Chapter 76: Heat Period. It’ll Be Over If Someone Comes in Now…
Jiang Chenyan’s face lost its color at a rate visible to the naked eye, becoming so pale it was almost transparent.
System:
[Host… Holy crap!]
Jiang Chenyan’s fingertips grew cold. “Give me some stimulant.”
“…Okay.”
Qi Bai’s voice drifted in through a layer of thick mist. Scattered syllables broke against his ears. Jiang Chenyan only felt his head buzzing; he didn’t hear a single word clearly.
After an unknown amount of time, the effect of the medicine finally pried open a sliver of clarity.
Jiang Chenyan slowly looked up at Qi Bai. His eyelashes trembled lightly, and his voice was low and hoarse: “What? Say it again.”
Qi Bai’s eyes were dark. His gaze swept over Jiang Chenyan’s neck. That sudden patch of crimson against the pale skin invited imagination.
It was obvious that Jiang Chenyan was not in a good state today.
He retracted his gaze, his tone cold: “I was speaking to Shen Shiyue.”
Shen Shiyue’s brow furrowed slightly: “…”
Jiang Chenyan’s consciousness was repeatedly pulled between clarity and turbidity. The pheromones in his body were churning. Sharp pain spread along his blood vessels, and a dense itching sensation crawled all over his body. It was as if tens of thousands of ants were gnawing on his bones—the itch was heart-piercing and the pain was numbing.
Why hasn’t Qi Bai left yet?
Many nearby students had already cast curious or scrutinizing gazes. Qi Bai clearly lost interest in continuing the conversation and left with the others from the Student Council.
The room finally returned to silence.
Yet Jiang Chenyan could no longer sleep.
The effect of the medicine had fully taken hold.
Following it was a sense of losing control that bordered on collapse.
He was truly going crazy.
A warm hand covered the back of his hand. Shen Shiyue’s voice carried concern: “It’s very cold.”
“What’s going on?”
Jiang Chenyan snapped back to his senses and suppressed the emotions churning in his eyes. His fingertips curled slightly as he forced a smile: “I’m much better now. I just need to rest for a bit.”
He added in a low voice: “I’ll tell you the specifics when we get back to the dorm.”
Shen Shiyue understood and didn’t ask further, merely nodding lightly: “Okay.”
For the rest of the class, Jiang Chenyan didn’t sleep. The medicine continued to work. The heart-wrenching pain and sense of chaos from before had actually vanished without a trace; he was slowly recovering.
Jiang Chenyan gave a “Tsk”: “System, a miraculous cure.”
The System was also pleasantly surprised:
[Eh? I didn’t expect the effect of this stimulant to be so top-notch either.]
On the way back to the dorm, Jiang Chenyan’s face had already returned to normal, looking much better than the lifeless state of the past few days.
“Shen Shiyue, I seem to be fine now.”
Hearing this, Shen Shiyue instinctively raised a hand to place it on Jiang Chenyan’s forehead. The warm palm pressed against the delicate skin; the sensation was warm and normal, not as ice-cold as before.
His finger pads paused. “Then what was going on with you just now?”
This situation had been going on for several days.
Jiang Chenyan stopped and moved close to Shen Shiyue. His warm breath brushed over the other’s ear, and his low voice carried a hint of lingering affection: “It’s likely because my heat period is coming, which is why the pheromones in my body are chaotic.”
Shen Shiyue lowered his eyes. His long lashes concealed the emotions within, and his heart skipped a beat.
An Omega was telling another Alpha that his heat period was coming.
His voice was deep, carrying a huskiness he hadn’t noticed himself. “Do you want me to help you?”
The moment he said it, Shen Shiyue regretted it.
His fingertips suddenly curled. Was he crazy?
He clearly knew what those words meant and the boundaries between them that hadn’t been broken yet, but he still couldn’t control himself from saying them.
Jiang Chenyan was stunned. “…”
He tilted his head to look at the person beside him. The streetlights cast varying shadows on Shen Shiyue’s profile, making his expression unreadable.
Was he worried he didn’t have enough suppressants?
