Chapter 7: The First Meeting
Ding-dong—
Yan Mo heard the doorbell and sent Xiao Yuan to answer it. “That should be the ingredients I ordered.”
He had been living in Lan Ze’s home for several days. After realizing the Major General wasn’t coming back, he had settled into a comfortable routine.
After registering his new identity, the Male Protection Association had deposited twenty years’ worth of backdated Male subsidies into his account, with more to follow monthly.
Looking at the string of zeros in his balance, Yan Mo marveled at how privileged Males were. The subsidies alone were enough to ensure he never had to work a day in his life.
Since the nutrient solutions were unbearable, he had started ordering ingredients and cooking for himself. Zerg ingredients were diverse—strange vegetables and fruits, and meat from exotic interstellar beasts.
He had found that the food wasn’t bad at all, so he made a habit of cooking every day.
Just as he was plating a batch of interstellar braised pork, he heard someone enter.
It was Lan Ze.
This was the first time Yan Mo had seen him in person, though he had watched countless videos of him on the Star Net. Lan Ze was undeniably handsome, even by Zerg standards.
Dressed in a crisp uniform, Lan Ze looked distant and aloof. Seeing Yan Mo in an apron, holding a plate of food, a flash of genuine shock crossed his eyes.
For a noble Male to be in a kitchen, wearing an apron and cooking, was unheard of. Cooking for Males was a standard duty for Females; even if they lived on nutrient sludge themselves, they were expected to master the culinary arts to serve their future Masters.
Yan Mo recovered quickly and set the plate on the table. “Major General Lan Ze?”
Lan Ze masked his surprise. “Yes, Lord.”
He had ignored the Male for days and had come prepared for a storm of fury. But instead of being berated or whipped, the Lord simply waved him over.
“Have you eaten yet, Major General? I’ve made a few dishes. Why don’t we eat and talk?”
Lan Ze looked at him with suspicion. This was not what he had expected. He had hoped his absence would provoke the Lord into demanding a new guardian. He could handle a whipping or a fine; what he couldn’t handle was being forced to marry a Male and spend his life begging for mercy under a lash.
He sat down across from Yan Mo, staring at him intensely.
“Is something wrong? Do I have something on my face?” Yan Mo asked, feeling self-conscious.
“No. Forgive my rudeness, Lord,” Lan Ze replied.
He was fascinated. Was there really a Male this kind? He didn’t seem angry about being ignored, and he didn’t even take offense at being stared at.
Lan Ze began to eat, curious to see what the “Lord” was planning.
“This is delicious, Lord. Your skill is remarkable.”
Yan Mo felt the tension leave his shoulders as Lan Ze stopped staring and focused on the food. “I’m glad you like it. Eat as much as you want.”
Yan Mo took a bite of the pork. The quality was excellent—tender, flavorful, and not too greasy. He squinted his eyes in satisfaction.
Lan Ze watched him, finding the sight unusual. Most Males were insatiable, demanding wealth, power, and the thrill of dominating Females through abuse. Yet Yan Mo seemed content with just a good meal.
Lan Ze found himself eating quite a lot. Despite his elegant, noble posture, his chopsticks were moving fast.
Yan Mo finished and sighed happily. This was real food. Nutrient solutions were truly a dark invention.
Lan Ze put down his chopsticks reluctantly, realizing he had eaten most of the dish. A faint blush touched his cheeks.
“Lord… soldiers consume a lot of energy during training. I have been impolite.”
“It’s fine,” Yan Mo said. “Are you full? I can make something else if you’re still hungry.”
Since he was staying here for free, cooking was the least he could do.
“No need! I am full.”
Yan Mo sent Xiao Yuan to clear the table and invited Lan Ze to the living room for tea.
“Major General, I know becoming my guardian wasn’t your choice.”
Lan Ze sat up straight, his beautiful yet cold eyes focused on Yan Mo. “What do you mean, Lord?”
“I want to stay here for a while,” Yan Mo said, meeting his gaze. “Since the guardianship is already in place, we can’t dissolve it immediately. But I promise you: once I undergo secondary differentiation, I will dissolve the bond and return your freedom.”
This was the best plan Yan Mo could come up with. He believed he was human, but the Zerg doctors insisted he was a Male. He would find out for sure once he “differentiated.” If he did, he could live here legally. If not, this arrangement would at least buy him time to find a way back home.
