Chapter 64: Staying Outside His Room Door All Night
No one came to open the door.
Shen Xingyu knocked several times, but still, there was nothing.
“Shengsheng?”
No response.
Whether Liang Sheng was being petulant and refusing to acknowledge him or something else, he didn’t want anything to actually happen to him!
The door was locked from the inside and wouldn’t open.
Shen Xingyu raised his foot and kicked it hard. Fortunately, the doors of the ancient residence were quite old, and it was easily kicked open.
“Shengsheng!”
He shouted. The light was on in the room. He thought he would see Liang Sheng lying on the floor unconscious, but he didn’t. The other was sleeping in bed, covered with a blanket, and holding a plush doll in his arms. He was sleeping very peacefully.
He hadn’t woken up even after such a big commotion; it seemed the medication had taken effect, causing him to fall into a deep sleep.
Shen Xingyu finally breathed a sigh of relief, but he still felt a bit uneasy. He raised a hand to touch his forehead and face; they weren’t hot or cold. He then checked his breathing; it was steady. Fortunately, there hadn’t been a flare-up of his condition.
“It’s good that you’re fine…”
He set his mind at ease, only later realizing that he was worrying about Liang Sheng again. He couldn’t help but say irritably: “I just didn’t want anything to happen to you in Lao-ye-ye’s house. Otherwise, he’d blame me for not looking after you.”
These words seemed to be spoken to himself.
Liang Sheng couldn’t hear them.
Shen Xingyu wanted to carry him back to the master bedroom to sleep. He leaned down to look at his face; his sleeping face was tranquil. His lips, which used to be moist and pink, were now a bit dry. He was huddled in the corner, a small figure. Even in his sleep, his brow was slightly furrowed, but at least he wasn’t crying, nor was he plagued by nightmares.
He remembered that Liang Sheng would always sob in the middle of the night, and he personally hated being disturbed while sleeping. Every time, he would wake Liang Sheng up and make him crouch by the bedroom door. He’d crouch there for half the night until he didn’t dare cry anymore before he was allowed back into bed.
Thinking about it now, he had been a bit excessive.
But even if Liang Sheng was driven to the floor to crouch in the dead of winter, shivering with cold, he never spoke a word of complaint.
Now, he’d give him a cold look at the slightest provocation.
Shen Xingyu couldn’t help but miss the Liang Sheng from before.
“Do you really sleep that soundly away from me?”
He asked troubledly, his fingers gently brushing away the stray hairs from Liang Sheng’s forehead. Looking at his quiet and gentle appearance in sleep, he couldn’t bear to look away.
“If only you were as good as you are when you’re asleep.”
Shen Xingyu suddenly began to like his well-behaved manner again. In the past, he always despised him for being too obedient and cowardly, wishing he would be more lively. Now that he wasn’t weak anymore, he was instead too stubborn and wouldn’t follow his lead.
In his sleep, Liang Sheng seemed to sense Shen Xingyu’s gaze, and his eyelashes flickered slightly.
Shen Xingyu hurriedly straightened up, fearing that Liang Sheng would catch him staring. He instinctively wanted to find an excuse for why he was in the guest room, but then he remembered that this was his own home—he could be wherever he wanted, so why waste words explaining?
However, Liang Sheng didn’t wake up. Instead, he turned over and continued to sleep, and the Da’ergou in his arms fell to the floor.
Shen Xingyu bent over to pick it up. Looking at the white dog with large ears in his hand, he frowned in confusion.
He often saw Liang Sheng holding this thing while sleeping. Not just for sleeping, but other daily necessities also had the Da’ergou pattern. Did he really like it that much?
Previously, he only thought it was childish and ignored it. Now, the more he looked at it, the more he found it an eyesore! He wasn’t allowed to be held by Liang Sheng while sleeping—why should this thing be allowed!
Shen Xingyu felt he was really going crazy, even being jealous of a plush doll. He gave the doll a disdainful look, but he couldn’t bring himself to put it back on Liang Sheng’s bed. Just as he was about to find a place to throw it away, the person behind him suddenly began to whimper and cry.