“Don’t worry, I have enough suppressants.”
“Good…” Shen Shiyue’s voice was dark and hoarse.
Looking at Shen Shiyue’s lowered eyes, a sense of bizarreness unexpectedly crossed Jiang Chenyan’s heart.
Looking like this, Shen Shiyue seemed… very disappointed?
Jiang Chenyan didn’t understand.
…
The following days were relatively peaceful. Jiang Chenyan continued to go to the jewelry shop for his part-time job every night.
Occasionally running into Xie Huaijin and Mu Sian, he would take a detour if possible, and dealing with them wasn’t too difficult.
Until the list for the recommendation slots was officially posted on the most conspicuous spot of the bulletin board.
Jiang Chenyan saw his name at a glance. The black ink on the white paper was an expected result, yet he felt no joy.
Xie Huaijin and Mu Sian’s names followed closely behind, also on the list—this was also within his predictions.
But as he checked the complete list from beginning to end, confirming it several times, Shen Shiyue’s name was nowhere to be found. Jiang Chenyan’s brow furrowed uncontrollably.
Not only that, but of their entire team, he was the only one recommended.
Clearly, Shen Shiyue’s strength was not inferior to anyone’s, yet in the end, he was the only one who got the slot. The others had all become accompanying runners.
As night deepened, Jiang Chenyan carried a pack of cigarettes and climbed alone to the roof of the teaching building.
The evening wind carried a chill as it hit his face, fluttering the hair on his forehead.
He sat leaning against the ground, a lit cigarette between his fingertips. White smoke slowly rose, drifting over his eyes.
Twenty recommendation slots seemed significant at first glance. But after excluding the fixed recommendations for upperclassmen, only six remained for their year level.
The cigarette in Jiang Chenyan’s fingers paused briefly.
Those six slots had clearly been given to Mu Sian, Xie Huaijin, and others from their teams. From beginning to end, his team was the only one overlooked.
The first-place team received this kind of treatment.
It was quite laughable.
The reason? Three light words: “Grade too low.”
So-called “grade,” in the face of actual strength, was nothing more than an excuse to deceive people.
Smoke entered his lungs through his throat, causing it to tighten. Yet he continued to take several unconscious drags.
Blue-white smoke circled around his fingertips, coiling round by round before gently dissipating with the wind.
Faint footsteps came from behind, drawing closer until a figure sat down beside him.
The cigarette in Jiang Chenyan’s fingers paused. He didn’t look back, his voice hoarse from the smoke: “Professor.”
Ariel’s voice carried a hint of casualness. Falling into the evening wind, it was as light as a feather yet precisely struck the heart: “You got what you wanted. Aren’t you happy?”
Smoke escaped with his breath, drifting over his eyes.
He looked down at the jumping crimson on the cigarette butt. “I can’t say.”
Got what he wanted? Perhaps.
It was just following the established track forward.
A darkness flickered in Jiang Chenyan’s eyes. He wouldn’t be staying in the Alliance for long.
Of course, he couldn’t stay long either.
Before Jiang Chenyan could react, Ariel’s long fingers pinched the cigarette between his lips and pulled it out without hesitation.
“Smoke less. It’s choking.”
Jiang Chenyan was stunned. The burning scent of the tobacco still lingered on his lips.
“…”
Ariel didn’t look at him, walking directly to the ashtray in the corner of the roof. Right before Jiang Chenyan’s eyes, he firmly extinguished the still-burning cigarette. The sparks died instantly, leaving only a wisp of blue smoke.
He turned around, his eyes profound. “You’ll get the certificate in about a week. Behave yourself during this week at the military academy.”
Jiang Chenyan arched an eyebrow. “When have I not behaved?”
Hearing this, Ariel smiled but said nothing.
He offered a final reminder: “Don’t act as you please after entering the Alliance. There are many people in there you can’t afford to offend.”
Jiang Chenyan slowly raised his eyes, meeting the gaze of this Alpha professor who had resolutely chosen the military academy over joining the Alliance after graduation.
The depth in the Alpha’s eyes hid unspoken meanings. He was silent for a moment. “I know, Professor.”
