Part 2
Yu An thought for a moment. “Not as interesting as I imagined, but not too bad either.”
There were many interesting classmates at school, and some cute little girls gave him many candies and small cakes. Yu An’s desk drawer was currently filled with a large pile of snacks—all welcome gifts from his classmates.
Fu Yunshu nodded upon hearing this. “That’s good then.”
He had originally been worried Yu An wouldn’t be able to adapt to school life; now it seemed little Yu An’s adaptability was quite strong.
Yu An returned the snow snake to Fu Yunshu. The snake rubbed against Yu An’s hand reluctantly. [Little one, don’t give me back to that annoying guy. Wouldn’t it be better if I followed you?]
Yu An looked at Fu Yunshu and tapped the snake’s head. [But Brother Yunshu is your good friend.]
The snow snake snorted. [He is not.]
If the Evolved weren’t unable to leave the Xenogenic that infected them for long, Fu Yunshu would likely have killed the snow snake long ago. After all, he couldn’t accept having something he detested following him.
Yu An knew nothing of this. He only knew that the snow snake and Fu Yunshu were inseparable—a sign only good friends would show.
After Fu Yunshu took the snow snake, he stuffed it directly into his pocket and turned around. “Let’s go. It’s time for lunch.”
Gu Yixing circled behind Yu An and pushed him forward. “Let’s go, let’s go. I’ve been hungry for ages. Let’s see what delicious food this school has.”
Meanwhile, Gu Ersheng suddenly sensed a gaze. He looked back and met Xu Mingyao’s eyes in the distance. He clearly saw Xu Mingyao’s gaze fixed on Yu An. He raised an eyebrow slightly and turned to follow Yu An and the others.
Gu Ersheng: “An-an, do you know Xu Mingyao?”
“I do. He’s in my class.” Yu An nodded. “Do you know him?”
“Of course I do.” As they walked, Gu Ersheng introduced him to Yu An. “Xu Mingyao is the youngest son of the Xu family in Kyoto. He has an older brother who is an S-rank Arbiter, but Xu Mingyao has no abilities. To let him live a stable life, his family has hidden the existence of Xenogenics from him.”
Yu An fell into deep thought. He remembered Old Man Xu. He was a very stern grandfather who used a cane, but his cane wasn’t for walking—it was for hitting people.
Xiao Bai hopped out at this moment, raising one small wing. [I know! I also know that Old Man Xu and Old Man Fu used to fight over the same woman!]
Yu An, Gu Yixing, Gu Ersheng: “…!!!”
They turned their heads in unison to look at Fu Yunshu, their eyes filled with obvious gossip and curiosity.
Fu Yunshu laughed helplessly. “Don’t look at me. I don’t know either. I’ve been at the Base since I was two and rarely go home. I’m not close to the old man.”
Since even his own grandson didn’t know, they could only count on Xiao Bai to continue revealing the secrets.
Xiao Bai puffed out its chest and continued the gossip with a sigh. [That was ten years ago. Two sixty-something-year-old men both fell for a professor at Kyoto University’s Foreign Languages Department who had been widowed for many years. The female professor was in her fifties but still had charm; she enchanted the two old men to no end.]
[Later, the professor grew tired of the harassment and boarded a plane overnight to flee the country, hiding from them and never returning. The two old men, due to their special statuses, weren’t allowed to leave the country to pursue love, so they blamed each other, believing the other’s persistent pursuit had separated them from their lover.]
[At that time, Old Man Fu had a broken leg and used a cane. When the fight got heated, he literally stood on one leg and lifted his cane to beat Old Man Xu. Since then, Old Man Xu has also carried a cane daily, ready to fight Old Man Fu to the death at any time.]
Xiao Bai described it vividly, and Yu An and the others listened with great interest. Yu An opened his small mouth in shock, unable to imagine that such highly respected professors as Old Man Fu and Old Man Xu would have such a past.
Fu Yunshu listened to his own grandfather’s gossip, looking both awkward and politely attentive.
Xiao Bai covered its mouth with a wing and snickered. [I even have a video of them tearing each other’s hair out. Do you want to see?]
