Chapter 67: Grandfather’s Surprise
Old Master Chi sat eating, watching Chi Yuheng cupping Ye Ran’s face and asking him to open his mouth to see if his tooth was damaged.
Suddenly, he understood.
It turned out Chi Yuheng really had been raising Ye Ran like a son since childhood.
The old man decided that since his eldest grandson was unwilling to marry Qiao Yousheng, he would let it be.
After the meal, the family sat in the living room accompanying the old man.
The old man suddenly remembered the gifts he had mentioned earlier for his three grandsons hadn’t been delivered yet. He left them with a sentence, “Wait for me a moment,” and went back to his room to fetch the items.
On the other sofa, Chi Yuheng sat in the middle, his fingertips lightly sliding across a tablet screen, his gaze focused intently on the financial headlines.
On either side of him sat a younger one, both clutching their phones and staring at who-knows-what.
Seeing the old man chatting one moment and then suddenly heading back to his room without saying why, Chi Youchu’s curiosity piqued.
Putting down his phone, he asked the two beside him, “I say, Grandfather was fine just a second ago, why did he suddenly leave?”
The more Ye Ran heard this, the more it sounded wrong. What did he mean by ‘was fine just a second ago, and suddenly left’? [TN: This is a Chinese euphemism for dying.]
Grandfather was still right there.
Chi Youchu hadn’t realized what was wrong with his words yet. Risking his life, he blurted out another sentence, “He wouldn’t be hiding a beauty in a golden house at his age, would he?”
As soon as he finished, he received a slap to the back of his head and a flick to the forehead simultaneously.
Ye Ran had practically reached over Chi Yuheng’s arm to strike Chi Youchu.
After the hits, the two made eye contact, seemingly finding an ally in each other.
Chi Youchu hadn’t expected it. He had only said a couple of sentences, yet the two people beside him attacked him at the same time.
Although the spots they attacked were different, their desire to discipline him was identical.
“I just said it casually, was it necessary for the both of you?” Chi Youchu clutched his head, looking pitiful and aggrieved.
Chi Yuheng didn’t spoil him. “Go get your brain checked when you have time. Focus your mind on your studies. If Grandfather had heard what you just said, he’d break your legs.”
After Chi Yuheng finished, Ye Ran immediately followed up, “Think before you speak. Grandfather is doing perfectly fine and will surely live to a hundred. If he heard what you just said, he’d definitely put you in solitary confinement.”
Chi Youchu: “…”
He felt as if before the old man could even touch him, his brother and Ye Ran had already flayed him.
Since when did these two have such chemistry when hitting him?
Regardless, to avoid getting beaten, Chi Youchu chose to shut his mouth obediently.
A few minutes later, the old man emerged from his room, carrying the gifts he had prepared.
When those items were laid out before them, they were momentarily confused.
Mainly, they all knew what the items were. There were paper documents that looked like some kind of contracts, very formal.
Right next to them were toys, which looked quite out of place next to the documents.
The corners of the old man’s mouth turned up. “Look, these are the gifts I prepared for you.”
The old man had said before that he would give Ye Ran a surprise. Ye Ran stared at the items on the table.
Was there a surprise for him among them?
Before he could say anything, Chi Youchu spoke up again, “Grandfather, have you fallen in love with cartoons lately? Are all the gifts ‘Ultraman fighting little monsters’?”
The corners of the old man’s mouth finally straightened out under Chi Youchu’s efforts. “To hell with your Ultraman fighting little monsters! Come over here and see if I don’t beat the life out of you.”
Instantly, Chi Youchu’s tattling function activated. He turned to say to Chi Yuheng, “Eldest Brother, Grandfather is being mean to me.”
Chi Yuheng ignored him, turning to the old man instead. “Grandfather, do you need my help in beating the life out of him?”
Chi Youchu: “…”
I can see it now. Whether it’s Grandfather or Eldest Brother, you’re both related to me by blood.
Many of the things on the table were fun and interesting items the old man had seen while traveling abroad. He picked up one of the small toys and gave it to Chi Yuheng. “This is for you.”