The waters of the Alliance were deep; he naturally knew that.
Professor Ariel’s warning was not superfluous.
It was just that he hadn’t planned on staying in that quagmire for long anyway.
The evening wind carried a chill as it swept past.
“Professor, it’s a bit unfair.” Jiang Chenyan thought of the list, his brow furrowing slightly. “Our team was clearly first. It seems Alpha pheromone grade really is important…”
“Mm.” Ariel responded flatly.
Of course it was important. An Alpha’s grade had always been the invisible shackles and ladder of the planet.
The figure of Shen Shiyue involuntarily appeared in Jiang Chenyan’s mind. The other man had said his pheromone grade was very low, vaguely mentioning it was B-grade.
But in terms of strength, he was clearly far superior to many high-grade Alphas.
He said no more, straightened up, and patted the dust off his clothes. “Leaving now, Professor.”
Professor Ariel didn’t speak, merely staying in place quietly. His gaze followed Jiang Chenyan’s receding back as it gradually blurred and vanished in the night, the emotions in his eyes deep and unreadable.
…
Pushing open the dormitory door, Jiang Chenyan ran into Shen Shiyue sitting at his desk, his fingertips flipping through a book. His profile glowed gently under the desk lamp, and his expression was unnaturally calm.
Jiang Chenyan locked the door behind him. A sense of irritation inexplicably rose again.
He leaned against the door, staring at Shen Shiyue, his brow furrowing uncontrollably.
No…
They were about to be separated because of that slot—he was going into the Alliance while Shen Shiyue could only stay at the military academy. How could he be this calm?
An indescribable emotion surged into his heart, feeling as if something were blocked, making him feel stifled.
Jiang Chenyan pursed his lips and said nothing.
Unable to withstand the irritation in his heart, he took a few steps to Shen Shiyue’s desk. “What are you reading?”
“A book on military affairs.” Shen Shiyue looked up, a smile in his eyes. “What’s wrong? You look very unhappy.”
Jiang Chenyan spoke halfway. “You’re not on the recommendation list. Neither are Ji Xuan and the others. It’s just me.”
So, the two of us are about to be separated. Why are you so calm?
Hearing this, Shen Shiyue nodded. “I know.”
“…”
Jiang Chenyan was stunned, momentarily not knowing what to say. He had predicted many reactions, but he never expected Shen Shiyue to have this attitude.
“Are you bothered by this?” Shen Shiyue suddenly put down the book and leaned forward slightly, the smile in his eyes deepening. “Let me guess.”
“Are you afraid we’ll rarely see each other in the future?”
“Uh…” Having his thoughts exposed, Jiang Chenyan’s cheeks instantly heated up. He instinctively nodded, then suddenly shook his head. “No.”
Damn, what am I doing?
After speaking, Jiang Chenyan turned and walked to his own bed, lying down. He was incredibly embarrassed.
After lying there for a bit, Shen Shiyue’s gentle voice came from above, carrying a light smile: “You stay there for a few days. I’ll go find you when the time comes.”
Jiang Chenyan buried himself under the covers, his heart pounding uncontrollably. “…”
Okay.
He responded silently in his heart, unable to stop himself from thinking wildly. Coming to the Alliance to find me?
Although they could occasionally meet in the future, such an active promise sounded unique and felt indescribable.
Jiang Chenyan’s eyes flickered as he gave a soft “Mm.”
He didn’t see the deepening smile in Shen Shiyue’s eyes above.
Shen Shiyue had already made arrangements with his father’s side. He planned to head to the Alliance soon as well; there was no need to continue hiding certain identities.
…
Whether it was because of the medicine residue from the past few days or some other reason, Jiang Chenyan slept exceptionally soundly that night—he was almost dead to the world.
When he woke up the next morning, sunlight was streaming through the gap in the curtains onto the head of the bed. The bed opposite was already cold.
the optical computer screen was lit up with a message from Shen Shiyue:
[There’s an urgent matter at home that needs handling for a few days.]
Jiang Chenyan replied:
[Okay.]
