Chapter 144: Forbidden Spell
Elder Lin was indeed not a smart person. Feng Shi had only said a few words before the man became enraged, tossing talismans over as if they cost nothing.
“Boy, today I’ll kill you first to vent my anger, and then I’ll take the immortal sword!”
Feng Shi wasn’t in a hurry to strike back. Instead, he utilized his movement techniques to flash out of the way.
Old man Lin’s talismans missed their mark, all landing on the barrier behind him.
However, this barrier was exceptionally sturdy; the few talismans striking it had almost no effect.
Elder Lin’s face turned green with anger, and he called the two old lackeys behind him to attack together.
This was exactly what Feng Shi wanted. His movement techniques were excellent, so dodging these attacks wasn’t a problem. After a few rounds, all of their attacks had landed on the barrier.
A small crack had already appeared on the barrier.
Feng Shi pondered in his heart, thinking it would be great if he could add Quan Xinghai into the mix.
However, the other party clearly wasn’t someone who would let himself be used as a weapon. Instead, he smartly just stood in place and watched them fight.
Not long after, even the thick-headed Elder Lin slowly noticed the problem. He hurriedly stopped his attacks, his teeth nearly grinding to dust in anger: “Liu Yi! You played me again!”
Feng Shi smiled radiantly. “Eh? Elder Lin also knows to use the word ‘again’?”
“Being played by a junior time and time again, aren’t you embarrassed!”
“You!” Elder Lin’s face alternated between green and red. “Arrogant brat!”
Just as he was about to make a move again, the purported peacemaker Quan Xinghai spoke up from the side.
Heaven knows what schemes were turning in that head of his as he said amicably, “Everyone, please listen to a few words from me…”
“Pah!” Elder Lin interrupted him. “You hypocritical piece of dog trash, what are you still pretending for! If you ask me, you and this Liu Yi are cut from the same cloth!”
Old man Lin attacked indiscriminately, his curses sounding incredibly foul.
Feng Shi chuckled merrily from the side. “Sigh—Elder Lin, don’t drag me into this.”
Quan Xinghai’s expression stiffened, his smile fading away. Enduring it patiently, he said, “Elder Lin, you are vulgar.”
Elder Lin sneered. “And you’re elegant? Wearing a fake skin makes you elegant?”
Feng Shi stifled his laughter on the side, holding it back with great difficulty.
Sitting back and watching dogs bite dogs—the feeling was simply too satisfying. He even wanted to grab a small folding stool to sit down and watch.
Seeing that he had completely torn all pretenses with Elder Lin, Quan Xinghai stopped pretending. He raised his hand, his spiritual energy materializing to grip the other man’s throat. Narrowing his eyes, he warned, “Elder Lin, if you continue to refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit, I cannot guarantee I’ll spare your life.”
Although both were Nascent Soul cultivators, Quan Xinghai was clearly somewhat stronger. Elder Lin struggled for a moment before quickly caving in. “Y-You, let me go!”
It was easy to see that Old man Lin was quite capable of bending to the circumstances.
Quan Xinghai let out a cold sneer and slowly released his grip. Brushing off his sleeves, he resumed his guise of a modest gentleman. “Now, can everyone continue to listen to me speak?”
The three men nodded incessantly.
Satisfied, Quan Xinghai continued, “My suggestion is that we all join hands to break open this barrier first, and then rely on our respective strengths to seize the sword. How does that sound?”
Elder Lin and the others exchanged glances. After weighing the options for a moment, they nodded in agreement. “We can do that, but we must agree beforehand: once it’s done, no one is allowed to be the first to establish a blood contract!”
Quan Xinghai smiled like a scheming old fox. With a snap, he unfolded his folding fan and swayed it gently before his chest. “Acceptable.”
Then he turned back to ask Feng Shi, “And you, young friend Liu? What are your thoughts?”
Feng Shi clicked his tongue twice. “Since everyone has agreed, what else can I say? Let’s begin.”
Quan Xinghai gave a slight smile.
The five individuals took up different positions and simultaneously exerted pressure on the barrier in the center.
To Feng Shi’s right was Quan Xinghai.
He deliberately kept an eye on the other man’s movements, but didn’t notice anything unusual.
It wasn’t until the first layer of the barrier before them shattered and the second layer strengthened—resulting in a much larger backlash—that Quan Xinghai slightly furrowed his brow. Yet just a moment later, his somewhat thinned-out spiritual energy miraculously became abundant again.
On the other hand, the faces of the other three men had turned extremely ugly, their spiritual energy failing to circulate in time.
Naturally, Feng Shi, having a cheat, was completely at ease, but Quan Xinghai…
Judging by the quality of this barrier seal, one could tell it was set up by Venerable Yuguang. The backlash caused by the residual magical power of such a mighty figure couldn’t be withstood this easily by an ordinary Nascent Soul cultivator.
Could it be that Quan Xinghai was using some sort of secret technique?
Feng Shi pondered secretly, but suddenly felt something bump against his back.
The force was very light, to the point where an ordinary person would never have been able to detect it.
This was very wrong.
Feng Shi furrowed his brows. He didn’t move recklessly to avoid alerting the snake in the grass, but instead called out to Qingqing: “Qingqing, help me check what’s going on behind me.”
[No need to look! Quan Xinghai has cast a Forbidden Spell on you.]
“Forbidden Spell? What’s that?”
Having stayed in the cultivation world for so many years, it seemed he had never heard of anyone practicing such a thing.
[Forbidden Spell. Put simply, you can understand it as a hex. It has been classified as a forbidden technique for a very long time and has long been lost to the world, leaving behind only some fragmented scrolls.]
[So, you could say that Quan Xinghai has placed a hex on you, and a super high-level one at that.]
Feng Shi ground his teeth. “Damn it, he really is a treacherous old bastard. I knew I didn’t misjudge him.”
[It’s not just you; the others are the same. Sneak-attacking people invisibly is the most terrifying.]
[Quan Xinghai can not only use this Forbidden Spell to control the people he wants to control, but he can also extract nourishment from them to absorb for his own use.]
As soon as Qingqing finished speaking, Feng Shi felt the spiritual energy in his body rapidly draining away. Then, he saw invisible threads connecting the backs of Elder Lin and the others to Quan Xinghai’s palm.
No wonder this man could recover so quickly just now; it turned out he was siphoning other people’s spiritual energy.
[Host, do you want to break the Forbidden Spell? The System can take care of it with a single snip.]
Feng Shi: “…”
“No.”
He narrowed his eyes. “That wouldn’t be very fun.”
[Then how do you want to play, Host?]
Translator’s Note:
- Forbidden Spell (禁咒): A dark magic or hex that taps into forbidden ancient powers. I just love how Feng Shi is treating life-and-death curses like a fun little puzzle to unravel!
- Refusing a toast only to drink a forfeit (敬酒不吃吃罰酒): A classic Chinese idiom. It means choosing the hard way over the easy way. Elder Lin really knows how to test limits!
