Chapter 4: Then Let’s Sleep in the Same Bed
On the very first night of moving in, he had not only spoken ill of the host but also grabbed Best Actor Gu by the arm. Lin Zhile felt he had a true talent for stepping on landmines.
However, Mr. Gu didn’t seem to be angry.
The man released his grip on the door handle and didn’t say anything regarding Lin Zhile’s recent offense.
“There are indeed snakes in the villa area. The property management issued a warning a few days ago, but I didn’t expect it would come specifically to welcome you. Did it bite you?”
Lin Zhile answered blankly, “Is that so… No, I wasn’t bitten.”
Mr. Gu actually believed him!
Gu Jingxiu nodded. “Go sleep in the master bedroom tonight. This house doesn’t have any other spare rooms. It’s too late now; we’ll inform the property management to handle it tomorrow.”
Thus, Lin Zhile found himself standing in Gu Jingxiu’s massive master bedroom. On his feet, he wore a new pair of slippers, though they were several sizes too big.
The master bedroom’s decor was in the same style as the outside, but it evidently held much more life. There were collectibles in the cabinets, and foreign language books with bookmarks tucked inside resting on the nightstands.
Lin Zhile also noticed a beautiful terrace outside and a massive walk-in closet.
Gu Jingxiu inspected the master bedroom and found no trace of any strange creatures.
After eliminating the danger, he locked the doors to the terrace and the closet.
During this, Lin Zhile expressed that he could just sleep on the sofa; the leather sofa out there looked pretty comfortable, too.
But Gu Jingxiu said snakes could crawl into rooms, and they could crawl into living rooms just as easily. Did he want to rekindle his romance with it?
Lin Zhile rubbed the goosebumps on his arms and decisively refused.
With the bed surrendered to him, Gu Jingxiu prepared to make do on the sofa chair for the night. Lin Zhile immediately felt a pang of guilt. “Mr. Gu, you sleep on the bed. I can sleep on the floor.”
Gu Jingxiu thought of the painting resting in the study.
Having accepted a gift worth over a hundred thousand yuan, if he didn’t even give the person a bed to sleep in, wouldn’t that make him look excessively cruel?
“No need. Go to sleep early.”
Seeing Gu Jingxiu refuse and shake out a blanket to rest, Lin Zhile blurted out, “Then let’s sleep in the same bed!”
Lin Zhile climbed onto the bed, taking up only a tiny sliver of space. Gu Jingxiu’s bed was massive. He patted the remaining area. “I only need a small spot to sleep.”
“Plus, I’m a very good sleeper. I absolutely won’t do anything to you.” Lin Zhile’s eyes were incredibly earnest and sincere.
Gu Jingxiu’s movements paused.
Many people had invited him to their beds, each with a more beautiful exterior than the last, yet none of them had ever been able to move him.
This was the first time someone had done it quite like this.
Lin Zhile stared at him with burning intensity, his gaze pure, his expression utterly docile.
For a brief moment, Gu Jingxiu’s eyes darkened.
He thought to himself, This little cousin is truly very innocent.
“Do you want to sleep with me that badly?” Gu Jingxiu withdrew his gaze, his tone flat.
Lin Zhile was stunned for a second, feeling that those words sounded very strange.
But upon further thought, he realized an important issue.
He didn’t have any bad intentions, but inviting someone he had just met to share a bed—wasn’t that an offense to Gu Jingxiu?
Thinking of this, Lin Zhile instantly felt embarrassed. “Sorry, I just…”
He looked at Gu Jingxiu, afraid the man would think he had ulterior motives.
However, there was no trace of anger on the man’s handsome side profile.
Gu Jingxiu raised his hand and pressed the remote control. The lights in the room slowly extinguished, and darkness surged like the tide, enveloping Lin Zhile.
Perhaps because someone else was beside him, the darkness didn’t seem so terrifying this time.
Gu Jingxiu said softly, “It’s fine. Go to sleep.”
When Lin Zhile woke up the next day, the wall clock pointed exactly to 8:05 AM.
His phone was still abandoned in the guest room, so there was no alarm to wake him up. Thankfully, he hadn’t slept in too late.