His finger swiped across the screen. Only then did Jiang Chenyan remember that he still hadn’t met Shen Shiyue’s grandfather.
He’d wait a few days.
He would handle the Alliance audit first and make sure everything was settled.
His heat period should be over by now.
Over the past few days, Jiang Chenyan had used several suppressants on time. His body hadn’t shown any more abnormalities, and his pheromones were very stable. He figured there were no issues.
After washing up, Jiang Chenyan went downstairs to buy some things.
Passing a corner, he heard several Alphas talking about him.
“If only Jiang Chenyan were an Omega.” “What? Do you have a crush on him?” “Get lost! How could I have an Alpha-Alpha relationship! I just feel like he… you know? It’s an indescribable feeling.” “Looks attractive?” “A bit.” “His waist is also attractive.” “Indeed.”
As soon as the words fell, Jiang Chenyan walked out from the corner expressionlessly and gave them a cold look.
The faces of those Alphas instantly turned deathly pale. They didn’t dare say a word and took off running.
Jiang Chenyan thought it was absurd. These people actually had designs on him.
Why was the school full of perverts?
On the way back, Jiang Chenyan ran into Qi Bai.
The moment the Alpha saw him, his brow furrowed suddenly, and the words in his throat caught mid-air. “You…”
“What is it?” Jiang Chenyan was confused.
Qi Bai’s eyes were terrifyingly deep, deeper than any previous time.
After a few seconds of silence, he finally moved his gaze away and spoke in a low voice: “Nothing. You can go.”
Jiang Chenyan: “…”
Back in the dormitory, he collapsed onto the bed. Drowsiness swept over him, and his eyelids were too heavy to lift.
When he woke up again, it was already pitch black outside. He was exhausted, as if all his strength had been drained.
The optical computer vibrated once. It was a message from Shen Shiyue asking if anything had happened today.
Jiang Chenyan thought about it; those insignificant discussions weren’t anything major. He simply replied “Nothing.”
The two chatted for a bit. Afterward, Jiang Chenyan wasn’t sleepy and just lay there. Without realizing it, his consciousness became dull, and he fell asleep again.
Early the next morning, Jiang Chenyan woke up from the intense heat, his forehead sweating and his body burning.
His entire person felt as if he had been thrown into a furnace. The pheromones in his body were rushing and clashing uncontrollably.
He shuddered and fell straight off the bed. A dull pain came from his knee hitting the floor, but he didn’t care. He reached out with trembling hands to feel for the suppressants in the bedside table.
With the movement, his loose pajamas slid down halfway, revealing a large patch of skin. Fine beads of sweat snaked down his neck, soaking the fabric and clinging to his body, outlining his thin silhouette.
The unique pheromones of an Omega, mixed with the fragrance of sweat and carrying a sweet, rich scent, leaked out frantically into the air. It was so intense it almost drowned him.
A thought flashed in Jiang Chenyan’s chaotic mind—there were classes this morning…
But right now, let alone attending class, he couldn’t even stand steadily. His head was already burned blank, and his consciousness was swaying in the heatwave.
Jiang Chenyan was burned into confusion, leaving only primal heat and pain.
He tugged haphazardly at the clothes on his body, revealing more sweat-drenched, snow-white skin that was flushed with a sickly glow. He had long forgotten that he had been recommended to the Alliance and didn’t need to attend class anymore.
His mind was blank.
With trembling fingertips, he finally managed to find a suppressant. The moment the needle pierced his skin, the cold liquid injected into his body brought a fleeting comfort.
But it was still hot.
It was as if countless fires were burning within his body, spreading along his blood vessels and scorching every nerve.
Jiang Chenyan finally reached a conclusion—it was his heat period.
It was strange. He had clearly used several suppressants on time, even more frequently than usual. Why would the heat period suddenly explode?
Unable to care about much else, Jiang Chenyan injected several more vials of suppressants into himself in succession.
But the anticipated relief didn’t come. Instead, it ignited a more intense fire. The heat in his body surged to the extreme, and every inch of his skin was burning.
His reason completely collapsed, leaving only a deathly ordeal.
It would be over if someone came in now.
