Chapter 92: Flirting or Apprehending? â Apprehending Him
Walter let out a low laugh, the playfulness in his eyes growing. This little Omega was truly bold, having spent who-knows-how-much effort to sneak into this place.
âOh?â He raised an eyebrow. âTell me. What secret is worth taking such a large risk?â
Bai Ning looked up, his gaze meeting Walterâs directly. He said word by word: âJiang Chenyan is still alive.â
Once the words fell, the smile on Walterâs face froze. He remained silent for several seconds before slowly standing up and walking toward the person step by step. the air pressure around him dropped accordingly.
âAre you lying to me?â
Bai Ning didn’t back down. There wasn’t a hint of cowardice in his dark pupils as he asked back: âWhat reason would I have to lie to you?â
He clenched the hand hidden behind his back, his nails almost digging into his palms. He had investigated for a long time just for this moment.
âYou guys must want him quite a bit. Now that heâs still alive, isn’t this an opportunity for you?â
…
Late at night, everything was silent.
A faint vibration came from the ground, followed by the sound of distant thunder.
Jiang Chenyan woke with a start from his dream, his heart thumping wildly. Fine cold sweat broke out on his forehead.
He sat on the bed in shock, instinctively looking around the dark room. He could barely distinguish the outlines of the furniture. For some reason, the unease in his heart seemed to have been awakened by this thunder, growing stronger and stronger.
Just then, the door was pushed open gently. What entered his sight first was a pair of obviously mismatched slippersâone large and one small.
Kai Lan ran in stumbling. Without a word, he pounced onto the bed and hugged Jiang Chenyan tightly, his body still trembling slightly.
âIt seems to be raining and thundering outside. Iâm scared.â
Jiang Chenyan pushed Kai Lan helplessly, but he didn’t move.
Kai Lan instead hugged him tighter, burying his head in the crook of Jiang Chenyanâs neck. He said muffledly: âI need someone to warm me. Don’t push me away.â
The kid is afraid of thunder. Jiang Chenyan gave up struggling and let Kai Lan hug him.
He didn’t expect the two of them to be as busy as spinning tops the next day. A leak had somehow appeared in the base, and quite a lot of water had seeped in. Ignoring everything else, Jiang Chenyan and Kai Lan grabbed mops and a stack of towels and rushed up. They knelt on the floor to wipe and soak up the water bit by bit. They were busy for half the day before finally getting the matter settled.
Once everything was tidied up, the two were so tired they collapsed directly onto the sofa. To relax, they simply started a “Movie Marathon” mode. They could watch three movies a day, from sci-fi blockbusters to heartwarming comedies, watching until they were dazed.
Kai Lan also made all sorts of snacksâstrawberry pancakes, cheese cookies… the fragrance drifted everywhere in the small space.
When he reached the point of almost throwing up from eating, Jiang Chenyan ultimately couldn’t stay idle. After staying for only two days, he began to head out. Either he would put on a mecha suit and run to a simulated battlefield in the wild, practicing mecha operations again and again in the swirling sand and dust, or he would slip into those dimly lit corners of the underground city district. Following black market “old hands,” he secretly learned those survival skills that couldn’t be shown in public but were practicalâidentifying the authenticity of black market goods and mastering the rules of underground transactions.
That day, while researching a new gadget he had scavenged from the black market, Kai Lan leaned in beside Jiang Chenyan. âHey. Can you talk to your partner and let him ‘drop some gold coins’ again?â
Hearing this, Jiang Chenyan raised an eyebrow. âDon’t tell me youâve already spent all those Shen Shiyue gave us last time.â
âHow did you know?â Kai Lan scratched his head with a bit of a guilty conscience. âI recently modified a container truck, and it cost quite a bit.â
Jiang Chenyan, â…â
Kai Lan tucked away his smile, currying favor with his donorâs boyfriend. âForget that. Truly, he is the Alpha I trust most besides Professor Ariel.â
Jiang Chenyan, â…â
âDo you know why I trust him most? Because of you. Jiang Chenyan, only toward you, the favoritism in his eyes cannot be hidden. I firmly believe he won’t do anything to harm you, and naturally, he won’t harm the friends you are close to.â
Jiang Chenyanâs expression froze.
And Kai Lan added the second half of the sentence word by word: âAnd I am the friend you are closest to.â
To summarize, Shen Shiyue was a total “unlucky patron” (yuÄn dÇ zhÇng). This wave was purely a case of spending money on a pure investment with zero return.
Jiang Chenyanâs expression finally cracked.
…
After passing two days in a muddled state, the two heard that a large tavern in the city district was holding a singing and dancing event. Thinking of joining the fun to pass the time, they signed up with great interest.
Before departing, the two had imagined countless scenes. They thought it would be a pleasant music festival with soothing jazz music where everyone hummed and danced slowly. In the end, as soon as they stepped through the tavernâs door, deafening and explosive electronic music smashed into their heads, instantly shattering all their fantasies.
The dancers on the stage were wearing bold and revealing clothes. The people below also wished they could strip naked and go on stage for a wild dance. it was worlds apart from the atmosphere they had anticipated.