Sitting up from the bed, Lin Zhile’s first sensation was that his throat hurt.
It was dry and painful.
Soon after, his stomach joined the protest with a growl. He hadn’t eaten dinner yesterday; he hadn’t mentioned it, and Caroline hadn’t asked.
Lin Zhile climbed out of bed. There was no one on the sofa chair, only a blanket draped over it.
Accompanied by the faint scent of arborvitae wood, he had fallen asleep shortly after lying down last night, so he felt reasonably energetic now.
He just didn’t know how Gu Jingxiu had slept, considering he had taken up the man’s bed.
Lin Zhile slowly withdrew his gaze and walked out of the room.
After washing up and tidying himself, he still didn’t see any trace of Gu Jingxiu. Could it be that the man had gone out early in the morning?
Lin Zhile couldn’t worry about that right now. He walked into the kitchen, preparing to make some breakfast to appease his long-protesting stomach.
Without his phone, he couldn’t order takeout, and with Mr. Gu nowhere to be found, Lin Zhile’s low blood sugar meant that if he starved any longer, things were going to get serious!
Mr. Gu’s refrigerator was huge—a double-door, four-compartment behemoth. Lin Zhile’s eyes lit up.
It seemed Mr. Gu was someone who knew how to enjoy life.
He excitedly opened the refrigerator door, and his smile gradually froze.
Inside, there was only one piece of steak and half a carton of eggs.
The rest was completely empty.
Lin Zhile picked up an egg. It was stamped with foreign text. He flipped it over and saw a price tag: pasteurized, first-born eggs, four for 88 yuan.
Lin Zhile: …
Aside from that, there was a box of pasta in the cupboard, and the seasonings were quite complete.
Fortunately, Lin Zhile knew how to cook. He took out the steak and an egg, planning to make a steak, egg, and pasta dish.
As Lin Zhile washed his hands and prepared the ingredients, he suddenly wondered if he should make a portion for Mr. Gu.
But would the other party even eat the breakfast he made?
Maybe he should forget it.
Lin Zhile shook his head; his cooking skills were merely at the level of filling a stomach.
A few seconds later, Lin Zhile stood in front of the refrigerator, opened the door, and took the remaining egg.
He should make it just in case. If Mr. Gu didn’t eat it, he could save it for his own lunch.
The sounds of sizzling and cooking food began to echo through the kitchen. The range hood hummed into action, and the steak lost its bloody color under the roasting flames.
Meanwhile, on the basement floor of this very villa:
The morning light filtered into the gym through the skylight. A tall, slender man was moving rhythmically on the treadmill, sweat trailing from his neck down into his collar. It was none other than the Mr. Gu that Lin Zhile couldn’t find anywhere.
Twenty minutes later, two plates of steak pasta were served on the table. The presentation was truly average. Lin Zhile wasn’t skilled in Western cuisine; he could only manage to cook the steak through while trying to retain its juices as much as possible.
However, he picked up a piece, took a bite, and his brows smoothed into a smile. The taste wasn’t bad, at least.
Gu Jingxiu, wiping the damp tips of his hair after a shower, walked up from the basement and was unexpectedly hit by a delicious aroma.
He was slightly confused. He had clearly ordered two portions of Chinese-style breakfast, so why was the scent of steak wafting over?
Gu Jingxiu didn’t go change clothes immediately, choosing instead to head to the dining room to investigate.
Lin Zhile had just stuffed a mouthful of pasta into his mouth, his cheeks bulging like a little squirrel, looking thoroughly satisfied. He suddenly saw Gu Jingxiu appear before him.
He hurriedly swallowed the food. “Mr. Gu… Good morning.”
So he had been at the gym early in the morning.
A hint of envy gathered in Lin Zhile’s eyes, envious of Gu Jingxiu’s robust physique.
“Morning,” Gu Jingxiu replied.
Lin Zhile noticed him looking at the breakfast on the table. He scratched the tabletop with his finger, stood up, and said, “Has Mr. Gu eaten breakfast yet? I made two portions.”
Then, he added softly, “The taste isn’t bad, you know.”
Gu Jingxiu checked the watch on his wrist. He had ordered the food before entering the gym, but clearly, some accident had occurred, as it had not yet arrived at his dining table.
