Chapter 26: The Fainting Great-eared Rabbit
The matter of Yu An going to school was officially settled. After dinner, Wen Xun took Zhou Xia aside for a private conversation. Yu An didn’t know what they said, only that when Zhou Xia returned, he had a bracelet on his wrist.
The bracelet was a dull white. Yu An wasn’t interested; he gave it a cursory glance and looked away.
It wasn’t pretty. It wasn’t as good-looking as his sparkling gemstone bracelets.
However, the next morning, before Yu An left for the airport, Wen Xun pulled him into a room. He took out an identical white bracelet, lifted Yu An’s small, lotus-root-like hand, and placed it on his wrist.
Yu An pinched the bracelet; it was soft. He tilted his small head and asked, “Papa, what is this?”
“An ornament.”
Seeing the little fellow’s surprised eyes, Wen Xun explained in detail, “This bracelet can track your location and monitor whether the wearer is using their ability recklessly. But you don’t need to worry; I’ve already set the program. The data sent back won’t show anything unusual.”
Every time they went on a mission, Mutants would wear a monitoring bracelet. For others, it was just a useless ornament, but Yu An was different. If any abnormality was truly discovered, it would be over. Wen Xun had to tamper with it.
Additionally, a tracker was forcibly placed on Monday’s front paw.
Monday was very resistant to the thing binding its paw but didn’t dare to defy Wen Xun. It looked at Yu An with puppy eyes for help. [Don’t want this. Little Master, speak to Big Master.]
“Papa, Monday doesn’t want to wear this.” Yu An tugged on Wen Xun’s sleeve. “Can we take it off?”
Wen Xun: “No, An-an. Monday’s tracker is for emergencies. If the Base discovers something wrong with your tracker and repairs it, they will be monitoring Monday’s movements and body data instead.”
Yu An didn’t understand the stakes, only that Wen Xun was resolute. He gave up the idea of persuasion and went to his room to get a ham sausage to compensate Monday.
With food, Monday didn’t mind the strange feeling on its paw anymore and wagged its tail joyfully while eating.
The team sending Zhou Xia back to Kyoto was led by Fu Yunshu. Since it was his first mission and the team consisted of children, the Base specifically added a veteran: a middle-aged man named Liu Ming, a B-rank Arbiter.
Yu An felt that Liu Ming looked very familiar at first glance, but he couldn’t remember exactly where he had seen him.
“Young Master, it’s been a long time.” Liu Ming’s attitude toward Yu An was very respectful, as if the person before him wasn’t just a child of a few years, but a top boss who decided his salary.
Yu An couldn’t recall and was embarrassed to ask directly. He clutched Lin Huaichen’s neck awkwardly. “H-hello.”
Lin Huaichen reminded him: “When we went to Luoyun Village to pick you up, he was the one who went with Ling Xingcheng.”
Memory finally flooded back. Yu An suddenly realized—it was him.
It wasn’t that Liu Ming’s appearance had changed; Mutants aged much slower than ordinary people. Even at forty or fifty, he looked no different from a youth in his twenties or thirties. It was mainly because Yu An had been too small at the time to remember things.
Liu Ming took out a cage and asked Lin Huaichen respectfully, “Patriarch Lin, this is the Xenogenic rabbit that infected Zhou Xia. How should we dispose of it?”
Lin Huaichen scanned the cage. “Ask Fu Yunshu. He’s the leader of your mission.”
Liu Ming nodded and went to discuss the relevant matters with Fu Yunshu.
Yu An stared at the little rabbit in the cage. It was a palm-sized grayish-white rabbit. Its ears were twice the size of its body, making it look incredibly cute and adorable.
The Great-eared Rabbit was lying listlessly in the cage. There was a high-intensity electric net on the cage that distorted space; it couldn’t dig a black hole to leave, which made the naturally burrow-loving rabbit very unhappy.
Paws are itchy. Want to dig a hole.
Suddenly, it sensed a natural predator nearby and twitched its little nose in the air.
The tiny rabbit’s head was full of big questions. It had specifically chosen a world with no natural predators; why was the aura of a predator even more intense here?
Anxious, the little rabbit flicked its large ears with its short paws. It looked up and accidentally met Yu An’s gaze for a few seconds.
Yu An had long been curious about the rabbit. Now that he saw it, a massive wave of fragrant scent hit him. Yu An’s stomach, which had just finished breakfast, was hungry again. His lake-blue eyes were full of desire for the little rabbit, and he couldn’t help but swallow his saliva.
So fragrant. Much more fragrant than Brother Zhou Xia.
“Ying-ying-ying!” The Great-eared Rabbit cowered into the deepest corner of the cage, covering its eyes with its ears as if being unable to see Yu An would make it not afraid.
