Chapter 40: Beta Gland
[Beta glands are undeveloped and cannot perceive pheromones.]
In most romantic relationships between Alphas and Betas, the paths always lead to separation due to the nature of secondary gender differentiation. More importantly, it means you can never share the same feelings as your lover.
The S-grade Alpha’s amber pheromones were no longer suppressed. They swept over in an overwhelming wave, the concentration severely exceeding the limit. He searched almost pathologically, oppressing every inch of space, attempting to leave a longer-lasting “mark” on Ruan Zhimian.
The watch on his wrist began to beep. His long, cold, white fingers reached down, entered the code to unlock the restraint, and tossed it onto the rack.
The Alpha’s susceptibility period was coming to an end; today was the second to last day.
Some irritable reactions that shouldn’t have appeared were present, perhaps related to emotional changes, or perhaps related to the effect of the suppressants. His body temperature rose rapidly.
Shi He’s cold, elegant phoenix eyes dropped gloomily, staring at the snowy-white nape of the neck in the mirror. He ground his canines slightly, nearly biting through the tip of his tongue.
He lowered his forehead, leaning against Ruan Zhimian’s collarbone. His voice was raspy. “Can I take a bite?”
His hand gripped Ruan Zhimian’s hand which was hanging to the side, his fingertips burrowing into the gaps between the fingers with a weight that was neither heavy nor light. “You promised me.”
This peaceful tone even carried a sense of grievance. “I’m just asking. It doesn’t matter if you’re unwilling.”
Having just been held and kissed many times, he looked up obediently with watery dark eyes. His beautiful small face was a dusty pink, and the hand that had been clutching his hem reached over to touch the other’s forehead.
Shi He… didn’t seem to be angry with him anymore.
Shi He’s forehead was very hot, and his hands were hot too. “You’re very uncomfortable right now.”
Most Alphas would pause their daily work and study during their susceptibility period to rest at home. Shi He was completely different; he seemed to rarely stop to rest, always busy.
“I don’t have pheromones. Will it be useful to you?”
He thought about it and had no intention of refusing at all. He even took the initiative to turn his body, his snowy-white fingers resting on the white round button at the collar of the oversized shirt Shi He had brought for him. His pure eyes looked at him, like a deity who had fallen to the mortal world and did not understand human nature.
He had no idea what the person before him wanted to obtain.
“You can try.”
Shi He’s large, slender fingers pressed against his shoulder. His black hair obscured his sickly gaze as he leaned forward, carrying Ruan Zhimian into his embrace with one hand and turning off the bathroom light.
He pressed his left hand against Ruan Zhimian’s lips.
“Bite me if it hurts.”
Sometimes, Shi He felt Ruan Zhimian was very special to him. Other times, Shi He couldn’t feel it. Ruan Zhimian constantly said he wanted to leave him, yet he could also do these things for him.
He had no idea how much Shi He wanted to possess him.
If he could just be given a little bit of love, that would be enough.
No one loved him.
Only the crack in the door allowed a weak light from the hallway to enter. Ruan Zhimian subconsciously leaned closer to Shi He.
He closed his eyes. Because he was nervous, his eyelashes trembled several times. His fingertips moved up, grabbing the hem of the Alpha’s clothes floating in the air.
Compared to the pain he had experienced when he was sick, it didn’t hurt much.
Ruan Zhimian still shed a few tears that pooled in his eyes.
His personality had been very obedient since he was a child. When his parents were still alive, he had family to protect him. After his parents died, he was forced to grow up quickly, gradually becoming a child who didn’t like to talk but showed kindness to all who cared for him.
He used his finger to wipe away the tears that escaped and burrowed into Shi He’s embrace. Unexpectedly, there wasn’t a huge reaction; he only felt his body become warm and his head a bit dazed.
Ruan Zhimian looked up, his voice tiny. “Do you feel any better?”
His first sentence was to care for him.
Shi He looked on with dark, murky eyes, his expression satisfied. His cold, white finger pad pressed against the nape, moving up slightly. He only restrained himself to rub the soft hair of the person in his arms. “Thank you, Mianmian. I feel much better.”
In reality, it was of no use at all.
The greatest use was to subside the Alpha’s anxiety.
The small head dropped, leaning face-to-face against Shi He’s shoulder. “I’m suddenly a bit sleepy.”
It must be a symptom after a temporary marking.
Some Beta glands develop better, while others feel nothing at all. Ruan Zhimian’s parents were both Alphas; logically, the probability would be higher.
Shi He leaned down, his arms sliding under the knees, and picked him up face-to-face. He kissed the forehead. “I’ll carry you back to rest.”
Ruan Zhimian gradually closed his eyes, still speaking to him in a soft voice, “No need to thank me. I promised you.”
The little black snake hissed as it appeared, following the Alpha’s footsteps.
When it crawled to the bedroom door, the door slammed shut with a bang. Its master, Shi He, forcibly expelled it, not allowing it to enter.
The little black snake was aggrieved and angry. It reared up in rage, standing half a person tall, intending to bite Shi He as soon as he came out.
Unexpectedly, Shi He easily bypassed it to get medicine from the entrance. “If you don’t want to be taken back by me, stay still.”
Shi He re-entered and closed the door.
The little black snake curled up outside the door. What S-grade spiritual body lived such a pitiable life? It also wanted to snuggle with Mianmian.
“Hiss, hiss.”
…
Inside the room, the lights were dim. Shi He sat on a chair on the balcony. Outside the extended balcony, the rain continued to pitter-patter. He took off his hearing aid and turned on a small lamp. The silver-white medicine cooler emitted a cold light.
A call from Gu Xici, “Shi He, the special medicine has been sent over… if you want to be with Ruan Zhimian, you’ll have to live like this for the rest of your life. Have you thought it through?”
The dark brown medicine from a long, thin syringe was injected into a vein.
Shi He was injecting suppressants.
“Gu Xici, I’ve thought it through. Do me a favor.”
“I have a few photos. Help me post them.”
Shi He tossed the syringe into the trash can and pressed an alcohol cotton ball against his arm. His voice was very low, separated by a pane of glass as his phoenix eyes watched the figure curled into a ball on the bed.
“Why?”
“He doesn’t want to be with me anymore.”
The final sentence sounded like a statement of fact.
“We will be together.”
