Chapter 61: For Gege
Jiang Qing looked at his “dying of shame” expression. Combined with his description, he vaguely understood what was happening.
He was at a vigorous age, after all, and after experiencing such a chaotic night, it wasn’t entirely unexpected for some difficult-to-mention physiological or psychological lingering effects to remain.
But Jiang Qing knew that if this wasn’t handled properly, this “not right” feeling could evolve into a much more troublesome problem.
He stood up and walked over to Jiang Linmu. Jiang Linmu instinctively tried to back away, but Jiang Qing pressed a hand onto his shoulder.
“Look at me, Jiang Linmu.”
Jiang Linmu was forced to look up into Jiang Qing’s eyes.
“Listen,” Jiang Qing said clearly, word by word. “Everything that happened that night was a hallucination and a loss of control caused by the drug. Your body and your brain were forcibly interfered with by external chemicals, producing reactions and memories that do not belong to your true will.”
He paused, his tone turning more serious. “The drug has long worn off. You are a normal person. Those lingering ‘feelings’ are like a lingering cough after a bad flu; it’s just a bit of disorder during the body’s self-regulation and recovery process. Do you understand?”
Jiang Linmu stared at him blankly. “…Just… disorder?”
“Right, just disorder,” Jiang Qing confirmed. “What you need to do is not to keep dwelling on those ‘feelings,’ but to distract yourself and do what you’re supposed to do.”
“Play games, mess with your figurines, or find some real work to do. Over time, that ‘disorder’ will naturally disappear.”
Jiang Linmu nodded vigorously. “I… I understand! Ge! I will! I’ll go play games! I’m going right now!”
He looked like he’d finally found an escape hatch, turning around to run.
“Wait.” Jiang Qing stopped him.
Jiang Linmu froze and looked back nervously.
Jiang Qing looked at him, his tone softening. “Remember, I am your Ge. At any time, if there’s something you don’t understand or you feel ‘not right,’ you can come directly to me. Don’t bottle it up and make yourself sick.”
Jiang Linmu looked at Jiang Qing, his eyes reddening again.
“Mm!” He nodded heavily. “Thanks, Ge!”
Watching Jiang Linmu scramble away, Jiang Qing sat back down on the sofa and sighed softly.
Kids really are a hassle.
He hoped that explanation would truly help the silly brat get his head straight.
Suddenly, Jiang Qing thought of Su Lin.
Su Lin’s long absence after the drugging incident felt unusual to him.
That kid was deep and certainly didn’t have thin skin; he wouldn’t stay away just because he was “ashamed” of an accident. Unless… he was plotting something else.
Jiang Qing had Qin Zhiyan keep a secret eye on Su Lin’s movements. The feedback indicated that Su Lin had been keeping a low profile lately, mostly staying in his own apartment and occasionally going to his part-time job. Nothing unusual could be found.
Jiang Qing temporarily set aside his suspicions and focused his main energy on investigating Xu Xunchen.
Progress was faster than expected. Qin Zhiyan and Chi Jiong provided several valuable leads. Hidden capital chains and interpersonal networks gradually surfaced, pointing toward a small local interest group led by the Sun family that had been entrenched for years.
They seemed quite dissatisfied with the Jiang family’s expansion in various fields in recent years. They wanted to use this “recognition banquet scandal” to give the Jiang family a warning, and perhaps even take the opportunity to destabilize the Jiang family from within for profit.
Just as Jiang Qing was preparing to close the net and give this arrogant little group a lesson they wouldn’t forget, an unexpected visitor broke the surface-level peace of the Jiang residence.
That afternoon, Jiang Qing was in the study handling documents when the butler came up to announce: “Young Master Su is here.”
Jiang Qing’s hand holding the fountain pen paused.
Su Lin? He’s finally showing his face?
“Let him up.” Jiang Qing put down his pen and leaned back against the chair.
A few minutes later, there was a soft knock on the study door.
“Come in.”
The door opened, and Su Lin walked in.
After not seeing him for a while, he seemed to have grown a bit thinner. He was wearing a simple white shirt and black trousers. His aura remained clean and gentle, but in those eyes looking at Jiang Qing, there was a bit more stillness and an indescribable complexity.
He closed the door behind him and walked to the desk, bowing slightly. “Gege.”
Jiang Qing looked up, studying him calmly. “Something the matter?”
Su Lin pursed his lips but met Jiang Qing’s gaze.
“Gege, I know you’ve been investigating Xu Xunchen and the Sun family lately.”
Jiang Qing raised an eyebrow, neither confirming nor denying.
“I found some things that might be useful to you.” As Su Lin spoke, he took a USB drive out of his bag and placed it on the desk in front of Jiang Qing.
“Inside are detailed records of Xu Xunchen’s funds transferred to several overseas shell companies through underground banks over the past six months, as well as recordings and photos of several secret meetings he had with a Sun family manager in charge of ‘grey’ operations. There is also a preliminary plan the Sun family made to use this ‘scandal’ to further damage the Jiang family’s reputation.”
Jiang Qing’s gaze landed on the small USB drive.
He had found many clues himself, but the things Su Lin provided were clearly more direct and lethal. Especially that plan—if it was real, the value was immeasurable.
“How did you get these?” Jiang Qing asked.
Su Lin lowered his eyes. “I knew some people back in B City, and I have some special channels. After Xu Xunchen did those things at the banquet, I looked into him. I didn’t expect it to lead back to the Sun family.”
He spoke lightly, but Jiang Qing knew that someone who could obtain this level of information was anything but simple.
He thought of the “Mystery” bar Chi Jiong mentioned and Zhou Ciqing.
“Why give these to me now?”
Su Lin looked up. “Before, I was afraid Gege would think I had ulterior motives and wouldn’t trust me. I also wanted to verify the authenticity and value of these things.” He paused, his voice dropping low.
“Also… after that night, I didn’t know how to face Gege.”
He finally mentioned that night.
Jiang Qing looked at the testing gaze in his eyes and remained silent for a moment.
“I’ll take these. I’ll verify them.”
“You did well. As for that night, I told you—it’s over. You are part of the Jiang family; you don’t need to hide from anyone for that.”
Su Lin’s eyes brightened slightly, as if he’d been granted a reprieve or perhaps a silent permission.
He nodded gently. “Thank you, Gege.”
“Anything else?” Jiang Qing asked.
Su Lin hesitated, then as if summoning his courage, he took out a small, exquisite velvet box and pushed it gently toward Jiang Qing.
“This… I happened to see it a while ago and thought it suited Gege.”
“It’s nothing expensive, just a small token of my heart. Thank you for helping me and taking care of me that night, Gege.”
Jiang Qing looked at the deep blue velvet box but didn’t touch it immediately. He looked up at Su Lin.
Su Lin was also looking at him.
He reached out and picked up the box.
“Mm, I’ll take it,” Jiang Qing said. “Go back and rest.”
“Okay.” Su Lin bowed slightly, turned, and left the study with a light step.
Jiang Qing sat in his chair, his fingertips tracing the surface of the box.
