Chapter 45: His Family
Clearly, he was just helping Shi He, so why did it sound like he was lusting after his looks?
No, no, no, he hadn’t said anything like that.
“I don’t want to do anything…”
Ruan Zhimian’s mind was about to turn into a tangled ball of yarn. His thick eyelashes blinked as he forced himself not to look at Shi He. In an incredibly tiny voice, he gripped the armrest of the seat. “Do you still need the supplementary marking?”
It was currently 2:30 PM, and the light outside the window was bright.
Ruan Zhimian closed his eyes and turned around, raising one hand to subconsciously shield his frantically beating heart. The snowy-white, loose mohair sweater draped over his body; he was too thin, his collarbones propping up the neckline, and his neat, soft dark hair was casually ruffled.
He usually preferred to only do things he was prepared for, but so many unexpected situations always happened when he was around Shi He.
When Shi He drew close and held him tightly, Ruan Zhimian’s breathing hitched for a moment. His pale, slender fingers tightly gripped the front seat, his beautiful, soft eyes completely drooping as tears pitter-pattered down, utterly uncontrolled.
The S-grade Alpha’s amber pheromones drifted out casually.
Compared to last time, it could be described as weak.
Given the limited space, the Alpha withdrew his arms from where they were tightly wrapped around the boy’s waist. He unhurriedly tidied Ruan Zhimian’s hair, his breath still scalding hot. His deep, gloomy phoenix eyes turned up slightly before he showed restraint, looking away and pressing the button for the car’s pheromone purifier.
Finally, he pulled the young master—who was now completely covered in the Alpha’s amber pheromones—back into his embrace. His cold, pale finger pad slid across the corner of the boy’s eye to wipe away his tears, coaxing him word by word. “Thank you, Mianmian.”
“If it weren’t for Mianmian, these past two days would have been very difficult for me.”
Ruan Zhimian shielded his eyes with his hand, held by Shi He from behind.
For some reason, while his reaction had been very mild yesterday, he felt a bit dizzy today.
Ruan Zhimian barely managed to steady his mind and spoke with Shi He slowly.
His phone vibrated. It was a call from his brother, Ruan Xubai. Ruan Zhimian originally wanted to sit up to answer it, but the Alpha holding him showed absolutely no intention of letting go.
“?”
The Alpha’s dark eyes were deep and thick. He lowered his head, gently nuzzling the back of the neck of the person in his arms with his chin, meaning he wouldn’t let go.
The call had already connected, and Ruan Xubai was saying, “Mianmian, I’m heading home now. Where are you? Do you want me to pick you up?”
“I was just out playing earlier, and I’m on my way home now.”
Ruan Xubai instructed him to be careful on the road.
Ruan Zhimian obediently agreed. He hung up the phone and said, “I need to go home.”
Shi He held him for another ten minutes before finally letting go, looking as if he had a severe dependency disorder. After the boy got out of the car, Shi He reappeared by the car window. “Tomorrow morning, I’ll come find you.”
Dizzily, Ruan Zhimian replied, “Okay.”
They had agreed on two days, and he wouldn’t break his word.
The driver started the car, and the young master leaned against the window to wave at him, only lying back down on the seat after Shi He’s figure vanished from sight.
He closed his eyes tightly, sleeping all the way home.
…
When Ruan Zhimian arrived home, it was just 6:30 PM. He was the only person in the entire house. After closing his eyes to rest, his spirit returned to normal.
Carrying the gift boxes, he walked through the rooms one by one, placing them all on the bedside cabinets before heading upstairs to change into another set of clothes.
It had been nearly two days since Qiuqiu could only watch him from the system space. Now that it finally got to see him in reality, it ran several laps around Ruan Zhimian.
[It’s good that you’re okay.]
[I heard from other systems that when their hosts get their identities exposed and get caught back, they all get “this and that” done to them.]
Ruan Zhimian’s footsteps paused, slightly petrified: “??”
[Mianmian, the scent of pheromones on you is too strong. You need to use the purification spray.]
[I’ll take a shower and change clothes before spraying it.]
Ruan Zhimian needed to calm down.
The moment Ruan Zhimian stepped into the bathroom, he stayed for half an hour. When he came out, quite a few strangers had appeared in the large garden downstairs of the Ruan residence, collectively carrying several large crates into the main hall.
The butler said, “Young Master, Young Master Han had these delivered. I was originally planning to refuse, but they claimed you would like them.”
