Chapter 210: Mutation (Part VIII)
The vehicle drove out of the city center and came to a stop before a massive, cold structure in the suburbs.
The towering bronze walls and iron bastions stretched as far as the eye could see.
This had once been the city’s largest military base; now, it served as a sanctuary for those with capital.
Aside from a few who controlled the wealth, the base housed no idlers. It was occupied strictly by bio-pharmaceutical researchers, medical staff, agricultural scientists, or soldiers.
Everyone in the base carried an identification tag, and entry required passing through multiple security checkpoints.
Contamination levels were centrally tested every morning.
Except for the armed personnel who had been injected with special reagents, anyone whose contamination value exceeded the mutation threshold would be sent to the furnace for incineration.
However, before a total mutation occurred, this place remained the safest and most resource-abundant location currently available.
The army Bai Yinnian belonged to was named 【Divine Wings】.
It consisted of fewer than a hundred people.
Except for Bai Yinnian, every member was a specialized soldier who had mutated after being injected with special reagents.
They were the backbone of the effort to clear out the consequences of 【Heaven’s Punishment】.
They were the core force protecting the entire sanctuary.
They were managed directly by the sanctuary’s highest level of leadership.
The armored vehicles used by 【Divine Wings】 bore special markings. Upon entering the sanctuary, security only needed to verify the personnel on board; there was no need for the occupants to disembark for physical sign checks.
Lin Xu drove the car to the first checkpoint and lowered the window.
The duty officer checked the list of personnel, then frowned as he looked at Bai Yinnian.
“There’s an extra person.”
Bai Yinnian produced his credentials. “I brought him back. I take full responsibility if anything goes wrong.”
Upon seeing Bai Yinnian’s ID, the officer saluted and immediately allowed them through.
After the vehicle entered the sanctuary and parked in the underground lot, Xiao Ji opened his eyes the moment the engine died.
“Are we here?”
Bai Yinnian gave a grunt of affirmation. He got out first, took Xiao Ji’s wheelchair out, and set it up properly before opening the door on Xiao Ji’s side. He lifted the man out and placed him in the chair.
Keeping one hand on the wheelchair, he looked at Lin Xu.
“Tell the Commander-in-Chief that I’ve brought the person back. I’ll bring Xiao Ji to see him tomorrow morning.”
Lin Xu nodded. “Got it. Understood.”
With that, the two men parted ways.
Bai Yinnian pushed Xiao Ji around the sanctuary first, introduced him to the structure of the base.
Along the way, everyone they encountered stopped and stood to the side upon seeing Bai Yinnian, waiting for him to pass before continuing their business.
Many people cast curious glances at Xiao Ji.
However, not a single person stepped forward to ask questions.
Bai Yinnian simply said, “This is the special treatment afforded to 【Divine Wings】. If you want to live a peaceful life in this sanctuary, never offend 【Divine Wings】.”
“Welcome to the team.”
Xiao Ji remained indifferent to the prestige, merely saying flatly, “What about your internal personnel?”
Bai Yinnian was candid. “Internal competition is normal. In this environment, higher status and greater merit mean a larger share of allocated resources.”
He turned down a small path lined with several low-rise western-style houses.
They were only two stories tall, but each was a detached unit with its own small courtyard.
Bai Yinnian pushed open a gate, led Xiao Ji inside, and used his fingerprint to unlock the front door, gesturing to the interior.
“This is my resource.”
It was a beautiful small villa.
The area wasn’t particularly large, but it looked very cozy—almost like a hidden paradise carved out within this cold military base.
Not far to the north of these small courtyards stood a large building.
That was where the ordinary soldiers lived, with four to eight people per room.
Bai Yinnian pointed toward that building. “Based on your current qualifications, even if you join 【Divine Wings】, you would normally only be allowed to live there.”
Xiao Ji remained noncommittal. “Am I supposed to say thank you?”
Bai Yinnian understood his meaning.
If Xiao Ji hadn’t joined them, he would be outside on his own, free to live in whatever kind of house he pleased.
He cleared his throat. “That’s not necessary, but I’m glad you accepted my invitation.”
Since they weren’t well-acquainted yet, Xiao Ji maintained a cold, unapproachable air. He gave a dry laugh.
“You’re celebrating too early.”
Bai Yinnian also laughed. “What kind of way is that to talk?”
Once inside, Bai Yinnian closed the door behind them and pushed Xiao Ji to a bedroom on the ground floor, opening the door.
“You’ll stay here.”
Xiao Ji surveyed the room’s furnishings; it clearly looked like it had been lived in.
He frowned. “This is your room, isn’t it?”
Bai Yinnian grunted. “Your legs are inconvenient. You stay on the first floor; I’ll move upstairs.”
Xiao Ji looked back at him. “There are many things about me that are ‘inconvenient.’ Are you going to accommodate me in everything?”
Bai Yinnian wasn’t actually a man of good temper.
If anyone else had said that, his instinctive retort would likely have been:
“If it’s that inconvenient, then go die.”
But for some reason, when it came to Xiao Ji, he always managed to swallow his sharp words.
He even added politely, “I’ll try.”
It was already getting late.
Bai Yinnian checked the time and said to Xiao Ji:
“Get some rest early. I need to take you to see the Commander-in-Chief first thing tomorrow morning.”
Xiao Ji nodded and said to him:
“Thanks for the hard work.”
Bai Yinnian wasn’t fussy. He never wore pajamas to sleep and didn’t have many requirements. He closed the door to Xiao Ji’s bedroom and headed upstairs.
The room upstairs had been prepared long ago.
According to Bai Yinnian’s rank and conditions, the base allowed him to find a partner or even marry and have children.
However, Bai Yinnian had never harbored such thoughts. He had always maintained a cold facade, shutting out everyone who came after his resources.
He never expected that after over twenty years of being a bachelor, he would actually bring a man home to live with him.
When Xiao Ji left earlier, he had brought a few changes of clothes.
Bai Yinnian’s wardrobe was very clean. Aside from a few sets of identical combat uniforms and some fresh underwear and socks, there was nothing else.
Xiao Ji took out his own clothes, folded them, and placed them in the closet.
He then pulled out a set of white silk pajamas he had “acquired” for free a few days ago, stood up from his wheelchair, and walked into the bathroom.
He showered and changed into the pajamas. He picked a random book from the cluttered shelf in Bai Yinnian’s bedroom, turned on the bedside lamp, got into bed, and began to read quietly.
After a short while, a knock sounded at the door.
“Can I come in for a moment?”
Bai Yinnian had just been about to shower when he remembered that his bath towel, toiletries, and fresh clothes were all in the first-floor bedroom.
He heard Xiao Ji call out “Come in” from inside, and only then did he push the door open.
Under the dim light of the small desk lamp, Xiao Ji was leaning against the headboard in his white silk pajamas.
His legs were covered by the quilt, but only the bottom few buttons of his pajamas were fastened.
A large expanse of pale, beautiful chest was exposed right before Bai Yinnian’s eyes.
Bai Yinnian was used to the rough men in the army. In all his years, this was the first time he had encountered a man like Xiao Ji.
His gaze fell on Xiao Ji’s vaguely visible lower abdomen, traveled upward, and finally fixed on the prominent Adam’s apple in his slender neck.
It took a long moment for him to regain his composure. He shifted his gaze slightly, his Adam’s apple bobbing.
“I came to grab a few things.”
