Chapter 217
When Shen Shuyu arrived at the residential complex where Wen Jiafei lived, he didn’t rush upstairs. Instead, he went to the bakery first. He hadn’t told Wen Yue he was back, and having just gone through the incident with Yue Cheng at the hospital, he hadn’t had time to let her know he was coming to see her.
He asked the shop owner, who said Wen Yue was off today and was at home. Only then did he trudge upstairs with his gifts.
When he reached Wen Jiafei’s door and rang the bell, the door opened a moment later. Wen Yue had seen through the peephole that it was Shen Shuyu. She said with a smile, “You’re back.”
She glanced beside him but didn’t see the figure she hoped to see.
Shen Shuyu said, “He still has some business to finish in Siro. He’ll be back once it’s handled.”
“It’s cold out, come in and sit.” Wen Yue hid the trace of worry in her heart and warmly invited Shen Shuyu into the house.
The heating was very sufficient inside. As soon as Shen Shuyu entered, Meimei walked over, purring and rubbing her body against his legs.
Shen Shuyu handed the gift to Wen Yue, then bent down to pick Meimei up, giving her a few vigorous strokes. “Meimei, you’ve gotten heavier again.”
He sniffed her. “Did you just have a bath?”
Wen Yue laughed. “Yes, I just finished drying her fur. I didn’t expect you to come.”
It was a lucky coincidence. Shen Shuyu rubbed his chin against Meimei’s head. “Fragrant Meimei.”
Wen Yue couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of Shen Shuyu holding Meimei. She had him sit down while she went to the kitchen to bring out some freshly baked cookies.
As Wen Yue placed the cookies in front of him, Shen Shuyu said, “Auntie, don’t go to any trouble. I just came back this morning and wanted to drop by to see you.”
Shen Shuyu set Meimei down and looked at Wen Yue. “I bought Jiafei a new terminal and I’ve already saved your contact information for him. Don’t worry too much.”
Wen Yue nodded. “I know about that. He contacted me last night.”
Wen Yue reached out to hold Shen Shuyu’s hand and said warmly, “Shuyu, Auntie doesn’t even know how to thank you.”
It was all thanks to Shen Shuyu’s help this time; otherwise, she would still be at a loss in Siro, unable to see her son.
Shen Shuyu held her hand back. “Don’t say that. Oh, right—Jiafei’s gland has undergone secondary differentiation.”
“Secondary differentiation?” Wen Yue’s eyes brightened for an instant before they immediately turned red. She murmured, “That’s good. It’s good that it differentiated.”
She had thought her son would have to live with a damaged gland for the rest of his life. In this world, no matter how outstanding a disabled Alpha was, they would still suffer more than a normal Alpha.
Shen Shuyu waited for her to calm down. Once he saw Wen Yue had composed herself, he said, “Actually, there is one more thing I’m not sure I should tell you. It’s about Ning Shan. Are you willing to hear it?”
At the mention of Ning Shan’s name, Wen Yue’s expression shifted slightly, but her tone remained gentle. She said, “Go ahead.”
Shen Shuyu said, “He treated me to coffee before I came back. He didn’t say much, but I was afraid he might harm Jiafei, so I asked him if he was just waiting for Jiafei to clear those obstacles so he could control him.”
“He wouldn’t do that,” Wen Yue said softly.
Shen Shuyu looked at Wen Yue. “You know him very well.”
Wen Yue let go of Shen Shuyu’s hand. “Yes. We dated for a while when we were young. How can you not know someone you loved?”
Shen Shuyu hadn’t expected Wen Yue to tell him this so bluntly. For a moment, he didn’t know how to respond.
On the contrary, seeing his hesitant expression, Wen Yue chuckled. “Why are you getting nervous? Did he not tell you?”
Shen Shuyu scratched the side of his neck. “He didn’t. But based on how you two interacted and some of the things you told me before, I guessed there might have been some past entanglement. And Jiafei also told me that he was the one who helped you two leave Siro back then.”
“Yes, without him back then, Jiafei and I would probably be nothing but a pile of bones by now.” Wen Yue let out a sigh. “What did he want you to tell me?”
Shen Shuyu pursed his lips. Wen Yue said, “Shuyu, it’s okay. Just say it.”
Shen Shuyu said, “He said he hasn’t married or had children all these years, so he will focus on assisting Wen Jiafei.”
Wen Yue’s features softened as she fell into silence.
Shen Shuyu said, “Actually, I didn’t want to tell you this at first, but I felt this was a private matter between you and Ning Shan, and you had a right to know.”