Ruan Zhimian had changed into a cotton pajama set. He dried his hair and went downstairs, not forgetting to use the purification spray. “Open them up and let’s see what they are.”
The expressions of all the servants present, as well as the butler, were all: “…”
Ruan Zhimian spoke with a light mock. He let go of his hand and closed the crate. “Precious memories.”
“Close them up. Put what my father brought back here in a moment. Tomorrow, we will return all of it to them twofold.”
Han He’an might be truly stingy, or he might really be broke. Teng Yu had said that Han He’an’s recent days in the Han family hadn’t been very pleasant.
Serves him right.
Han He’an’s matter was just an interlude, and Ruan Zhimian quickly put it behind him.
Outside the French windows, a drizzling rain began to fall.
Ruan Xubai hadn’t returned yet. He made a few calls, and Ruan Xubai’s voice sounded quite different. “Mianmian, I ran into an acquaintance. I’ll be back a bit late, you go ahead and eat first.”
“It’s fine, Brother.”
As long as he was okay. The butler came to tell Ruan Zhimian again that due to flight delays caused by the rain, his parents and aunt were stuck in the neighboring city visiting his grandparents and would arrive home around 9:00 PM.
Ruan Zhimian ate a bowl of meatball soup and went upstairs.
Holding Qiuqiu, he sat by the glass window of his bedroom balcony, listening to the sound of the rain. With only a single small lamp turned on, he pondered tomorrow’s arrangements and his departure plan.
Qiuqiu asked, “Mianmian, you still haven’t told me where you want to go.”
The light was dim, with half the illumination casting onto Ruan Zhimian’s profile. Hugging his knees, he was somewhat lost in thought. “The seaside. I’ve never seen the ocean with my own eyes.”
Qiuqiu said, “Then we’ll go to the seaside.”
Ruan Zhimian merely nodded, his expression not as joyful as when he first arrived. Qiuqiu understandingly leaned against his chest like a squishy plush toy.
Ruan Zhimian’s phone vibrated; it was a video call invitation from Shi He.
Ruan Zhimian sat up straight and reached out to tap it open.
In the camera lens, there were two drenched little kittens, one white and one black, meowing softly with eyes that had only recently opened.
Outside the glass door, the rain grew heavier. Shi He held a biscuit packaging box to shelter them, cradling them in his arms. “I went downstairs to buy ingredients and found them in the flower bushes.”
Ruan Zhimian said, “They’re so small.”
“I just consulted a pet doctor. I’ll dry them off first, feed them some goat milk, and take them to the hospital for a checkup tomorrow.”
Ruan Zhimian didn’t say much, his pair of beautiful, pure eyes quietly watching the screen as Shi He wiped the rainwater off the kittens, dried them with a hairdryer, and fed them goat milk.
Finally, they were placed in a cardboard box lined with a soft cushion.
Shi He initially hadn’t planned on bringing them back; normally, he would just drive the kittens to the hospital and have them find adopters.
He never used to do such meticulous things.
Shi He didn’t possess the energy to love this world, but when he squatted down and saw the little white cat crawling toward him, he had thought of Ruan Zhimian.
Before the call disconnected, Ruan Zhimian leaned close to the microphone and said to him, “Shi He, you’re so good.”
He shielded the corners of his stinging eyes, burying his head to conceal the sadness in his voice.
Look, even without Ruan Zhimian, Shi He was still exceptionally good. He hadn’t received much kindness, and having grown up in such an environment, he was still a gentle person at his core.
At 9:30 PM, Ruan Zhimian’s bedroom door was gently pushed open.
CEO Ruan, Ruan Jiarong, was dressed in a black suit. She was tall, with heroic features and an inherent air of elegance.
She walked in stealthily and sat by the bedside. The moment her gaze landed on Ruan Zhimian, her expression softened considerably, no longer the resolute and swift CEO Ruan, but Ruan Zhimian’s mother.
Ruan Zhimian opened his eyes. “Mom.”
“Darling, your dad and I both received your gifts.”
“Lately, your grandfather’s old factory is undergoing a transition, so I have to keep an eye on it for him. I didn’t get a chance to talk to my darling about breaking off the engagement.”
Ruan Zhimian’s hand was held by CEO Ruan, and he was pulled into a warm embrace—the unmistakable warmth of family. “Baby, no matter what decision you make, Mom supports you. The things you asked your father to do, he has completely organized them all. I’ve placed them on your desk.”
“I’ll go with you tomorrow. The Han family dared to bully my Mianmian like this; I won’t let them off easily.”
