Part 3
“Calm the hell down! They have guns—how are you going to kill her? Your brother survived so much hardship; do you think he’d just let himself be caught so easily? Even if you could kill them all, you’d spend the rest of your life in prison. Don’t you want to find your brother? Don’t you want to hear from his own mouth what happened to him?”
A slightly choked voice came from below. Lu Xunye realized his tone had been too sharp. His grip loosened instantly, and he sheepishly shut his mouth.
“You… you’re crying?”
The youth before him kept his head down, his expression unreadable. Lu Xunye called out tentatively, “Shen Yunqian?”
“Are you alright?” Lu Xunye cupped the other’s face. The youth’s expression held a rare look of helplessness.
“Why won’t my brother recognize me? Does he… not want me anymore?”
Hearing the trembling voice, Lu Xunye looked down into Shen Yunqian’s bloodshot eyes that were devoid of tears.
The stubbornness peeking through the brokenness made him feel like someone trapped inside a bell being struck with full force. This sense of familiarity left his brain completely stunned for two seconds.
The others, ignored by the pair, seemed unable to stand their “final moments of tenderness” that bordered on flirting.
“Should we take them out now…?”
The second bodyguard made a throat-slitting motion and asked Fu Lan for her opinion in a low voice. He had heard of the law that villains die because they talk too much.
“They should be killed. Go and…” Fu Lan pointed toward Lu Xunye, her eyes narrowing. “Hang him up, then.”
“Yes.”
Just as the man moved, someone was shoved in through the door.
“Behave yourself! Get in there!”
With a thud and a muffled groan, a figure tumbled into the middle of the group like a falling telephone pole.
A familiar man walked out from behind him.
It was the third bodyguard who had taken the injured man away earlier.
The man first nodded to Fu Lan. “Old Zou’s matter has been handled. I saw this person dumped by the elevator when I came in, so I brought him along. Also, the two people in the stairwell seem to have been rescued.”
Lying on the ground was a slender man, bound tightly and blindfolded.
The person who tied him seemed to have a grudge. The black cloth strip was wrapped messily yet tightly around the man’s face, leaving only the area below his nose exposed.
If one ignored the paper that had been folded thick and stuffed into the man’s mouth like a wine cork, one could tell he was quite handsome despite only half his face being visible.
This handsome man was currently “wriggling” on the floor. His exposed skin was covered in bloody scratches from the friction against the ground. The dissatisfied sounds emerging from his throat sounded like very foul curses.
Shen Yunqian found this person a bit strange.
Even Lu Xunye felt an eerily familiar sensation, but he couldn’t put his finger on why.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw that Shen Yunqian’s attention had shifted. He breathed a sigh of relief and slowly let go of the other’s hands.
“Did you tie him up?” Fu Lan found the figure exceptionally familiar. She walked over, squatted down, and reached out to tear away the black cloth covering the man’s eyes.
“No. Someone likely left him there on purpose.” The third bodyguard paused. “Our location has been compromised.”
“I’ll do it.” He beat Fu Lan to it and pulled the object from the man’s mouth.
Instantly, a series of undignified, angry curses filled their ears. The first bodyguard beside Fu Lan kicked the man in the back. “Shut up.”
“This is…” The third bodyguard held the unfolded piece of paper. It was a document folded into several layers. He glanced at it, didn’t understand, and handed it to Fu Lan.
To everyone’s surprise, after seeing it, Fu Lan’s face turned as hideously as if she had swallowed a piece of red-hot iron. She tore the paper to shreds in a fit of rage. “You little brat! I truly underestimated you.”
During this, the man in pajamas broke free from his bonds. He barked in a voice so raspy it was on the verge of breaking: “If you have the guts to play ghost, don’t let me catch you, or I’ll f*cking kill you… Mom?”
He ripped the black cloth from his face. The stimulus of regaining light made his vision go dark for a moment.
When he refocused, the upward angle revealed a face he never thought he’d see again in this lifetime. But upon closer inspection, it looked slightly different.
