Chapter 201: You Are My Medicine (26)
The risks of night skydiving were far greater than during the day.
After negotiating with the staff and signing a contract, Xiao Ji only brought one tandem parachute equipment set and a pilot.
Chen Yinnian didn’t dare say a word throughout the process. It wasn’t until the helicopter began to take off and he saw that there were indeed only Xiao Ji and himself in the cabin that he swallowed hard.
“Brother, have you actually earned a skydiving license?”
Xiao Ji looked at him. “No.”
Chen Yinnian swallowed again. “Then… is skydiving a hobby of yours?”
Xiao Ji’s tone remained flat. “No.”
The wind was howling in their ears, making it difficult to even breathe.
Panic began to set in for Chen Yinnian. He shouted, “Then when was the last time you went skydiving?!”
The helicopter hovered at an altitude of four thousand meters, ceasing its ascent.
Xiao Ji organized the equipment, pulled Chen Yinnian into his arms, and prepared all the safety measures. Before Chen Yinnian could even react, he leaped out of the cabin door with him.
Instantly, Chen Yinnian was enveloped by a violent sensation of weightlessness.
Then, he heard Xiao Ji shout in his ear:
“There was no last time. This is the first!”
This wasn’t Chen Yinnian’s first skydive.
But it was undoubtedly the most terrifying one for him.
First, he wasn’t currently in a manic phase; his mental state wasn’t that exuberant, and he wasn’t that confident.
Second, the entire process was led by Xiao Ji, a skydiver with absolutely zero experience.
They were falling.
The wind screeched around them.
At one point, Chen Yinnian felt he was about to suffocate.
Visibility was poor at night, and he couldn’t even tell where they were landing.
His heart rate had almost moved up to his throat, feeling as if it might pop out of his mouth at any moment.
There was nothing he could do except close his eyes and scream in Xiao Ji’s embrace:
“I was wrong! Brother! I f*cking won’t ever do it again!”
Amidst Chen Yinnian’s confessions, the parachute behind Xiao Ji finally deployed with a thump.
Their descent speed slowed rapidly, yet Chen Yinnian’s heart continued to beat like a drum.
By the time the two had landed steadily, Chen Yinnian still hadn’t recovered; his legs were trembling uncontrollably.
Xiao Ji calmly began to detach the equipment. As the staff waiting at the landing site approached to offer water and gather the gear, Xiao Ji took a step forward, only to hear Chen Yinnian speak:
“Brother, I can’t walk.”
Xiao Ji stopped and looked back at him. “What’s wrong? Weren’t you very brave?”
Chen Yinnian’s Adam’s apple bobbed. He refused to admit he was truly scared today. With a sudden flash of inspiration, he said to Xiao Ji:
“My foot hurts.”
His attention hadn’t been focused on it before, so he hadn’t felt any significant pain.
But once those words were out, the sensation of pain suddenly became acute.
Xiao Ji frowned. “Did you sprain your ankle?”
Chen Yinnian shook his head. “I think it was pierced by ceramic shards.”
Xiao Ji hadn’t been aware of this, but hearing Chen Yinnian say it, he speculated that the injury might have occurred while he was still at the Chen residence.
Without a word, he scooped the boy up in a princess carry and headed toward the exit of the club.
The skydiving club was in a remote location. There were no hospitals nearby, and only a few pharmacies remained open.
Xiao Ji exchanged currency at an ATM in a convenience store at the club entrance and bought medicine and gauze.
Throughout the process, Chen Yinnian had his arms wrapped around Xiao Ji’s neck and his cheek buried against his shoulder, showing no intention of letting go.
Xiao Ji simply held him, completing the various transactions with one hand.
After leaving the pharmacy, Xiao Ji placed Chen Yinnian on a roadside bench and knelt beside him.
“Which one?”
Chen Yinnian kicked his right leg.
Xiao Ji removed his shoe, seeing bloodstains blooming through his clean little white sock.
It seemed it had been there for some time, as the color was somewhat dark.
