Chapter 47: Meeting Even While Seeing a Doctor?!
The person on the bed gradually stopped struggling. His eyes were closed tight, his skin a sickly, pale white. His soft face was dappled with tear tracks, and a hint of pain lingered between his brows. He looked like a white swan with its wings broken.
Such a weak and sickly appearance would move anyone to pity.
Standing by the bed, Ji Xiao’s lips curled into a dark smile. His eyes shimmered with an indefinable light.
He slowly raised his hand, his knuckles gently stroking the youth’s cheek. He took a deep breath and murmured with a doting obsession:
“Xiao An, my good daughter-in-law. Your eyes look so much like Qiuwan’s. Always so gentle and kind. Every time I see your eyes, I feel like she isn’t dead.”
Ji Xiao’s calloused fingertips carefully slid from Jian An’s closed eyelids down to his exquisite face. After lingering for a moment, he let out a light sigh and withdrew his hand:
“No wonder Songting hates you and mistreats you, yet didn’t torture you to death for killing Qiuwan. He likely misses his mother too much as well. After all…”
At this point, he paused. A flash of tenderness and pity appeared in his eyes, but it was quickly replaced by the anger he suppressed in his heart. He spoke word by word:
“After all, she was the only person in the world who was good to him. But that kind of thing is usually the most useless. People with attachments only become indecisive.”
With that, Ji Xiao’s gaze suddenly fell on Jian An’s slightly open collar. His expression grew heavy, and he knit his brows.
A patch of skin as white and smooth as jade was exposed, reflecting a tempting luster in the sunlight.
His eyes narrowed, his Adam’s apple rolling. His gaze grew deep and unreadable, yet a flicker of heat began to burn within it.
Driven by his extreme longing for his late wife, Ji Xiao lost his reason. He slowly raised a hand, his long, sturdy fingers tightening, and then he reached toward the youth’s hospital gown as if possessed…
Before his fingertips could touch the youth’s body, a sudden knock sounded on the closed door.
The dong-dong-dong of the knock seemed to hold some kind of magic, striking directly at the heart.
Ji Xiao was startled. He hurriedly pulled his hand back and turned toward the door with an awkward air. He gave a symbolic tug to his tie, his tone carrying a hint of anger and displeasure:
“What is it?”
The assistant’s voice came through the door: “Chairman, several of the company’s previous partners have arrived. They need you to return as soon as possible.”
“Mhm, I understand.”
Ji Xiao impatiently licked his lips. He looked back one last time at the unconscious person on the bed before striding toward the door.
…
After visiting Jian An in the ward, Liang Qinian went to the outpatient clinic to register for a dermatology appointment. He sat on a bench outside the office with his slip, waiting quietly.
Lately, due to the cold and dry winter weather, a large patch of eczema had flared up on his chest and back. It was both painful and itchy, making his hands shake when he mixed drinks. He had been forced to take time off.
This happened every winter. When the eczema wasn’t active, he could live a normal life, but once the itching started, it was hard even to stand. Applying ointment didn’t seem to help.
If the itching hadn’t become truly unbearable, he wouldn’t have bothered wasting money to come to the hospital for an exam.
But the trip wasn’t a waste. At least he had seen Jian An and learned about the other man’s current situation.
He could only say that the man had changed significantly. The shell was the same, but the soul felt as if it belonged to a different person.
The Jian An in his memory had always been sunny and cheerful, with a smile always on his face. No matter what happened, he could handle it calmly, as if nothing in the world were worth worrying about.
Liang Qinian himself had once been pulled out of the darkness and back into the world by that dazzling light.
But now, he could only see gloom, a lack of focus, and sorrow in Jian An’s eyes.
So, what had that man gone through over the years? How could he have become like this…
Liang Qinian’s grip on his registration slip tightened, and his mind drifted.
In a place he didn’t notice, Lu Huaishen—who happened to be passing by the dermatology department—stopped in his tracks. Seeing the dazed youth, he gave a casual smile, finding it interesting.
He lightly pushed up the gold-rimmed glasses on the bridge of his nose. After a few seconds of hesitation, he tilted his body slightly and caught a glimpse of the contents of Liang Qinian’s registration slip.
He could certainly treat this skin condition.
Before he could read many words, the other man suddenly looked up, snapping out of his daze. The sudden reaction was unexpected. Lu Huaishen’s heart gave a strange thud. Before the man could fully see him, he naturally ducked into the office.
A light, cool breeze brushed past his ear, carrying a faint scent of disinfectant. Liang Qinian gave an instinctive shiver. He habitually looked to the side, only to see the corner of a pure white coat flash past the office door.
Before he could think further, the system called out his name and number.
He quickly stood up and checked his belongings. With a helpless sigh, he hurried into the dermatology office.
Several medical devices were running quietly in the large examination room. Only the faint hum of the instruments could be heard. An adjustable bed sat in the corner.