Starving a guest into making their own breakfast bright and early in the morning—Gu Jingxiu frowned slightly. This really made him look like a terrible villain.
Seeing he hadn’t expressed a stance, Lin Zhile smiled and said, “If you’ve already eaten, I can save it for lunch. It won’t go to waste.”
Gu Jingxiu walked over to the dining table, pulled out a chair, and sat down. “That won’t do. I haven’t had breakfast yet, and I’m in desperate need of it right now.”
He added, “As compensation, I’ll treat you to lunch out today. You can pick the restaurant.”
Lin Zhile’s eyes lit up, and he deliberately asked, “Then I want to eat at a Michelin three-star!”
Gu Jingxiu swallowed a bite of steak. This little cousin of his actually had quite decent cooking skills.
Lin Zhile looked triumphant, seemingly pushing his luck, but having eaten the boy’s food, how could Gu Jingxiu dare refuse? “Of course.”
Lin Zhile smiled sweetly.
After breakfast, Gu Jingxiu cleared both plates and put them in the dishwasher.
He conveniently checked his food delivery app. The reason the Chinese breakfast was absent was that the merchant had missed the order. With a deadpan expression, Gu Jingxiu filed a complaint.
Then, he and Lin Zhile had a frank discussion about household chores.
Gu Jingxiu didn’t like spending time on trivial daily tasks. He had a long-term housekeeper, but since he had been with the film crew recently, the housekeeper had returned to his family’s old estate.
He had wrapped up filming early this time, but the housekeeper was delayed and wouldn’t start work until this afternoon.
Once Sister Jin, the live-in housekeeper, started working, Lin Zhile wouldn’t need to cook for himself anymore.
Although Lin Zhile didn’t particularly enjoy cooking either, noticing that Mr. Gu seemed quite bothered by this matter, he said, “Actually, I really don’t think it’s a big deal. Making my own food feels quite freeing. That’s what I did when I lived at other people’s houses in the past.”
When he was sent to live with relatives as a child, the phrase he heard the most was “make yourself at home,” which meant he had to do the chores just the same.
Lin Zhile was incredibly beautiful, but it was clear he wasn’t a pampered child.
He had his own philosophy for surviving in unfamiliar environments, and he seemed to have experienced his fair share of living under others’ roofs.
Yet, from what Gu Jingxiu had heard from Lin Xiaofang, Teacher Lin’s family cherished Lin Zhile like the apple of their eye.
Suppressing these subtle disharmonies, Gu Jingxiu nodded. “It is my honor to be able to make you feel free.”
Hearing this, Lin Zhile’s eyes curved into a smile once again.
But he was interrupted by a violent fit of coughing.
The dryness and pain in his throat had lessened slightly while eating, but now it hurt even more than before he had eaten.
With no other options, Lin Zhile could only drink water for relief. Before long, he saw Gu Jingxiu walk over with a glass of dark liquid.
“Throat-soothing tea. It looks ominous, but it tastes pretty good.”
He spoke with sincerity. Lin Zhile coughed while quietly whispering a “Thank you” to Gu Jingxiu, before chugging it down in one gulp.
Just as Gu Jingxiu had said, it looked dark but went down sweet and clear. The dryness and pain in Lin Zhile’s throat were vastly relieved.
He looked at the cup, and then at Gu Jingxiu.
Those rumor-mongers truly deserved to be executed!
His older brother was such a good person! Not only was he handsome and generous, but he also gave up his bed for him, brewed tea for him, and was going to take him out for Michelin-star food.
Lin Zhile sniffled, a thin layer of moisture pooling in his eyes, his cheeks flushed a light red from coughing. He tilted his head back to look at Gu Jingxiu, completely unaware of how sweet and sticky his voice sounded: “Thank you, brother~ You’re such a good person.”
Meeting his gaze, Gu Jingxiu felt as if he had looked directly into the eyes of Medusa; his body froze completely in place.
After half a minute passed, Best Actor Gu slowly raised the hand resting at his side and finally took the opportunity to viciously ruffle the kid’s hair: “You’re welcome, Lin Zhile.”
