Extra: Qing/Ci (Part 2) part 1
Shu Ci personally felt that Lu Wanqing’s worry and anxiety were a bit excessive.
To him, his original world was merely a “place of origin.” Having reached the pinnacle of a successful career with no particularly deep emotional or familial ties, it didn’t really matter whether he ever returned.
The only real gap between the two worlds lay in… sexuality.
In his old world, he had neither the function to bear children nor the need to worry about fulfilling “paternal duties” one day; there was nothing and no one to tie him down. Unlike now—where as soon as Lu Wanqing wore an expression of suppressed longing, Shu Ci would feel distressed for half the day and exhaust himself trying to coax the man.
Otherwise, Yu Xingxing and Cui You would contact him every few days, complaining that they couldn’t read the General’s mind and lamenting the hellish training sessions that had become their daily routine.
In short, compared to when he first arrived, the priority of returning home had slipped further and further down Shu Ci’s list. Cleaning up the mess left by Zhao Qinfeng and rebuilding their home had already taken quite some time.
Shu Changze had not erased the collective memory of the people’s resistance against the mutant creatures. That memory—painful, resilient, and forged by Alphas, Betas, and Omegas standing together for a shared tomorrow—was the most precious gift polished by generations of sacrifice.
Shen Lin had used every means possible to pin the blame for the mutant creatures on noble families like the Gu and Chen clans, who had allowed evil to shroud the halls of power. The conspiracy regarding matching rates was also laid bare to the public.
Freedom in love and partner selection became the hallmark of the new era.
The ways in which individuals realized their self-worth became increasingly diverse, gradually eroding the discriminatory treatment that existed solely because one was an Alpha, Beta, or Omega.
And the ones who laid the foundation for all of this—Shu Ci, Shen Ti, Shen Lin, and Lu Wanqing—became idols for the younger generation.
Along with this came a surging wave of public support for Lu Wanqing’s promotion.
He Lian was quite supportive as well. If he could drag Lu Wanqing into his position, he could retire early.
Unexpectedly, he was rejected by Lu Wanqing with righteous indignation.
This refusal only stirred He Lian’s stubborn streak. He was determined to make Lu Wanqing agree, no matter what.
It was said that whenever Lu Wanqing came to report on work, the gentle, persuasive tones of the dignified Alpha—who was already a grandfather—could be heard echoing from the Marshal’s office.
“Grandpa, how are you even more of a spoiled brat than I am?”
He Yao pushed open the door, carrying tea as she walked between the two men. She handed a cup of cooling tea to Lu Wanqing. “Brother Ci is basically living on the film set now. And here you are, trying to strip General Lu of his right even to go home for a holiday. That’s too much!”
“…” He Lian felt like he was suffering the consequences of being a willing volunteer for overtime for decades.
Lu Wanqing curved his lips, hiding a smile behind his teacup. He said to He Yao, “We’ve arranged a family dinner tonight. Your grandpa is busy and can’t go, but what about you?”
He Yao’s eyes lit up. “Is Brother Shen going?”
Lu Wanqing looked at her. “Are you asking about Shen Ti or his baby? Cui You went to pick up the kid; they should be here soon.”
Cui You and Shen Ti’s baby was an adorable Omega who had become the darling of the Military Department since birth. He Yao had entered the military academy when choosing her major and had recently been assigned to do some work at the Military Department. She had inevitably fallen victim to the chubby little hands of that “Milk O.”
“Then I’m definitely going!” He Yao nodded frantically. She shot a glance at her elder. “I should… already be off the clock!”
He Lian looked at her with pure disdain. “You’re just slacking off even when you are at work.”
“Did you drive? I’ll give you a lift.” Lu Wanqing stood up. “I have those autographs you wanted in the car; Shu Ci got them for you at the film set this time.”
“Wow!!! Brother Ci is the best!!!” He Yao couldn’t hide the smile on her face. “Then I’ll trouble you for the ride. Lately, there’s been a Beta chasing me, camping outside every day waiting for me to get off work. This way, I won’t have to find an excuse.”
She mentioned it casually, but the hand He Lian was using to hold his documents stopped.
He lowered his voice. “Who’s chasing you? How come I didn’t know about this?”
“He’s from the neighboring Military Medical University. Last time during the inter-school basketball game when I got injured…” As He Yao spoke, she realized she hadn’t reported this to the family and quickly shut her mouth.
“I’ve come clean now. Don’t go telling my parents; I’m afraid they’ll go and find trouble for Si Mian!”
He Lian froze for a moment. That child… is their surname Si?
He lowered his gaze, his throat bobbing slightly, and waved his hand dismissively. “Go, go. Seeing you hanging around here annoys me.”
Seeing He Yao leave, Lu Wanqing brought the other cup of tea she had poured to He Lian. “I’m taking a long leave to go on a trip with Shu Ci. If you don’t have any other candidates, I’ll consider the succession matter after I return.”
They were preparing to return to that other world. Not knowing if there would be a time difference, they had to save up all their vacation days.
He Lian took the teacup and gave him a faint look.
They were all people with ties and lives to live. Now that the children he had adopted were all established in their careers, there wasn’t much for him to worry about anymore.
