Part 2
Jiang Chenyan glanced at him and lightly patted his arm, his voice softening. “Don’t worry, it’s fine.”
Xiao Yi’s heart stirred, and he understood something. His tensed nerves relaxed slightly.
Jiang Chenyan led the way. Reaching the door, he first pushed it open a crack. A thick, pungent, bitter smell surged out, mixed with a faint metallic scent of blood that stung the nose.
The Alphas behind him immediately darkened their expressions, instinctively knitting their brows.
“I just brewed the medicine; the smell is a bit strong.”
Jiang Chenyan explained.
He pushed the door wide open. The scene inside hit them, and everyone was stunned.
On the bed, half of Ji Xuan’s face had rotted into a mess. Dark red pus seeped from his skin, clinging to yellowish bandages. Some parts of the bandages were soaked through, with murky liquid slowly oozing from the edges. It was gruesome and terrifying. He only had a faint thread of breath left, looking as if he could stop breathing at any second.
Jiang Chenyan blocked the doorway with his body, his brow slightly furrowed. “Don’t go in. The virus is extremely contagious; you’ll catch it if you get too close.”
Everyone froze. This disease really was contagious.
Qi Bai lowered his eyes and was silent for a moment. After a long while, he looked up and said deeply, “It seems he is indeed badly injured. How about this: we’ll stay here for a few days. I’ll immediately contact the higher-ups to send professional medical staff to see if he can be saved.”
Hearing the words “stay for a few days,” a flash of mockery crossed Jiang Chenyan’s eyes, and he almost laughed out loud. He had just stated that Ji Xuan wouldn’t last two days. The Alliance Headquarters was far away; even if they sent people, it would take at least three days. Those words clearly meant they wanted to wait until the end and watch Ji Xuan breathe his last with their own eyes.
Qi Bai turned to Xiao Yi. “We will pay at market rates. Can we book a few rooms?”
Xiao Yi remained silent with his eyes lowered, his fingertips clenched. Just as he was about to refuse, Qi Bai saw through his hesitation and added deeply, “Don’t worry. We’ll only stay for a few days and won’t cause trouble. If there’s progress in saving him, it’ll be good for you too.”
Jiang Chenyan knew Xiao Yi was caught in a dilemma. He spoke flatly, “Boss, since they’re friends of this patient and sincerely want to help, let them stay for a few days.”
At these words, both Qi Bai and Xie Huaijin were taken aback. They hadn’t expected Jiang Chenyan to speak up for them.
Jiang Chenyan didn’t panic. Based on the timing, Shen Shiyue should arrive by tomorrow morning. Initially, he thought Shen Shiyue would send subordinates to handle the handover, but he hadn’t expected him to come in person.
Given Qi Bai and Xie Huaijin’s temperaments, they wouldn’t openly confront Shen Shiyue then; they would only be hypocritically polite.
Ji Xuan wouldn’t be in danger for now.
…
The night grew deep, and the surroundings were so quiet that only the soft sound of the night wind brushing against the window lattices could be heard.
Jiang Chenyan sat on the sofa on the first floor, a thick book in his hands, reading intently. He was always thorough in his acting, specifically choosing a heavy medical tome with complex terminology on the cover to look professional. However, most of the content was obscure and difficult to understand; he was just putting on a show.
Suddenly, the other side of the sofa dipped slightly, and a shadow loomed over him.
A large, well-defined hand suddenly reached out and snatched the book from Jiang Chenyan’s hands.
Jiang Chenyan looked up, a hint of irritability rising in his heart.
Qi Bai’s eyes were incredibly dark. He tossed the book casually onto the armrest and asked deeply, “Were you a doctor before?”
Jiang Chenyan gave a flat response: “Sort of.”
“Are you a friend of the Boss?” Qi Bai asked again.
Jiang Chenyan nodded. “En.”
Qi Bai felt a bit annoyed, but he also wanted to laugh, his lips twitching.
It was one thing if he didn’t laugh, but this smile was somewhat eerie. Almost no one had seen Qi Bai smile, and Jiang Chenyan was no exception.
“Is perfunctory talk all you’re capable of?”
Jiang Chenyan wasn’t one to indulge him and stood up directly. “My speech is perfunctory. If you don’t like it, don’t come over and ask.”
Qi Bai was speechless.
This person is quite rude.
As he left, Jiang Chenyan leaned down to scoop up the book from the sofa armrest.
Qi Bai sat alone on the sofa. The swelling pain in his temples felt like fine needles pricking his nerves over and over.
After an unknown amount of time, he finally stood up and walked outside. the night wind carried a bit of coolness against his face, slightly dispelling some of his frustration.
As if possessed, Qi Bai pulled out a cigarette and lit it. The harsh smoke entered his throat, making him cough a few times.
Actually, Qi Bai almost never touched cigarettes and had no interest in them. In his memory, Jiang Chenyan seemed to smoke often. For some reason, after Jiang Chenyan died, the number of times he smoked gradually increased.
Qi Bai raised his hand to take his equipment from his pocket to arrange the follow-up matters, only to find his pocket was empty. He then realized that his light-brain equipment had been left in the room upstairs.
His brow furrowed and he let out an impatient “tsk,” turning back to head inside.
