Chapter 41: Jian An Had a Brain Hemorrhage?
The person on the bed currently had sunken cheeks and faint breathing. Lying there as if he could stop breathing at any moment, he could only be described as “clinging to a final breath”.
The doctor had said he likely wouldn’t survive the night.
Thinking of this, Ji Songtingās fingers tightened, a flash of pain and several traces of struggle appearing on his face.
Just as he was about to turn his head, Shen Chuyan immediately noticed his concern. He hurriedly shifted his body to block the man’s view, yet he still pretended to pull his hand away, pushing the man as he said:
“A-Ting, don’t mind me. Go and stay with Brother Xiao An. He needs you more. Iām fine…”
The moment the words left his mouth, he began to sway unsteadily, intentionally falling toward the other man.
Ji Songting caught him hurriedly. No longer considering Jian An behind him, he supported the youth as they walked out. “Let’s go back to your ward first and have Lu Huaishen take a look at you.”
“Okay.”
Shen Chuyan nodded with difficulty, biting his bloodless lip as he walked slowly. He looked like a withered eggplant that could collapse at any time.
He leaned enjoyably into the man’s embrace, casting a triumphant glance back at Jian An.
…
After performing a full-body examination on Shen Chuyan, Lu Huaishen removed his stethoscope. He pushed up his glasses with his middle finger out of habit, a look of contemplation on his face.
Aside from a slight case of low blood sugar, he truly could not see any other mess of problems; the “breathing difficulties” and “total body paralysis” simply did not exist.
After so many years as a doctor, he did not even need the examination to see at a glance that Shen Chuyan was faking it; no patient had such a rosy complexion.
But Ji Songtingās treatment of this sweetheart was truly meticulous, a complete world away from how he had treated Jian An last timeāhurling insults while shoving him for an examination.
He had spent many years in the romantic world, showing favor to all, yet he was utterly impressed by a man as “scummy” and “double-standard” as Ji Songting; if he ever had the chance, he really should ask for some advice.
Ji Songting carefully let go of the youthās back and turned to look at the stiff-faced Lu Huaishen, asking anxiously, “How is Xiao Yan? Is it serious?”
The other man glanced at Shen Chuyan and gave a meaningful smile. Then, with a solemn expression, he let out a fake gasp of surprise, followed by a pained shake of his head as he mocked:
“Tsk, hard to say.”
Hearing this exaggerated expression, Ji Songting furrowed his brow with half-doubt. “Whatās wrong?”
It was never a good sign when a doctor sighed. Shen Chuyan felt a bit afraid; psychological pressure made him feel an unprovoked panic as his malicious gaze turned fearful, dreading he might truly have some disease.
Seeing his fear of death, Lu Huaishenās lips curled into a playful smile. He cleared his throat and said:
“His heart alone is failingāheart failure and blocked vessels. Thatās why heās experiencing breathing difficulties and limb weakness. Heās prone to myocardial infarctions.”
As he continued his fabrication, he deliberately pulled at his open white coat. He held his chin in thought as if it were a serious matter, murmuring, “Furthermore, he is naturally missing one thing…”
Shen Chuyan was instantly terrified, his body shaking incessantly as he grabbed Ji Songting. “I… I have so many illnesses? A-Ting, what should I do? I don’t want to die.”
“Don’t be afraid. I won’t let anything happen to you.”
Ji Songting walked up to Lu Huaishen, his eyes full of anxiety as he believed every word of the diagnosis. “So, what exactly is he missing?”
Lu Huaishen flicked a bit of dust from his cuff. He lifted his eyelids and looked at the man with a faint, mocking smile:
“A heart-eye.”
The moment those last words were spoken, Ji Songting immediately realized the doctor had been fooling them the entire time. His temper flared instantly, and he kicked the man without hesitation:
“If you can’t do your job, resign! Is this how a doctor toys with a patient? Do you have any professional ethics at all? Youāre the one whoās sick! Did Xiao Yan offend you?”
After being soundly cursed at, Lu Huaishen was a bit displeased, his playful mood vanishing. Realizing for the first time that Ji Songting could be this protective of his “wife,” he immediately retorted:
“Hey, hey. It was just a joke. Is there a need for all this?”
To his surprise, the other man took a firm stance and said decisively, “As long as itās bad for Xiao Yan, there is a need.”
Having been terrified by the lie that he was plagued by a hundred diseases, Shen Chuyanās teeth chattered with rage and his lips twitched. Yet he could not burst out in a curse; he still had to play the role of an understanding person to make Ji Songting pity him even more. He advised:
“Itās okay, A-Ting. Dr. Lu was just joking with me. I didn’t expect it to just be a false alarm, but it makes me cherish life even more. Thank you, Dr. Lu!”
As he spoke, he gave Lu Huaishen a sweet smile that nonetheless held a hint of sharpness.
Lu Huaishen seemingly pretended not to see the look. Behind his polished lenses, his dark eyes were unfathomable as he said:
“How sensible. I really shouldn’t have joked with you. Aside from a slight case of low blood sugar, there is nothing much wrong with your body. A few bags of nutrient fluids will fix you up.”