The man’s anger, which had been stuck in his chest, dissipated as he stared at the woman. His shock instantly turned into wariness. “Who are you?!”
Before Fu Lan could stop him, the stunned third bodyguard blurted out toward the man, “Young Master?”
Lu Xunye recognized him the moment the black cloth was removed. “Si Jinyan?”
Hearing his name, Si Jinyan turned his head. Seeing the two by the window, he immediately clenched his fists. He ignored the pain and ripped away the loose rope around him, stood up, and stumbled toward the open side of the floor.
Seeing him approaching with ill intent, Lu Xunye’s jawline tightened. He propped his hand against Si Jinyan’s shoulder to stop him from advancing further, warning him word by word: “Don’t. Do. Anything. Reckless.”
Si Jinyan grabbed his elbow but didn’t throw it off. His gaze shifted to the person beside him.
“Is this fun? I’ve been going crazy looking for you! And you and Lu Xunye found someone to dress up like my mother and kidnap me just to mock me? Shen Yunqian! My mother is dead! She’s dead!!! Why can’t you just let her go!”
Lu Xunye spoke before Shen Yunqian could. “Did your mother ever go by the name ‘Song Lan’?”
Only then did Si Jinyan look at him, remaining silent for two seconds.
Just as Lu Xunye thought he had been moved, he was suddenly shoved aside.
“You have no right to call her name. Shut your filthy mouth.”
As the sound faded, Lu Xunye couldn’t hear clearly. He lost his footing and fell backward unexpectedly. A sudden sense of weightlessness surged.
He didn’t forget there were several stories below him. His hands flailed in the air, grabbing at nothing.
Amidst Si Jinyan’s growing shock, Lu Xunye grabbed onto a rough concrete pillar. Just as his racing heart began to settle, a push from behind straightened him back up.
Lu Xunye’s heart skipped a beat, then pounded wildly. His previous position had been taken. He turned his head back, and a cold voice rang in his ear.
“Don’t look.”
Accompanying the voice was a faint, crisp snapping sound.
Then, a person stepped out from behind him. It was Shen Yunqian.
“Weren’t you curious why my parents killed your mother?” Shen Yunqian slowly lifted his eyelids, his gaze calm and steady as he stared at Si Jinyan. “I’ll tell you today.”
Si Jinyan felt something was wrong, but his emotions were still stirred. “How are you going to lie to me this time?”
Only Lu Xunye’s eyes widened when he saw the grey utility knife Shen Yunqian was holding behind his back. He looked down and back—it was indeed gone.
The knife had probably been left by a construction worker; Lu Xunye had spotted it in the shadow of that half-bag of cement.
However, how did Shen Yunqian find it under his foot?
Was it Lu Xunye’s imagination, or was the blade of the knife a bit shorter?
This posture… he wanted to kill Si Jinyan?!
The word “don’t” had just rolled around Lu Xunye’s throat when Shen Yunqian pressed the blade against Si Jinyan’s neck.
Having sensed something earlier, the second bodyguard’s attempt to pull Si Jinyan away failed. His chambered gun was immediately aimed at Shen Yunqian.
Lu Xunye sensed something beyond his understanding. He took a step forward to chase them, only to see the first bodyguard beside Fu Lan pull out a gun and aim it at him.
Facing Shen Yunqian, Si Jinyan was in disbelief, his eyes wide. “You want to kill me?”
“Forgive me. The situation demands it.”
Shen Yunqian gave a low explanation and closed his eyes. Ignoring Si Jinyan, he looked at Fu Lan and raised his voice: “Is my bargaining chip enough now?”
“Let us go.”
Feeling the sharp sting against his neck, Si Jinyan finally realized that Shen Yunqian was truly capable of harming him.
Terrified that a single slip would result in his throat being slit, he turned around under partial duress. Seeing the woman who looked exactly like his mother, he gritted his teeth and said to Shen Yunqian, “What kind of act are you playing now!”
The second bodyguard didn’t dare act recklessly and could only hover indecisively. He barked, “Do you want to die?! Put the knife down! Now!”
