Chapter 62: Wanting Compassion
Good Baby. Mu Feng remembered Liang Yuhang calling Mumu that before.
Even though he knew it was an act, he was incredibly envious of that cat.
How detestable. His jealousy of Mumu had reached a level that offended gods and men alike.
“How sweet.” Wen Yuan’s eyes curved into crescents from her smile. “I thought Yuhang wouldn’t know how to date. I didn’t expect their relationship to be so good.”
Mu Feng felt the patch of skin on the back of his neck go numb. Liang Yuhang’s hand was still resting there, stroking him like one would a cat.
“Fake,” Liang Jingyi sneered. “I’ll see how long you two can keep up the act.”
Wen Yuan frowned. “Why can’t you wish the best for your brother and sister-in-law?”
“Because there’s no affection between them at all.” Liang Jingyi’s gaze was fixed on the other. “It’s probably just a play to inherit the family business. Only you would believe it.”
“Alright, enough,” Liang Zhaoqing said. “If becoming the heir was as simple as getting engaged, it would be far too easy.”
Mu Feng grew angry listening to this.
Liang Yuhang excelled in everything and was upright in character. He had become a Colonel at such a young age, and not to mention, he had given up a heart to save a life. If he wasn’t worthy, who was?
“Father seems to be a bit biased,” Mu Feng said in a gentle voice. “Professor Liang hasn’t said a word, so why have you started with the sarcasm?”
Liang Zhaoqing was choked up. “Mu Mingde said you were quite obedient at home. Why have you changed so much since coming to our house?”
“I’m still very obedient to Professor Liang. But even the gentlest person can’t help but speak up when they see unfair treatment,” Mu Feng said. “I’m young and spoke out of turn. Please don’t take it to heart.”
Liang Yuhang’s fingers slid very lightly across the back of his neck.
The little one has grown up. He knows how to speak up for others now. It doesn’t feel bad.
Mu Feng turned back and blinked, mouthing the words: Am I impressive?
Liang Yuhang’s lips curved very slightly.
“After the engagement, you must be mindful of your words and deeds,” Liang Zhaoqing said, trying to reclaim some of his dignity. “I heard you applied for the time-travel experiment. Don’t waste your thoughts on things with zero return. Focus more on pharmaceutical research. You have one foot in the Liang family now; don’t you think about helping out?”
Mu Feng suppressed the urge to snap back. “I listen to Professor Liang. Whatever he tells me to do, I do.”
Liang Zhaoqing: “……”
One after the other. They’re going to make me too angry to eat.
Liang Jingyi added sarcastically from the side, “I told you, inviting them back for dinner would only end in anger. Let’s disperse. What’s the point of eating?”
“I’ve also lost my appetite.” Liang Yuhang stood up decisively. “There’s work to do at the Base. We’re leaving.”
“Why is it like this every time we eat?” Wen Yuan really couldn’t stand how every meal turned into a battle. “It was so hard to bring my daughter-in-law back for once.”
Liang Zhaoqing was also out of the mood. “Don’t come back if there’s nothing important. It’s irritating just looking at you.”
“Then we’ll take our leave,” Mu Feng said, standing up. “Thank you for the gift, Mom. Goodbye.”
He followed behind Liang Yuhang, walking out quickly. He looked like he wanted to say something but hesitated.
“What do you want to say?” Liang Yuhang acted as if he could read minds.
“I feel like… your mother gives me a feeling very similar to my eldest sister. Both very gentle,” Mu Feng said. “I miss her a bit.”
Liang Yuhang turned to look at him. “Want to go for a walk?”
“Will I be wasting your time?” Mu Feng was always very cautious at times when he shouldn’t have boundaries. “You always seem so busy.”
“Not for a few minutes.” Liang Yuhang slowed his pace to walk side-by-side with him. “Was your eldest sister very good to you?”
Mu Feng nodded, his voice very soft. “My mother was the second wife; she married into the Mu family only after getting pregnant. Eldest Sister, Mu Shan, and Mu Shui share the same mother. So, from the moment I was born, I was ostracized by them. Only Eldest Sister wasn’t like that. She would buy me candy and toys.”
He rarely spoke of his past. “She was much older than me and had been outstanding since she was a child. Everyone loved her—so much so that Mu Mingde decided to let a girl be the heir. Unfortunately, she passed away. She died in my arms.”
“The cause of death was…” Liang Yuhang carefully chose his words.