The two touched their pockets with heartache. Exchanging a glance and thinking of the high cost of the entry tickets they had finally obtained, they could only move to the bar seats and sit down expressionlessly.
âSo this news is a pure scam, right? How can they fool consumers like this?â Jiang Chenyan said while picking at the roasted chicken on his plate.
It had to be said that the food in this tavern truly didn’t taste bad; the fragrance was enough to cover half the annoyance.
He had been lowering his head to eat his food the whole time. When he finished the last bone and looked up, he was stunned.
The electronic music made his eardrums vibrate, and Jiang Chenyan hadn’t heard Kai Lanâs call for help opposite him at all.
A man dressed exaggeratedly with heavy makeup was standing in front of Kai Lan, stripping to the beat. the fabric of his collar was constantly sliding down with his movements.
Kai Lanâs face was as white as a sheet of paper, his voice sounding airy: âBuddy, I beg you… can you stop stripping?â
The other party acted as if he didn’t hear. Instead, he intensified his actions, leaning in to give a wink: âHandsome, you don’t even like this?â
Kai Lanâs hand holding the glass was shaking, and his stomach was churning; he looked as if he were about to throw up.
Seeing this, Jiang Chenyan stood up with a whoosh. Without a word, he reached out and grabbed the manâs back collar, giving it a somewhat forceful pull to drag him away from Kai Lan.
Without extra nonsense, he swung a fist.
With a muffled thud, it landed right on the manâs face.
The man stumbled back two steps, almost hitting the corner of the table behind him. He clutched his numbing cheek, his teeth contorting with pain. He never expected that Jiang Chenyan, who looked thin and had a slight frame, would have so much strength in his hands. With one punch, half his face was almost numb and without sensation.
Kai Lan was completely protected behind Jiang Chenyan.
Jiang Chenyanâs eyes were cold. âIf you keep pestering, Iâll call the guards. itâll be you who looks bad then.â
The manâs expression was ugly. He glanced at the pale-faced Kai Lan beside him. Not only would he not get anything by making a fuss, but it seemed he also couldn’t beat the other party. He gave Jiang Chenyan a resentful glare, muttered something, and then turned to squeeze into the noisy crowd without looking back.
âItâs okay now.â Jiang Chenyan turned to look at Kai Lan. He was between laughter and tears as he reached out to pat his back.
Kai Lan took a good while to recover. He barely suppressed the churning in his stomach and used the bar to slowly stand up. His voice was still a bit weak: âIâm going to the restroom.â
âWant me to go with you?â
Kai Lan shook his head. âNo need.â
Mainly, my stomach also hurts a bit.
Hearing this, Jiang Chenyan raised his wrist. His finger touched the screen to activate the function. âIf there is danger, contact me immediately.â
This pair of wristbands was specially made, with built-in two-way positioning and an emergency call system. It allowed the two to master each other’s location in real-time, allowing them to respond instantly no matter how far apart they were.
Kai Lan, âDon’t worry. Iâll take care of myself.â
Watching Kai Lan leave, Jiang Chenyan sat back at the dining table and picked up his utensils to eat.
The tavern was noisy with voices. the fragrance of food mixed with the faint scent of perfume permeated the air. Jiang Chenyan was eating with great enjoyment when a tall shadow suddenly loomed over him, blocking half the light before him.
Jiang Chenyanâs eyelids lifted slightly. What entered his sight was a pair of gold-rimmed glasses. the man wore an elegant smile, with the typical “refined beast” (yÄŤ guÄn qĂn shòu) looks.
A pick-up line?
Jiang Chenyan continued to cut the steak on his plate without making a move.
âSir, do you mind if I sit here and chat with you for a bit?â the manâs voice was gentle, with a hint of testing.
It really is a pick-up line.
Jiang Chenyan thought to himself: Compared to those blatant and uncomfortable pesterings, this manâs method is considered subtle.
The only difference is he isn’t stripping.
Jiang Chenyan set down his knife and fork. He looked up at the other party, his gaze as cold as if a thin layer of ice had formed. âI do mind.â
The man obviously hadn’t expected to get such a blunt and sharp rejection. the smile on his face stiffened for an instant, and then he barely squeezed out a few awkward laughs, trying to smooth things over: âYouâre quite the joker, sir. I just thought your temperament was very special…â
Jiang Chenyan looked down at his dusty old overcoat, his hair as messy as a birdâs nest, and the heavy black glasses on his nose that covered half his face. Along with the disguise, he was a total “Passing Character A” who couldn’t be picked out from a crowd. Why would someone take the initiative to stick to him?
âOnce youâve said your piece, leave. I have a partner.â
The smile on the manâs face actually became even gentler. âYou have a partner? Itâs okay. I don’t mind.â
As the saying goes, one shouldn’t strike a smiling face, but Jiang Chenyan still couldn’t help it.
âYou don’t mind, but I do. Buddy, are you really that narcissistic?â
The man was startled, his expression becoming a bit ugly. With a gloomy face, he picked up the wine glass on the table and walked toward Jiang Chenyan. Whether intentional or not, the wine in the glass splashed over Jiang Chenyan with a splash.