Shen Xingyu hurriedly turned around. He saw Liang Sheng fuzzily looking for something. Because the medication was too strong, he couldn’t wake up. He sobbed instinctively, his small face covered in tear tracks. He kept murmuring something about “Xiao Gui.”
Was that the name of this plush doll?
Shen Xingyu furrowed his brow, but he still couldn’t bear to see Liang Sheng cry. He stuffed the Da’ergou back into his arms.
His sense of security returned, and Liang Sheng stopped crying. His pink nose twitched, and he fell back into a deep sleep.
“Hiss…”
Shen Xingyu took a breath. “Just like a child. Childish.” Although he said that, his eyes couldn’t stop staring at Liang Sheng. The more he looked, the more he felt his little wife was quite cute.
Cute?
He was finished. He really was going crazy.
Shen Xingyu shook his head. He couldn’t get addicted to this.
Since he wanted to sleep here, let him. For the sake of his illness, he’d endure sleeping in separate rooms for one night.
As long as he wasn’t afraid.
It also saved him from tossing and turning.
Of course, it definitely wasn’t because he was worried about Liang Sheng.
Shen Xingyu thought stubbornly. He didn’t plan to stay and keep Liang Sheng company either, fearing he would scare him if he suddenly woke up.
At the door, he looked back at the sleeping man in the room. There was clearly reluctance in his eyes, but he still left stubbornly. It wasn’t like he couldn’t sleep without Liang Sheng.
The next morning.
Sunlight filtered through the thin gauze curtains, splashing onto the bed.
Liang Sheng’s eyelashes flickered, and he slowly woke up.
There was still a bit of blurriness in his eyes.
He stretched, rubbed his eyes, and saw the Da’ergou lying quietly beside him. The corners of his mouth curled up. He picked it up and gave it a kiss, then put it back and covered it with the blanket.
“Good morning, Xiao Gui.”
Liang Sheng patted the Da’ergou’s head.
He was in high spirits today.
Perhaps it was because he had slept soundly yesterday without nightmares, and Shen Xingyu hadn’t driven him away. It was the best sleep he had had since marrying into the Shen family.
Oh, right. He had to help Lao-ye-ye make incense today.
He had promised at the dinner table yesterday.
Liang Sheng hurriedly pulled back the covers and got out of bed. He washed up and got dressed, then opened the door to go out. From the corner of his eye, he saw someone sitting by the door—it was actually Shen Xingyu!
The man was leaning against the wall, his head tilted to one side. He was sleeping fuzzily. His hair, which was usually meticulously styled, was hanging over his forehead, and there was a faint hint of moisture at the corners of his eyes.
Liang Sheng was astonished. Had he really sat here all night?
Surely not?
How could a man who cared so much about his dignity stoop to sitting at a door?
He slowly crouched down, tilting his head to look at the sleeping man. Shen Xingyu wasn’t sleeping soundly. Having gone without sleep for several nights, stubble had quietly appeared on his chin, making his cold appearance look a bit more worn down.
The heart that was filled with resentment toward Shen Xingyu suddenly beat frantically for a moment. Unconsciously, he was attracted.
Liang Sheng hurriedly shook his head, and his flickering gaze gradually returned to calm. What was he thinking? Not loving him anymore meant exactly that. Continuing to repeat the same mistakes would only lead to a more tragic end.
Yes. Don’t be fooled by this man!
He glared fiercely at Shen Xingyu on the floor. He raised his hand and, through the air, mimicked slapping the man’s face left and right. His small mouth moved as he cursed:
“I’ll never be good with you again! You’re the one who didn’t cherish me! Don—don’t blame me for being heartless! I’m not that cheap! I won’t be fine just because you soothe me! You big jerk! I feel disgusted just seeing you!”
Shen Xingyu was woken up by the noise. He opened his sleepy eyes and happened to see Liang Sheng mimicking left and right hooks toward him, though they didn’t actually hit his face. His puffed-up appearance was like a little cat with flared-up fur.
