Chapter 2: Probably Brothers – Understood, it’s the protagonist gong Ye Zhichen and shou Yun Shaocheng!
Yu Xia lay on the hospital bed for a while longer. However, since he had just woken up and still felt a dull ache throughout his body, his sleep wasn’t very restful. He simply got out of bed, slipped on his slippers, and walked a few steps around the ward.
It had to be said that in Yu Xia’s current condition, lying down and standing up to walk were two completely different states. When standing, even without walking, it was much more uncomfortable than lying in bed.
Yu Xia even felt as though he had become the legendary Little Mermaid; with every step, it felt like needles were being driven into the soles of his feet. He almost stumbled and fell by the bedside, but luckily he was quick enough to grab the edge of the bed, avoiding an embarrassing tumble.
At that moment, a “beep” sounded from the ward door. The door opened, and a person in a white lab coat walked in, followed by several busy little robots.
The man in the lab coat pushed up his black-rimmed glasses and nodded at Yu Xia with some satisfaction: “You’re completely awake. Not bad. Where’s Old Xie? Back to the orphanage?”
The “Old Xie” the doctor referred to was the orphanage director, whose full name was Xie Qing.
Yu Xia nodded and said, “The Director left. He said he was going to see two other troublemakers.”
Hearing this, the doctor frowned: “I didn’t see him over there, so we must have missed each other. But it doesn’t matter; telling you is the same, since it concerns you anyway.”
Hearing that it was about his own affairs, Yu Xia immediately perked up and sat upright on the edge of the bed: “Is something the matter?”
“After you woke up, your Director should have mentioned that your mental power rose again after this backlash. One of our testing devices even exploded. However, your physical constitution hasn’t been tested yet, so we need to find an opportunity to test it again.” As the doctor spoke, he opened a chart on his optical computer and turned the screen toward Yu Xia. “This is your mental power activity level. You can take a look.”
Yu Xia looked at it very seriously, but he still didn’t understand: “I can’t read this.”
The doctor seemed a bit choked by the response but explained anyway: “Simply put, your mental power is currently extremely active. Your entire brain is in an unstable period. You need to stabilize it as soon as possible. Try to stay calm and composed these next few days. In the future as well, until your constitution and mental power reach a matching level, it’s best not to have large emotional swings—unless you want your mental power to backlash again.”
Yu Xia looked at the light screen and pursed his lips: “So you’re saying I’m not allowed to get angry at all?”
“Not just anger. It’s best not to be too happy either; keep a calm mind.” The doctor said while putting away his optical computer. “As for other things, Old Xie will arrange them for you. Don’t worry about it; Old Xie is very wealthy, there’s no need to worry about him.”
Yu Xia tilted his head and asked, “The Director… why is he the director of an orphanage? He seems really powerful…”
In the original book, Director Xie Qing was a figure who appeared throughout the story. Despite being just an orphanage director, he left the protagonist gong and shou with no options. In the end, he even caused the protagonist gong to lose the military rank he was about to receive, yet Xie Qing never received any “deserved” punishment. He was essentially the biggest antagonist in the book.
However, this “biggest antagonist” had truly remained the director of an orphanage the entire time, with no other hidden identities revealed until the end.
The doctor seemed very familiar with Director Xie and replied casually: “Old Xie? It’s not some big secret. He retired from the battlefield over ten years ago due to an injury and has been your director ever since. But he’s not like a normal orphanage director. Taking care of you brats is the job of the orphanage nannies; his role is more about discovering the potential in people like you.”
“Experts are found among the common folk. Look, isn’t there one right here in you? If you had been willing to start exercising earlier, he would have reported you to the higher-ups long ago. After all, constitution can be trained, but people with high mental power are very scarce in the entire Empire.”
Yu Xia was dumbfounded. Director Xie was a hidden master? He actually had such a background?
The doctor had Yu Xia lie back down and performed a set of basic physical checks: “Your constitution is still no good. We’ll do a detailed test tomorrow. But from now on, you can’t be like you used to be. If you don’t exercise this time, your life will be in danger.”
Lying in bed, Yu Xia nodded obediently.
The doctor was satisfied and pulled a small robot from behind him: “When you have nothing to do, go out for a run. Our hospital has a specialized fitness center. I’ll leave a robot for you. If you’re bored, you can chat and play with it.”
Yu Xia: “…”
The robot pulled out by the doctor looked like a very ordinary robot, no different from the ones he had seen in news reports back in modern times before he transmigrated. It was made entirely of metal and didn’t look human at all, but after looking at it for a while, the round metal head seemed quite cute.
Yu Xia scrambled up from the bed and reached out to tap the robot’s round head: “Alright!”
As a doctor, he naturally had many things to attend to. After giving Yu Xia his instructions, the doctor prepared to leave with the other robots. He had one foot out the door when he seemed to remember something and turned back: “If those two troublemakers come by, no matter what they say, act as if you didn’t hear them. Let Xiao Jin kick them out.”
Yu Xia blinked: “Troublemakers?”
The doctor explained: “The two who were gossiping in front of you and made your mental power unstable, causing all three of you to suffer backlashes. Those two woke up earlier than you. That Alpha from Imperial Star Academy even vowed to sue you. But don’t worry too much; just rest well. Xiao Jin will handle anything that comes up. Old Xie personally set Xiao Jin’s programming.”
With that, the doctor waved his hand and left Yu Xia’s ward, leaving Yu Xia to stare at the small robot named “Xiao Jin.”
Yu Xia reached out and patted the small robot’s head: “So impressive!”
Xiao Jin puffed out its metallic chest and spoke in a deep, adult male voice with a very proud tone, which felt a bit contradictory: “Of course.”
Yu Xia tried to get used to it but couldn’t. He asked the robot, “Xiao Jin, do you only have this voice? Can we change it?”
Xiao Jin tilted its round metal head: “You don’t like it? Director Xie said you would like such a mature and reliable voice. If you insist on changing it, we have other voices: ‘Big Sister’ voice, ‘Loli’ voice—whatever you want, it’s in my programming.”
In the end, Yu Xia chose a teenage boy’s voice. it sounded quite similar to his own, and the sense of contradiction finally vanished.
Having picked a voice, Yu Xia suddenly felt bored: “Xiao Jin, is there anything I can do to pass the time?”
In addition to the programming Xie Qing specifically set to handle any trouble Yu Xia might encounter, Xiao Jin was naturally capable of basic tasks. Hearing Yu Xia’s question, it easily brought up many entertainment programs for Yu Xia to choose from. Among them was “Fight the Landlord,” the game Yu Xia was most familiar with from his previous life.
Yu Xia sighed; “Fight the Landlord” truly was timeless. Just as he was about to relive the classic with Xiao Jin, the door was knocked.
Yu Xia stopped: “Who is it? Did the Director come back? That shouldn’t be right; he just left.”
Xiao Jin slid on the rollers under its base and volunteered: “I heard you have difficulty moving. I’ll go check!”
Yu Xia: “…”
Although it was the truth, the phrase “difficulty moving” from Xiao Jin’s mouth gave him the illusion that he was a cripple.
Sitting on the bed, Yu Xia swung his feet and asked, “Who is it?”
Xiao Jin scanned the screen by the door: “It’s two young men. One calls the other ‘Brother Chen.’ They’re probably brothers.”
Yu Xia: “…”
Understood. It must be the protagonist gong Ye Zhichen and the protagonist shou Yun Shaocheng!