Jiang Chenyan frowned, deciding this man was looking for trouble on purpose. Before he could lash out, the man immediately put on a panicked appearance and hurriedly pulled out a handkerchief to wipe Jiang Chenyanâs clothes. âIâm sorry, Iâm sorry. it wasn’t intentional…â
Jiang Chenyan instinctively wanted to push him away, only to find the otherâs strength was surprisingly large. When his fingertips touched the thin calluses on the manâs palm, Jiang Chenyanâs brow furrowed.
Those were marks left only by long-term gun handling and mecha practice.
Jiang Chenyanâs gaze suddenly turned cold. Just as he was about to move away from the other party, the handkerchief in the manâs hand changed direction and headed straight for his nose and mouth. Jiang Chenyan lifted his leg and slammed a kick into the otherâs abdomen.
Walter let out a muffled groan. His body staggered back uncontrollably, knocking over a chair behind him.
âWhy so much hostility? I just wanted to help you wipe the wine stain from your face, and you already resorted to physical injury. Are you that unwilling?â
Jiang Chenyan didn’t want to beat around the bush with him. He gave a glance at the handkerchief. âThereâs a sedative on it.â
Hearing this, Walter was startled for a moment before letting out a low laugh. He had previously doubted whether this person was Jiang Chenyan, but now he was several points certain.
âSince youâve seen through it, thereâs no point in pretending anymore.â Walter tucked away his smile. âCome and have some fun at my place. What do you think?â
Not knowing when he had offended this character, Jiang Chenyan grabbed the goblet full of strong alcohol from the table and threw it at Walterâs face.
With a loud clang, the glass shattered and the liquid splashed. Walter instinctively turned his body to avoid it.
Without waiting for the other party to stabilize himself, Jiang Chenyan grabbed the remaining bottles of wine from the table and, with force in his wrist, smashed them one by one toward the other party.
The whistling sound of the wine bottles slicing through the air sounded in succession. Walter dodged left and right, but eventually, he was half a beat slow.
One of the bottles hit his temple with full force. With a muffled thud, the glass shattered and the wine mixed with warm blood welled up, flowing down his brow bone and forming a crimson trail below his eyelid.
This bit of pain was far less than the rage in his heart. it was the first time Walter had been hit by someone throwing bottles like their life depended on it.
His gaze was gloomy; he wished he could hack the Omega before him into a thousand pieces. the ridiculous thing was, he could now 100% confirm that this dowdy thing was Jiang Chenyan.
Jiang Chenyan seized the gap when the other party was injured to rush out the door. His finger quickly slid across the terminal in his pocket. Taking advantage of the moment he opened the door, he sent a message to Kai Lan, roughly saying something had gone wrong and they should meet at the shuttle in a bit.
He thought that leaving the tavern would allow him to break free from Walterâs restraint and smoothly reach the shuttle to meet Kai Lan. However, the moment he pushed open the door, all his fluke thoughts turned to nothing.
The other party had come prepared, specifically to apprehend Jiang Chenyan.
In the empty space in front of the hotel entrance, there was a sea of people in black. They stood shoulder to shoulder, leaving not a single gap. the muffled sounds of breathing mixed with the click of guns being cocked continuously stimulated Jiang Chenyanâs brain.
The men in black had cold eyes, and the guns in their hands were held steadily. Countless black muzzles were pointed in unison at Jiang Chenyan.
Jiang Chenyanâs temples throbbed. With a blockade in front and pursuers behind, he was truly pushed to a desperate situation now.
He didn’t have extra time to struggle. Facing dozens of black muzzles, his fingers quickly slid across the light-brain screen to send a final message to Kai Lan.
The notification that the message was sent successfully had just lit up when steady footsteps sounded behind him.
Jiang Chenyan looked back. He saw Walter walking out of the tavern entrance. the blood at his temple was still dripping down, seeping into his collar along his cheek and forming a dark stain on the dark fabric.
His face was ferocious, looking somewhat terrifying.
He stared at the light-brain in Jiang Chenyanâs hand, a faint smile of undisguised mockery tugging at the corner of his mouth. âWhat? Sending a distress message?â
Before the words even fell, Walter reached out and drew a laser gun from his waist. the muzzle glowed with a ghostly blue cold light, precisely aimed at Jiang Chenyanâs light-brain.
Jiang Chenyanâs beautiful eyes grew colder and colder. Without any hesitation, he exerted force with his wrist, and the light-brain was smashed hard against the solid ground.
With a crisp smash, the light-brain shattered into pieces. the screen cracked into a spiderweb, and all the data stored insideâhis recent movements and contact recordsâwere completely destroyed.
He slowly raised both hands. âYou see? Thereâs nothing left.â
His gaze landing on Walterâs bleeding forehead, Jiang Chenyan actually had the heart to smile. He feigned confusion as he asked: âIâm truly curious about who you are. Could it be youâre some mob boss? I just rejected your pick-up line; is it worth bringing so many people to corner me?â
