Chapter 70: The Shadow Ghost (2) part 1
Her body, hidden beneath the covers, trembled incessantly, letting out low, animal-like growls.
Jiang Si was momentarily speechless. Shi Danxing, thinking he was frightened, explained awkwardly, “Since she became like this, my wife’s mental state has been somewhat abnormal.”
“You think she’s gone mad?” Jiang Si asked.
Shi Danxing’s silence was a tacit admission.
Jiang Si didn’t enter immediately. He tilted his head and asked, “Where is the incense you took back? Bring two sticks and light them. Your wife looks like she can hardly take it anymore.”
The skin of the tumors on her face was stretched so thin it was turning white, the liquid inside nearly bursting forth.
Shi Danxing complied and hurried off to get the items.
Jiang Si stood by the door, waiting while he surveyed the room.
The light from the ceiling wasn’t as strong as the sun, and Mrs. Shi’s reaction was only violent at the beginning. Now, she had shrunk back under the corner of the quilt, covering her head and refusing to look at anyone.
The master bedroom was a suite, with the bedroom connected to a bathroom, but the bathroom door was closed, hiding the interior.
Jiang Si could only focus his gaze on the bedroom’s decor, scanning it item by item.
Shi Danxing’s wealth was fully evident here—exquisite and luxurious fixed furnishings, limited-edition soft furnishings bought with cold, hard cash. It was the picture of a man with more money than sense.
When Shi Danxing returned with two sticks of incense, he heard Jiang Si ask, “What wood is that table made of?”
Following the direction of his finger, Shi Danxing realized and said, “That’s Huanghuali. It was a gift from my father-in-law. He loves solid wood furniture, saying the scent of Huanghuali calms the mind and is perfect for the bedroom.”
“It looks small, but it actually weighs about two hundred jin.”
Jiang Si nodded slightly and retracted his gaze. He took the incense from Shi Danxing’s hand and pulled out a lighter to light it, slowly walking toward the woman on the bed.
He didn’t stick the incense in a holder; instead, he held it in his hand, pacing back and forth. The white smoke dissolved into the air, and before long, the entire bedroom was filled with the scent of the incense.
“The more evil influence there is on your body, the more effective this incense will be.” Jiang Si explained to the bewildered Shi Danxing, his gaze flickering over the mound under the covers. “Mr. Shi, please communicate with your wife. I need to examine her condition.”
“I’ll try my best.” Shi Danxing looked a bit troubled, giving Jiang Si a warning in advance: “As you saw just now, my wife’s emotions are very unstable. She might not cooperate.”
Jiang Si simply said, “Go ahead.”
Shi Danxing walked over tremulously. He pinched the corner of the quilt with two fingers, pausing after every slight movement as he waited for her reaction. Unexpectedly, even after the quilt was completely pulled back, she remained perfectly still.
He was momentarily filled with doubt and wonder, not expecting the incense to truly be this miraculous.
Mrs. Shi stared at him intently. Even as he cautiously pulled out an arm, she showed no reaction.
His anxious heart eased slightly. He coaxed his wife in a warm voice, taking the opportunity to roll up her sleeve, revealing the skin beneath the fabric.
The state of her arm was identical to that of her face—large patches of skin had cracked into jigsaw-like patterns, and the swollen, protruding tumors were packed densely together, with something unknown writhing inside.
It looked like countless human faces of various sizes were speaking to them.
Jiang Si narrowed his eyes and watched for a moment. Unable to hide a strange expression, he asked Shi Danxing, “Have you been to the hospital? What did the doctors say?”
“We went. The doctors said it’s a rare skin disease they’ve never seen before. Later, they invited experts for a consultation. The method they suggested was to try surgical removal, but that was later rejected.”
Shi Danxing felt helpless. “They said the distribution was too wide and the risk was too high.”
“That makes sense.” Jiang Si felt the doctors had been very thorough. He paused for a moment and then asked, “Second question: do you have children?”
Shi Danxing was stunned. “No. My wife’s health isn’t good, and I didn’t have the inclination either, so we chose to be DINKs.”