To hesitate for a second would be a disrespect to the grandfathers; Yu An and the others nodded repeatedly.
Xiao Bai: [Alright then. I’ll send it to your phones when we get back. Remember to give Xiao Bai a good review, dear~]
Yu An squeezed it back and forth, saying with a smile, “Is it a gift from Auntie Ruoyi?”
Xiao Bai: [It is! Actually, if you ask Master Wen, he’d know too. He was eating an apple nearby while they were fighting, but the apple was snatched by Old Man Xu to throw at Old Man Fu.]
How exciting!
But the next second, Yu An pouted and said protectively, “How could they bully my Papa?”
Snatched Papa’s apple—that’s too much.
Amidst the gossip, the group walked to the cafeteria. The school cafeteria had three floors. The first and second floors had a rich variety of dishes at affordable prices. The third floor had luxury dishes with impressive prices, specifically for wealthy students.
Meanwhile, Yu An and the others needed to monitor Zhou Xia, so they searched from the first floor and found him in a small corner on the second floor.
Zhou Xia was sitting alone, using a long table by himself. Students at the other tables were all in groups, chatting as they ate, while his area was cold and desolate, standing out in the bustling cafeteria.
Yu An stared at Zhou Xia and said softly, “He looks very lonely.”
After a morning of observation, Fu Yunshu roughly understood Zhou Xia’s awkward position in the class. The gap between a scholarship student who got in on grades and the second-generation rich kids was hard to bridge.
Furthermore, Zhou Xia’s personality was introverted and timid, making him unlikeable. Over time, he became a marginal figure in the class, without a single friend.
Fu Yunshu told this to Yu An, and Yu An was stunned. “So… is he being isolated?”
Fu Yunshu nodded. “You could say that.”
Gu Yixing leaned on Gu Ersheng’s shoulder and sighed. “He’s quite impressive, though. He hasn’t said a word all morning and has been focused entirely on reading. Doesn’t he get bored?”
Gu Ersheng nodded with a serious face. “He really is impressive. If it were Brother, he’d probably choke to death if he didn’t speak for a whole morning.”
“Gu Ersheng!” Gu Yixing naturally heard the mockery in his words and pinched his face, pulling it back and forth. “You’ve got some nerve. I’m your older brother!”
The two were always bickering, and Yu An was used to it. He looked at Zhou Xia’s lonely back and thought of the period after his grandmother passed away—at that time, he had only himself.
But he was luckier than Zhou Xia; Monday was with him.
Yu An’s feelings were complicated. After a thought, he suggested, “Let’s sit with him.”
Fu Yunshu saw his kindness. “You’d better go ask him. Zhou Xia and we are not friends; he might not necessarily welcome us sitting with him.”
After all, they were the ones monitoring him.
Yu An still decided to give it a try. Fu Yunshu didn’t stop him and asked what he wanted to eat—he would go buy it.
Yu An looked over various signs and chose one after a while. “I’ll have the steamed pork with rice flour.”
“Okay.”
Fu Yunshu went to buy the steamed pork for Yu An, while the twins also wandered around the cafeteria to find food they liked. Before leaving, Gu Ersheng turned Yu An halfway around to face himself.
“Little An-an, just tell Zhou Xia there are no seats left in the cafeteria.” Gu Ersheng glanced at Zhou Xia, his ink-black brows furrowed with worry. “Sitting with a stranger is worse than sharing a table with him.”
Yu An felt he carried a heavy responsibility. He silently clenched his small fists and nodded. “Okay!”
On the other side, the eating Zhou Xia suddenly felt a wave of hair-raising dread. A terrifying sensation, as if being stared at by a natural predator, lingered and wouldn’t go away.
He put down his chopsticks and looked around nervously. Seeing Yu An clearly walking toward him, Zhou Xia’s heart tightened. He instinctively wanted to run, but he had only eaten a few bites; he couldn’t waste the food!
In an instant, Zhou Xia was frozen, watching helplessly as Yu An drew closer and closer to him.