…
On the other side, a message suddenly popped up on Jiang Chenyan’s light-brain from Ye Qingyu.
[The location of the Association’s traitor has finally appeared. He’s near you. He stole many of our core files. Make sure to stop him and don’t let him link up with the mastermind.]
The Association always kept a strict eye on its personnel; most had tracking chips secretly implanted. However, this person was quite clever and discovered the chip, carrying a jammer that hid his tracks for a long time. Only now was he exposed.
Jiang Chenyan finished reading the message, and a murderous intent filled his eyes. He tapped out a reply.
[Near here? Send me the location. I’ll handle him.]
[Alright, be extremely careful.] Ye Qingyu replied instantly.
Jiang Chenyan said no more. He grabbed a black mask and put it on, pulling the brim of his hat low to cover most of his face. With a lithe leap, he vaulted out of the high window and headed straight toward the location.
Bull was huddled in the corner of an abandoned house. the light was so dim that only scattered moonlight leaked through the window. He death-gripped the encrypted storage device in his arms, his fingertips white, his heart racing, and cold sweat sliding down his temples.
He had to contact Admiral Qi as soon as possible and hand over the files. Otherwise, if the Association found him, death was the only outcome.
Bull’s light-brain had long since run out of power, and he couldn’t even open the communication interface. He scrambled through the abandoned room for a long time before finally finding an old charger. Luckily, the wiring wasn’t broken, but the charging speed was agonizingly slow. The indicator light flickered weakly, and he barely gained any power after a long time.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps came from the abandoned staircase, landing clearly on the empty floor.
Bull stiffened, cold sweat soaking his back. He didn’t even dare to breathe loudly as he scrambled toward a corner deep in the room.
Jiang Chenyan’s footsteps were like the rhythmic beats of a death drum, relentlessly following behind him. Every step landed on Bull’s heart.
Bull used all his strength to scramble forward, but the footsteps only drew closer. Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted an old wooden table with a very long tablecloth that could hide his body. Almost instinctively, he bent down and crawled under it.
Just as he curled up and before he could catch a breath, a black boot suddenly stopped at the edge of the table. Dust from the sole fell in a fine shower.
Bull was so scared cold sweat broke out.
At that moment, his light-brain finally powered on. His hands shook as he edited a message to Admiral Qi:
[Admiral, I have important files to give you.]
Bull’s whole body was trembling. Using the last bit of weak power, he urgently sent his location.
[He’s about to find me! Admiral!]
Qi Bai had just returned to his room when his light-brain vibrated urgently. The moment he opened the message, his brow furrowed. Without a second’s hesitation, he deployed part of his men to the location.
[Be more specific.]
Seeing that the message was read, Bull’s heart raced wildly. Driven by the instinct for survival, he risked his life to grab the secret files in his arms and hurriedly snapped a photo to transmit it. Every second was a race against the Grim Reaper.
One second before the transmission was successful.
The tablecloth was suddenly yanked away. In the dim light, Jiang Chenyan didn’t hesitate for a second. He raised his hand and fired once. The bullet precisely pierced Bull’s brow, and blood sprayed.
His eyes were wide, and he died with a lingering grievance.
Jiang Chenyan leaned down and deftly snatched the light-brain from the dead man’s hand. His fingertips moved with lightning speed. In the instant before the file was fully synchronized and the other party could read it, he precisely clicked “Retract.” The transmission interface on the screen cleared to zero.
On the other side, on Qi Bai’s light-brain, the transmission progress suddenly cut off. The half-popped-up file preview disappeared, leaving only a line of retraction notification.
He stared at the screen, his fingertips unconsciously tightening. His gaze darkened inch by inch.
Jiang Chenyan used his fingertips to swipe through the light-brain, glancing at the contact name Bull had for the other person; it was just a concise “q.” He casually took screenshots of all their past conversation records and saved them.
Just as he stood up to leave, he caught sight of several figures downstairs.
The reinforcements had arrived quickly; it seemed the mastermind’s location was very close to him.
Jiang Chenyan swept his gaze over them. There were several familiar faces in the crowd; if they weren’t Qi Bai’s confidants, they were Xie Huaijin’s subordinates. Combined with “q”—the first letter of Qi Bai’s name—everything made sense.
A cold, ruthless smirk curved Jiang Chenyan’s lips beneath his mask.
Without a second’s hesitation, he quickly pulled a high-explosive grenade from his waist. Pulling the ring and throwing it was done in one smooth motion. The grenade landed precisely in the center of the crowd. The next second, a massive explosion roared. Fire soared, rubble flew, and screams rose and fell. The area downstairs instantly turned into a sea of fire and overflowing blood.
In the chaos, one Alpha, covered in injuries, used his last bit of strength on the verge of death to pull out his light-brain and tremblingly snapped a photo.
The moment the message was sent successfully, the Alpha’s head lolled to the side, and he lost his breath completely.
No one expected the opponent to be this ruthless, throwing a bomb right away.
When Qi Bai received that photo, his expression went through a rare freeze.
In the image, a tall, slender black figure stood atop the ruins. His hat brim covered his face, and his almost indifferent eyes looked down at the camera with wantonness and a hint of provocation.
