Chapter 35: Identity Reveal 2
Calling him “Baby” so naturally—he was far too practiced at it.
Ruan Zhimian’s ears grew hotter, and his breathing turned warm. Several times he wanted to speak, but the words got stuck.
In the end, the little scammer remained stubborn and tight-lipped.
“I didn’t! I’m hanging up. I don’t want to talk to you anymore.”
As soon as he finished, a low, raspy chuckle came from the receiver.
The call ended quickly. Ruan Zhimian took a cold drink from the car’s refrigerator and pressed it against his flushed face for a physical cool-down.
“Huff, huff.”
Qiuqiu somehow felt that its host was being completely controlled by the protagonist.
The car drove back to the Ruan residence. As soon as it came to a stop and Ruan Zhimian stepped out, a gentle, beautiful woman hugged him.
“Mianmian, did you miss your Auntie?”
This was Ruan Yechun, Ruan Xubai’s mother.
Ruan Zhimian’s dark eyes curved, and his voice was soft. “I missed you so, so much.”
Ruan Yechun currently ran a perfume company. Compared to her sister, Ruan Jiarong, her pace of life was much slower. However, she had been affected by a divorce in her earlier years, which had interrupted her career and led her to take Ruan Xubai and Ruan Zhimian abroad to study.
“My dear baby, your brother showed me your photos. They look so beautiful.”
“Brother said you wouldn’t be back for a few more days. He was helping you hide it from me.”
Ruan Yechun took Ruan Zhimian’s arm and walked into the hall, her gentle eyes filled with a smile. “Of course. We all wanted to give you a surprise.”
“Before I came back, your brother told me you decided to break off the engagement.”
“Just this afternoon, I went to your father’s law firm to get a detailed understanding of what happened.”
The two Ruan sisters consisted of one reserved Omega and one outgoing Alpha.
Yet they shared the same steadfast character.
“Your brother-in-law’s assistant did a very thorough investigation. We’ve collected a lot of evidence now.”
“Mianmian, he wasn’t a good boyfriend, and he certainly wouldn’t be a good partner. You did well to cut your losses.”
It turned out that in the eyes of the Ruan family, Ruan Zhimian’s decision to break off the engagement brought not just surprise, but also heartache.
Ruan Zhimian’s nose suddenly felt sour. He tilted his head slightly, leaning on his aunt’s shoulder. “Auntie, it must have been very hard for you back then.”
Twenty years ago, in that social climate, it was a big deal for an Omega to decide on a divorce.
“It wasn’t hard.”
That was a long time ago. She didn’t remember the pain of that time; she had lived very happily all these years.
Ruan Yechun said softly, “I was still pregnant with your brother at the time. After I personally witnessed him entering a hotel with his lover, I went downstairs and called the media. It made the front-page headlines.”
“When your mother found out, she went and trashed his company, nearly breaking his legs. Your brother-in-law put together a legal team to help me file for divorce.”
Back then, however, Alphas held absolute power in a marriage.
“Mianmian, don’t be afraid. We are all behind you.”
Ruan Zhimian said, “I’m not afraid.”
Fifteen minutes later, having changed into loungewear, the two of them sat in the empty dining room to eat. Ruan Jiarong and Chen Ji didn’t return often, and Ruan Xubai was also working overtime to monitor the newly launched product.
In the entire Ruan family, Ruan Zhimian was the most idle.
Ruan Yechun called him. Ruan Xubai was still busy on-site and hadn’t even had time to eat. “Mianmian had the butler send dinner to you.”
Ruan Xubai walked to a quiet spot, his cool eyes reflecting a gentle light.
“Brother says thank you, Mianmian.”
Not just Ruan Xubai, but Ruan Jiarong and Chen Ji had dinner sent as well, though each person’s menu was different.
Speaking of which, Ruan Zhimian hadn’t met Ruan Jiarong yet. According to his aunt, his mother was flying abroad again tomorrow.
“Gege, are you coming back to rest today?”
“I’m not. I have a lounge at the company.”
Ruan Zhimian nodded his head. “I wish you a successful workday, Gege.”
Thinking of tomorrow, Ruan Zhimian looked down at his watch. It was already eight o’clock. He frowned as he finished the medicine the butler brought, then went upstairs, chewing on a plum.
He was busy, though he didn’t know with what.
Ruan Zhimian pulled out the black card from his wallet and various expensive jewelry and ornaments from his safe. Could he compensate Shi He with money?
Ruan Zhimian decided to maintain his persona.
“Qiuqiu, what is my persona?”
Qiuqiu went back to flip through the manga. “Haughty? Vicious? A young master?”
In summary: someone not to be messed with.
