Chapter 224: Mutation (22)
Bai Yinnian was the most special existence in [Divine Wings].
Because of his own condition, he did not need to participate in the army’s training.
Standard training methods could not improve his physique or abilities, and lack of training would not cause them to atrophy.
Therefore, as long as he wasn’t on a mission, Bai Yinnian’s life could be considered quite leisurely.
The next day, it wasn’t until noon that he was called away by a phone call.
Xiao Ji, as a family member, had no qualification or necessity to participate in the internal affairs of [Divine Wings].
After Bai Yinnian went out, he stayed at home to teach Xiao Cui how to read and write.
What was gratifying was that, as the darling of heaven who had enlightened intelligence, Xiao Cui was clearly much smarter than an ordinary child.
He quickly learned how to use a dictionary, and by the evening, he had drawn a picture.
In the drawing, there was a stick figure with wings and a stick figure in a wheelchair standing on either side, and in the middle was a small stick figure with a bird perched on its round head.
Xiao Ji stared at the drawing for a while, complimented him: “It’s not very ugly.”
He then removed the art picture of a similar size from the entry hall, threw it away, placed Xiao Cui’s drawing into the frame, and displayed it at the entrance.
After that, the big and small figures sat quietly in the living room, looking out the window, waiting for Bai Yinnian to return.
When Bai Yinnian returned, his expression wasn’t very good.
He walked in, changed his shoes first, then looked at the drawing at the entrance, and blindly said:
“Who drew this? It’s not bad.”
Xiao Ji sat in his wheelchair: “Xiao Cui drew it.”
Xiao Cui reached out his arms to Bai Yinnian.
But Bai Yinnian almost didn’t see him. He walked past Xiao Cui, went up to Xiao Ji, bent down to give him a hug, and kissed his cheek.
Afterward, he washed his hands at the kitchen sink, then returned to Xiao Cui, bent down, and picked up Xiao Cui.
He looked at Xiao Cui’s white, clean, round little face, swallowed, and bit Xiao Cui’s cheek, then placed him on the ground amidst Xiao Cui’s struggles.
Xiao Cui wiped the saliva off his face, turned around, and ran upstairs.
“What’s wrong? In a bad mood?”
Xiao Ji watched Bai Yinnian’s expression and asked.
Bai Yinnian took off his shirt, sat on the sofa with his bare chest, and said:
“Last night, the Third Team was on a mission in another district, and two team members went missing.”
Xiao Ji furrowed his brows, poured Bai Yinnian a glass of water, and told him to slow down.
Bai Yinnian drank half a glass of water: “The others couldn’t find their teammates and reported it, but the Third Team captain personally led people to find them, and ended up sending a distress signal to Mu Fan in the early morning.”
“And then?” Xiao Ji asked.
Bai Yinnian pursed his lips: “Mu Fan is a loyal person, but his desire to win is too strong, and he is very arrogant.”
“As soon as the distress signal came out, he went off on his own.”
Xiao Ji licked his canine tooth: “So, he went missing, too?”
Bai Yinnian hummed: “The signals sent out all went into the void. A meeting was held just now, and the commander forbade anyone else in the team from acting rashly.”
Bai Yinnian had returned, at least.
And currently, the missing people weren’t from Bai Yinnian’s own team.
But Xiao Ji still sensed Bai Yinnian’s anxiety and unease.
Xiao Ji watched Bai Yinnian, who had fallen silent and hadn’t spoken for a long time, and asked:
“Do you want to save them?”
Bai Yinnian was currently in agony.
Teammates were missing, their whereabouts unknown, life or death uncertain, but his superior forbade him from acting rashly.
He didn’t know how to answer Xiao Ji’s question.
Before he returned, he had a big argument with Zhao Yi, questioning Zhao Yi if Bai Yinnian died outside one day, would Zhao Yi also order his teammates not to recover his body.
Zhao Yi scolded Bai Yinnian for not considering the big picture, for being hot-headed. The current situation of those people was unknown; those who went didn’t come back, and acting rashly would only kill more people.
Bai Yinnian was splashed with cold water. Although he was confident in his own strength, he had to admit Zhao Yi’s concerns.
The main thing was that Mu Fan had already paid the price for his arrogance.
What if the situation was far more serious than Bai Yinnian imagined?
Bai Yinnian had never thought of himself as invincible in this world.
If it were in the past, he could risk punishment to go save people secretly.
But now, he had to consider that Xiao Ji and Xiao Cui were still at home, and Xiao Ji’s legs were still impaired.
What if he died outside, leaving Xiao Ji and Xiao Cui orphaned? Xiao Ji’s mobility was already limited.
Xiao Ji watched Bai Yinnian’s pained silence, held his hand, and said:
“I’ll go with you.”
Bai Yinnian refused: “No, the situation is unclear, I can’t let you take the risk.”
Xiao Ji said: “It may not be a risk. I have some ideas. The disappearance of your people should be related to the two high-level pollutants that appeared last night.”
Bai Yinnian froze, instantly grabbing the key point: “Two?”
Xiao Ji looked into his eyes: “You only saw one when you arrived.”
Bai Yinnian raised an eyebrow: “The other one…”
Xiao Ji looked at his eyes: “Bai Yinnian, you underestimate me.”
Bai Yinnian wanted to say something else, but he was directly interrupted by Xiao Ji:
“You don’t have time to consider. It’s been almost a day since the incident; the longer it drags on, the less likely your teammates are to come back. Trust me, I will definitely not be a burden to you.”
Xiao Ji said it was a fact.
He was always so calm, so composed.
Everything he said seemed to carry a persuasive power.
Bai Yinnian didn’t tangle any further. Having made up his mind, he put his shirt back on, stood up, and said to Xiao Ji:
“If something happens, I will make sure you come back alive.”
Xiao Ji didn’t express any opinion on this.
But just as the two were about to leave, Xiao Cui ran downstairs and hugged Bai Yinnian’s leg.
Bai Yinnian patted Xiao Cui’s head:
“You stay home.”
Xiao Cui looked at Xiao Ji, and Xiao Ji gave Xiao Cui an unreadable look.
Xiao Cui then let go of Bai Yinnian’s leg and waved at him obediently to say goodbye.
Xiao Ji abandoned his wheelchair and walked out of the house with Bai Yinnian.
The military vehicle was parked outside Bai Yinnian’s house. Bai Yinnian first opened the door for Xiao Ji, and after Xiao Ji got in and sat down, he took the driver’s seat.
Before departing, Xiao Ji suddenly pinched Bai Yinnian’s chin and kissed him.
Bai Yinnian didn’t understand, only thinking that Xiao Ji was also uneasy and was finding ways to distract himself.
And what he didn’t notice was that when Xiao Ji kissed him, a small figure had already slipped out of the house.
After the car started, it sat quietly on the roof of the car, followed the two people in the car, and left the shelter together.