“Truly none? Unborn infants count too.”
“Truly none.” Shi Danxing was a bit angry. “I have no reason to hide something like this from you. All our relatives and friends know our situation.”
Seeing him like this, Jiang Si turned away, his interest waning. By now, the incense had nearly finished burning, so he stuck it into a nearby empty vase.
Just as he turned, he heard Shi Danxing suddenly scream in pain: “Ah—”
Instantly, Jiang Si focused his gaze. Mrs. Shi, who had been quiet just a moment ago, had actually opened her mouth and bitten down on Shi Danxing’s arm.
The tumors on Shi Danxing’s arm were bitten open by her. Following his arm and the corners of Mrs. Shi’s mouth, a fishy, foul-smelling, and sticky liquid flowed out, dripping onto the bed.
Jiang Si stepped forward, locking Mrs. Shi’s jaw with one hand and forcing her to open her mouth, pulling Shi Danxing’s arm out with force.
Now that he was even closer than before, he seemed to faintly hear a sound coming from the writhing tumors on the woman’s face.
It was a dense, fine whispering beneath Shi Danxing’s screams and groans.
The small openings splitting from the tumors were chattering and speaking.
They said: “Papa—Papa—”
Mrs. Shi’s blood-red mouth was wide open, the milky-white sticky liquid dripping from the corners, her chalk-white teeth glinting with a sharp light.
Her eyes, squeezed into the shadows by the tumors, rolled around. She was completely unconscious, acting purely on instinct.
Just like the sudden bite earlier—it was a reaction triggered by Shi Danxing’s words. Now that her jaw was controlled by Jiang Si, she struggled mechanically a few times before falling back into a daze.
On the other side, Shi Danxing was still clutching his arm and crying out in pain. Beneath his fingers, the entire arm was coated in the sticky liquid, and the bitten-open tumors left pits and hollows on the surface, looking both disgusting and smelling foul.
Jiang Si asked him, “Did your wife have sudden outbursts like this before?”
“Never before. This is the first time.” Shi Danxing gave a bitter smile, looking at the person on the bed with a sense of tolerance. “Before she got sick, she was actually a very gentle person. Sigh, it’s all because of this thing!”
Jiang Si gently released Mrs. Shi and pulled a pillow over for her to lean against. He turned around and said, “Stop talking.”
“Huh?” Shi Danxing was frozen.
Jiang Si pursed his lips, staring at him coldly. “Mr. Shi, I thought you truly wanted to invite me here to solve the problem.”
“But this attitude of yours, telling me thirty percent of the truth and hiding seventy percent, really makes me unhappy.”
“I… I didn’t—”
Jiang Si made a gesture, telling him to shut up and listen. “Allow me to remind you: just because your wife can’t conceive doesn’t mean you can’t. You’re the only one who knows what you’ve done.”
In front of Mrs. Shi, Jiang Si had spoken completely plainly, giving him no chance to hide.
“If you still don’t want to tell the truth, then next week will be the day you die. Think about it yourself.”
This caused his face to change even more than when Jiang Si had exposed him earlier. Perhaps this was the true sore spot.
He hesitated for a few seconds, his gaze drifting. He gritted his teeth and said, “I did have an affair in the past, but we really haven’t seen each other in a long time. Since her child was lost, I haven’t seen her again.”
“Who is she?”
Shi Danxing had played the role of a good husband for so long that he had even started to believe it himself. Now that his secret had been dug up, his expression was extremely unnatural. He turned his head and said gloomily, “She was my soulmate. I’ve forgotten when I met her, but from the moment we met, I fell for her uncontrollably. She was very beautiful, the most beautiful person in the world.”
“The child was lost before I got this disgusting thing. It was very sudden, and I was completely unaware. When I wanted to pursue it further, I found she had disappeared. To this day, I’ve been looking for her everywhere.”
Jiang Si arched an eyebrow. “So you still haven’t said what kind of person she is?”
“She is my lover!” Shi Danxing repeated obsessively.
Hearing this, Mrs. Shi somehow managed to grab another cup and hurl it at Shi Danxing’s head.
Crash!
