Chapter 59: Recommendation — Storm Nearly Jumped Up
Storm recommended a private kitchen in Nancheng that was delicious and reasonably priced.
After sending the location to President Zhang, they drove there. Along the way, Zuo Chi received eight hundred phone calls.
“Is this Coach Zuo Chi? I’m the head of Team TIG. I was wondering if Coach Zuo has any interest in transferring after the Spring Split? Although we were eliminated in the Quarterfinals, we have plenty of transfer funds. If Coach Zuo is willing to come…”
“Hello, Coach Zuo Chi. Sorry to bother you. I’m from Team GO. Our team is looking for a new head coach for the new season, and our boss thinks you’re the perfect fit. When would you be interested in visiting our base? I can assure you the compensation will be top-tier for the league…”
“Coach Zuo, we are…”
Even though the cubs couldn’t hear the voice on the other end, they quickly figured out from his answers that other teams were trying to poach their Coach Zuo.
Good players were certainly in demand, but the esports world never lacked geniuses.
However, good coaches were generally monopolized by the top teams. It had been years since a rookie coach had appeared and led a team into the Semifinals.
Any team that was unsatisfied with their results and wanted to take a step further next season couldn’t hold back—so what if VEX had a new owner? They were willing to offer a higher price! Better treatment! More sincerity!
The lively atmosphere in the van gradually quieted down with every ring of his phone. The cubs exchanged glances, their thoughts practically written on their faces.
During a gap between calls, Zuo Chi hurriedly posted a status on WeChat Moments: [I’m very happy at VEX and have no plans to leave for now. ^v^]
Once the post was out, his phone finally went quiet.
“Those teams are so devious!” Fugui said through gritted teeth. “They only think about poaching our Coach Zuo! Don’t they have their own coaches?! Why steal ours?!”
Wu Yang, who rarely agreed with Fugui, chimed in: “Exactly!”
Beyond leaned over the back of his seat. “Even though Coach Zuo isn’t leaving, shouldn’t our team give him a raise?”
“Now Beyond is speaking my language!” Zuo Chi couldn’t help but laugh. “Don’t worry, President Zhang has already adjusted my salary. The offer is very sincere.”
Fugui: “Ning-god, why are you so quiet? Do you have your headphones on?”
Ning Luzhao looked up, calm and composed. “What is there to say? The coach already promised me that even if he leaves VEX, he’s taking me with him.”
Fugui: “?”
“Wu Yang! Beyond! Look at him! He’s bragging, isn’t he?!”
After a delicious late-night meal, they returned to the hotel and slept until they woke up naturally. The next day, he and Land went to the hotel room where the BLUE team was staying.
It was just down the hall, very close. They arrived holding breakfast they had just packed from the hotel restaurant.
When they arrived, Storm was standing at the door. Both sides looked at the breakfast in each other’s hands and laughed. “Coach Zuo, Land, morning! Our second-team kids are already waiting inside.”
The two kids they had met at the previous dinner and several other second-team players were already at their computers. Seeing them enter, they sat up straighter.
They exchanged greetings.
“Coach Zuo, how do you want to do this… let them play a few training matches with us? If you see any issues, just say it! I can’t vouch for their skill level, but they’re good kids—sturdy and not sensitive!”
“Okay.”
Back during the group stage draw, Zuo Chi had tried using the system to check the attribute entries of players from other teams.
But the prompt he received was: [This player does not belong to the Host’s team, is not a trainee, a free agent, or a listed player. No permission to view attribute entries!]
Perhaps the system had intelligently detected Storm’s invitation, because today, he could see the attribute entries of BLUE’s second-team players.
[Position: Mid Lane. Gray Entry: King of Last-Hitting (His match stats are always flashy and look impressive at first glance. However, as for his impact in-game… perhaps it lies in stealing his teammates’ kills?)]
Zuo Chi paused his steps and looked at Storm’s expectant expression. Forget it, he’d watch the player’s performance in the training matches first.
[Position: Jungler. Blue Entry: Carry Jungle Specialist (His carry jungle heroes are exceptional, enough to be rated as a Golden Entry. However, his tank junglers are terrible, enough to be rated as a Gray Entry.)]
“This jungler… his carry jungles are good. Let’s see his tank jungles in the next game.”
BLUE’s second-team jungler shivered. “Tank jungles? Coach Zuo, I’m not very good at tank jungles. The main thing is that tank jungles aren’t picked often, so I haven’t practiced them much…”
Before Zuo Chi could speak, Storm had already given the second-team jungler a light smack on the head. “What are you mumbling about? Tank jungles might not be meta right now, but judging by the league’s patch trends, there’ll be a major update by next year at the latest. If you can’t play a single tank jungler by then, how do you expect to be a starter?!”