The Great-eared Rabbit had many natural predators, but the greatest was the Ushatos. It should be said that the Ushatos were the natural predators of all Xenogenics. They were powerful enough as it was, but they were also exceptionally good at eating; they were almost always in the process of searching for food.
For a small Xenogenic like the Great-eared Rabbit, they could eat a whole clan at once.
The little rabbit was heartbroken. It looked at Yu An with watery eyes. Seeing he was still staring, the little rabbit let out a tragic “Ying!” and collapsed flat in the cage.
Bunny’s life ends today.
Yu An pointed anxiously at the rabbit in the cage. “Papa, the rabbit fell down.”
Lin Huaichen looked over, raised an eyebrow in surprise, and tapped on the cage with his finger. The rabbit had no reaction.
Liu Ming was shocked. He hurriedly took the rabbit out of the cage and gave it a shake. The rabbit’s eyes were tightly shut; it had clearly fainted.
But it had been perfectly fine before they came!
Liu Ming could only “treat a dead horse as if it were alive” and use a finger to press on the rabbit’s chest, pumping it over and over to give it CPR.
After a while, the rabbit finally opened its eyes, but its gaze was vacant, as if it had suffered a massive shock.
Zhou Xia, who hadn’t spoken, raised his hand weakly. “Don’t scare it. Rabbits are very cowardly.”
Looking at the rabbit in Liu Ming’s palm, Zhou Xia inexplicably felt some kind of unspeakable connection between himself and the rabbit. That was how he knew the rabbit had been scared into a faint.
But the key was that no one had scared the rabbit.
Yu An had originally thought so too. This rabbit was way too cowardly.
[You were the one who scared it into a faint.] Klold poked His small head out from the pocket and told the bewildered cub rationally, [Great-eared Rabbits are cowardly and can’t take a fright. What they fear most are natural predators.]
Yu An’s eyes widened in surprise. [Am I its natural predator?]
[Yes.]
Yu An: “…”
So the culprit who scared the rabbit was him.
Looking at the dying little rabbit, Yu An silently looked away, burying his head in Lin Huaichen’s neck. If he didn’t look at it, the little rabbit shouldn’t be afraid anymore.
Lin Huaichen looked down at little Yu An and patted his back. All children liked rabbits, so An-an was scared by the rabbit’s sudden fainting?
What a kind child, Lin Huaichen was moved all by himself.
Liu Ming really couldn’t figure out what the rabbit was afraid of. He looked left and right, finally fixing his gaze on Monday. It seemed normal for a rabbit to be afraid of a dog.
Monday squatted obediently at Lin Huaichen’s feet. Noticing Liu Ming’s gaze, it barked, “Woof!”
The little rabbit twitched once.
Good. Case closed.
Liu Ming attributed the little rabbit’s fainting to Monday. He put the rabbit back in the cage, looked around, and gave the cage to Fu Yunshu. “Captain, why don’t you hold it?”
He didn’t dare hold the rabbit anymore. What if another accident happened and it died in his hands?
Fu Yunshu looked down at the rabbit, took off his jacket to cover the cage, gripped the handle, and looked at Lin Huaichen. “Uncle Lin, can we leave now?”
Lin Huaichen nodded and led the way onto the plane while holding Yu An. After taking their seats, Yu An was very interested in the upcoming school life. He was finally going to school!
Lin Huaichen was looking at school data on his tablet, his brow furrowing deeper and deeper. “…An-an, your school lets out at four in the afternoon. I’ll send a car to pick you up. You should come straight home with me in the evening.”
Yu An was confused. “But Grandpa Gu said the school has places to stay.”
“It’s too shabby,” Lin Huaichen said with disgust. “Three or four students squeezed into one room, and only one bathroom. A bed that’s only 1.8 by 2 meters. An-an, these living conditions are just too poor.”
In the back seat, Liu Ming silently refuted in his heart. The dorms were loft-style with beds over desks, had private bathrooms, and were fully equipped with water heaters and air conditioning. How could that be considered poor?
But thinking of Lin Huaichen and Yu An’s status, those conditions probably did seem insufficient to them.
As he listened, Yu An didn’t show the resistance Lin Huaichen expected. Instead, he was full of excitement. “I think it’s great! Papa, I’ve never slept in a room with someone else before. It sounds so interesting.”
Before Yu An was picked up, he had lived with Monday. Afterward, he had his own small room, and Lin Huaichen and Wen Xun only kept him company before he slept.
A dormitory experience was something Yu An had never had. In an instant, his interest grew even more, and he felt a faint anticipation for his future school life.
