help him pack.

“I’m sorry, I’m not a soldier on the front lines. I don’t know about these things.”

“Does Xie Miaohan only have this one phone number?” Gu Huaiye continued to ask. “When was the last time you contacted him?”

“Half a month ago.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me to protect your safety,” the man said. “That’s all he instructed.”

Knowing he wouldn’t get anything out of him, Gu Huaiye turned to look at the driver and the servants.

They also shook their heads with bewildered expressions.

“Commander Xie arranged for us a month ago, telling us to come at this time to take you back to District A.”

Because of their conversation that day, Xie Miaohan had decided to arrange his departure a month in advance?

But why not answer the phone?

Gu Huaiye felt increasingly uneasy. After some thought, he called Chen Zirui.

“Is Xiang Wanxing next to you right now?” Gu Huaiye asked directly. “I have something to ask him.”

“Ah? No, he hasn’t come back since he went out yesterday.”

Gu Huaiye frowned. “Then can you send me his phone number?”

“Sure, I’ll read it to you now.”

Gu Huaiye noted down Xiang Wanxing’s number. After hanging up with Chen Zirui, he immediately called Xiang Wanxing.

It took two tries before the call connected.

“Who is this?” Xiang Wanxing’s tone was somewhat cold.

Gu Huaiye hurriedly said, “It’s Gu Huaiye. I wanted to ask if you know where Xie Miaohan went. He’s been missing for a month, and I can’t reach him at all.”

Xiang Wanxing paused. “So you haven’t contacted each other for a month.”

“Mhm, so I’m very worried about him.”

“Actually, he…” Xiang Wanxing seemed to be interrupted by something. He paused for a long while before saying, “He’s busy with something right now. He’ll call you later.”

“Really? As long as he’s okay.” The heart Gu Huaiye had been holding in suspense finally settled. He curved his lips and said, “Sorry to disturb you.”

“Not at all. I’m hanging up then.”

“Okay.”

In the District B Central Hospital.

After hanging up the phone, Xiang Wanxing looked with a puzzled expression at the man lying on the hospital bed, his entire body wrapped in bandages.

“Why not tell him the truth?”

A week ago, Xie Miaohan had been passive on the battlefield. After taking just one shot to the abdomen, he had simply lain there waiting to die.

This resulted in him being caught in the blast of a grenade thrown by the enemy, leaving almost no good flesh on his body.

If the Vice Commander hadn’t risked his life to carry the dying man back, Xie Miaohan would already be in an urn by now.

Xiang Wanxing truly couldn’t understand.

A year ago, Xie Miaohan’s desire to live was stronger than anyone’s. Several times he had brushed past death, almost unable to survive, yet he had managed to crawl out from a pile of corpses through sheer willpower.

In just one year, it was as if he had become a withered, rotting flower, his vitality draining away bit by bit.

“You even asked me to contact someone for skin graft surgery before.” Xiang Wanxing laughed, his eyes full of anger as he pointed at Xie Miaohan’s bandage-wrapped arm. “Look at this ghostly state of yours. You can’t even undergo surgery anymore.”

Xie Miaohan closed his eyes wearily. “There’s no need. A monster is a monster; no amount of surgery can cover up the ugliness.”

“You…” Xiang Wanxing took a deep breath, deciding not to argue with a madman. “Rest well. I can’t be bothered to talk to you either.”

After Xie Miaohan was carried into this hospital, they resuscitated him for two days and two nights. Critical condition notices were issued several times; he almost didn’t make it.

He had no family, no one to rely on. It was Xiang Wanxing who personally came to sign the papers.

Last night, Xie Miaohan was sent into the emergency room again. Xiang Wanxing rushed over and had stayed with him until now.

He thought Xie Miaohan would remain in a coma, but unexpectedly, one phone call from Gu Huaiye and Xie Miaohan suddenly woke up, grabbing his arm and forbidding him from telling the truth.

“I’m leaving. I didn’t go back all night; Shorty must be feeling aggrieved again.”

Father Xiang wasn’t satisfied with Chen Zirui coming from District A and always looked for opportunities to make things difficult for him.

Chen Zirui wasn’t a pushover either; his temper was explosive. A few days ago, he almost blurted out “damned old geezer.” Fortunately, Father Xiang hadn’t heard clearly.

With Xiang Wanxing there, Father Xiang would restrain himself a little.

Buy a bouquet of flowers on the way back and hide some money inside. Chen Zirui should like that.

Xiang Wanxing picked up his phone, preparing to leave the ward, when Xie Miaohan suddenly called out to him.

“Please call Gu Huaiye for me. I want to talk to him for a bit. He’s probably very worried about me; he likely won’t leave without my call.”

Xiang Wanxing raised an eyebrow. “You’re in pain all over like this, and you still want to coax him?”

Xie Miaohan pursed his lips, emphasizing his tone, “Please.”

Xiang Wanxing sighed. He was truly defeated by this lunatic. He took out his phone, redialed the number from before, and placed the phone by Xie Miaohan’s ear.

“Huaiye, it’s me.”

Xie Miaohan’s voice was extremely hoarse. His throat itched terribly, and he couldn’t help but cough. But this slight movement made his face turn even paler from pain.

“I lost my phone, so I can only call you from Xiang Wanxing’s phone.” Xie Miaohan paused, then continued, “You don’t need to worry about me. I’m fine. I’m just busy, so I can’t see you off.”

Not knowing what Gu Huaiye said, Xie Miaohan lowered his eyes, his expression looking somewhat desolate.

He said, “Wait for me for a week. When I’m done, I’ll go see you off. Is that okay?”

“Okay, see you in a week.”

After hanging up, Xiang Wanxing couldn’t help but mock him.

“In this ghostly state, I doubt you’ll be able to get out of bed in a week.”

Xie Miaohan looked up at Xiang Wanxing. “I thought you would leave me to die. You arranged that Vice Commander, didn’t you?”

“I’m not cold-blooded. You’ve helped me so much; how could I leave you to die?” Xiang Wanxing thought of something and frowned. “But if you continue being so eager to commit suicide, I really won’t care anymore. The replacement is already trained anyway; they can take your position anytime.”

Xie Miaohan was silent for a moment, then said, “Thank you.”

For giving him the chance to see Gu Huaiye one last time.

A week later, Gu Huaiye saw Xie Miaohan at the villa.

It was only October, and the weather wasn’t cold, yet Xie Miaohan was wearing a trench coat over a high-necked sweater, wrapping himself up tightly.

Gu Huaiye was about to ask if he was sick—why he was dressed so warmly, and why his face seemed a bit pale.

Xie Miaohan suddenly smiled at him.

“Huaiye, do you want to go on a date today?”
