You Claimed You Didn’t Love Me, So Why Cry Now That I’m Engaged? Chapter 97

Chapter 97: Can’t Even Please Brother

Gu Huaiye rushed to the school. The buildings inside were pitch black; only the light from the security guard’s booth at the gate was on.

He looked around but couldn’t see Xie Miaohan anywhere. Anxiety surged in his heart.

How could he not be here?

He couldn’t have been kidnapped, right?

But this was District A. It shouldn’t be that chaotic.

Gu Huaiye ran to the security booth and knocked on the window.

The guard slid the window open and looked him up and down with confusion. “What’s the matter?”

“Have all the students left?” Gu Huaiye gestured with his hand to indicate a height. “Have you seen a boy about this tall? Very beautiful, with fair, clean skin.”

The guard pointed to the clock behind him. “It’s almost eight o’clock. What kind of parent are you, coming only now?”

Gu Huaiye quickly bowed, apologizing sincerely.

“Go home and look. Everyone was gone by a little past six. If he’s not at home either, you’d better call the police.”

After thanking him, Gu Huaiye turned and sprinted toward home.

Please be at home.

To save on rent, they had rented an apartment on the seventh floor. By the time Gu Huaiye ran up the stairs, he was on the verge of collapse.

Panting heavily, he took the key out of his pocket with trembling hands.

The hallway light was broken, and he couldn’t see the keyhole clearly, which made him want to curse in frustration.

Just then, the door suddenly opened.

Xie Miaohan stood on his tiptoes to open the door. When he saw Gu Huaiye’s face, his eyes lit up with joy.

“Brother, you’re back!”

Gu Huaiye froze, staring at him blankly.

“Brother, you came back so late.” Xie Miaohan walked over, hugged Gu Huaiye, and looked up at him. “I was afraid you were busy with something, so I came back by myself.”

Actually, that wasn’t true.

He had waited at the school gate until past six. The students had all left, leaving him alone.

Gu Huaiye had nothing to be busy with. If he hadn’t come to pick him up by then, it probably meant he really didn’t want him anymore.

Xie Miaohan didn’t want to keep waiting.

He knew where their home was.

So it didn’t matter.

If Gu Huaiye didn’t want him, he would walk back himself and pester his brother to keep taking him in.

After returning home, Xie Miaohan didn’t dare rest for a moment.

He cleaned the entire apartment, and even took some ingredients from the fridge to cook a pot of noodles.

“It’s good that you could come back on your own.” Gu Huaiye let out a sigh of relief. He walked inside, dropped his briefcase on the sofa, and collapsed onto it. “I had an interview today, so I didn’t make it in time to pick you up. Miaomiao, I’m sorry.”

“What is an interview?”

Xie Miaohan brought over a pair of slippers and squatted down, wanting to help Gu Huaiye change his shoes.

Gu Huaiye felt uncomfortable letting such a small child serve him, so he quickly moved his feet and changed them himself.

“It means looking for a job. I have a job now, so I can pay your tuition very soon.”

“Brother is amazing.”

Gu Huaiye smiled, then suddenly smelled a delicious aroma.

“Did you cook?”

Xie Miaohan nodded, putting on an expression that begged for praise, his eyes shining as he looked at Gu Huaiye.

“I made tomato and egg noodles. It’s ready to eat. Brother, go wash your hands.”

Gu Huaiye frowned, his expression disapproving. “Don’t do these things in the future. Your task is to study. I brought you here not to be a servant.”

The smile on Xie Miaohan’s face vanished. He carefully took Gu Huaiye’s hand.

“Brother, I’m sorry. I’ll go do my homework in a bit.”

“Mn, that’s the right attitude.” Gu Huaiye rubbed his head. “Come on, let’s eat.”

“Okay.”

That night, Xie Miaohan tried to use the excuse of having nightmares to sleep in Gu Huaiye’s room again.

But this time, Gu Huaiye refused him.

“Brother, but I’m scared.”

Xie Miaohan gazed at Gu Huaiye with teary eyes.

Gu Huaiye looked away, avoiding Xie Miaohan’s eyes.

“No, you have to learn to sleep by yourself.” Gu Huaiye said earnestly, “You’re a big boy now. If you still need someone to lull you to sleep, your classmates will laugh at you if they find out.”

He didn’t want Xie Miaohan to become too dependent on him.

It really wasn’t good for him.

“I’m not afraid of being laughed at.” Xie Miaohan hugged his pillow and tried to squeeze past him, looking for a chance to slip inside.

Gu Huaiye guessed his intention and blocked his head with his hand.

“Be obedient. If you’re not good, I will…” Gu Huaiye thought for a moment and said, “If you’re not good, I won’t let you eat tomorrow.”

Hearing this, Xie Miaohan continued to try and burrow in.

Gu Huaiye: “……”

Sure enough, he had been too well-fed lately; this threat didn’t work on him anymore.

“If you don’t listen, I won’t talk to you anymore.”

Xie Miaohan’s body stiffened. After a long while, he took a step back.

“I’ll go back to my room to sleep,” Xie Miaohan said in a muffled voice. “I’m sorry, Brother.”

Gu Huaiye nodded slightly. “No staying up late. If you can’t get up tomorrow, I won’t help you.”

Xie Miaohan nodded and turned to go back to his room.

Lying in bed, Gu Huaiye sighed helplessly.

Raising a child was truly not easy.

After getting a job, Gu Huaiye became very busy and often couldn’t make it in time to pick Xie Miaohan up from school.

Over time, Xie Miaohan stopped waiting for Gu Huaiye and chose to go back by himself.

One evening, Gu Huaiye was translating documents sent by his superior, so busy he was feeling a bit overwhelmed.

Xie Miaohan held a test paper behind his back and approached Gu Huaiye’s room with a face full of anticipation.

“Brother.”

“Hmm?” Gu Huaiye responded, his eyes never leaving the document.

“I’ve caught up with the classmates’ progress. The teacher praised me for being smart.”

“Really?” Gu Huaiye curled his lips into a smile. “That’s great.”

Seeing that Gu Huaiye hadn’t looked up at him once, Xie Miaohan felt a sense of loss. He turned his gaze and glared fiercely at the computer on the desk.

A few minutes later, Xie Miaohan called out to Gu Huaiye again.

“Brother.”

“Hmm?”

Xie Miaohan pursed his lips, intending to show the test paper to Gu Huaiye.

The phone on the desk suddenly rang. Gu Huaiye quickly picked it up, stood up, turned his back to Xie Miaohan, and answered the call.

“Mr. Chen, please give me another ten minutes. I’ll finish it and send it to you right away.”

Xie Miaohan gripped the test paper tightly and turned to leave.

Back in his room, he crumpled the test paper into a ball and threw it into the trash can, staring coldly at the wad of paper.

“You’re really useless.”

“You can’t even please Brother.”
