Chapter 27: Military Training Representative – “Then I am still slightly more outstanding.”
The military training for the first-year freshmen finally officially began.
Shao Yan was quite nervous when he handed over the newly printed list, but Instructor Yi, who was in charge of their class, didn’t say anything about it. He only asked for Shao Yan’s name before letting him leave, seemingly not paying much attention to the list he had provided.
It wasn’t until he had walked several hundred meters away that Shao Yan finally breathed a sigh of relief. Then, in a very good mood, he began to smile and even gave himself a silent “Yes!” gesture. “Done”.
In that newly printed list, he had deliberately changed the characters following Yu Xia’s name, which should have been “Approved for Leave,” to “Confirmed Participation,” just like everyone else’s. While handing over the list, he had even carefully peeked at the instructor’s expression several times.
The man showed no expression at all; he likely didn’t know the situation.
In that case, it would be too easy to slip this through. Even if he were questioned later, he could simply blame it on a printing error. After all, he had specifically confirmed the list with Professor Zhong before handing it over, so how could he have modified the words on it?
It could only have been a printing error.
He had a beautiful vision, but reality did not unfold as he had imagined.
On the day military training officially started, the instructor rolled the single page of the list into a megaphone shape. “Before military training officially begins, we need to select a representative. This person will primarily be responsible for commuting during the training period and for notifying students of various announcements. Therefore, we need to pick a responsible representative who doesn’t show favoritism. Is there anyone who wants to volunteer or anyone you wish to nominate?”
Hearing the instructor’s words, a bad premonition suddenly rose in Shao Yan’s heart. Intuition told him that it was best not to step forward or try to stand out at this moment.
Just as he was planning to shrink back, the other students in the class began to stir.
Likely finding it a hassle—they had just held an election for class monitor and now had to do another round—their initial excitement had already faded. Someone squatting on the ground called out, “Just let the class monitor handle it, or the PE rep!”
The instructor scanned all the students present and didn’t dispute their views. He asked, “Which one is the PE rep?”
Although the students were somewhat curious why he didn’t pick the class monitor—as generally the monitor should be more outstanding—perhaps the instructor simply preferred the PE rep. Not thinking much of it, they directly pushed the newly elected PE rep forward. Someone who was familiar with him even patted his shoulder and said, “Brother, it’s all on you. You know what to do!”
The newly elected PE rep was named Gao Zhou. As he walked toward the instructor, he retorted, “I am a responsible and upright youth who doesn’t show favoritism. I don’t know anything, so don’t talk nonsense!”
The instructor directly handed him the list that had been rolled into a megaphone. “Very well. Get to know everyone first. Start the roll call!”
In the crowd, Shao Yan’s palms began to sweat, and his tension grew as he watched the list.
Gao Zhou took the list from the instructor, gave a mock cough, and was about to start the roll call when he immediately saw the unique name at the very end. Several lines had been drawn through this name with a pen. The intent was very clear: this person was not included in their military training list.
However, Gao Zhou also had a deep impression of this crossed-out name. He was the only student in the entire class whose scores were better than the class monitor’s, but due to his surname, his name always appeared at the very bottom of the list.
The stark contrast between being first and being last had made Gao Zhou officially remember the name Yu Xia.
Unable to contain his curiosity, Gao Zhou asked, “Instructor, why is Yu Xia’s name crossed out? Is he not participating in military training with us?”
The instructor lifted his eyelids and glanced at Gao Zhou. “Correct. Due to physical reasons, ordinary military training is not suitable for him. So, he is training separately according to an individual training schedule”.
Upon hearing this, Gao Zhou didn’t find anything wrong with it, but felt exceptionally regretful. “Heh, I wanted to take the chance during military training to see this god-like person who ranked first. How could he not be participating!”
The instructor smiled and said to him, “I’ll give you a chance to meet the god-like person who ranked first in your major. Every day from now on, make a trip to Yu Xia’s place and get a copy of his training data for the day from his supervisor, then give it to me the following morning. Oh, by the way, Yu Xia’s training supervisor is the fourth-year Command Department Chairman, Qin Yizheng. You should know him, right?”
The moment he heard that name, Gao Zhou immediately perked up. “I know, I know! During last year’s inter-academy competition, Imperial Star Academy crushed Duxin Academy under Senior Qin’s leadership. Don’t worry, instructor, mission completion guaranteed”.
As if to prove something, he gave the list in his hand a formal shake. “Alright students, I’m starting the roll call. As a responsible and upright youth who doesn’t show favoritism, I will not be lenient. First one, An Keyang!”
“Present!”
“Second one…”
The first day of military training was just for adaptation. Instructor Yi didn’t arrange any activities that were too grueling for them. After finishing the roll call, he had them first run a few laps around the track.
Among them, the one with the best physical fitness in Mechanical Class One was the PE rep, Gao Zhou. With a constitution reaching S+, Gao Zhou completed the entire distance in almost half the time of the other students.
