Chapter 94: With You, I Won’t Go Hungry
“Is the schoolbag heavy? Why didn’t you leave it at the hotel? It must be uncomfortable carrying it around.” Gu Huaiye reached out to grab the shoulder straps of the bag. “Let me carry it for you.”
Xie Miaohan gripped the straps tightly with both hands, refusing to let Gu Huaiye take it off.
Gu Huaiye let go and asked, “Don’t tell me your bracelet is inside?”
Xie Miaohan’s expression shifted slightly. He didn’t answer, but Gu Huaiye had pretty much guessed the truth.
He was so nervous about the bag; he must have hidden the bracelet inside.
It was actually a little disheartening.
Gu Huaiye thought that after feeding him for so long, he might have earned the boy’s trust.
“Alright, alright, I won’t carry it.”
Gu Huaiye sighed and shoved his hands into his pockets.
Xie Miaohan observed Gu Huaiye quietly. After hesitating for a long time, he reached out and tugged on Gu Huaiye’s sleeve.
“What’s wrong?” Gu Huaiye looked at him with curiosity.
“I’m a child; you have to hold my hand.”
Gu Huaiye was almost amused by Xie Miaohan’s logic.
“Okay, okay, I’ll hold your hand now.”
Back at the hotel, Gu Huaiye stared at the small schoolbag.
“Did you bring any clothes?”
Xie Miaohan nodded and pulled a set of clothes out of the bag.
Gu Huaiye felt faint when he saw them.
What kind of rags were these?
If he had known, he would have bought clothes for Xie Miaohan first.
“Is that all you have?”
Xie Miaohan pulled out another set; the top had a massive hole in it.
“These are leftovers from my cousin,” Xie Miaohan said. “That’s all there is.”
Gu Huaiye pinched the bridge of his nose. “Forget it. Go take a shower first. I’ll take you to the market tomorrow to pick out a few outfits.”
Xie Miaohan seemed happy. He wanted to smile, but fearing it might be annoying, he desperately suppressed the corners of his mouth.
“No need, these are fine to wear.”
Gu Huaiye was afraid he would feel like a burden, so after thinking for a moment, he said, “You don’t need to be afraid of spending money. Just pay me back when you grow up and make money.”
Xie Miaohan nodded vigorously.
“I will be filial to you when I grow up.”
Gu Huaiye: “……”
Why did that sound a bit strange?
Xie Miaohan went into the bathroom to shower, not forgetting to take his schoolbag with him.
Gu Huaiye glanced at him but didn’t say anything.
Two days later, Gu Huaiye took Xie Miaohan to catch a train.
He bought two hard sleeper tickets, intending for them to have one bed each.
But Xie Miaohan, terrified that Gu Huaiye would leave him behind, insisted on squeezing into the same bunk.
No matter how Gu Huaiye tried to persuade him, it didn’t work, so he just gave up.
Staying together wasn’t a bad idea; it would prevent human traffickers from snatching Xie Miaohan away.
“Brother.”
“Hmm?”
Xie Miaohan hugged his schoolbag tight, a trace of unease and nervousness appearing on his small face.
“You won’t leave me behind, right?”
Gu Huaiye had been resting with his eyes closed. Hearing this, he opened his eyes and looked at Xie Miaohan.
“I won’t.” Gu Huaiye rubbed the boy’s head. “If I wanted to leave you behind, I wouldn’t have taken you away with me. Do you know how much a train ticket costs? It’s enough to stay in a hotel for several days.”
Xie Miaohan lowered his eyes. “I’m sorry, I always make you spend money.”
Gu Huaiye: “……” He said the wrong thing again.
“Oh, don’t overthink it,” Gu Huaiye said with a smile. “Anyway, I won’t leave you. Just sleep peacefully. I’ll wake you up when we arrive.”
Xie Miaohan murmured an acknowledgment.
He closed his eyes, but not long after, he opened them again, looking nervously at Gu Huaiye.
“Will you sell me?”
Gu Huaiye nearly coughed up blood.
Did he really look that much like a villain?
Gu Huaiye lightly pinched Xie Miaohan’s cheek. “If you’re afraid I’m a bad guy, why did you dare to come with me?”
“With you, I won’t go hungry.”
Gu Huaiye fell silent.
A very realistic answer.
He thought Xie Miaohan was moved by his heroic rescue.
Or that he thought Gu Huaiye was a particularly good person and trusted him unconditionally.
Turns out, it was just to get a full meal.
Whatever. A child’s wishes at this age are relatively simple.
He wouldn’t hold it against him! He wouldn’t!
Suddenly feeling playful, Gu Huaiye turned on his side and looked at Xie Miaohan with a serious expression.
“Then what if I really sold you? What would you do?”
Xie Miaohan’s face turned pale, and he couldn’t help hugging the schoolbag against his chest tighter.
“Where are you going to sell me?”
To someone even worse than his uncle?
Sure enough, no one was willing to raise him forever.
Xie Miaohan regretted eating so much, and he regretted picking out those nice clothes yesterday.
“Who do you want me to sell you to?” Gu Huaiye continued to tease him.
Xie Miaohan bit his lip, his eyelashes trembling slightly.
After a long while, he spoke with a sobbing tone, “I won’t go to school anymore. I’ll just eat your leftovers. I’m very good at housework. If you’re unhappy, you can hit me anytime. Just please don’t sell me to anyone else, okay?”
Gu Huaiye froze.
Seeing Xie Miaohan’s eyes turning red, Gu Huaiye wanted to slap himself.
Why did he have to tease a child like that?
He really had a loose tongue.
“Don’t cry, don’t cry. I was just joking with you.” Gu Huaiye patted his back, coaxing him softly, “I won’t sell you. Really, I’m not lying to you.”
Xie Miaohan sniffled and held out his pinky finger toward Gu Huaiye.
“Pinky swear. No lying allowed.”
Gu Huaiye found his behavior adorable. He couldn’t help but smile as he extended his own pinky to hook it with Xie Miaohan’s.
“But wouldn’t you want to live with rich people?” Gu Huaiye asked curiously. “What if I sold you to a wealthy family? You’d have lots of new clothes and beautiful toys.”
Xie Miaohan shook his head and actively hugged Gu Huaiye.
“I just want to be with Brother.”
Gu Huaiye was touched by his words.
It was worth raising him after all.
District H was quite far from District A; the train ride took a full day and night.
Gu Huaiye squatted down to put Xie Miaohan’s shoes on for him.
“Stay close to me later. The train station is crowded, and it’ll be trouble if you get lost.”
“I know, Brother.”
After getting off the train, Gu Huaiye held Xie Miaohan’s hand tightly.
They had only walked a few steps when someone suddenly bumped into them. Without even apologizing to Gu Huaiye, the person turned and walked away.
Gu Huaiye ignored it and pulled Xie Miaohan forward.
But at that moment, Xie Miaohan wrenched his hand free and ran back.
“Miaomiao! Where are you going!”
Startled, Gu Huaiye quickly pushed through the crowd and chased after him.
After searching for a long time, he finally found Xie Miaohan near the restrooms.
Xie Miaohan had a fierce look in his eyes. He was holding a small knife, brandishing it at a teenager who was older than him.
“Give my brother’s wallet back!”
Gu Huaiye quickly checked his pocket. The wallet was indeed gone.
The teenager, who had already been backed into a corner by Xie Miaohan, saw Gu Huaiye arrive and immediately lost his nerve.
He threw the wallet on the ground and, while Xie Miaohan bent down to pick it up, quickly slipped away.