“Sudden death. A heart problem.” Mu Feng lowered his head. “It happened during the first time my spiritual power went out of control. They thought it was me. They even threatened me, saying that if I hadn’t been so young, killing someone would mean prison.”
Liang Yuhang turned around, looking down at him. His eyes were already red.
“Do you think it was you?” he asked.
Mu Feng’s voice was a bit choked. “Before she died, Eldest Sister kept saying it had nothing to do with me. I don’t know if she was just trying to comfort me.”
“Then it wasn’t you.” Liang Yuhang felt the burden he carried was too heavy for a nineteen-year-old.
He felt it necessary to ease the boy’s mind. “She said that because she didn’t want you to feel guilty. Would you disbelieve such important last words?”
“I don’t know.” Mu Feng looked at him with vacant eyes. “As time goes on, I also wonder if it really was my fault.”
“No.” Liang Yuhang affirmed again. “From a medical standpoint, there is no direct evidence that spiritual power can cause cardiac hemorrhage and rupture. Therefore, it wasn’t you.”
Mu Feng’s lips moved. “There was no evidence. Mu Mingde wouldn’t allow an autopsy. She was immediately placed in cryostasis.”
Thus, it became a cold case, and he became the sinner forever nailed to the cross.
“Mu Feng, don’t punish yourself.” Liang Yuhang reached out, forcing him to lift his head. “You are not at fault.”
“Professor Liang, if one day you find out I really was wrong… would you be disappointed?” A trace of moisture gathered at the corners of Mu Feng’s eyes.
He truly wasn’t sure.
As he differentiated into an Alpha and his spiritual power grew stronger, he often wondered in the silence of the night if he had truly done something wrong.
“Even if you lose control, you will subconsciously protect the person you like,” Liang Yuhang said persuasively. “You liked your sister so much; you wouldn’t have hurt her.”
Mu Feng sniffled, but his eyes were still vacant.
“Professor Liang, no one has ever stood on my side.” His expression was a bit aggrieved. “Even my mother just knelt and apologized for me. But I didn’t do anything wrong, so why did I have to apologize?”
Liang Yuhang felt his heart skip another beat.
He had always felt that his emotions had vanished along with that fresh, beating heart. Joys and sorrows had become flat lines. But in this moment, he felt heartache, and he wanted to show compassion.
He wanted the boy to stop being trapped in pain. He wanted him to be happy.
“Mu Feng.” Liang Yuhang called his name. “How can I make you feel a bit better?”
“I don’t know.” Mu Feng forced a very strained smile. “I don’t seem to know how to be happy anymore.”
“What did your eldest sister take you to play with when you were little?” Liang Yuhang asked.
Mu Feng thought for a moment. “The slide. I would slide down, and she would catch me.”
Liang Yuhang truly used up all the patience of his life in this moment. He looked down, searching for a park nearby.
“What’s wrong?” Mu Feng didn’t understand. “Are you busy with work?”
Liang Yuhang locked onto a location. “Taking you somewhere. Let’s go, get in the car.”
Mu Feng was even more confused, but he did as he was told.
Watching the car drive in the opposite direction of the Base, he couldn’t help but ask, “Where are we going?”
Liang Yuhang didn’t speak, keeping him in suspense. He simply lowered the window, letting the night breeze drift in.
The car stopped at the entrance of an old park. Liang Yuhang followed the map, turning left and right until they finally saw a brightly colored slide. It was long, with several curves before it reached the ground.
“Go on, slide.” Liang Yuhang lifted his chin. “Do you want me to carry you up?”
Mu Feng couldn’t believe the man would accompany him in doing such a thing. It was completely at odds with Liang Yuhang’s usual style.
He stood still. “Right now? I’m an adult. Playing with this is embarrassing.”
“No one is watching.” Liang Yuhang turned his back, giving him space. “Just once.”
Mu Feng truly hadn’t played with one in many years. He was over 1.8 meters tall now; crouching on that slope was a bit awkward, yet nostalgic.
After his sister died, he would only walk past similar parks with his head down.
Mu Feng sat down carefully and closed his eyes. It felt like he had instantly returned to his childhood.
“I’m starting to slide, Professor Liang. Don’t look.”
Because he was an adult now, his speed was very fast. He rounded several curves and was about to hit the bottom.
Mu Feng sensed the need to brake. Just as he was about to open his eyes, he crashed into a warm embrace.
Liang Yuhang reached out, catching him firmly and steadily. “Don’t be afraid. I’ve got you.”