He was stunned for a moment. The mood he had spent the night agonizing over finally improved a bit. If Liang Sheng could still curse at him, did his stomach not hurt anymore?
“You’re awake? Is your body feeling better?”
He looked Liang Sheng up and down. Although his voice was still indifferent and lacked emotion, the worry in his eyes was almost impossible to hide.
“Wh—what does it have to do with you!”
Liang Sheng hurriedly stood up. When people are embarrassed, they pretend to be busy. He didn’t dare to look directly at the man. He busied himself with tidying his clothes and hair, then turned to leave: “I’m going to pay my respects to Lao-ye-ye!”
“Were you… cursing at me just now?”
Liang Sheng, with his back toward him, heard the sudden question. Thinking the man was angry, his heart trembled, but he still turned back stubbornly: “Who’s cursing at you? You’re overthinking it…”
The confidence he had to curse at the man suddenly weakened. He didn’t see any anger or hostility on Shen Xingyu’s face. He only saw the man looking at him quietly, those deep eyes becoming gentle in the morning light.
“You cursed quite well.”
The man gave a light smile, actually praising him.
Liang Sheng’s face turned red and hot from his gaze. He tugged at the corner of his clothes. “Crazy!”
“Who gave you permission to sleep at my door? Don’t think doing this will move me! I’ll only think you’re being hypocritical and despicable!”
His voice was soft, so his cursing lacked any real bite.
“Think whatever you want.” Shen Xingyu wanted to go along with him, but he habitually spoke with impatience.
“Hmph!”
Liang Sheng turned and left in a huff.
After breakfast, the Old Master went to the back garden to water the flowers. He told Liang Sheng and Shen Xingyu to go to the Xiangshi to make incense first.
Although Liang Sheng was extremely reluctant to be with this man, he couldn’t refuse because of the Old Master.
Shen Xingyu was naturally happy to be with Liang Sheng.
Once they entered the Xiangshi, Liang Sheng went about making incense on his own.
Shen Xingyu stood to one side, watching him grind materials.
Having followed the Old Master since childhood, he was also very familiar with making incense; it was second nature to him. However, as he grew older, he rarely touched it, focusing instead on the business battles of selling incense.
“Can you… go away? Why are you staring at me? Don’t you have to work?”
Liang Sheng was becoming increasingly annoyed with him.
In any case, his life was already worthless. He wasn’t afraid of Shen Xingyu torturing him. If the man tortured him to death, he’d actually have to thank him for letting him find peace.
“I don’t have to go to the company for the next few days, not until the heat dies down.”
As Shen Xingyu spoke, he reached for the Shijiu in Liang Sheng’s hand. “Let me help you.”
“I don’t need it! Go away!”
Liang Sheng moved away impatiently.
“Shengsheng, you don’t have to be so heartless, do you?”
Shen Xingyu felt a bit dejected. He was being so attentive; couldn’t the other give him a little bit of sweetness?
“You were the one who was heartless first…”
Liang Sheng’s voice suddenly lowered. His brow, hidden by his hair, concealed a trace of pain.
Shen Xingyu was stunned. This version of Liang Sheng made him feel uneasy. He didn’t know how to respond, so he could only try to coax him in his own self-centered way:
“Can you manage it alone? Making incense is very complicated. If you act a bit spoiled with me, I might be happy enough to give you some advice.”
“In your dreams! Shameless! Don’t think you’re the only one who knows how to make incense. Stop looking down on people.”
Liang Sheng gave him a sharp look.
Since being tortured on the island to the point of nearly dying, his attitude toward Shen Xingyu had become increasingly worse. Things he hadn’t dared to say before, he was now completely unafraid to say. He didn’t want to take his grievances to the grave.
Looking at Liang Sheng, Shen Xingyu’s gaze was dazed for a few seconds. He suddenly said in a low voice: “This way you’re acting… is quite like how you were before.”
Liang Sheng froze, and his movements stopped. This was the first time he had heard the man mention his former self. He instinctively wondered if the man had recovered his memory.