Lin Huaichen was still worried. After a thought, he had his assistant buy an apartment right next to Yu An’s school and fully stock it with daily necessities. If Yu An didn’t like dormitory life, he could move out at any time.
Yu An couldn’t decline, so he smiled and gave Lin Huaichen a kiss on the cheek, rubbing his small head against his chin like a kitten. “Thank you, Papa. I like Papa the most.”
Lin Huaichen pulled him into a loving embrace. “If anything happens, have Little White send us a message.”
“I know.”
Kyoto Boya School was a prestigious private school with expensive tuition. The students who could enter were either exceptionally intelligent or exceptionally wealthy. Zhou Xia was the former.
Looking at the grand gates of Boya School and being in a familiar environment, Zhou Xia finally felt a sense of reality. A slight smile appeared on his face.
But in the next second, a long, slender, well-proportioned hand rested on his shoulder. Fu Yunshu’s tone was indifferent. “I and the other pair of twins will be transferring into your class. During this time, you cannot reveal our identities. Otherwise…”
He grabbed Zhou Xia’s hand and lifted it, the threat in his deep black eyes fully evident. “You will spend the rest of your life in the Base.”
Zhou Xia nodded while shrinking back. “I-I swear, I absolutely won’t leak anything. I’m very obedient. So, how long will you be staying here?”
“Three months.”
Zhou Xia let out a massive sigh of relief. He only had to endure for three months to be free.
Fu Yunshu took the Great-eared Rabbit out of its cage. To prevent it from escaping, he coiled the Snow Snake around its neck and poked the snake’s head. “Watch it.”
The Snow Snake flicked its tongue.
Fu Yunshu ignored the little rabbit that was about to faint from fright again and put both Xenogenics into his backpack.
On the other side, Yu An nodded repeatedly under Lin Huaichen’s earnest instructions, holding the small backpack the assistant had bought for him and the thermos Wen Xun had stuffed into his hands that morning. “Don’t worry, Papa. I will study hard and won’t embarrass you.”
“What are you saying? It’s fine if you can’t get into it.” Lin Huaichen was very open-minded about Yu An’s grades. He was concerned about something else. “School isn’t like home. Without Butler Ide around, eat if you’re hungry, drink if you’re thirsty, and if you’re sleepy, just sleep on your desk.”
“If you find sleeping on the desk uncomfortable, just go back to the apartment to sleep. Take the key.” Lin Huaichen stuffed the key into Yu An’s hand, his brow full of worry. He looked more nervous than Yu An, the first-time student. “Whatever you do, don’t wrong yourself. Papa has already paid the fees.”
Yu An’s expression went blank for a few seconds. Instinct told him Lin Huaichen’s words were a bit strange, but he was an obedient, good child, so he nodded with a serious face. “Okay! I’ve remembered it all.”
“Such a good baby.”
Liu Ming, who had heard the whole thing: “…”
I don’t quite understand these rich people.
Lin Huaichen kissed Yu An’s forehead and took Monday’s leash. “Then I’ll take Monday for now. If you decide not to come home tonight, I’ll send Monday to the apartment. There’s plenty of dog food there.”
Lin Huaichen arranged everything perfectly. There wasn’t much for Yu An to worry about; he just needed to study in peace.
Shortly after Lin Huaichen left, Gu Yixing and Gu Ersheng also arrived. The two gave Yu An a close hug. “We can go to school together!”
Yu An also nodded with anticipation.
However, several teachers from Boya came out to receive them and led Fu Yunshu, Gu Yixing, and Gu Ersheng away. The three said their goodbyes to Yu An one by one.
Fu Yunshu: “An-an can come find me to play anytime.”
Gu Yixing and Gu Ersheng: “If you get bored, I’ll take you to skip class.”
Actually, Yu An didn’t need anything, but watching them leave one by one, his head was full of questions. “…Aren’t you taking me with you?”
Unfortunately, Fu Yunshu and the others had already gone far and couldn’t answer Yu An’s question. Yu An could only look at Liu Ming, asking with a scrunched-up face, “Uncle, why didn’t the teachers take me to school?”
Liu Ming: “Maybe a separate teacher is coming to fetch you.”
“Why?”
“Because you are in Primary School, while Master Fu and the others are in Middle School.”
Yu An felt as if he had been struck by lightning. He pointed at himself blankly. “I have to go to school alone?”
No, Liu Ming was still here. Yu An’s eyes lit up again as he looked at him expectantly.
Liu Ming took out a pair of glasses and put them on. At first glance, he looked quite refined, like an intellectual. “Sorry, Young Master. My identity at this school is a teacher.”
Yu An: “…”
Before school had even started, Yu An was already weary of it at the school gates.
Is it still in time to chase after Papa’s car?
