Chapter 64: That Was Close, I Almost Outlived My Own Brother
I don’t know if you’ve ever experienced this.
If you know you have nothing to do tomorrow, you’ll wake up earlier than a rooster; but if you know you have a lot of work to do tomorrowâespecially the kind of “serious business” that requires your full focusâyour bodyâs self-preservation mechanism kicks in, and youâll inadvertently sleep until noon.
Jiang Qing was currently experiencing this first-hand.
He clearly remembered putting two electronic alarm clocks by his bed before sleeping. But this morning, when the first alarm rudely went off, he didn’t even open his eyes. He just instinctively reached out to fumble around the nightstand, and thenâ
Smash!
A crisp shattering sound. The world fell silent.
He rolled over and buried his face deeper into the soft pillow, an aura of “whoever wakes me dies” swirling around him.
The second alarm? It didn’t even get to make a full sound before it met the same fate as the first, becoming a hero sacrificed in the corner of the wall after a precise, unconscious throw from its master.
Thus, it wasn’t until the 10:07 AM sunlight forced its way through the gap in the curtains in an almost provocative display of brightness that Jiang Qing finally opened his eyes unwillingly.
A hangover-like headache and a chest full of unexplained rage made him find everything he saw unpleasant.
This was the standard state for Jiang Qing when his deep sleep was interruptedâespecially when it was indirectly interrupted by the realization of “having serious business”.
Commonly known as “wake-up rage,” and this was the top-tier version.
He stared at the ceiling with empty eyes.
Just then, the bedroom door was pushed open with a bang.
“Ge!!! Hurry up and get up!!! We agreed Iâd call you at nine today to go to the Lin family! Itâs past ten!! Why can’t I get through to your phone! Big Brother Linâs side…” Jiang Linmuâs voice barged into this low-pressure storm zone without warning.
Before the words could even finish.
A white object flew toward Jiang Linmu with lightning speed, hitting him squarely in the face.
The force was so great that Jiang Linmu let out an “ow” and instinctively clutched his nose, taking half a step back.
“Get outâ!!!”
Jiang Qing hadn’t even fully sat up. He only poked half his head out from the messy blankets, his hair sticking up in all directions.
Jiang Linmu shuddered at that freezing gaze. Clutching the pillow that had just hit his face, he instantly snapped awakeâand instantly wussed out.
Crap! He forgot!
His brother had a severe case of wake-up rage! Especially when he didn’t get enough sleep or was forced to wake up early for serious business! This was way scarier than his usual lectures!
That was a gaze that could actually kill!
Jiang Linmu immediately stood at attention, respectfully holding the pillow to his chest with both hands as he spoke at high speed:
“Ge! Iâm sorry! I was wrong! I shouldn’t have been loud! I shouldn’t have barged in! Please go back to sleep! No, no, no, what I mean is Iâve already explained to Big Brother Lin! I told him you had an urgent matter and would arrive late! He completely understands! He told you not to rush! Take your time! Your rest comes first! This lowly one won’t disturb you further!”
He finished in one breath, not daring to exhale as he observed Jiang Qingâs reaction.
Jiang Qing seemed to take a few seconds to process the information. He buried his face back into the pillow and let out a muffled sound of acknowledgment.
Jiang Linmu felt as if heâd been granted a reprieve, but he still didn’t dare move, asking softly:
“Then… Ge, do you want to sleep a bit longer? Or… should I get you something to drink?”
An impatient “Mm” came from under the blanket.
“Understood! Right away!” Jiang Linmu caught the hint immediately and backed out quietly, closing the door with extreme care.
It wasn’t until the door was fully shut that Jiang Linmu leaned against the wall and let out a long sigh, wiping away non-existent cold sweat.
Terrifying!
He almost died before the mission even began!
Twenty minutes later, when Jiang Linmu again brought a hot drink and clothes, knocking on the door with the delicacy of someone defusing a bomb, the low pressure inside seemed to have dissipated quite a bit.
“Come in,” Jiang Qingâs voice sounded. It was still a bit raspy, but he had regained his calm.
Jiang Linmu pushed the door open and saw Jiang Qing already standing by the window, changed into his clothes.
“Ge.” Jiang Linmu offered the drink with both hands.
Jiang Qing took it and had a big gulp.
“Documents,” he said concisely.
“In the living room, all ready,” Jiang Linmu replied immediately. “The carâs been checked too.”
“Mm,” Jiang Qing responded and put down the cup.
Jiang Linmu watched from the side, not daring to say more. He knew that while his brother appeared calm now, the frustration hadn’t entirely vanished; it was just being suppressed. It was best to be a quiet background character right now.
Having changed, Jiang Qing picked up the folder and car keys and walked to the door.
“Iâm leaving.”
“Ge!” Jiang Linmu couldn’t help but whisper a reminder. “Drive carefully.”
Jiang Qing paused and looked back at him.
“Mm.”
Watching the front door close, Jiang Linmu patted his chest.
That was close. He almost thought he was going to die young today.
Otherwise, his brother really would have had to be “the black-haired person sending off the black-haired person.”
Jiang Qing arrived at the Lin family manor an hour and a half later than the agreed time.
The moment he pressed the doorbell, he didn’t expect the door to open automatically.
“Qing-ge!!!! I missed you so much!!!”
Before Jiang Qing could even set foot inside, a massive creature accompanied by a cheerful, almost noisy voice lunged toward him!
It wasn’t Lin Siwu, nor was it Lin Siyu.
It was what looked like at least a hundred-pound, fluffy, and glossy…
Giant Alaskan Malamute?!
This furry leader of the “Three Huskies of the North” was clearly expressing twelve points of enthusiasm toward Jiang Qingâs arrival. Its two front paws landed directly on Jiang Qingâs waist, its wet nose lunging forward to rub against him while its tail wagged like a helicopter rotor.
Jiang Qing was pushed back half a step by this ten-ton “enthusiasm,” nearly losing his footing and falling down the stepsâwhich would have surely seen him reincarnated into another world as a savior.
“……”
Thanks, but Iâve received your enthusiasm.
The Alaskan grew even more excited, leaning in further to try and lick his hand.
“Lin Amao! Get down! No lunging!” Lin Siwuâs anxious voice came from inside, followed by hurried footsteps.
He rushed over to grab his beloved dog and pulled him back with all his might: “Iâm sorry, Iâm sorry! Qing-ge! He likes you too much! He went crazy the moment he heard the doorbell! I couldn’t hold him!”
Lin Siwu had clearly dressed up today, wearing a light-colored hoodie with his hair carefully styled, looking fresh and energetic. But because he was struggling with the dog, his collar was slightly crooked, and his face was a mix of apology, frustration with his dog, and a light in his eyes he couldn’t hide upon seeing Jiang Qing.
Lin Siwu had clearly overestimated his own strength and underestimated his dogâs explosive power when seeing his “crush.”
His fair face turned beet-red as he gritted his teeth and persisted, muttering:
“Lin Amao! Behave! Stop! Qing-ge doesn’t like this!”
Translatorâs Note: The idiom “black-haired person sending off the black-haired person” (éťĺäşşééťĺäşş – hÄifĂ rĂŠn sòng hÄifĂ rĂŠn) is a morbidly funny play on the traditional idiom “white-haired person sending off a black-haired person,” which refers to an elder burying a younger person. Since they are both young, Linmu is joking about his own demise! Also, “Three Huskies of the North” (éŞćŠä¸ĺť) is a popular Chinese internet term for Alaskans, Samoyeds, and Huskiesâknown for being adorable but incredibly “derpy” or “stupid.”