Chi Yuheng had long outgrown the age for playing with toys, but he would always smile and accept whatever the old man gave him.
It was a kangaroo wearing boxing gloves, with large eyes, looking quite cute.
Ye Ran glanced at the toy in Chi Yuheng’s hand. Aside from not looking exactly like him, everything else was a match.
The kangaroo was wearing boxing gloves. Perhaps the creator was being abstract, but they had carved eight-pack abs onto the kangaroo’s stomach, which looked very firm.
It looked exactly like Chi Yuheng hitting a sandbag in the gym. It was quite interesting.
Seeing Ye Ran staring, Chi Yuheng took the kangaroo toy and placed it in front of him. “I’ll give it to you.”
Ye Ran took the toy. Just because he looked at it a few times, Chi Yuheng gave it to him?
He wasn’t a child; he wouldn’t snatch toys from others.
Ye Ran sent the kangaroo back. “That was given to you by Grandfather.”
Chi Yuheng: “If you like it, it’s all yours.”
For some reason, the two accidentally triggered a button, and the kangaroo moved, throwing a punch forward as a hidden compartment popped out from the back.
Inside was a seal.
It turned out the toy was just a container; the item inside was what the old man truly intended to give.
This was the seal that only the head of the Chi family would possess.
Although Chi Yuheng had been managing the company all these years, it didn’t mean that all assets belonged to him.
Now, finally, the old man was handing everything in the Chi family over to him.
Chi Yuheng’s eyes flickered. “Grandfather.”
The old man laughed happily. “Without it, I’ll be so much more relaxed. No one will disturb me when I’m out playing in the future.”
Having been busy his entire life, the moment he handed over all his power was one of unprecedented relief.
From now on, he could go wherever he wanted, and there would no longer be people calling him in the middle of the night to ask for instructions while he was still dealing with jet lag.
Chi Yuheng took the seal and gripped it in his palm.
Now the entire Chi family was on his shoulders. Whether for Ye Ran or the Chi family, he couldn’t easily fall.
Having seen Chi Yuheng’s gift, Chi Youchu was very curious about what his gift was.
He picked up another toy—a little monster, and a particularly ugly one at that.
He searched around it but found no buttons or switches.
He looked puzzled. “Grandfather, this couldn’t just be a toy, could it?”
Although he wasn’t interested in the inheritance of the Chi family and liked the seal even less—he just liked being a profligate young master, eating, drinking, and having fun all day—if this was purely a toy, he would be a bit disappointed. Even a sound effect for this ‘little monster’ would be fine; he could place it by his bed and play with it for a few days.
The old man looked serious. “If it’s not a toy, what else could it be?”
The corners of Chi Youchu’s mouth pulled down. He suddenly felt that his gift and his eldest brother’s toy should be a pair.
The kangaroo with boxing gloves could perfectly knock down the little monster.
Old Master Chi looked at his youngest grandson’s disappointed expression and smilingly took out a set of keys.
“This is a new apartment I bought for you. It’s larger than the previous one, an ocean-view flat. It’s so you won’t go running to your brother’s house all the time to sponge off them.”
Anyone who encountered an apartment delivered to their hands would grin widely. Chi Youchu took the keys and hung the little monster on them.
This little monster looked more pleasing to the eye the more he looked at it.
Even so, Chi Youchu had to grumble a sentence, “My brother’s house is so large, it would be so boring with just the two of them living there. I’ll go over whenever I have time to liven things up. They don’t know how much they welcome me.”
After speaking, he even looked at Chi Yuheng. “Right, Brother?”
Chi Yuheng looked up. “I just haven’t thrown you out yet.”
Chi Youchu: “…”
I shouldn’t have asked.
Both toys on the table had been taken, leaving only the documents.
Ye Ran looked at the documents on the table, his brow twitching. Could that be his gift?
Both Chi Yuheng and Chi Youchu had their gifts; only Ye Ran was left.
The old man smilingly pushed the document in front of Ye Ran. “Xiao Ran, this is your surprise.”