Watching Gao Zhou run over from a distance, Instructor Yi also felt it was absurd.
The Mechanical Department had high requirements for mental power but average requirements for constitution. Most students had C or B-rank constitutions; having an A-rank was already considered good. He never expected an S+ constitution to be hidden here. With such high constitution and mental power, wouldn’t it be better to pilot a mecha? Why come to the Mechanical Department?
The Mechanical Department was so mentally taxing, while piloting mechas was so cool!
Then again, perhaps that was simply the student’s ambition, and he couldn’t use his own standards to judge others. But right now, it was problematic.
Instructor Yi looked at Gao Zhou, whose breathing frequency hadn’t even changed, and tried to negotiate with him. “How about you go run a few more laps? Otherwise, this is too discouraging for the others!”
Gao Zhou had a mournful look on his face. “It’s not like that, instructor. You can’t give me special treatment just because my constitution is higher than the others. We are one class and need to be treated equally!”
Instructor Yi had only mentioned it casually anyway. “That’s a fair point. Let’s leave it at that for now. It’s perfect, though; I can train the others to within an inch of their lives next. Since you’re here to hold the bottom line, it won’t result in everyone being paralyzed on the field after training. If any emergencies arise, you can help out. A military doctor will be coming over later; remember to introduce yourself”.
Right at that moment, Gao Zhou noticed two people suddenly standing outside the wire fence of the Mechanical Class One training ground. One of them happened to be the fourth-year Command Department Chairman he had heard of before, Qin Yizheng.
It was clear he was truly happy to see Qin Yizheng, as he almost jumped up. “In… In… Instructor, that’s Chairman Qin Yizheng, right? Am I right? Am I right?”
Noticing Gao Zhou’s reaction, Instructor Yi also turned around and saw the two people outside the wire fence. He walked over to Qin Yizheng. “Xiao Qin, why are you here at this time? Aren’t you supposed to be supervising Yu Xia’s exercise? This person, if I’m not mistaken, should be Yu Xia?”
Yu Xia’s state didn’t look very good. Half of his weight was leaning on Qin Yizheng. However, when Instructor Yi asked, he still gave him a nod. “Yes, I am Yu Xia”.
Instructor Yi raised an eyebrow. “What’s going on? You don’t look so good”.
Qin Yizheng put an arm around Yu Xia’s shoulder, letting the boy lean against him. “Because he needs to break through his D-rank constitution as quickly as possible, Yu Xia has to push his limits as much as he can during this period. He’s just finished an hour of running and is exhausted right now. He kept wanting to find a place to lean, but that’s bad for his body. So, I simply accompanied him over here to see his future classmates”.
Instructor Yi looked at Qin Yizheng’s hand resting on Yu Xia’s shoulder and became thoughtful. “I see. I see”.
Gao Zhou stood aside and listened to the gist of it. “Oh, so this is Senior Qin and the class academic god he’s supervising! Hello, hello. I’m the PE rep for our class. From now on, I’ll be the one transferring Student Yu Xia’s physical fitness reports between Senior Qin and the instructor!”
Yu Xia gave Gao Zhou a smile. He asked curiously, “Don’t you need to train?”
Gao Zhou very proudly made a “V” sign with his fingers. “I’ve finished my run! I ran faster than everyone else!”
Yu Xia immediately showed a look of envy. “That’s so good. I want to have such an outstanding constitution too!”
Qin Yizheng wasn’t quite convinced. “Then I am still slightly more outstanding”.
Yu Xia was aware of Qin Yizheng’s public constitution rank. He let out a sigh. “I wouldn’t even dare dream of a constitution as high as Senior Qin’s. Right now, it’s hard enough for me to break through to C-rank!”
Qin Yizheng couldn’t help himself; he moved his hand from Yu Xia’s shoulder to his head and gave it a couple of rubs. “You still need to have some dreams; what if they come true? Although there is no precedent yet, theoretically, anything is possible during the body’s growth period. You should have full confidence in yourself. Besides, Professor Wen also said your physical checkup reports show your physical quality potential is very high!”
Gao Zhou scratched the back of his head. “Why do I feel the atmosphere between them is so strange?”
Instructor Yi patted his shoulder. “Young man, don’t overthink it. Alright, the students in our class should be arriving soon. Get ready to welcome them!”
Although he was still reluctant to leave his rest time, Gao Zhou obediently walked toward the center of the training ground. Besides him, the first to arrive was the class monitor, Shao Yan.
Shao Yan, who had run to his class’s area and was planning to rest for a bit, noticed the instructor had been talking to someone earlier. He asked Gao Zhou, “Who are those two people?”
“They are Qin Yizheng and Yu Xia,” Gao Zhou introduced them to Shao Yan with great enthusiasm. “Do you know? Imperial Star Academy’s victory in last year’s inter-academy competition was largely thanks to Senior Qin. He’s truly impressive…”
Shao Yan didn’t listen to the rest of Gao Zhou’s chatter, but he did hear that one of the two people was…
Yu Xia.