Hearing this, Ji Songting finally let out a slow sigh of relief. But seeing the IV tube on the back of Shen Chuyanās hand, he could not help but think of Jian An.
He was certainly not worrying. After all, that man had plenty of people worrying for him; Ji Songting simply didn’t want Jian An to die too quickly or too soon.
Just as Lu Huaishen was about to leave, Ji Songting hesitated for a few seconds and followed him. His wrist was suddenly caught by Shen Chuyan, who asked piteously with a look of unease:
“A-Ting, where are you going again…?”
“I have a few words to say to Dr. Lu. Wait a moment.”
Gently prying the youthās hand away, Ji Songting grabbed Lu Huaishenās arm and pulled him out.
“President Ji, what are you doing?”
Lu Huaishen looked at the man in confusion, his eyes narrowing as he adjusted his slightly rumpled sleeve.
Ji Songting did not beat around the bush, asking directly, “Can a craniotomy for a brain hemorrhage lead to a full recovery?”
At this question, Lu Huaishen paused. He stared at the man, his eyes filled with a surge of confusion. “Brain hemorrhage? Who? Your little lover doesn’t have that disease.”
“Just tell me if itās possible.”
Rarely seeing him so urgent, Lu Huaishenās eyes flashed with a hint of surprise. He did not continue to tease, saying seriously:
“Yes. But it depends on the severity. Patients with mild hemorrhages who receive good post-operative care generally recover very quickly if their physical condition is good. However, recovery for severe cases might be impossible. If a severe patient’s condition before the surgery was grave, they wake up slowly after surgery, and the possibility of recovery is very slim.”
Ji Songting listened quietly, saying nothing.
After a moment of thought, the other man continued:
“Furthermore, the sequelae of a brain hemorrhage are very serious. If treatment is not timely, it can easily lead to hemiplegia, speech impairment, and mental cognitive impairment.”
“This serious…”
Ji Songtingās brow furrowed tightly, his deep eyes growing even darker as he asked, “Can you perform a craniotomy?”
Lu Huaishen shook his head. He appraised him for a moment and said helplessly, “You forgot. Iām an internal medicine doctor. For something as major as a craniotomy, you need a surgeon.”
“Mhm.”
“Why? Did Jian An have a brain hemorrhage?”
Hearing this, Ji Songting was momentarily stunned. A trace of indiscernible panic appeared in his cold eyes, but it was quickly hidden within those obsidian-like pupils.
Without a trace, he glanced at the interested Lu Huaishen. His face was as indifferent and detached as ever as he ignored the question and went straight back into the ward.
Lu Huaishen stood with his hands in his white coat pockets. With a smirk on his face, he let out a pained sigh and turned to leave.
…
By the time Shen Yunheng finished the hospitalization procedures and returned to the ward, it was already empty. Only the heavily comatose Jian An remained, unattended.
Looking at the chair placed neatly before the bed, the man who had just been sitting there had vowed to wait for Jian An to wake up, yet now he was nowhere to be found.
He had thought Ji Songting truly had a change of heart and realized the evil of his actions, yet it turned out he had just been talking; after all, who could endure loneliness?
Only poor Jian An…
Shen Yunheng let out a heavy sigh. He brought a basin of warm water and wrung out a towel, gently wiping the youthās jade-white face with extreme tenderness.
His eyes were filled with deep reluctance and pity. His movements were meticulous to the extreme, as if he were handling a rare treasureāso serious, and so devout.
It was only after he had carefully wiped Jian Anās arms and face from top to bottom that he reluctantly let go, gazing at him with pained and deep affection.
“Xiao An… do you still remember our first meeting? You were so small then, only six years old, weren’t you? Your mom dragged you to our house to be a baomu for a few days. She said she was a servant, but you were the one washing dishes and mopping the floor. You were so tinyāshorter than the mopāyet you learned everything so well.”
As those unforgettable images appeared before his eyes, Shen Yunheng first gave a bitter smile. Then his heart felt a sharp pain, as if someone were using a knife to cut away the flesh from his heart; his throat was so choked that it took a long time before he could speak:
“Back then, I didn’t understand anything. You were the first person to change my understandingāit turned out not all children got to eat McDonald’s or live a carefree life with people to love them.”
From that time on, a complex and subtle emotion had blossomed in him for Jian An. He likely wanted to do everything in his power to protect him, to give him a happy and joyful life.
But this stubborn person never accepted anyone’s charity. Even when falling into a mire, he was unwilling to grasp the hand someone reached out to him.
Whether it was the tanghulu when they were six, or the countless times now when he wanted to enter Jian Anās shattered life, that person had always been refusing him.
This made him feel very suffocated…
Shen Yunheng looked anxiously at the clock on the wall. It was already 11:00 PM; in another hour, it would be early the next morning…
If Jian An did not pull through, what would he do?
He could not imagine it, nor did he dare to. The pained thought of a living person turning into a small black box caused him to feel as if his entire world had collapsed.
His eyes suddenly grew wet with shifting liquid. Shen Yunheng hurriedly stood up and stood by the window with his back to Jian An, terrified that his unsightly state would be seen.