A tall man in a white coat sat in the main doctor’s chair, his back to the door.
Lu Huaishen was looking down at a report, his expression calm and focused. Out of the corner of his eye, he caught a glimpse of the person entering, pretending not to notice the approaching footsteps.
The sunlight through the window fell on the man’s shoulders. Liang Qinian blinked, his expression dazed. He felt an inexplicable sense of familiarity from that back.
Where had he seen it? He couldn’t remember.
A surge of painful itching came from his chest again. Unable to help himself, he scratched at it through his clothes with effort. He couldn’t care about anything else now. He pulled out a chair and sat in front of the consultation desk.
Struggling to endure the physical discomfort, he gritted his teeth and placed the registration slip on the table. His voice was raspy:
“Doctor, sorry to disturb you. I’m here for a consultation.”
Hearing this, the man in the swivel chair suddenly turned around. He was wearing a mask, showing only a pair of eyes behind glasses. He raised an eyebrow and asked with professional calm:
“What are the symptoms? Where is the discomfort?”
That voice… why was it so familiar?!
An unfamiliar male voice continued to echo in his mind. He tried to recall it clearly, but it felt as if it were covered by something, making it hard to hear. A bad premonition arose within him.
Liang Qinian shook his head to clear away the messy thoughts. He instinctively appraised the doctor before him. When the other man caught him staring, he quickly withdrew his gaze and answered truthfully:
“Doctor, well… I get eczema on my chest and back every winter. It’s itchy and painful, and it’s gotten very serious. Ointment hasn’t helped much. How should I treat it?”
“Ahem.”
Lu Huaishen cleared his throat. He was surprised that the youth hadn’t recognized him. A trace of disappointment flashed in his amused eyes as he asked: “How long has this skin condition been going on?”
The other man thought for a few seconds, but his gaze continued to linger on Lu Huaishen with an inquiring look. He replied:
“It’s been two months.”
Lu Huaishen’s well-defined brows knit. He looked surprised. Professional habit made him look at the patient with confusion:
“Two months? Why are you only coming for treatment now?”
Liang Qinian pressed his lips together. His clear eyes looked exhausted. He let out a light sigh and rubbed his brow:
“I was busy with work during that time and didn’t have time to see a doctor. I thought it was just ordinary eczema and would go away with some ointment. I didn’t expect it to get itchier and itchier, so I came.”
“Young people today don’t take care of their bodies. Careful, or when you’re old, even your partner won’t want you.”
Lu Huaishen shook his head helplessly at the workaholic before him. He stood up and walked straight to the adjustable bed, taking a specialized eczema ointment from the medicine cabinet.
He set out the skin-cleansing medications one by one. He turned to look at Liang Qinian, who was still sitting in the chair and scratching. He beckoned with his finger and advised casually:
“Come over here. Stop scratching with your fingers; it’ll get infected. If you break the skin, it’ll be harder to treat than the eczema.”
“Oh, right. I understand, Doctor.”
Liang Qinian awkwardly straightened his coat. He hid his arms behind his back as if nothing had happened, but he couldn’t help but feel suspicious.
Are this doctor’s eyes that sharp?
He had only taken advantage of the moment the man was preparing the medicine to lightly scratch his chest to relieve the unbearable pain, yet the doctor had seen it. Did he have eyes in the back of his head…?
And from the angle of him standing up and walking over, the doctor’s build and back truly looked more and more like a certain person he had accidentally offended…
Oh! Right! He remembered now!
It was that shameless creditor from the hotel a few days ago who had tried to swindle him for an 80-million-yuan suit!
No way, right? Is it really such a small world?
Running into him even while seeing a doctor?!
Liang Qinian’s eyes widened in shock. His gaze was turbulent, and his steps slowed.
Absolutely impossible. The world isn’t that small. Maybe the doctor just looks a bit like that scumbag creditor. There are so many people in the world; it’s normal!
After comforting himself, he let out a slow breath to suppress the panic in his heart. He hurried to the adjustable bed and lay down as instructed by the doctor.
“Take off all your clothes.”
As soon as he found a comfortable position, Liang Qinian heard the person by the bed speak in a flat tone. He asked:
“Ah? Why?”
Hearing such a foolish question, Lu Huaishen felt a headache coming on. He let out an involuntary cold laugh and retorted: “If you don’t take off your clothes, how am I supposed to diagnose you?”
“Oh, oh, oh! Sorry! I’ll take them off now!”
Liang Qinian snapped out of it. He quickly removed all his upper-body clothing, revealing a lean, flawless chest and smooth, flowing mermaid lines. Paired with his handsome face, it was impeccably perfect, radiating a lethal temptation.
The only thing that was completely out of place with his physique was the large patch of red eczema extending from his chest to his lower abdomen.
Despite having seen countless fit and healthy bodies, Lu Huaishen’s heart still skipped a beat when he inadvertently caught sight of it. His breath hitched.