Ruan Zhimian stuffed the items into his backpack. Then, self-brainwashing, he watched the large television in front of his bed. He ran to his computer to search for dramas featuring similar personas.
He saw the beautiful, obedient face in the mirror slowly lift. His gaze was one part cold, two parts haughty, three parts disdainful, and four parts disgusted. “This is your compensation.”
As he spoke, he nonchalantly adjusted his collar.
The young Master Ruan’s review of his own imitation was: “Will I really not get beaten up?”
Qiuqiu was completely charmed. It said firmly, “No.”
Ruan Zhimian continued watching dramas, picking up all sorts of random knowledge until he went to bed at eleven o’clock.
The next day, 7:00 AM.
Just after waking up and washing his face, the sleepy little kitten appeared in the dining room on time. He tapped his phone screen, his tone particularly “haughty.”
—[Baby Number 2: We can meet.]
Baby Number 1, Baby Number 2.
Someone’s contact name.
Shi He had just finished a shower. He wiped the water from his hair and picked up his phone from the dining room counter.
—[Shi He: Good.]
—[Shi He: 10:00 AM. I’ll send you the address in a bit.]
Ruan Zhimian’s fingers and ears felt hot.
He put down his phone and seriously ate breakfast with his aunt, obediently drank his medicine, and went upstairs to change.
He strictly followed the villain’s style from the dramas.
Mhm, it has to be black.
Ruan Zhimian picked up a suit and gestured with it.
He went back and forth before finally choosing a set of black clothes that jangled. He wore a black tank top as a base with a stylish black fishnet loose-fit shirt over it. It had quite a few accessories that swayed as he walked. He paired it with black denim trousers.
All black.
Ruan Zhimian looked in the mirror and felt satisfied. He changed and went out, having the driver take him to the makeup studio.
Makeup Artist: “Young Master Ruan, what kind of look are we going for today?”
Ruan Zhimian’s small face was expressionless, though in reality, his heart was trembling with nerves. “I want something cool.”
Makeup Artist: “Certainly, certainly.”
At 9:55 AM, the young master sat in the car wearing black sunglasses. The large glasses covered half of his face.
[Qiuqiu, how do I look now?]
[Very cool.]
A few meters away was the cafe Shi He had chosen.
Ruan Zhimian took a deep breath. He shouldered his backpack, his small face turning cold, and strode inside.
“A01.”
The cafe staff led him to the private room.
Ruan Zhimian stood outside the door. The room was completely enclosed. He looked at the surrounding area and felt that… with so many empty seats, they could easily talk outside…
A person appeared behind him, almost completely enveloping him.
“Aren’t you going in?”
Ruan Zhimian’s back straightened. His usually soft voice was deliberately pitched higher. “Mhm. We can talk outside.”
“Do you want to end up on the news?”
Oh right, it had only been two days since he was caught by a secret camera.
The young Master Ruan followed Shi He inside. Without even sitting down, he pulled out the prepared black card and handed it to Shi He. “This is your compensation.”
He turned around, ready to leave.
“You think this much money is going to make me forget everything?”
“Ruan Zhimian, I don’t lack money.”
Shi He’s dark eyes were deep. He calmly picked up his black coffee and said in a slow, measured way, “Ruan Zhimian, I like you now. Are you going to play with my feelings and then abandon me?”
Ruan Zhimian turned around, his mind full of question marks. “We were just playing around. It wasn’t serious.”
Wait, no. How had he abandoned him? At most, he had scammed Shi He into a ten-day relationship. That sounded even more like he’d played with his feelings. Wuwuwu, he was a bad person.
He didn’t know where he had learned such nonsense; he hadn’t been this talkative yesterday.
“Did I say I was playing with you?”
“I truly like you.”
This wasn’t following the drama script at all.
Ruan Zhimian had no choice but to sit down. He was still wearing his sunglasses and nearly bumped into something. Hiding his panicked eyes, he continued his “scumbag” performance. “I can’t help it if you like me.”
“You’ll find someone else.”
The little scammer said eagerly, “I don’t like you. I’m still engaged to Han He’an. I was wrong before. Just tell me what you want as compensation, okay?”
“Ruan Zhimian, you lied and said you liked me and wanted to be with me forever. How do you compensate for that?”
In less than ten minutes, the haughty young master persona had completely crumbled.
“Han He’an…”
The Alpha stood up unhurriedly. He sat down next to Ruan Zhimian, his dark eyes deep and unreadable. “I remember you said you didn’t like Han He’an anymore.”
Ruan Zhimian leaned back against the chair, and before he knew it, he was cornered against the wall.
The black sunglasses were taken off. Then came a haunting whisper, “Are you lying to me?”
