Gu Huaiye rushed to the school. The buildings inside were pitch black; only the light from the security guard’s booth at the gate was on.
He looked around but couldn’t see Xie Miaohan anywhere. Anxiety surged in his heart.
How could he not be here?
He couldn’t have been kidnapped, right?
But this was District A. It shouldn’t be that chaotic.
Gu Huaiye ran to the security booth and knocked on the window.
The guard slid the window open and looked him up and down with confusion. “What’s the matter?”
“Have all the students left?” Gu Huaiye gestured with his hand to indicate a height. “Have you seen a boy about this tall? Very beautiful, with fair, clean skin.”
The guard pointed to the clock behind him. “It’s almost eight o’clock. What kind of parent are you, coming only now?”
Gu Huaiye quickly bowed, apologizing sincerely.
“Go home and look. Everyone was gone by a little past six. If he’s not at home either, you’d better call the police.”
After thanking him, Gu Huaiye turned and sprinted toward home.

To save on rent, they had rented an apartment on the seventh floor. By the time Gu Huaiye ran up the stairs, he was on the verge of collapse.
Panting heavily, he took the key out of his pocket with trembling hands.
The hallway light was broken, and he couldn’t see the keyhole clearly, which made him want to curse in frustration.
Just then, the door suddenly opened.
Xie Miaohan stood on his tiptoes to open the door. When he saw Gu Huaiye’s face, his eyes lit up with joy.
“Brother, you’re back!”

Xie Miaohan brought over a pair of slippers and squatted down, wanting to help Gu Huaiye change his shoes.
Gu Huaiye felt uncomfortable letting such a small child serve him, so he quickly moved his feet and changed them himself.
“It means looking for a job. I have a job now, so I can pay your tuition very soon.”

“Did you cook?”

“Brother, I’m sorry. I’ll go do my homework in a bit.”
“Mn, that’s the right attitude.” Gu Huaiye rubbed his head. “Come on, let’s eat.”
“Okay.”
That night, Xie Miaohan tried to use the excuse of having nightmares to sleep in Gu Huaiye’s room again.
But this time, Gu Huaiye refused him.
“Brother, but I’m scared.”
Xie Miaohan gazed at Gu Huaiye with teary eyes.
Gu Huaiye looked away, avoiding Xie Miaohan’s eyes.
“No, you have to learn to sleep by yourself.” Gu Huaiye said earnestly, “You’re a big boy now. If you still need someone to lull you to sleep, your classmates will laugh at you if they find out.”
He didn’t want Xie Miaohan to become too dependent on him.

“I’m not afraid of being laughed at.” Xie Miaohan hugged his pillow and tried to squeeze past him, looking for a chance to slip inside.
Gu Huaiye guessed his intention and blocked his head with his hand.

Over time, Xie Miaohan stopped waiting for Gu Huaiye and chose to go back by himself.
One evening, Gu Huaiye was translating documents sent by his superior, so busy he was feeling a bit overwhelmed.
Xie Miaohan held a test paper behind his back and approached Gu Huaiye’s room with a face full of anticipation.
“Brother.”

“Brother.”

The phone on the desk suddenly rang. Gu Huaiye quickly picked it up, stood up, turned his back to Xie Miaohan, and answered the call.
“Mr. Chen, please give me another ten minutes. I’ll finish it and send it to you right away.”
Xie Miaohan gripped the test paper tightly and turned to leave.
Back in his room, he crumpled the test paper into a ball and threw it into the trash can, staring coldly at the wad of paper.
“You’re really useless.”
“You can’t even please Brother.”