“Does it hurt now?” He looked up at Chen Yinnian.
Chen Yinnian shook his head. “A little bit, but not much.”
Xiao Ji was afraid the wound might be stuck to the fabric, which would cause pain when pulled. He was very cautious as he removed the sock.
But sure enough, halfway through, Chen Yinnian let out a small hiss.
Xiao Ji’s hand gripped his ankle, and soon that wave of pain seemed to be soothed.
When the wound was fully exposed, Xiao Ji still frowned.
It wasn’t particularly deep or shallow, but it hadn’t been treated in a timely manner. Although it had partially scabbed over, it hadn’t fully solidified. Clearly, blood had been seeped out every time Chen Yinnian had exerted force during the interval.
Xiao Ji looked up at Chen Yinnian again.
Knowing he was in the wrong, Chen Yinnian didn’t dare speak.
Xiao Ji didn’t scold him further. He simply cleaned the wound and, after carefully ensuring no ceramic shards remained, applied medicine and meticulously bandaged it.
The evening breeze was warm and humid as it brushed over Chen Yinnian’s ankle. He looked at the top of Xiao Ji’s head and asked:
“Brother, tell me, if my illness never gets better, can you still stay with me for a lifetime?”
Normally, Xiao Ji would have given him a definite answer.
But currently, Xiao Ji himself was feeling irritable. He only said:
“Don’t ask such obvious nonsense again.”
Chen Yinnian began to grin foolishly. He used his gauze-wrapped foot to nudge Xiao Ji, saying with a smile:
“What should I do? I love you so much.”
Xiao Ji turned around and crouched in front of Chen Yinnian, tapping his shoulder to signal him to climb on.
As he carried Chen Yinnian on his back and waited for a taxi by the roadside, Xiao Ji said:
“That’s what I deserve.”
The two unexpectedly stayed overnight in a foreign land. The next day, Xiao Ji took Chen Yinnian back to Jinsha.
Since both Xiao Ji and Chen Yinnian had blacklisted the other three members of the Chen family, after they had rested for a night, they found Chen Ni waiting for them at the casino entrance on the third day.
Seeing a safe and sound Chen Yinnian, Chen Ni breathed a complete sigh of relief.
But seeing Chen Ni, Chen Yinnian instinctively shrank behind Xiao Ji.
Chen Ni was just about to say something when Xiao Ji punched him without warning.
Xiao Ji’s punch sent Chen Ni’s head snapping to the side. It took him a long moment to recover. He looked at Xiao Ji and wiped the corner of his mouth, saying nothing.
Chen Yinnian gasped and tugged at Xiao Ji’s sleeve.
“Don’t be angry anymore, Brother.”
Xiao Ji stood tall. He asked Chen Yinnian, “Do you want to talk to him?”
After a moment’s thought, Chen Yinnian shook his head. He said to Chen Ni:
“Go back, Brother. I’m fine, and I have nothing I want to say to you. I’ve caused a lot of trouble for you and the family over the years. From now on, I won’t be coming back unless there’s a reason.”
Chen Ni opened his mouth and looked at Chen Yinnian.
“Have things been made clear?”
Chen Yinnian nodded.
Chen Ni was silent for a moment. “Have you thought it through?”
Chen Yinnian nodded again.
Chen Yinnian knew better than anyone how everyone truly felt about him.
As an elder brother, Chen Ni had done his best.
But everyone is selfish at heart. Chen Ni had his own life and things he wanted. It was understandable that he’d worry about Xiao Ji aiming for the Chen family’s assets.
In all honesty, Chen Ni had been good to him over the years.
Chen Yinnian also believed that even if Xiao Ji really had deceived him, even if Father Chen gave up on him, Chen Ni would always find a way to try his best to keep him alive.
For Chen Yinnian, that was enough.
So, as they parted, Chen Yinnian still gave Chen Ni a hug. He didn’t say much else, only one thing:
“Xiao Ji will be good to me. He treats me better than anyone else does. Don’t worry, Brother.”
