Chapter 22: Who Tampered with It?
Yu Lanfeng could see that although Nan Yu was sleeping soundly and comfortably, the exhaustion on his face was still evident; he was clearly worn out.
But to have cleared the mental pollution of forty-six warriors whose levels had reached A-rank or higher in a single day…
To allow them to move freely, he must have lowered their pollution to below D-rank at least.
Once mental pollution reached S-rank, a person would go completely berserk, attacking indiscriminately and refusing to let go of their target until one of them was dead.
And everyone here had been an Yineng Zhe with A-rank mental pollution.
Yu Lanfeng suddenly felt that something was very wrong.
He turned to look at Yuan Qiyang behind him. “What happened? All forty-six soldiers here had A-rank mental pollution. Didn’t I say he was new and needed to adapt? Why assign so much at once?”
Yuan Qiyang blinked, seemingly realizing the problem as well.
To avoid waking the sleeping Nan Yu, he led everyone out into the corridor to speak.
“Eh…?” Yuan Qiyang stood blankly before Yu Lanfeng.
He didn’t know who had tampered with things, but he knew it was his own failure. No matter who was responsible, Yu Lanfeng had instructed him to look after Nan Yu and only return to his unit once everything was confirmed to be fine.
But he… he had seemingly placed too much trust in Captain An Mi.
Could Captain An Mi be dissatisfied with the Jingshenli Zhe personally brought back by the Marshal and done this on purpose?
But An Mi… he truly couldn’t imagine An Mi doing such a thing, because An Mi simply wasn’t that kind of person.
Especially since everyone in the mental power unit was exhausted; the arrival of Nan Yu should have made him very happy, as it meant someone could help share the workload.
Yuan Qiyang stood there in silence. He didn’t know what to say or how to say it, because he couldn’t imagine who could have done it. Perhaps…
Was it just a simple mistake?
However, at that moment, Yu Lanfeng saw An Mi’s silhouette—he hadn’t sent anyone to disturb him because he was busy.
When An Mi saw them, he cried out, “Marshal?!”
He looked panic-stricken. “Why is everyone here? I knew it… something must have happened…”
Yuan Qiyang frowned slightly. “Captain An Mi, what’s wrong?”
An Mi stood there, gasping for breath. “I made a mistake! I made a mistake! It wasn’t here, it was next door… it wasn’t this ward…”
But when he looked up and saw the situation inside the room, he looked as if he had been strangled. It was a long while before he found his voice. “T-this… what happened here…”
Yu Lanfeng looked at him with a meaningful gaze. “It’s exactly what you see. Nan Yu completed his task. All the patients here have recovered to the point where they can move freely”.
“However, I have a question for you. I originally thought you were busy and shouldn’t be disturbed, but seeing as you have time to come here, you must not be that busy over there”.
An Mi didn’t know what to say. Could he say that he had suddenly remembered what happened here and rushed over as fast as he could?
But…
“Marshal…”
“I’m asking you now: what exactly happened? Why were forty-six soldiers with A-rank mental pollution arranged together?”
“Aren’t they supposed to be distributed among the various Jingshenli Zhe to ensure they can be kept in a stable state?”
“Did you know in advance that a Jingshenli Zhe capable of handling all their pollution was arriving, and so you arranged them together beforehand?”
An Mi opened his mouth to speak, but Yu Lanfeng didn’t give him the chance.
“In the military, there is nowhere I cannot see. I’m giving you a chance to explain now, but afterward, I will have a detailed investigation conducted. If the stories don’t match, you can wait for your punishment”.
Yu Lanfeng truly rarely spoke so much. He was clearly furious this time. Even Yuan Qiyang shrunk back to the side, fearing he would be caught and severely lectured.
They all knew that Yu Lanfeng rarely got angry. He usually kept his words brief, expressing his meaning clearly and nothing more. He had many things to handle every day; if he explained everything in detail, he truly might not have enough time.
So… speaking so much just now was likely something even he hadn’t expected.
Yuan Qiyang looked through the crack in the door at Nan Yu, who was still resting in a bed. “Eh? Wait, why is Nan Yu resting in here…”
As soon as he said this, everyone’s gaze focused on An Mi again. No one expected that An Mi had even forgotten this; was he so certain that Nan Yu would stay in the ward and not go to rest?
Cold sweat was now pouring down An Mi’s forehead. “Marshal, it’s my fault! It was my failure to properly arrange Nan Yu’s work this time! It was my mistake!”
An Mi’s frank admission of his mistake caused Yu Lanfeng’s expression to soften slightly. “Fine. Return to your duties for now. Write a detailed report for me later”.
By “later,” he meant after the busy period was over. While things were still busy, there was no need to waste time writing, as the soldiers’ mental pollution still needed to be cleared.
And it was just a detailed report; for now, it didn’t seem like much of a punishment, so everyone felt it was reasonable. After all, shouldn’t one be punished for a mistake?
Who among them would dare say they hadn’t made a mistake and been punished since joining the military?
An Mi grit his teeth and nodded. “Understood, Marshal. I will come to see you later”.
“Do not go in and disturb his rest,” Yu Lanfeng added.
While this was An Mi’s mistake, it was undeniable that Nan Yu was indeed extraordinary. As a Middle-Level Jingshenli Zhe, his mental power was formidable.
To actually be able to handle forty-six A-rank mental pollution warriors within twenty-four hours…
It seemed he had truly picked up a treasure this time?
Yu Lanfeng led everyone away; he had many other things to attend to and couldn’t stay here forever. However, as he reached the elevator, he suddenly spoke.
“Yuan Qiyang, send people to protect him in secret. He must not be allowed to come to any harm”.
Yu Lanfeng said he “must not be allowed to come to any harm,” rather than saying “he must not be allowed to come to any harm here.”
The difference between those two phrases was immense. The latter would have meant ensuring his absolute safety while he was at the base, which would only require a few soldiers to protect him. But the former was telling.
The former meant he must not be allowed to come to any harm, regardless of where he was. In other words, even after Nan Yu’s mission here was over, they would still have to continue sending people to protect him.
Therefore, the people sent to protect Nan Yu couldn’t be overt.
Yuan Qiyang understood the meaning behind Yu Lanfeng’s words. He nodded solemnly. “I understand”.
In truth, he also felt that Nan Yu was worth it.
