Part 2
Making light of a universally despised dead man seemed to be absolutely correct.
This gun was like a warhorse or a luxury car—it had easily become their stake. Now it was being put on display merely to show off a piece of booty.
Yu Shi’s breathing became rapid, and his gaze pierced through the air like a blade, staring at him for a good while.
From the beginning of the conversation until now, he had been polite and restrained, following the social etiquette of a junior toward a senior, never showing such outward emotion.
Xie Chengfeng felt the offense in his gaze and frowned, not knowing why.
Yu Shi suddenly said, “This gun is priceless in the industry. It sounds like you got a huge bargain.”
He paused and curled his lips into a cold smile. “But don’t you think it’s creepy to carry it around? After all, the previous owner died a miserable death and was a heinous sinner.”
His tone was light, and the cold smile in his eyes was bone-chilling.
Xie Chengfeng wasn’t superstitious and said disdainfully, “You’re still too young and don’t know military tradition. Using a weapon used by a captive is a symbol of conquest. During the dynastic era, it was popular to use the enemy’s skull as a wine cup. Even the K9 Headquarters was built near the site of a mass grave. What does a mere gun matter?”
Yu Shi said, “It’s my feudal superstition. A person as upright as you certainly won’t care about these unfounded curses. You will surely have smooth sailing, sitting firmly like Mount Tai.”
Clearly words of blessing, yet Xie Chengfeng felt uneasy hearing them and looked at him unhappily.
In the distance stood the guards of the Falcon Regiment. Xie Ren was standing next to a face-covered Alpha.
the Alpha laughed and said, “What on earth did they talk about to make your dad unable to speak? That instructor is really a talent.”
“I told you not to mention my dad at school; the walls have ears,” Xie Ren said unhappily.
“With the sensitivity of us two, who would dare to eavesdrop?” the Alpha said. “You’re about to graduate; there’s no need to be so low-key.”
Xie Ren looked worried. “There’s an old saying—’love the house and its crow’—but hating someone can also extend to those around them. He doesn’t seem to like Old Xie much; I wonder if he’ll even implicate me in the future.”
“Pfft, there’s nothing you can do about that. Can you still cut ties with Old Xie?”
Xie Ren didn’t speak, his expression serious.
The Alpha stopped laughing. “Brat, you aren’t really thinking that, are you? Is there water in your brain?”
“I haven’t thought that much,” Xie Ren said irritably. “Even if I really cut ties, it would be because he isn’t a good father, nothing to do with anyone else.”
The Alpha patted his shoulder and sighed. “You and Ah Zheng really are good brothers—same mold. Forgetting your father once you have a wife.”
Xie Ren glared at him. “What nonsense are you talking about? He’s my teacher!”
He suddenly raised his voice, startling the Alpha.
“Holy shit, why are you so agitated? I just said it casually! Keep it down… I didn’t say he was your wife. I know you have a pure teacher-student relationship.”
Xie Ren was silent, frowning for a long time before saying, “Li Zheng still has no intention of returning?”
“The two of you are so close and you don’t know? How would I know?”
“The communication there is poor; we haven’t been in touch much lately.”
The Alpha shrugged. “I went to the Ninth Zone on a mission a while ago. He’s still the same, saying he’ll come back to help with the funeral when Marshal Li dies… It sounds quite unlucky; I didn’t dare tell you.”
Xie Ren said calmly, “If that day ever comes, the sky will change for the Celestial Gnomon. He’ll have to come back whether he wants to or not.”
“True. In the interstellar world, they say Oro is only wary of the four Marshals and doesn’t dare violate the century-long peace treaty.”
While the two were chatting, a cleaner pushed a cleaning cart past. He was tall and walked with a hunched back.
Xie Ren, who was originally relaxed, suddenly paused when his eyes swept over him and barked, “Stop.”
The Alpha immediately stopped talking, his right hand habitually resting on his gun.
The cleaner looked back and asked with an accent, “Officer, are you calling me?”
Under the sanitation hat was a plain face. Xie Ren stared at him for a while and asked, “What are you doing in here?”
The cleaner wasn’t panicked; he turned and pointed to the skeletal gun display case. “There’s a water stain there. The team leader told me to come and clean it up.”
Xie Ren looked up at the ceiling; there were no signs of a leak.
The cleaner said, “A leader was drinking water and accidentally spilled it on the floor.”
He asked tentatively, “Is there anything else? My work isn’t done yet.”
The Alpha with the gun said coldly, “It’s fine; go on.” He then turned to Xie Ren. “Is there something wrong with that person?”
Xie Ren shook his head. “The back looks familiar. Do you have the list for the cleaning team there?”
“I’ll ask later. Blame your logistics; they weren’t supposed to hire outside help. That guy likely wanted to earn some extra money and temporarily brought in the cleaning team from the government office.”
Xie Ren showed a disgusted expression. It was that Tang Tianhao again.
At dusk, the venue closed, and the school returned to quiet.
Xie Ren changed his clothes to go to the banquet. Before leaving, he thought of that idiot Tang Tianhao and dropped by the administration building, planning to question him about the cleaning team.
As he reached the third floor, he unexpectedly ran into Yu Shi, who was locking up.
Xie Ren smiled and wanted to speak, but he caught a very faint scent of another Alpha. The scent was unfamiliar, like a type of leather, and the corners of his mouth instantly dropped.
A high-level Alpha’s sense of smell was extremely sharp. In the mixed pheromones, there was a faint scent of blood. He was all too familiar with this scent.
Xie Ren looked sharply toward the end of the hallway. The voice-controlled lights for the entire third floor were out; it didn’t look like anyone else was there.
“What are you doing here?” Yu Shi broke the silence.
Xie Ren looked at him and said, “I have something to discuss with Staff Officer Tang. I ordered a meal for you; remember to eat dinner.”
Yu Shi’s pupils constricted, and his expression seemed a bit stiff, though Xie Ren didn’t notice.
Xie Ren’s attention was at the end of the hallway. That scent was too dangerous; it reminded him to go check immediately. He took two steps and was suddenly grabbed by the wrist.
Yu Shi’s hands were always cool, and pressing them against his pulse felt very comfortable. The palm was soft and smooth, like a piece of sticky cotton candy.
He clearly hadn’t used much strength, yet Xie Ren was pulled into a stumble. He looked over in disbelief.
Yu Shi’s eyelashes fluttered slightly, so subtly it was hard to notice. He asked, “Aren’t you going to eat with me?”
He didn’t seem happy. “Dressed like this—who are you going to see?”
The exact same questions Xie Ren had asked. Back then, his heart had felt like a green fruit.
Sour, frustrated.
Xie Ren looked into those light brown eyes, which were filled with a faint mist. He only felt a buzz in his head, his blood rushing upward. His thoughts instantly became a jumbled mess, and he forgot what he had been about to do.
Translator’s Note: “Forgetting one’s father once they have a wife” (有了老婆忘了爹 – Yǒule lǎopó wàngle diē) is a classic Chinese idiom about someone prioritizing their romantic partner over their parents. It’s used jokingly here by the Alpha friend!
- Dana Prison (达纳监狱 – Dánà jiānyù): A fictional high-security prison mentioned in the story.
- Mount Tai (泰山 – Tàishān): One of the Five Great Mountains of China, often used to symbolize stability and weightiness.
- The Sidewinder (响尾 – Xiǎngwěi): Literally “Rattlesnake tail,” a cool name for a pheromone-controlled gun. Looks like Yu Shi is using a bit of “Omega charm” to keep Xie Ren from discovering Zheng Xiao or the bug. Can’t wait to see where this lead us!
