Chapter 202: You Are My Medicine (End)
Chen Ni was not one to dally. Since things had reached this point, he said no more. He lit a cigarette downstairs at the casino before heading back to Hong Kong.
That evening, as Xiao Ji was processing documents in the lounge above the casino, Chen Yinnian was lying on the sofa playing games on his phone.
Xiao Ji’s assistant suddenly came in and said to Xiao Ji:
“The gentleman surnamed Wen jumped from a building after owing forty million at the Zhao family’s casino.”
Xiao Ji said he understood and waved him out.
Once the assistant was gone, Chen Yinnian sat up from the sofa.
“Which Mr. Wen? Was it that classmate of yours?”
Xiao Ji gave a hum. “You still remember him?”
Chen Yinnian raised an eyebrow. “How could he suddenly owe so much and jump? Didn’t he have no money before? Where did he get the money to gamble?”
The matter was too complex to explain.
Xiao Ji couldn’t tell Chen Yinnian that he had lent Wen Jie a sum of money just to let him turn things around, only to have him fall into the abyss in this sinful city of debauchery.
So, Xiao Ji only said, “Greed is insatiable. You haven’t just arrived in Jinsha today; this method of escaping debt is not unheard of.”
Those words were true, yet Chen Yinnian still felt something was off.
Furthermore, Xiao Ji had clearly said back then that he could lend that man a sum. Why hadn’t Wen Jie come to find Xiao Ji again when he was at a dead end?
But he was a clever man.
Since Wen Jie was already dead, it meant that Xiao Ji had allowed the subsequent events to happen regardless of whether he knew about them or not. That indicated Xiao Ji cared neither about the person nor whether he lived or died.
Since Xiao Ji didn’t care, there was no need for him to probe further.
To put it bluntly, the man was dead; why bother asking for trouble.
This incident was like a minor interlude in their monotonous lives, causing no ripples between the two.
Xiao Ji’s efficiency was high as always.
Soon, the documents Chen Yinnian had signed were fully processed.
Just like that, Chen Yinnian leaped to become the largest shareholder in the Xiao family business.
Afterward, Xiao Ji took those things and went back to the Chen residence with Chen Yinnian.
After giving Father Chen a difficult time, they processed the voluntary guardianship, and Xiao Ji officially became Chen Yinnian’s guardian.
For the first three years, Chen Yinnian’s illness remained somewhat unstable, with occasional relapses where he was either energetic or despondent.
However, none of those situations were severe; at least they were within the range he could control with effort.
Afterward, Xiao Ji spent a vast amount of time accompanying Chen Yinnian to many places.
If Chen Yinnian liked a place, they stayed longer. If not, they stayed for a few days before moving to the next destination.
As Chen Yinnian’s condition grew increasingly stable, he gradually ceased all medication.
Xiao mother was unable to accept Xiao Ji’s actions at first, but since she couldn’t control him and lacked the energy to do so, she eventually focused all her attention on her younger son and completely gave up on Xiao Ji.
Perhaps because Chen Yinnian had taken too much medication in his youth, he showed no signs during his prime, but in his twilight years, his memory began to decline sharply.
At first, he would only forget things he had said.
Later, he would completely forget what he had eaten for breakfast by lunch time.
Eventually, he couldn’t even remember Xiao Ji.
Every day after waking up, he would look at Xiao Ji with a stranger’s gaze and ask him:
“Who are you?”
Xiao Ji had long been prepared for this.
He had grown used to being forgotten over and over by his lover, only to begin the process of getting to know each other again.
Day after day, he never tired of playing out the scene of meeting Chen Yinnian for the first time.
Until one night, Chen Yinnian woke up in the middle of the night and suddenly said to Xiao Ji:
“I seem to have forgotten some things, yet I also seem to only remember some things.”
Xiao Ji opened his eyes and looked at Chen Yinnian beside him.
“What have you forgotten? And what do you remember?”
Chen Yinnian thought for a long time. “I should know you, but I’ve forgotten how we met.”
“I remember… a long time ago, I had a lover.”
Xiao Ji lay on his side, looking at his face.
“He loves you now, too.”
Chen Yinnian looked back at Xiao Ji. “Is it you?”
Xiao Ji stroked his cheek, which was no longer as handsome as it was back then. He kissed his forehead and said:
“It’s me.”
Outside the window, a small brown-backed shrike watched the two inside. It tilted its head, flapped its wings, and flew onto the eaves.
Chen Yinnian stared at Xiao Ji. After a long while, he began to smile and whispered:
“I remember now. I’m sorry.”
Xiao Ji didn’t know if Chen Yinnian had truly remembered or if he would never remember again. He only tapped the corner of his lip gently.
“No need to apologize.”
Chen Yinnian gripped Xiao Ji’s wrist and kissed his fingertips.
“If there’s another chance, next time, let it be me who takes care of you.”
Xiao Ji didn’t mind such things, but he would always take Chen Yinnian’s words to heart.
He watched as Chen Yinnian closed his eyes and felt Chen Yinnian’s heart rate slowing down.
When only the sound of one heart beating remained in the spacious and silent room, Xiao Ji reached out to embrace Chen Yinnian. He stroked his hair and closed his own eyes.
……………………
Inside a dilapidated, tiny, and dark room.
The curtains were drawn tight.
The room was filled with boxes of instant rice and cup noodles, and several empty beer cans rolled on the floor.
“Now broadcasting an emergency notice. Yesterday afternoon at 3:42 PM, a female corpse was recovered from the riverbank at Central Park…”
The radio in the room crackled with static. Before the host could finish, it ceased to work.
Xiao Ji opened his eyes and found himself lying on a sofa again.
Unlike the last time, this sofa was narrow and crowded, with several sunken spots beneath his body.
The ceiling was already yellowed, and a single old-fashioned light bulb hung alone in the center.
Clearly, the original body’s family situation was quite poor.
Xiao Ji was about to sit up to gather his thoughts when he realized his left leg seemed to have no sensation.
He frowned, pulled back the thin blanket, and saw his two legs lying there normally.
He then pulled up the left leg of his sweatpants and couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow.
The lower leg beneath those sweatpants was made of metal.
It was a prosthetic limb.
Meanwhile, a pair of crutches stood by the sofa.
Clearly, the original body’s limbs were not all intact.
Xiao Ji lowered his pant leg, his face cold.
[037!]
037 gave an awkward laugh. [Didn’t the Phoenix say he wanted to take care of you? I thought this setup was quite good.]
Xiao Ji didn’t speak, but he was clearly not in a pleasant mood.
037 hurriedly tried to smooth things over.
[The missing limb isn’t important. How about you learn about the mission background and details first?]

This arc ending was especially bittersweet. One of my biggest fears is one of my loved ones or myself becoming afflicted with alzheimers or dementia in old age. I can’t express how much this arc and story has captured my appreciation. Thanks for the updates~