“Go and have fun. I can work for a few more years.” Only by staying busy could he forget the yearning buried by time.
The family dinner was held at the villa area in the Central District, not at the old house on Qinglu Road. After Shu Ci arranged everything at home, he went out to pick up Cui You and Shen Ti.
“Did I spend all that money just to watch your team write a piece of sh*t proposal? I made the requirements and issues very clear during the meeting—fix it!”
Shu Ci took the bag from Shen Ti’s hand and shot a glance at Cui You.
The father, who had already evolved into a veteran “nanny-dad,” was pushing the stroller with one hand while fanning Shen Ti with the other. He whispered a complaint to Shu Ci in a low, breathy voice: “He’s been scolding them the whole way… hasn’t stopped yet.”
“Our President Shen has high standards.” Shu Ci looked at the ring on his hand. “Oh? Remarried?”
“He put it on himself,” Shen Ti said crossly after hanging up the phone. After speaking, he looked Shu Ci up and down. “Why is there still no movement from you?”
Shu Ci: “…What movement?”
Shen Ti reached out and pressed against his stomach. “Is it you who can’t do it, or General Lu? It’s been years; where’s the kid? I don’t believe you two can spend your heat and estrus periods peacefully when you’re like dry tinder and a blazing fire.”
Shu Ci looked at the sky. Actually, he and Lu Wanqing had never intentionally avoided it. There just wasn’t any.
He felt that this matter had nothing to do with whether they worked hard or not. Subjectively, he had only accepted the idea of sleeping together; he had never accepted the idea of a “big man” like himself giving birth. It seemed his subconscious resistance influenced reality.
Of course, Lu Wanqing understood him very well. Expecting someone with a completely different physiological structure to accept that they could have a baby was asking a lot.
If you asked around on the street, no Alpha would be willing to give birth themselves. Therefore, he didn’t want Shu Ci to wrong himself just to adapt to this world.
So, the two of them decided to keep things as they were for the time being and take it one step at a time.
“Old Lu took a long leave; I bet he wants to go back and ‘work hard’ at it.” Seeing Shu Ci remain silent, Cui You freed up a hand and patted him. “If there are any issues during pregnancy, have him ask me. I guarantee to teach and ensure success!”
He had married, divorced, and had a child all before Lu Wanqing. The thought that his seniority as a nanny-dad would be longer than Lu Wanqing’s made Cui You feel very proud.
Shen Ti: “…” Shu Ci: “…”
By the time Lu Wanqing and He Yao returned, many people had already arrived. Shen Ti and Cui You were holding the “Milk O” baby, basking in the attention of the crowd. Seeing Lu Wanqing, the little fellow climbed onto his father’s shoulder and babbled, “Unca Lu—”
He Yao pouted with her hands on her hips and stepped forward quickly. “What about me?” “Sister Yao.” “That’s more like it! It makes all those diapers I changed for you while your dad was in meetings worth it!”
Lu Wanqing looked around but couldn’t find his person.
Just as he was about to head upstairs, someone suddenly nudged his arm with an elbow. Turning his head, he saw Yi Xinghui and Li Yi standing together in their white lab coats.
“Your partner and Chief Shen are on the terrace.” She lifted a bag in her hand. “Specialties sent by Second Senior Sister from over there, plus the photostated local gazette Ci wanted from their side.”
Lu Wanqing: “Why don’t you give it to him yourselves?”
Yi Xinghui glanced at Li Yi. “We’re catching a flight. There’s a new glandular disease in District 6 that needs support.”
“Go then. If you need anything, bring it up with the research institute.”
Lu Wanqing carried the exquisite souvenir bag to the terrace. He found that besides Shen Lin and Shu Ci, there was another person he hadn’t seen in a long time.
“General Lu.”
Zhao Qian had just been released from prison. His hair was short, close to his scalp, but he looked spirited, with a circle of stubble around his lips.
This father, whose weakness had been seized by the Gu family, had finally returned to the light after serving his sentence for aiding their crimes.
Shen Lin took off his glasses, pulled a handkerchief from his pocket, and wiped them unhurriedly. “Mr. Zhao, regarding the topic we were just discussing—are you interested in coming to my study to chat more?”
“No problem.” Zhao Qian was overjoyed.
He knew that Shen Lin always presented an image of being courteous to the wise in his propaganda, but he hadn’t expected that a few casual political opinions of his would also catch his attention.
After the two left, Lu Wanqing handed Yi Xinghui’s bag to Shu Ci and draped his coat over his shoulders.
“What were you talking about?” “Zhao Qian’s daughter.” Shu Ci took out the village gazette, flipped through a couple of pages, and then put it away solemnly. “The sanatorium on Longji Island has been completed. I asked him if he wanted to send his daughter there; I won’t charge him.”
The Omegas rescued from the Sweetheart dessert market had all suffered more or less psychological trauma. Longji Island could now provide the most comfortable environment and psychological treatment services.
“What did he say?”
“He agreed. He said he could send the child to the island in a few days. But he won’t accept it for free; he gave Shen Lin many connections and channels that were originally controlled by the Gu family.”
Lu Wanqing hugged him. “That’s perfect. Let’s go to the island and take a look ourselves.”
