Chapter 41: If You Don’t Want to Draw Attention
In front of the empty window, Chen Wei was held firmly in place by Zhou Sijin. His hands, clutching the curtain fabric, tightened slightly.
From behind him came Zhou Sijin’s demonic whisper.
“I knew you’d like it here.”
Chen Wei gritted his teeth as he said his name.
“Zhou Sijin.”
“Shh!” Zhou Sijin’s chin rested entirely on Chen Wei’s shoulder. “Unless you want to draw everyone’s attention.”
At those words, Chen Wei indeed fell silent and stopped speaking. Zhou Sijin’s long-term emotional stability had caused him to forget the inherent violence and ruthlessness in the man’s bones.
Chen Wei slowly closed his eyes. At this point, the method of simply drawing a line with Zhou Sijin clearly wouldn’t work. To leave Zhou Sijin’s sight unscathed would be even more difficult. Overly rebellious words and actions would only further fuel Zhou Sijin’s rage.
Chen Wei was incredibly grateful that this happened tonight, as it allowed him to see Zhou Sijin’s true nature in advance. Otherwise, if he only discovered something was wrong on the day he tried to leave, it might have been too late.
During the latter half of the night, Chen Wei fully utilized his advantage as an actor. He played the contrast—appearing as though he were forced to cooperate out of fear—nearly to perfection.
Zhou Sijin, lost in his own pleasure, didn’t suspect a thing.
From the living room to the kitchen, and finally the bedroom, wherever they went, the robot followed. Though he didn’t want to admit it, the reactions given by his body were impossible to fake.
In this play, they went from initial resistance, confrontation, and struggle, to finally sinking into the abyss together.
When Chen Wei woke up the next morning, Zhou Sijin was already gone.
Chen Wei got out of bed with some difficulty. He grabbed a pair of pajamas from the closet and threw them on before slowly making his way to the front door to open it.
The visitor was Han Chi. Quite unexpectedly, Jiang Chuan was following behind him.
Chen Wei’s gaze drifted back and forth between the two of them for a moment before he looked away. He still couldn’t figure out when these two, who had once been like fire and water, had become so close.
He invited them inside and turned to pour some tea. His unusual gait immediately caught the attention of the two men behind him. They exchanged a sidelong glance, then scanned the mess in the living room before mutually choosing to remain silent.
When Chen Wei returned with the water, he saw the two of them sitting stiffly on the sofa. As he handed them the cups, he explained softly:
“Zhou Sijin isn’t here.”
The moment those words left his mouth, he heard both of them let out a long, synchronized sigh of relief.
Amused by the sheer power of Zhou Sijin’s name, Chen Wei’s lips curled into a faint, mocking smile. He sat down and got straight to the point.
“What is it that brings you here so early?”
The moment he brought up business, Han Chi’s original nervousness was instantly replaced by a surge of excitement and exhilaration. He looked at Chen Wei, his wide eyes full of fervor and disbelief.
“A-Wei, did you hear? Xu Cheng has been arrested!”
“Mm.”
The expression on Chen Wei’s face wasn’t particularly surprised. He only asked a shallow question:
“When did it happen?”
“Huh?” Han Chi was startled by his response. “Did you already guess he would be caught?”
Chen Wei looked at him, neither denying it nor answering directly.
“Setting aside the fact that hosting a drug-fueled sex party is a crime, do you think Xu Cheng, as Zhang Chen’s partner, would be unaware of the things Zhang Chen was hiding in that hotel?”
The incident with Zhang Chen had caused a massive stir, and no one would be suicidal enough to try and protect him. Given Zhang Chen’s “if I’m going down, I’m taking everyone with me” personality, once he knew he was beyond saving, he would definitely spill everything to the police before he went behind bars.
Chen Wei shifted his gaze to Jiang Chuan, who had remained silent since entering the house.
“You…?”
Jiang Chuan immediately stood up from the sofa with a respectful posture. He waved his hands and gave Chen Wei an honest look.
“Brother Chen Wei, I didn’t use drugs.”
Chen Wei raised an eyebrow. Though he was surprised by the rapid shift in Jiang Chuan’s attitude toward him, he also knew it was unlikely that Jiang Chuan was involved in that part of the mess. Otherwise, he wouldn’t be standing here unscathed with Han Chi.
Han Chi, listening to Chen Wei’s analysis, nodded in agreement. However, when he looked up, he saw Chen Wei was still staring at Jiang Chuan. He tugged at Jiang Chuan’s clothes to tell him to sit down and spoke up on his behalf.
“I only learned from Jiang Chuan’s call this morning that Xu Cheng had been taken by the police.”
According to Jiang Chuan, he had originally wanted to call Chen Wei directly. But the previous night, they had seen Zhou Sijin follow Chen Wei into his home. Combined with the terrifying, ice-cold look Zhou Sijin had given them at the hotel, they had been scared out of their wits. After thinking it over, Jiang Chuan called Han Chi first and came here with him.
Han Chi set down his water cup and tried to shift the subject. “A-Wei, I think Xu Cheng being arrested is a good thing for us.”
Without Xu Cheng’s interference, their path in the entertainment industry would likely be much smoother.
Chen Wei shook his head slightly, his voice calm and rippleless. “Not necessarily.”
Han Chi instinctively exchanged a look with Jiang Chuan, then turned back, confused.
“Why do you say that?”
Chen Wei sighed, not knowing how to explain it to them just yet. He forced his aching body up from the sofa.
“I’ll go wash up first. Then, the three of us will head to the company together.”