Shen Shuyu had truly hesitated for a long time, but in the end, he spoke. He was just an outsider; they needed to resolve this themselves, and he had no right to make decisions for Wen Yue.
Wen Yue patted his arm. “Good boy. Have some cookies; Auntie just made them.”
Shen Shuyu gave an “Mn,” took a cookie, and stuffed it into his mouth. He squinted his eyes. “Very delicious.”
Wen Yue also smiled. “Thank you for the message.”
Shen Shuyu shook his head. “I didn’t really do anything.”
He asked again, “Then Auntie, do you need me to relay a message to him?”
Wen Yue shook her head. “No need, Shuyu. What’s past should stay in the past. There’s no need for a final conclusion.”
The moment she married Ning Bai, all possibility between her and Ning Shan had ended.
Shen Shuyu chewed the cookie and nodded. “Okay.”
Wen Yue asked more questions about Wen Jiafei, and Shen Shuyu answered them all patiently.
Shen Shuyu stayed at Wen Yue’s house until four-thirty. Wen Yue wanted him to stay for dinner, but he received a message from Shen Yisi.
[Shen Yisi: Yue Cheng has been moved to a regular ward. Come over to look after him; I have an emergency and need to leave for a bit.]
Shen Shuyu said, “Auntie, I won’t eat. I have to go back to the hospital.”
Wen Yue asked, “Are you feeling unwell somewhere?”
Shen Shuyu shook his head and briefly explained what had happened at the hospital today. Wen Yue murmured, “Little Doctor Yue is such a good person; to think he would suffer such a senseless tragedy. How about I go with you to see him?”
After all, Yue Cheng had taken great care of her when she was in critical condition.
Shen Shuyu shook his head. “No need. You should stay home and rest. It’s cold out. Yue Cheng-ge is fine now and just needs a few days of recovery. Besides, if you go see him, it might just add to his mental pressure.”
Shen Shuyu managed to dissuade Wen Yue. She thought for a moment and said, “Wait for me a minute.”
Having said that, she got up and went to the kitchen. Shen Shuyu followed her and saw Wen Yue was cleaning some large shrimp.
Seeing Shen Shuyu, Wen Yue explained, “New neighbors moved in across from us. They left a box of seafood at the door yesterday. I refused, but they insisted I take it. I had some for lunch today and it was very sweet. I’ll steam some for you to take to the hospital for Little Doctor Yue.”
“Auntie, you don’t need to trouble yourself. I’ll just have someone deliver something later,” Shen Shuyu said.
“It’s no trouble.” As Wen Yue spoke, her hands didn’t stop. “It only takes a few minutes. Besides, Jiafei isn’t home; I can’t finish all this alone. It would be a waste to throw it away, and that would be a pity.”
Since she put it that way, Shen Shuyu stopped trying to dissuade her.
Soon the steamed shrimp were ready. Wen Yue also prepared a light dipping sauce. “Eat more later, both you and Little Doctor Yue. You’ll only have the strength to recover once you’re full.”
Wen Yue handed the packed shrimp to Shen Shuyu. “Come back once you’re finished with your work. Auntie will make you something delicious.”
Shen Shuyu nodded. “Okay, thank you, Auntie.”
Wen Yue saw him to the door. She was about to close it after he entered the elevator when the door opposite opened. She looked over; her neighbor was an elder slightly older than her. She was about to greet them when she saw a very refined man wearing glasses standing there.
The man nodded to her. “Hello.”
Wen Yue recovered and smiled. “Hello.”
She thought for a moment. “And you are?”
The man had already closed the door. He said, “My name is Wei Yun. I am a newly hired teacher at Xierteng Academy.”
Wen Yue nodded. “Hello, I am Wen Yue.”
She thought for a bit and asked again, “That elder lady is…?”
Wei Yun said, “That is my mother. We just moved in.”
Wen Yue nodded. “I see. Please take care of us from now on.”
Wei Yun smiled slightly. “Please take care of us as well.”
By the time Shen Shuyu rushed back to the hospital, Shen Yisi had already left.
He found the private room where Yue Cheng was staying, only to find it was much livelier than he had imagined. Quite a few people were squeezed inside, inquiring about Yue Cheng’s condition.
Yue Cheng had a good temper, was handsome, possessed high emotional intelligence, and was a top-tier Alpha. His Omega and Beta colleagues at the hospital who didn’t have partners almost all had some level of affection for him. Now that he was injured, they had all rushed over to offer comfort.
Yue Cheng was nearly submerged by them. When he finally saw Shen Shuyu appear at the door, he frantically shot him a look.
He was injured, but these people were acting like they were attending his funeral. It was too intense; he couldn’t take much more.
