Chapter 43: I Have Absolute Confidence in You
Du Moqing didn’t know where Chen Wei got the nerve to come to his office and cause trouble. However, the fact that Chen Wei could set such an elaborate trap to ensnare both Zhang Chen and Xu Cheng together was proof enough of his deep, calculating mind.
He had no time to waste on such a pointless verbal dispute with Chen Wei.
Sitting up straight and regaining his usual overbearing aura as a CEO, Du Moqing brushed off some non-existent dust from his sleeve and asked, “Speak. What exactly did you come here for today?”
Since Du Moqing had already shown weakness, Chen Wei didn’t plan to press him too hard. He casually tossed a bank card onto the desk in front of him.
“There are twenty million yuan on this card. It’s for my breach of contract penalty,” Chen Wei stated.
“A breach of contract penalty?” Du Moqing narrowed his eyes. “You want to terminate your contract with the company?”
Chen Wei tilted his head slightly, neither confirming nor denying it.
Suddenly, a cold sneer escaped Du Moqing’s lips. He pushed the bank card back toward Chen Wei, mocking his naivety. “You think a mere twenty million is enough to get your termination papers from me? You’ve gone mad dreaming of such a fairy tale, haven’t you?”
Rejected, Chen Wei didn’t get angry. He merely shook his head calmly and corrected him:
“It’s not my termination contract. It’s ours.”
“Ours?” Du Moqing almost thought his ears were playing tricks on him.
Chen Wei nodded, confirming his words. “Yes. Ours.”
The air fell silent for a moment before a burst of laughter erupted from Du Moqing. He looked at Chen Wei as if he were an idiot. He was now deeply skeptical—with this level of IQ, how on earth had Chen Wei managed to play those two fools, Xu Cheng and Zhang Chen, into prison?
But very quickly, Du Moqing stopped laughing.
Chen Wei had produced a phone from somewhere. The smile vanished from Du Moqing’s face as he stared at Chen Wei. “What is the meaning of this?”
Chen Wei tucked the phone back into his coat pocket with a composed expression. “This is Zhang Chen’s phone.”
Du Moqing’s eyes widened instantly.
Ignoring the reaction, Chen Wei continued to provoke him. “There are quite a few videos recorded by Zhang Chen inside. I imagine the media and the paparazzi would be very interested.”
Du Moqing knew better than anyone what kind of content was in those videos. If they were ever leaked, the entirety of Xingyao Media would likely go down with them.
However, Du Moqing was a CEO after all, and he quickly caught a loophole in Chen Wei’s words. “It’s just a phone. Why should I believe you?”
What if Chen Wei had just grabbed a random phone to bluff him?
Faced with the questioning, Chen Wei simply stood up. Looking down at Du Moqing, his tone remained peaceful from beginning to end.
“The phone Zhang Chen used isn’t a secret. It’s not hard to find out if you really want to. But whether you want to make this deal with me is entirely up to you, President Du.”
“If you’ve made up your mind, have someone send the termination contracts to my email within three days. At that time, I will naturally delete everything in those videos.”
It was only now, as Chen Wei held him by the throat with this threat, that Du Moqing finally understood why the man had been able to effortlessly design a scheme to send Xu Cheng and Zhang Chen to prison.
A petty person who used any means necessary to achieve his goals was an extremely terrifying individual.
Having been outmaneuvered due to a moment of negligence, Du Moqing’s voice was filled with intense resentment. “How can I trust that you’ll actually delete the videos after you get the contracts?”
Chen Wei reached out and pushed the bank card back to Du Moqing, his expression placid. “If I truly wanted to deceive you, I wouldn’t have brought the penalty money to trade with you in the first place.”
With that, Chen Wei rose and left. As the door closed, he didn’t give Du Moqing a single chance to react or regret.
Barring any accidents, Du Moqing would definitely send their termination contracts within these three days.
As for the videos…
Back at the hotel that day, he had already deleted every single bit of the content.
