Chapter 2: Mental Power Users are Precious
As long as the two of them stayed behind his back, sneaking around and “rolling in the sheets” consensually… then in the future, when he became a High-Level Jingshenli Zhe, he could not only dissolve the engagement but also stand on the moral high ground.
Hmph!
Nan Yu thought back to what he was like at fifteen, and his entire aura began to shift.
He became young and vibrant again, a smile constantly hanging on his face.
He was also supposed to be very fond of Bai Zhouyun, so…
“You’re here so early? I haven’t even finished getting ready!”
Nan Yun spoke up, “The aircraft is ready for you both. Go and come back quickly, and remember to stay safe.”
Of course, as Bai Zhouyun was about to take Nan Yu away, Nan Yun approached with a dark face, staring coldly at him with a threatening look. “You’re going to the Heiye Senlin this time?”
Bai Zhouyun was so intimidated he started breaking into a cold sweat. “Yes… that’s right, Dage.”
Nan Yun’s face darkened instantly. “Who are you calling Dage?!”
“I’m just giving you fair warning. If our Xiao Yu comes back with even a tiny scratch, I’m holding you responsible. You got that, brat?”
Bai Zhouyun rubbed his head awkwardly. “I know, I know… I mean, Brother Nan Yun, don’t worry. I will definitely protect Xiao Yu well.”
Nan Yun let out a cold snort and stopped speaking, but he remained there watching the two of them board the aircraft and depart.
“Sigh… this kid looks decent enough, but I just don’t know if he’ll be good to Xiao Yu…”
“Alright, why are you worrying so much? You should hurry to the academy. Isn’t there a trial at school this evening? Are you really prepared, Dage?”
Nan Zhen stood behind him, speaking with a playful tone.
Nan Yun’s mouth twitched. “Do I really need you to remind me? I’m leaving now. When Xiao Yu comes back tonight, remember to ask him properly if that brat tried to get fresh with him. If he did, tell me, and I’ll give him a good thrashing when I get back!”
Nan Zhen replied, “Don’t worry, Dage. I’ll definitely keep a close eye on that brat Bai Zhouyun.”
Only then did Nan Yun feel at ease enough to drive his own aircraft to school. After all, he couldn’t miss the trial organized by the academy.
In truth, neither of the two brothers liked that brat Bai Zhouyun very much. However, they couldn’t help the fact that the engagement between Bai Zhouyun and their cute, well-behaved younger brother, Nan Yu, had been set since childhood.
Furthermore, it hadn’t been set by their parents’ generation, but even earlier—by their grandfathers. Back then, the relationship between the Bai and Nan families was genuinely excellent, which led to this arrangement.
But even if the elders of the Bai family were good people, it didn’t mean their descendants would be. Especially since he had seen Bai Zhouyun making eyes at other mental power users at school several times.
If he hadn’t been able to tell that Bai Zhouyun was just a bit talkative rather than actually trying to start a relationship, he would have beaten him until even his parents wouldn’t recognize him.
Even so, he still never gave Bai Zhouyun a friendly face.
Nan Zhen watched his eldest brother leave the house before turning to head back inside. Returning to his laboratory, he turned on his Artificial Intelligence.
“Xiao Hei, help me check the current location of Xiao Yu’s aircraft. Remember to monitor it in real-time.”
Was he joking? How could the family feel at ease letting Nan Yu go out alone with Bai Zhouyun? Naturally, they had to place a tracking program on the aircraft.
Indeed, the aircraft Nan Yun had prepared had long since been implanted with a tracking program by Nan Zhen. No matter where it went, he would know at any time.
And if Bai Zhouyun ever tried to act like a beast, he, as the brother, would certainly not let the brat succeed. During combat classes at school, Bai Zhouyun might not lose quickly, but he definitely couldn’t be called strong. Though he was an Yineng Zhe (ability user), he belonged to the weaker category among them.
He was already eighteen, yet his strength was only at the Middle-Level Yineng Zhe stage, and he had only recently advanced to that level.
Nan Zhen muttered, “He really just got lucky…”
Although Nan Yu was currently also a Middle-Level Jingshenli Zhe, the middle stage of a mental power user could not be compared to the middle stage of an ability user.
While the total number of mental power users was large, ninety-nine percent were Low-Level. Out of every hundred mental power users, there might only be one Middle-Level one.
As for High-Level Jingshenli Zhe, there were only fifty in the entire Empire right now.
Moreover, every single one of them was somewhat elderly because it was far too rare for a young mental power user to break through to the high level. It was rare in the past, and now there hadn’t been a new one for nearly thirty or forty years.
The Empire was currently quite anxious about this.
In contrast, the situation for Yineng Zhe was much better regarding the distribution of ranks.
However, Low-Level Yineng Zhe still made up the vast majority, roughly seventy percent. About twenty percent were Middle-Level, and the final ten percent were High-Level.
On the Empire’s Capital Star, one could see dozens of High-Level Yineng Zhe almost as soon as they stepped out the door. Anyone living on the Capital Star was bound to have at least one High-Level Yineng Zhe in their family.
Even Nan Yun and Nan Zhen were both High-Level Yineng Zhe.
The rank and strength of an Yineng Zhe were inextricably linked to Yineng beasts. While they could grow stronger through their own cultivation, the speed was far too slow.
The average human lifespan nowadays was about three hundred to five hundred years.
Those who were neither mental power users nor ability users lived about three hundred years, while Yineng Zhe and Jingshenli Zhe could live longer. Five hundred years was the average age, but some with good constitutions could even live to seven or eight hundred.
If an Yineng Zhe relied solely on their own cultivation, a Low-Level one might only break through to the Middle-Level by the time they died. That was indeed too slow.
However, the meat of Yineng beasts could stimulate Yineng Zhe to become stronger quickly, enhancing their abilities and turning them into powerhouses.
But good things often come with a catch. While the meat was extremely useful—with higher-level beast meat being even more effective—there was a major problem: it contained impurities that were 100% impossible to remove. These impurities were invisible.
After an Yineng Zhe consumed the meat, these impurities would invade their psyche. It was well known that while Yineng Zhe were skilled at using their abilities for combat, they were not good at training or using their spirit.
If the spirit became polluted, as the level of pollution deepened, the Yineng Zhe’s temper would become increasingly violent. Eventually, they might go completely insane or even spontaneously self-destruct.
Therefore, to the Yineng Zhe who constantly craved power and ate beast meat, the Jingshenli Zhe who could redeem their polluted spirits were naturally equivalent to saviors.
Generally speaking, a newly advanced Low-Level Jingshenli Zhe could dissipate the pollution in the mental sea of a Low-Level Yineng Zhe. A veteran Low-Level Jingshenli Zhe with consolidated power could do the same for a Middle-Level Yineng Zhe.
A Middle-Level Jingshenli Zhe could dissipate pollution for Middle-Level users and a small number of High-Level Yineng Zhe whose pollution wasn’t too severe.
As for High-Level Jingshenli Zhe, basically no amount of mental pollution could stump them—unless the Yineng Zhe had already gone completely insane and their mental sea had collapsed beyond repair. In such a case, all hope would be lost.
