Chapter 107: Gathered Together; Two People Crawled Out of the Wife’s Cabinet in the Middle of the Night…
After meeting with Kai Lan and the others, Jiang Chenyan returned to the Jiang family villa district. At that hour, the dusk was pressing down heavily on the branches of the plane trees.
The perimeter of the villa was besieged by numerous media outlets. Left with no choice, he had to dispatch several bodyguards before things finally quieted down.
For the following week, Jiang Chenyan remained busy taking over affairs.
In the study, his coat was draped casually over the back of his chair. Jiang Chenyan’s fingertips brushed over the stacks of information on the desk; details of arms transactions and weapon distribution route maps were piled high.
The mess Jiang Xuanshen had left behind was far more troublesome than he had imagined.
Just as Jiang Chenyan picked up his fountain pen, intending to mark key information in the documents, a knock on the door sounded abruptly.
The moment the door was pushed open, a black figure carrying the chill of the outdoors burst inside.
Upon seeing the newcomer’s face clearly, the hand Jiang Chenyan used to hold his pen paused slightly.
Situs. It was quite a surprise.
Situs was still dressed in a crisp black trench coat, his hair combed meticulously.
He bowed deeply to Jiang Chenyan, his spine curving into a respectful arc. “You are actually still alive…”
Jiang Chenyan didn’t even lift his head as his pen tip left a mark on the paper. “If you’re here to reminisce, you can leave now.”
“I am here to help you.” Situs straightened up, his gaze tightly locked onto Jiang Chenyan’s face—a face both strange and familiar—causing his blood to boil.
Jiang Chenyan finally stopped writing. He looked up at the butler before him, his brow arching slightly. “Help me?”
“I can help you secure your position as the head of the Jiang family,” Situs said. “Most of Mr. Jiang Xuanshen’s old subordinates fought alongside him through hail of bullets; it will be difficult for them to accept a young master who suddenly appeared out of nowhere. I served under the Master for many years. I am familiar with their temperaments and can mobilize many resources.”
Jiang Chenyan fell silent. Situs’s words had struck his weak point. The forces Jiang Xuanshen left behind were deeply entrenched; those crafty old soldiers were indeed the biggest stumbling blocks on his path to power.
And Situs, as Jiang Xuanshen’s most trusted right-hand man, possessed the connections and intelligence that Jiang Chenyan most needed at this moment.
Jiang Chenyan’s gaze gradually grew cold. “What do you gain by helping me?”
A perfectly measured smile curled at the corners of Situs’s mouth. “I do this not only for you but also for Mr. Jiang Xuanshen. His life’s work was centered on the Jiang family. He would never wish to see the family business destroyed in the hands of outsiders.”
The two stared at each other in silence. Jiang Chenyan hesitated for a moment before finally tossing his pen onto the desk. “Mhm. We’ll see how you perform. If you do poorly, I will dismiss you immediately.”
This was a tacit agreement.
A flash of wild joy crossed Situs’s eyes. He respectfully uttered a “Yes,” then thoughtfully closed the door as he withdrew.
Tranquility returned to the study. Jiang Chenyan frowned as he stared at the closed door; he still had to remain wary. Situs was not that simple.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the star sector, Shen Shiyue and Ji Xuan were racing against time to collect evidence of Jiang Qingye and Jiang Qingyan’s innocence.
Both sides were in a dead heat against the clock, busy to the point of never touching the ground.
As the last ray of twilight was swallowed by the night, a light click suddenly came from the study window.
Jiang Chenyan looked up just in time to see two figures sneakily climbing in from the windowsill.
Kai Lan’s coat had snagged on the window frame, and Ye Qingyu was behind him, desperately trying to pull him free. The two stumbled into the room, kicking up a small cloud of dust.
It took a while for Jiang Chenyan to find his voice. “Could you two use the front door next time?”
“How could we use the front door?” Ye Qingyu sat down in an empty chair in the corner. “I still have a top-level warrant out for me. Those bodyguards at the front door only recognize faces, not people. Wouldn’t walking through the front door be turning myself in?”
Kai Lan looked around the study. Every chair was covered with data and documents. He simply propped himself up on the desk, sitting directly on the mahogany surface in front of Jiang Chenyan. “Yeah, my identity is special. By the way, our side has had several handovers with Cyrus’s side recently.”
Jiang Chenyan looked up, his pen tip pausing on a document. “How was it?”
“That old thing has a truly sinister mind.” A flash of ruthlessness crossed Kai Lan’s eyes. “It seems he won’t rest until he has eliminated Ye Qingyu.”