Sometimes, there were benefits to dealing with smart people. A word to the wise was enough, and the rest was left to their own imaginations.
The moment Chen Wei stepped out of the office, Han Chi and Jiang Chuan, who had been waiting nearby, swarmed around him.
“How did it go?” Han Chi asked anxiously.
A good-natured smile tugged at the corners of Chen Wei’s lips. Looking at the two in front of him, he gave a smile that was truly from the heart for the first time.
“We can start preparing for our own exclusive studio,” he said.
Du Moqing moved quickly. At the same time he sent the contracts, Chen Wei recorded a screen-capture video of his empty phone album and sent it over.
However, Du Moqing was clearly still uneasy. “You didn’t keep a backup, did you?”
Regarding his suspicion, Chen Wei only sneered and intentionally replied:
“Whether I have a backup in my hands depends entirely on you, President Du.”
Did he really think he was easy-tempered?
Perhaps the threat worked, as Du Moqing didn’t dare reply again.
During this time, Chen Wei received the resources and scripts sent by Zhou Sijin. Treating it as if he’d been bitten by a dog that night and following the principle of not letting good things go to waste, Chen Wei bundled them all up and sent them to Han Chi.
He left all the studio matters to Han Chi and Jiang Chuan.
With that settled, Chen Wei could finally free up his hands to fulfill his original agreement with Zhang Quan.
Zhang Quan arrived with a script in hand. The moment he entered the restaurant, he didn’t waste any words and handed the script to Chen Wei first.
“Read the general plot first.”
Chen Wei took it with both hands. It wasn’t until Zhang Quan sat down firmly in the opposite seat that Chen Wei lowered his head to look at the booklet.
The script was a historical political drama centered on themes of ambition and inspiration—a serious production (zhengju) aimed at winning awards. The general plot was as follows:
In an era where treacherous officials held sway, the Emperor was incompetent, and rebels used the Son of Heaven to command the lords, seizing the empire that originally belonged to the royal family. The opening scene depicted a massacre of the royal scions by a traitorous official. Amidst the chaos, a young prince was secretly smuggled out of the palace.
With traitors controlling the court, the commoners lived in abject misery. Over a decade later, the prince—now aware of his lineage—begins a five-year war of vengeance against the usurpers.
The prince gathering troops and winning over the hearts of his father’s old subordinates was the most crucial arc of the film. This segment was mainly to portray the hardships and struggles of the prince as he lived a life on the edge of a blade, crawling through the mud.
The obstacles from the traitors and the deliberate difficulties posed by the old guard served as the protagonist’s growth steps, all flavored with the eerie and mysterious elements of Miao territory gu sorcery.
In the final end, the prince would raise his sword and decapitate the treacherous official amidst the rising sun.
The movie ended there.
Chen Wei closed the script and looked up. A faint spark of excitement lingered in Zhang Quan’s expectant eyes.
“How is it?”
Chen Wei nodded. As a drama meant for awards, the script was indeed impeccable.
Zhang Quan couldn’t wait; his body leaned forward slightly in excitement. “So, when do you plan to join the crew?”
“Hmm?” Chen Wei was stunned by the question. “Don’t I need to do a screen test first?”
“Hai! What screen test!” Zhang Quan waved his hand, explaining with total indifference, “I’ve practically worn out the copies of those dramas you acted in at home.”
Patting his chest, Zhang Quan guaranteed:
“I have absolute confidence in you.”
Translator’s Note:
- Zhengju (正劇): Often translated as “Serious Drama.” In the C-drama world, these are high-budget, realistic, and historically or politically accurate productions, often contrasted with “Idol Dramas” (which are more about romance and aesthetics).
- Gu Sorcery (蠱術): A legendary venom-based magic from southern Chinese folklore (specifically the Miao people). It usually involves poisonous insects.
- “Ours”: Chen Wei is including Han Chi and Jiang Chuan in his exit deal. Talk about a loyal boss!