The second-team jungler: “I’ll start practicing today!”
[Position: Support. White Entry: Carry at Heart (Even though he’s a support, he has the heart of a carry. He often ignores his own carries to dive into the fight. When it works, they win; when it doesn’t, they lose.)]
…
After five training matches, Zuo Chi combined the attribute entries with their performance and spoke with each of BLUE’s second-team players.
The players’ expressions went from “what can you see in just five games” skepticism, to “the rookie coach who beat us really has something,” to “Master, I have seen the light!”
Ning Luzhao soloed several rounds with the “lopsided” second-team jungler, leaving the boy thoroughly impressed.
Storm handed them two cups of warm water. “I’ve troubled you two today. I don’t know how to thank you, but I’ll say this: I’m definitely coming to cheer for VEX at your next match!”
Zuo Chi pointed to the door, signaling for them to talk in the hallway.
While many players had room for improvement, BLUE needed high-ceiling players who were ready to start now. If they had to train the second-team kids for another year or two, Storm probably wouldn’t be able to hold out.
“Regarding the training matches just now, I’ll be direct. That jungler with the good carry skills—focus on his tank jungles. He has potential.”
Storm nodded repeatedly. “It was our oversight too. we only focused on having them practice meta heroes. If you hadn’t asked today, Coach Zuo, I wouldn’t have known he was so lopsided.”
Zuo Chi discussed several other players before hesitating. “Actually, I know a good young mid-laner I can recommend to you.”
Except for Wall, the cubs in their team were only eighteen or nineteen. If they were to add to the second team, it was more appropriate to find young trainees.
“What?!” Storm almost jumped up to bow to them. “What’s the young mid-laner’s name? Which team? Is he a trainee? I’ll have our manager invite him for a tryout immediately!”
“What’s his name… I actually don’t know! But he’s a former trainee, and he was the champion of a large-scale event at the Nan City Spring Festival Market. If you contact the market staff, they’ll definitely have his information!”
“Nan City Spring Festival Market? Oh—is it the one where you and Land were on the trending searches?”
“Yes. He used to be a jungler, but his mid-lane is more talented. I’m not sure if he’s tried playing mid since then, but you can try contacting him.”
“Great, great. I’ll tell our manager right away—dinner together today? It’s almost lunchtime.”
Zuo Chi checked the time. “No, no. We have a flight back to Nan City this afternoon. We’re just going to grab some takeout and head to the airport.”
“Then I won’t keep you. We have to have a meal together next time we meet!”
They had originally planned to stay in Haishi for another day, but after the match ended yesterday, President Zhang mentioned a new endorsement deal. The team’s popularity was skyrocketing; not to mention the players’ personal follower counts, the official team Weibo had gained hundreds of thousands of followers overnight.
The comment section was filled with new fans asking for team merchandise.
Taking some high-quality endorsements was beneficial for both the players and the team’s development.
Additionally, President Zhang had sent over the materials for the new coaching staff members, giving Zuo Chi a lot of authority to choose.
In short, it was busy. They had to get back to Nan City immediately.
There were three endorsement offers in total: a snack brand, a keyboard/mouse brand, and a body wash brand.
He sent the materials to the [Group Chat: Summer Won’t Scatter] for the cubs to look over.
[Zuo Chi: We still have to prepare for the Semifinals, so time is tight. My plan is to pick one of the three for the shoot and either decline the others or delay them until after the Spring Split.]
[Zuo Chi: Everyone, look over the details of each endorsement.]
[Fugui: I don’t think the keyboard brand is good. I’ve used theirs before; the design is nice but the feel is terrible and it’s expensive. Low cost-performance.]
Fugui was the team’s keyboard enthusiast. According to him, he had over a dozen different models and brands at home.
[Zuo Chi: Fine, let’s rule that one out first.]
[Wu Yang: This snack brand seems very famous. I used to see the internet cafe boss selling it.]
[Beyond: I’ve eaten it too. Every flavor of their potato chips is delicious.]
[Wall: Should we buy some from the supermarket and taste-test them ourselves?]
After a personal tasting session, the cubs gave “Too Delicious” chips a high rating.
Zuo Chi made the final call: “Then we’re going with this one! Besides the commercial shoot, they also want to release some team peripherals to be included as gifts in the snack gift boxes.”