“But we never intended to reach an agreement with him anyway.” Ye Qingyu sat up from her chair, her tone unable to hide her excitement. “Guess what we found? He was the mastermind behind that underground Omega auction house years ago. He was also in cahoots with that man, Lord; the two of them teamed up to commit countless heinous acts.”
Jiang Chenyan had a deep impression of that auction. “It’s a bit surprising, but thinking carefully, it seems to be within reason.”
“This is the perfect handle to grab. We can start collecting evidence,” Ye Qingyu said. “When the time comes, we’ll deal him a fatal blow so he can never rise again.”
Just as Kai Lan was about to add more details, a knock suddenly sounded, interrupting their conversation.
Situs’s voice came from outside the door: “Young Master, Professor Ariel is here to see you.”
Kai Lan’s expression changed instantly as he became flustered. He paced in a half-circle on the spot, using his eyes to signal Jiang Chenyan about where to hide.
Jiang Chenyan lightly tapped the desk and inconspicuously jerked his chin toward the mahogany cabinet in the corner.
Understanding the hint, Kai Lan grabbed the still-dazed Ye Qingyu and practically dragged her to the cabinet. He clumsily pulled open the doors and dove inside, slamming them shut from the within.
The space inside the cabinet was cramped and tiny. Ye Qingyu, squeezed tight by Kai Lan, furrowed her brows and asked in a low, puzzled voice: “Is there a need to be this afraid? It’s just a professor.”
Kai Lan covered his mouth, his shoulders trembling slightly. His voice carried a hint of a sob: “Wuwuwu, you don’t understand…”
Seeing Kai Lan’s cowardly state, Ye Qingyu truly had nothing to say. She could only resign herself to shrinking into the corner.
“…”
Jiang Chenyan knew that what was meant to come would eventually arrive. It was already the limit for the Professor to have endured several days without coming to the door.
The study door was slowly pushed open, and Professor Ariel’s figure appeared at the entrance.
He still wore those signature thin gold-rimmed glasses, but the sockets behind the lenses were deeply sunken. His usually meticulously styled black hair was messy against his temples. His entire being was enveloped in a heavy sense of exhaustion, quite different from the high-spirited person in his memory.
It had been two years. From the separation of life and death to today’s rare reunion, Jiang Chenyan felt a fair amount of guilt. If not for that carefully planned fake death back then, Professor Ariel would not have withered into his current state from longing and toil.
Using the identity of “Jiang Chenyan” back then, he had invisibly caused the Professor countless troubles. The things he had to do next would be another bloodbath; he could never involve the man again.
If the plan hadn’t changed midway, forcing Jiang Chenyan to expose his identity, he truly would have wanted to live on with a new identity forever.
But things had gone against his wishes. Jiang Chenyan couldn’t achieve perfection and had, in the end, neglected the people who truly cared about him.
Jiang Chenyan quickly suppressed the emotions in his eyes and rose to greet him. “Professor, you’ve come.”
“Do you know how I’ve lived these past few years?” As soon as Ariel spoke, Jiang Chenyan felt guilty, his hands hanging at his sides instinctively tightening.
“I’m sorry…”
Situs, standing to the side, took everything in. Discerning the situation, he said nothing and silently turned, quietly closing the study door to leave the two some space.
“I only just recovered my memories…” Jiang Chenyan tried to find an excuse, but his voice was as low as a mosquito’s hum.
“Lying to me again?” Ariel’s voice rose in anger. “That boy Kai Lan lied to me, saying you were no longer of this world, and now you’re using ‘memory recovery’ as a ruse? Do you all enjoy watching me worry and fear so much?”
Inside the cabinet, Kai Lan heard his name mentioned and flinched instinctively, causing the cabinet door to let out a slight creak.
Ye Qingyu: “…”
Kai Lan quickly covered his mouth, fearing he would make more noise.
Although the slight sway of the cabinet door was faint, it was keenly captured by Jiang Chenyan.
“Please listen to my explanation. Things truly aren’t what you think.”
Professor Ariel let out a cold laugh, not easily fooled. “Then what are they? Could it be that you have some earth-shattering difficulty that makes even death worth faking?”
Jiang Chenyan opened his mouth, his throat feeling as if it were blocked by a ball of cotton. He had been working for the association all these years, involving too much; for a moment, he didn’t know where to begin.
Just as he was about to organize his words, Situs’s voice came from outside the door. “Young Master, Admiral Xie is waiting at the door again. He insists on seeing you.”
“Tell him to get lost.”
Jiang Chenyan rubbed his brow in irritation. This was already the third time Xie Huaijin had come to harass him this week. The man was like a piece of dog-skin plaster that couldn’t be shaken off.
“It’s quite lively here. So many people coming in the middle of the night—it seems your life is quite exciting now.” At the thought of the grievances between Jiang Chenyan and Xie Huaijin’s lot, Ariel instinctively felt a headache coming on.
“I don’t know how to tell you. These past few days, Xie Huaijin has been acting as if he took the wrong medicine…”
Before he could finish, Situs’s voice came again from outside the door, carrying a hint of helplessness: “Master.”
Jiang Chenyan reached his limit. “What now?”
“Admiral Shen has arrived with men,” Situs’s voice came through the door. “He says he wants to talk to you.”
Shen Shiyue? Jiang Chenyan’s fingertips suddenly froze in mid-air. Why would he suddenly come to the door at this time? Could it be that something went wrong on his end?
“Understood,” Jiang Chenyan responded in a deep voice. He grabbed his coat from the back of the chair. “I’m going out to see him now.”
“No need.” A steady, cold voice came from outside the door, followed by the sound of the lock turning. “I’m already here.”
Jiang Chenyan’s expression stiffened. He instinctively turned to look at Ariel.
The Professor likely didn’t know that he and Shen Shiyue had maintained contact over these two years, or even that they were together now. It was entirely possible he still viewed Shen Shiyue as someone from the Alliance.
“Professor, I…”
It seemed he hadn’t checked the almanac before leaving today. Ariel, caught between a rock and a hard place, interrupted Jiang Chenyan. “Forget it. I’ll hide.”
Shen Shiyue had suddenly appeared in the middle of the night and hadn’t seen Jiang Chenyan in two years; no one could say what sparks would fly when these two met. If he stayed here, whether he was caught by Shen Shiyue or had to explain why he was here, the situation would only become more chaotic.
Jiang Chenyan, feeling helpless, was about to stop Ariel to explain something, only to see Ariel walk straight to the mahogany cabinet in the corner and pull the door open.
Inside the cabinet, Kai Lan was dumbfounded. Ye Qingyu was also dumbfounded.
Ariel’s expression froze for a moment. The three of them stared at each other, and for a while, no one spoke. In the narrow space, Kai Lan and Ye Qingyu didn’t even know where to put their hands.
Kai Lan squeezed out a dry sentence: “Long time no see.”
Ye Qingyu was beyond embarrassed. What was this?
“…”
Ariel leaned against the mahogany cabinet, taking in this scene that was practically a silent comedy. He couldn’t help but be angered into a laugh.
Just then, the door was pushed open with a creak. Shen Shiyue burst in and, without looking at anything else, threw himself onto Jiang Chenyan. He buried his cheek in the crook of Jiang Chenyan’s neck. “I missed you so much…”
Jiang Chenyan’s body stiffened. He remained silent, lifting his hand to lightly push Shen Shiyue away in an attempt to create some distance, appearing confused. However, Shen Shiyue only held him tighter.
Jiang Chenyan reminded the other: “Don’t you want to see the current situation?”
Shen Shiyue froze at the words. Only then did he belatedly turn to scan the surroundings. When his gaze swept past the corner, he stopped abruptly. Ariel was standing by the cabinet with his arms crossed, looking at them with a strange expression.
Jiang Chenyan frowned, discovering that Ariel had closed the cabinet doors at some point.
“So it’s the Professor.” Shen Shiyue didn’t take it to heart. Was he afraid Ariel would misunderstand? Or was it something else? He turned back to Jiang Chenyan. “It’s normal for the Professor to come. The man is standing there openly, not sneakily hiding in a cabinet.”
Shen Shiyue even had the heart to joke: “Why that expression? Is there really someone in the cabinet?”
Just as he finished speaking, there was a light click. The cabinet door that had just been closed was pushed open from the inside.
Kai Lan walked out slowly from the cabinet, his clothes still dusted with a bit of grime. He looked up at the crowd. “I don’t think there’s any point in hiding anymore. We should just speak openly.”
Because the cabinet door was open, Ye Qingyu was forced to crawl out as well. “Yes… let’s speak openly.”
Two people crawling out of his wife’s cabinet in the middle of the night—wasn’t that eerie? The smile on Shen Shiyue’s face gradually faded, and his eyes were covered with a layer of frost.
Seeing the scene spiraling out of control, Jiang Chenyan couldn’t help but support his forehead. “Since we’re all together, let’s have a good talk. I can explain everything.”
